I love the color and look of Lava in general. I personally wouldn't want the smart version but I would like to grab one up someday.

Cool concept, iPhone + Guitar = a fun toy to jam with.

Please don’t take my criticisms the wrong way.
The problem is these import “carbon fiber” guitars aren’t the same thing as bidirectional carbon fiber. These import guitars are made of ground up CF mixed into resin. Have a look at what happened to the Lava 3 Agufish once unboxed that arrived with a shattered top. That’ll never happen with a guitar like a KLOS made of bidirectional where breaking won’t happen in shipping or any other use case (that’s why bidirectional CF material is used in the aerospace industry). These import guitars sadly are very easy to break (sometimes easier than wood), and over a long period, people have reported that it starts to resist humidity less and less because the resin warps. They’re essential mostly plastic and there’s no way to repair or adjust them if anything happens.
If you’re looking for durability and longevity, get a KLOS, which isn’t that much more money and will exist for your lifetime and beyond. I own one of their first full sized hybrid guitars that has a CF reinforced wood neck (before they made CF necks) that was given to me as a gift by my mom before she passed away in 2018. It’s still going strong. They’re made even better these days to withstand nearly every use case. If you want a guitar that you’ll never have an issue with breaking or whatever, look at a KLOS. They are all Plekked and their customer service is incredible with a shop based in Utah and you can make tons of customizations to your guitar. Lifetime warranty against defects. They encourage calling to ask for discounts, checking their discounted b-stock, and buying from their Kickstarters (which are always successful and have the cheapest prices for new model launches).
I don’t recommend these import “carbon fiber” guitars - there are some people who are happy with them, but I’ve heard far too many stories of broken guitars without any recourse because people think these guitars are built like tanks when they are essentially plastic resin with some ground CF mixed inside. I’m not throwing shade, but I hate to see people spend hundreds or even more than a grand only to have their guitar land in a garbage several years later (if that). It’s important to understand what these composite guitars are made of, but it seems many RUclipsrs have no idea that these guitars aren’t built to last.
There’s also no way to upgrade the hardware once it’s obsolete. In a few years, they’re going to push you to buy a whole new guitar with a new “phone” that has better features. I wish these smart guitars would at least have easy to upgrade hardware where the whole guitar doesn’t lose its smarts once they stop updating or the electronics inevitably break. That’s another thing to consider. I love tech, but until you can swap smart devices when upgrades are released with a simple quick connect (kind of like swapping a pickup), it’s poorly implemented in design.

Klos is a worthy choice for sure same for their ukukeles. As for guitars I bought a Blue Lava 36” of HPL body construction with a wood neck. Like HPL in my Martin ukulele so that was not a hard choice to make. The guitar construction is first rate, nonQC issues, no fret sprout, nice neck shape and a very resonant pleasant sound. Its body shape is not rounded so it sits well. It does not have the software options rather it is a simple mechanical knob system with the ability to also plug into an amp. Marco Cirillo’s review shows just how nice it is overall as an option if looking for a quality instrument at more modest prices.

I've got the previous version Me 2. That comes without the iPhone attached and has just 3 simple effects; reverb, delay and chorus. And you can't use delay and chorus together, it's either or. But it's the simplicity that makes it feel more like a guitar and less like a computer. Imo it sounds fuller and more multi-dimensional than the new one. But that could just be the RUclips compression not doing the guitar justice 🤷🏻‍♂️

This would be ace for beginners too. Really helpful learning tool with the embedded os. Just a shame about the price tbh. Feel as though this could be made far cheaper and would gain much more mainstrean traction this way, especially amongst beginners. I could never justify dropping a grand on one of these instead of a great Fender or Gibson. The problem is neither would a beginner who this instrument would be more than ideal for. I feel like this is going to end up in a bit of a market rut until the price drops significantly.

  • @geoffedwards189

It's a concept, and if the product is well made, as this one seems to be, you can't criticize a manufacturer for trying something new, even if it is not to your taste. I can't see that it would be detrimental to anyone's learning or playing skills unlike some of the other offerings we see from time to time. If it gets someone into music for the first time then wonderful! For me the only downside is the price for what is basically an entry level guitar.

I've had d18s, d28s, Yamaha LLTAs and everything in between. Just never seemed to stick with acoustics. Then I bought a LAVA ME 2 (the more basic version w/o touchscreen). I have played this thing more than any guitar I have. It's just so fun and I am a better acoustic player now because of it. Bought a second one in another color just to keep in drop-d tuning.

It really brought out the color in your eyes, Landon. How was the volume of the reverb or delay in the room? Did it keep up with the volume of the guitar?

Can you add backing tracks and assorted amplifiers or even different replications of tone to sound like a Martin, Fender, Yamaha or Guild six or 12 string? The possibilities are endless, and maybe add some AI to the mix where you can play side by side with your favorite artist or band……

You know, as I have gotten older I am realizing I don't have enough carbon fiber in my guitar diet. I love the innovation. My only complaint is, like the Ovation, it's tough to play because of the convex back. Good on Lava for innovating, though.
