@lrx54, yep and obviously there were some homes/buildings completely leveled, this could've been so much worse. Even as the storm hit with 120mph sustained winds, the surge was less than expected and I can only imagine that everything would've been leveled/submerged if the storm came in at 180mph sustained winds which is what it's strength was a few days before it got there. Floridians really needed a break as do those in states above, thankfully the storm didn't come in stronger and turn north into GA, SC, NC etc.
Nothing shocking here. This is what hurricanes have done for the past hundreds of years. If you choose to live there, you know the risks. People wonder why most of the insurance companies have left Florida. Hopefully, people were smart enough to evacuate before the storm.
Whomever captured these images, God Bless You! My parents have a family generational home on Manasota Key. Unfortunately, other drone coverage has not shown their home. Thanks to your wonderful coverage i can now see that there house is still standing and fortunately still has the roof, a huge surprise! I can only see the back of the house and the roof and the backyard is disaster! I am certain they have water damage, sand and possibly lost the carport as well as the screened in front porch! I'll take that! Again, thank you for taking the drone footage, allowing Manasota Key home owners know what they will be walking into when allowed back on the key! You need enough flexibility to yield without snapping. It may also depend on completely random contingencies like orientation and how the houses are grouped. There are probably papers and books on building survivably out there.
Thanks for your work. It was your video of Grand Isle, Louisiana after hurricane Ida in 2021 how I learned that our family's camp had been completely washed away by the Ida's storm surge. 💜💚💛
There is absolutely nothing you need to apologize for. I would have gotten the news eventually, but without your good work, it may have been weeks or months of being in the dark before we would have had the opportunity to see the destruction of our camp
Those pictures show one important thing very clearly: In Florida it pays off to invest in solid house construction! With the technology we have available today, buildings can withstand a hurricane’s force!
@@liann3881iIfyou built over a concrete garage with lots of holes in the wall to allow air and water to pass through, it would take a 15 ft surge to get to your living space. They used to build all the condos like that back in the 60’s.
The yacht tucked btwn the tree and house was the money shot. Great footage, build back better and stronger. Experienced super storm sandy in NJ. Best of luck
My pleasure. Normally we would do the whole island so everyone could see their homes but we were extremely limited law enforcement and flight restrictions. Hope it at least helped some.
Thanks for the video, I shared it on my weather page as well. I used to live in this area as a kid. My family now lives more inland than where we used to live. I used to work at Stump Pass Marina when it was Red Fish lodge and redone to Stump Pass.
You do not understand some of the homes been there for years probably a family vacation home now they got to sell their lots because it will cost to much to build to the new codes
Thanks for this footage. My heart goes out to all who suffered losses ❤ We had hella winds in Volusia County, lots of rain and some houses flooded but nothing like Ian in 2022.
In regions like this, it's essential to build with concrete or masonry. These materials provide greater resistance to strong winds and flying debris compared to lighter options like drywall. Concrete structures, in particular, can better withstand the forces of hurricanes, offering increased safety and durability in the face of extreme weather.
Even though there’s much at loss here these people can at least say they still have their homes in place where they were built. While the NC mountain locals homes completely floated away. I can only hope that everyone who lost anything at all can find some peace

In the end we ain’t alive to race to become the richest man or women but a race to see how many people we can touch in a positive way and leave a legacy, memory and a good feeling onto other people you come across in your life.
Wow, structures not built to handle a hurricane storm surge built 5 yards from the shoreline got destroyed in a hurricane storm surge. I'm shocked for one. Let us hope when rebuilding occurs, people build to match or exceed required hurricane building codes.
That's the problem one real estate person was explaining. You are only allowed to spend so much of your properties value on repairs before having to bring it up to full code. Ie... your house is worth $200,000. You may be able to spend $50,000 on repairs without updating to any new codes. Go beyond that $50,000 and you could now end up spending $150,000 in repairs to bring the house up to current code. So most people just try and repair what is needed as cheap as possible to not be forced in to paying 3x the cost.
I noticed that the houses on stilts seemed to fare much better than the ones built on the ground. It looks like most of those houses were built on a slab which is the worst possible way to build a house.
@@chris_jorge Not that easy. If it's storm surge damage then homeowner's insurance doesn't cover it. Flood insurance only pays $250K and if damage is more that 50% of assessed value the home needs to be brought up to current flood zone elevation, so those single story homes on the beach will need to be raised so that the first floor is 8+ feet above sea level before they can be re-built or repaired.
Just looking at this video, I think just to rebuild, they have to move all this waste somewhere. Cars/boats/homes and then comes the toxic clean up like mold and hazardous materials that leaked or spilled from homes and businesses and where to dump all that material. After years of past hurricanes and all the trash that have accumulated year after year on top of your everyday trash. Just so much garbage and hazardous waste. It just insane. This video shows how much is gone.
There is gonna come a time where it's not worth it to rebuild if we keep getting 1 hurricane after another. What is to say another one wont come in a few weeks? It's beyond frightening to think about.
I was up until 6am due to wind and banging. Our roof is damaged and my front garden is gone. I knew the west coast got hit so hard. Sending hugs and prayers to all affected. ❤

About 6 months ago we had a tornado in Texas and our roof was barely damaged, the insurance says that we have to replace it and it’ll cost at least 20K. We’ll only pay the deductible of course but to have such a small damage be so much money I can only imagine what all of this will cost to the homeowners. Praying for them!
There can be serious damage to a roof that is not visible. I doubt the insurance company would replace a roof if it was not necessary. I get what you mean about the cost of repairs and rebuilding will be. Florida was already having major issues around insurance. What a mess.
The thing in, in Florida there were about 18 tornadoes that touched down, and multiple power lines and houses were destroyed before the hurricane even made landfall because of those tornadoes.
Grove city turned out to be Grave city! Love and prayers from Canada. Best video coverage compared to all other news medias blabbering, thank you. ❤❤❤❤❤❤
What makes me really sad is thinking about all the junk that gets pulled out of those houses and into the sea. We have to stop building so close to these shores
It’s wrong they build those houses so close, look at the ones with gardens right to the waters edge. You can’t tell me people don’t put chemical fertilisers on those lawns and it doesn’t leech into the water.
Storm surge...look at how many trees are unscathed (still standing with tons of foliage). Water ALWAYS does more damage than wind! Shingles intact...but bottom floors completely gone.

A lot of these homes are still standing! Incredible! They must be built really well.

Hopefully getting the info helped. Sorry I had to deliver the news.

Maybe, but the water still gets in.
@@liann3881iIfyou built over a concrete garage with lots of holes in the wall to allow air and water to pass through, it would take a 15 ft surge to get to your living space. They used to build all the condos like that back in the 60’s.
@@liann3881 That's why you build elevated homes in low level areas.
New construction in the last couple decades is built to those standards.

Thank you for this post...much more than what everyone can expect compared to 1000s of news people focusing on a down tree.
Well said
Well they have to focus on a single downed tree as the Hurricane wasn't much of a Hurricane by Hurricane standards.
Thankfully many people were wise to evacuate! Such devastation!💔🙏
Utterly surprised at the number of structures still standing. Severe damage, but still erect.
Water damage, storm surge ... the winds were only maxing out at 100 mph GUSTS ... i.e. CAT 1 strength

Thanks for the video, I shared it on my weather page as well. I used to live in this area as a kid. My family now lives more inland than where we used to live. I used to work at Stump Pass Marina when it was Red Fish lodge and redone to Stump Pass.
Building a zero elevated home on the beach is just rolling the dice for destruction. Houses have replaced sand dunes.
It’s not even rolling the dice, it rather predictable.
And then you and I are forced to pay for this stupidity via subsidized insurance, fema, etc.
Zero empathy for these people.
@@rustyshackle917people have lived along the coastline for ions
You do not understand some of the homes been there for years probably a family vacation home now they got to sell their lots because it will cost to much to build to the new codes
@WSmith What explains the people who lived literally in the mountains in NC? NOT directly on the coast. They were just as devastated by Helene.
Thanks for this footage. My heart goes out to all who suffered losses ❤
We had hella winds in Volusia County, lots of rain and some houses flooded but nothing like Ian in 2022.
Thanks for sharing WXchasing! You are the best.

I moved out 4 months ago because of how high the water was getting and hurricanes.. This is very sad to see how trashed the neighborhood looks right now this neighborhood had crazy amount of surge during Helene. I will never live by the water like this again.. my old neighbor next to our old house is now selling as he wants to find a better place for retirement.
Excellent coverage, thank you for giving an aerial view.
OMG...SERIOUSLY devastating 😮
This is the first I’ve seen of grove city but i heard earlier it’s 90% annihilated
The fridge wedged horizontally between a fence and a telephone pole. Wow.
The house with the yacht right behind it I would keep it that way. Build around it and keep it as my guest house.
Plus it will protect you in the next storm. Great idea though.
A single story house on a barrier island is just wild to me.
Makes you wonder why they are called barrier islands!
First floor can wash out from under a 2 story. In storm surge. This looks like wind damage
and they'll have the insurance rebuild it and it'll be destroyed again. rinse and repeat.
What's the use of rebuilding. It's going to happen again someday again. The weather is out of control.
Ah they’ll just dump it back into the ocean!

There is gonna come a time where it's not worth it to rebuild if we keep getting 1 hurricane after another. What is to say another one wont come in a few weeks? It's beyond frightening to think about.

Why would you build flimsy houses on a beach without a proper sea wall? What were they thinking?

Not much. Majority are MAGA.

While my heart goes out to people, you don't build on barrier reefs and sandbars. This is why
Agree. They destroyed nature. And barrier means something. It could've have vegetation native trees pines wildlife.
True, but look at what happened in the MOUNTAINS of NC a few days ago. And here in the west, fires.

so terrible, so sad to see the damage😭

And yet at the same time it doesn't help one bit.
5:17 The boat sticking to the house , is a smart move protecting the house.
No one absolutely no one should be allowed to build within a mile of beachfront pristine beachfront is being decimated by the filthy rich
We?
So sorry 😢. Prayers from Iowa.
Storm surge...look at how many trees are unscathed (still standing with tons of foliage). Water ALWAYS does more damage than wind! Shingles intact...but bottom floors completely gone.
Trees can bend without breaking most of the time. Walls don't bend. They snap or collapse.
Too bad we can’t build homes out of palm trees
What was lost will be rebuilt stronger and better prepared for the next one.
It could've been so much worse.
