@JonathanPetramala there is a construction company out of North Carolina that claims to be able to build homes that are virtually "hurricane proof." I believe they are called Deltec or Deltec Homes. I am very interested in seeing what happened to any of their construction that was in the path of either of these two hurricanes. It might be something that you could do a video about.
I went thru a big major complicated loss and upheaval in 2019, followed by that year of essentially involuntary self-confinement via COVID in 2020. There are still days when I’m not quite sure who I am after all of that. And that still doesn’t even come close to going thru a hurricane, much less two of them back-to-back.
Seeing all this makes me really want to do van life - build it out & travel - this breaks my heart seeing all these people who worked so hard to build a home, life, community - I've been through flooding of my places but nothing to this extent. Sending prayers that they will all find the strength to carry on & enjoy their lives - I am so sorry this happened to you all!

Two hurricanes in two weeks is absurd. Feels like a movie/zombie apocalypse type scene with the streets littered of everything you'd find in homes. Even houses pushed off their foundations. Loved the one man's Jimmy Buffet shirt! I don't watch mainstream news at all and solely rely on people like you on RUclips to provide this detailed, raw coverage of nationwide disasters. No hurricane storm surge in 25 years. Now 2 in 2 weeks. I'm north of the bay and tons of old mammoth trees came down. Withlacoochee river "might rise for the next 4 weeks" Since when?
I like your videos because you show more of what actually happened with normal people. You're right that the news focused more on the roof of the baseball stadium, a crane falling over downtown. The news also rarely shows areas outside of the bigger cities. Smaller towns and communities are rarely ever shown on the news. The news does do a good job at providing weather information etc but they don't do much for coverage on areas away from the city and away from the water.
Yes! I loved this video! The news tried to make it a spectacle as if it is smth huge to celebrate... At least some news station's coverage felt like that. While I liked seeing news about it, as nobody was outside beside them and a few storm chasers, now it gets ridiculous... Now that you can actually go most places and talk to people, they don't... They still only show streets underwater, some trees being thrown over, the stadium and even say it wasn't that bad... I sometimes want them to loose their houses and whole neighbourhood, lifetime of memories and all and see if they still call it not bad...

Thank you. I visited your beautiful country this past summer/your winter. I loved it and the people. I live in Indiana but my brother lives in N. Fort Myers. Ian a few years ago was terrible. I haven't heard from him about the home, but I know he's ok, I insisted he went to the VA Hospital where he works so I didn't have to worry. LOL. Many blessings to you too!
I lived in NY my whole life. Last year I moved to FL due to personal circumstances. I've come to the conclusion that this is not a place to live, it's a place to vist or vacation. The nice weather, tempatures, and views really aren't worth the trouble of the possibility of losing everything you own and worked for. The day I can go back to NY or anywhere around there will be a happy day for me.
We are northerners who came down and bought a beautiful home on the water in SW florida. We are not wiped out from any storm, but I suspect we will be virtually wiped out from very high insurance costs and the bottom falling out from the real estate market. Can’t afford the insurance and can’t afford to move.

I lived there too and I loved it! I hadn't expected that at all. I moved there from Amsterdam. My baseline of happiness was so much higher there. The people were generally very friendly and easygoing and I was much fitter there too. I loved the smells in the air in fall. It's a good thing we all have our preferences otherwise... (I can picture cartoons now with extremely high skyscrapers or people stacked)😊

I don’t understand why people build houses at ground level knowing that storm surges are always a risk with these storms- so damn sad. Building codes need to reflect the reality of living in an area like this.
100% agree. Within the first few minutes when he is talking about a neighbours trailer and we are looking out to sea. My thoughts were ‘who builds something so fragile on a virtually flat piece of land right on the sea in a hurricane zone and NOT expect one day for it to be hit big time.
These areas should only have solid apartment buildings for people with the lower part adampted for flooding, trailer parcs like that get destroyed and flooded every year, no use to rebuild all the time

Two weeks ago, Tampa experienced its highest storm surge since 1921. Tampa wasn’t spared at all.
I live in Tampa and after this storm I'm so thankful that we (and even more so, my family) got exceptionally lucky. Tampa always gets out of it, but this time it was too close for comfort, and even then most of us lost power or have significant damage. Scariest night of our lives by far
No one is building wooden houses in Mediterranean and we have severe winds and storms at least 30 days per year. You should either have wooden "sunny days shelters" or proper homes build from bricks and concretes.
guy you do not have a clue. there's nothing that can be done when waves crash onto a singles story building and there are 10-15 feet of storm surge. 3-5 meters. your brick house would be underwater. what you're looking at here are trailers, aka modular homes build elsewhere and dropped on the site with a truck, sometimes even a barge in a community like this one. these are working class people. this is an area that the news crews can actually get to. the worst areas will not be accessible via roadways for weeks until the bridges are repaired. you'll have to travel by boat. milton was the biggest storm the world will see this year. it came about a week after helene. comparing your geography and your climate to this place is totally laughable. a florida hurricane would put the fear of god into your soul. the only thing you can do is run. if you're dumb enough to think you are safe in a brick building in 5 meters of water, be my guest and stay. write your name on your arm legibly in permanent marker so we can identify your body. ignorance is astounding.

We went through Andrew in 92. We were just like these people. Shell shocked. Not sure where to start. Things start to mold. We had to demolish and raise the foundation of the new house. Took 3 years. We finally sold the completed house and moved back to TX. I know exactly how these people feel. It’s so sad. 🙏🏻

So sad sing this my anxiety goes way up I live up north now I lived through Hurricane Katrina and many other hurricanes before that Katrina was the worst lost my home my livelihood my job move back home to New York in the past 16 years have not been easy having to stop from the beginning again I was 47 years old when I lost everything I'm 60 now and just rebuilding it's sad if you have no money in the bank you're in trouble and to think that FEMA is going to help you that much help me very little I had no flood insurance during Katrina I pray for all these people that they can you know Florida people are tough they'll be okay somehow I hope the government helps them like they should😢
I had 4 feet of water in my home from Helene. I am blessed that Milton didn't do much more damage--and the company hired to remove the debris from our neighborhood did a fantastic job in removing all the storm debris before Milton hit. Our neighbors that were not affected, drove up and down the streets bringing meals almost daily. At the next door neighborhood civic building--people brought in trucks of ice, and set up SBA and FEMA stations. The Walmart parking lot had Hope set up giving out gatorade bottles, water, and necessary hygiene toiletries. I live in the best community area you could hope for in Hudson, FL.
Thank you. From the national coverage I thought Milton was nothing like Helene. For these people it was much worse. It should give pause to people thinking of moving to Florida to retire. They might find themselves working harder than ever, which is something I know about from living through a wildfire. Ten years later, still replanting trees.

The poor man @4:26 rly explained it all. Nobody even knows how to start to get back on their feet. They’re exhausted, overwhelmed and it’s almost the worst 2 disaster’s I remember seeing. Pll are trying to keep their spirits up, but the economy isn’t helping. PTSD is one factor but suicide rates cld significantly increase. 😢
I think some mean it wasn’t as bad as what could have happened. If the storm hits further north for instance and doesn’t weaken as much. That sort of thing.
Now just imagine what American bombs, weapons and money sent to the colonial occupiers are doing to innocent kid's, women children and elderly in Palestine every day and what they have to deal with every day 😢
I feel so bad for everyone affected by Helene and Milton. Florida is such a lovely place and they just can’t seem to catch a break recently. Plus there are houses built before they stiffened the construction regulations after that hurricane (that I can never remember the name of) that hit in the 1990s. So there’s still older houses that don’t meet those standards. You could really see the difference in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.
@@Plutogalaxy Even regular houses in the US are made of wood, when I hear Americans talk about punching holes through walls, that really confused me, until I learned how their houses are made.
big reason imo is that FEMA code concrete houses take months to build vs wooden houses that take only a few weeks. Also a lot of the houses in the video precede resilience building codes
It a repeat of storms I couldn’t do that I love the ocean but to only visit and then leave. I love where I live and everyone has their choice. It’s lovely in Florida now so much damage it must be devastating to some that have to rebuild. Sorry for the loss of life my condolences to the families and loss of pets. If these people decide to stay they need to rebuild their houses on stilts, how the council allowed that land to be zoned for any other structure is just criminal.

It's all a lightweight construction. No steel or concrete. Simple fodder for storms. It's amazing that something like this gets approved by your building authorities.
I agree. We live in re-enforced concrete houses and it survived a cat 5 right over top. The next neighborhood over was manufactured housing and they were destroyed.
One more reason not to put money in a REIT. They’ve bought up a lot of trailer parks in Florida and pushed low income people out and jacked up lot rent to insane levels to get a return on their investment. But the joke is on them, these parks are going to be less and less desirable to the snowbirds they are trying to gouge.

100% agree. Within the first few minutes when he is talking about a neighbours trailer and we are looking out to sea. My thoughts were ‘who builds something so fragile on a virtually flat piece of land right on the sea in a hurricane zone and NOT expect one day for it to be hit big time.

These areas should only have solid apartment buildings for people with the lower part adampted for flooding, trailer parcs like that get destroyed and flooded every year, no use to rebuild all the time

Tampa sat in the northern eye wall for at least five hours, getting pounded by hurricane force winds and a foot of rain. 71% of Hillsborough county is out of power, there is flooding all over the city, trees are down in every neighborhood, many buildings have wind damage. Two weeks ago, Tampa experienced its highest storm surge since 1921. Tampa wasn’t spared at all.

I live in Tampa and after this storm I'm so thankful that we (and even more so, my family) got exceptionally lucky. Tampa always gets out of it, but this time it was too close for comfort, and even then most of us lost power or have significant damage. Scariest night of our lives by far

No one is building wooden houses in Mediterranean and we have severe winds and storms at least 30 days per year.
You should either have wooden "sunny days shelters" or proper homes build from bricks and concretes.
Florida is too poor to build with brick and concrete, most are retirees living on a fixed income
guy you do not have a clue. there's nothing that can be done when waves crash onto a singles story building and there are 10-15 feet of storm surge. 3-5 meters. your brick house would be underwater. what you're looking at here are trailers, aka modular homes build elsewhere and dropped on the site with a truck, sometimes even a barge in a community like this one. these are working class people. this is an area that the news crews can actually get to. the worst areas will not be accessible via roadways for weeks until the bridges are repaired. you'll have to travel by boat. milton was the biggest storm the world will see this year. it came about a week after helene. comparing your geography and your climate to this place is totally laughable. a florida hurricane would put the fear of god into your soul. the only thing you can do is run. if you're dumb enough to think you are safe in a brick building in 5 meters of water, be my guest and stay. write your name on your arm legibly in permanent marker so we can identify your body. ignorance is astounding.

We went through Andrew in 92. We were just like these people. Shell shocked. Not sure where to start. Things start to mold. We had to demolish and raise the foundation of the new house. Took 3 years. We finally sold the completed house and moved back to TX. I know exactly how these people feel. It’s so sad. 🙏🏻

So sad sing this my anxiety goes way up I live up north now I lived through Hurricane Katrina and many other hurricanes before that Katrina was the worst lost my home my livelihood my job move back home to New York in the past 16 years have not been easy having to stop from the beginning again I was 47 years old when I lost everything I'm 60 now and just rebuilding it's sad if you have no money in the bank you're in trouble and to think that FEMA is going to help you that much help me very little I had no flood insurance during Katrina I pray for all these people that they can you know Florida people are tough they'll be okay somehow I hope the government helps them like they should😢
I had 4 feet of water in my home from Helene. I am blessed that Milton didn't do much more damage--and the company hired to remove the debris from our neighborhood did a fantastic job in removing all the storm debris before Milton hit. Our neighbors that were not affected, drove up and down the streets bringing meals almost daily. At the next door neighborhood civic building--people brought in trucks of ice, and set up SBA and FEMA stations. The Walmart parking lot had Hope set up giving out gatorade bottles, water, and necessary hygiene toiletries. I live in the best community area you could hope for in Hudson, FL.

Thank you. From the national coverage I thought Milton was nothing like Helene. For these people it was much worse. It should give pause to people thinking of moving to Florida to retire. They might find themselves working harder than ever, which is something I know about from living through a wildfire. Ten years later, still replanting trees.

The poor man @4:26 rly explained it all. Nobody even knows how to start to get back on their feet. They’re exhausted, overwhelmed and it’s almost the worst 2 disaster’s I remember seeing. Pll are trying to keep their spirits up, but the economy isn’t helping. PTSD is one factor but suicide rates cld significantly increase. 😢

I think some mean it wasn’t as bad as what could have happened. If the storm hits further north for instance and doesn’t weaken as much. That sort of thing.

Unfortunately with the gas situation it is difficult to make it to more places, I am working on doing more but I have to keep it close to home for a few more days at least
As sad as this is, it's not getting better. It will only continue to get worse. This is why insurance in Florida is at best expensive and at worst non-existent.

in germany we don`t have it either. we had some high water a few years ago and last year. from government no help but fancy photos in the end the neighbours and citizen stuck together. in this video people with houses at the beach in florida are rich and i think there will be a fast rebuild.

Why does nobody build their homes with concrete instead of wood, specially in a coastal area known for hurricans?
I think cost has a big part of this
Plus there are houses built before they stiffened the construction regulations after that hurricane (that I can never remember the name of) that hit in the 1990s. So there’s still older houses that don’t meet those standards. You could really see the difference in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael.

@@Plutogalaxy Even regular houses in the US are made of wood, when I hear Americans talk about punching holes through walls, that really confused me, until I learned how their houses are made.
big reason imo is that FEMA code concrete houses take months to build vs wooden houses that take only a few weeks. Also a lot of the houses in the video precede resilience building codes
It a repeat of storms I couldn’t do that I love the ocean but to only visit and then leave. I love where I live and everyone has their choice. It’s lovely in Florida now so much damage it must be devastating to some that have to rebuild. Sorry for the loss of life my condolences to the families and loss of pets. If these people decide to stay they need to rebuild their houses on stilts, how the council allowed that land to be zoned for any other structure is just criminal.
For 100 years, most of these areas didn't need stilts. Weather manipulation patents started in 1947 and escalated this and other hurricanes.
Been there for decades great grandparents owned those fishing towns.

It's all a lightweight construction. No steel or concrete. Simple fodder for storms. It's amazing that something like this gets approved by your building authorities.
I agree. We live in re-enforced concrete houses and it survived a cat 5 right over top. The next neighborhood over was manufactured housing and they were destroyed.
One more reason not to put money in a REIT. They’ve bought up a lot of trailer parks in Florida and pushed low income people out and jacked up lot rent to insane levels to get a return on their investment. But the joke is on them, these parks are going to be less and less desirable to the snowbirds they are trying to gouge.
