Im pretty sure the pencil gets worn out anyways regardless of screen protector. I don’t use paperlike and that happened to me. I also don’t mind buying a pack of 4 tips for about less than 15 dollars. One tip every 2 years, that makes spending 15 dollars every 8 years, I’d say that’s pretty affordable Edit: I'm an artist and I use my pen for drawing on a daily basis so my pen probably gets worn down faster than the typical person Update: I’ve been using the same tip since I wrote this comment (2 years ago) and there’s still no visible damage at all even with paperlike :)

I’m an artist as well. I’ve had paperlike for a year with my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 inch. I love it. I’ve found that scratching and wearing down of the pencil happens when the screen has dust or dirt on it. It causes friction between the pencil and screen. I tend to wipe my pencil tip and screen before I begin drawing. It’s helped a lot.
Did it ruin your whole $100 Apple Pencil though? Sounds a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water. The nibs are a consumable part of the Apple Pencil (they even give you your first replacement free in the box). If they’re lasting folks 6 months, and a 4-pack runs $8, that’s $4/yr in tips 🤷🏼♀️.
They are but not that fast, they want you to spend more on nibs these days, or you don't know how old wacom tabs used to come without that annoying texture... Now they added to sell more nibs
@@dogkun20 In the regular cintiqs, they do have the scratchy texture but the main problem with that are screen scratches. The cintiq pros have a smoother texture that avoids it. New digital artists need to remember that nibs wearing out happen normally with regular use. Even before the Apple Pencil was a thing.
I’m glad to finally see a real review on these; personally I found that while I COULD deal with the tip being worn so much (even though it feels somehow damaging to the Apple Pencil itself to be subjected to all this friction), I could not deal with how much worse the quality/resolution of the screen became- the iPad had such a crisp bright screen before the matte protector that I could not handle more than a few days with it. Also I found that it somewhat decreased touch sensitivity.
I’m the same here. I had it on for about a year. It wore down my pencil, and the quality decrease was kinda terrible. My iPad felt very dated and old, I took it off the other day and it felt like I had a whole new device. The color accuracy was MUCH improved. I had to go back several times and re-color a couple pieces because of the color diffusion. I’m trying the silicon pencil tips now to see how it is.
I had the same experience. I tried paperlike and the screen just looked so much worse in my opinion. You can see each pixel being refracted into multiple colors dude to the roughness of the screen protector. :(
It doesn't have effect the apple pencils functions in any way, shape or form. The nib will always wear down and be destroyed after usage, whether that's in 3yrs, 1yr, 6mnths or 1mnth it'll ALWAYS wear down. That's how it is. The nib is the ONLY thing being effected by wear and tear. That's how it was supposed to be designed, and applying pressure, up til a certain point(obviously if you Hulk tf out then you're an idiot, and your iPad is guaranteed going to have damage. That's a you issue, not the nib, pen, or screen protector issue) point. There's a reason for it, it's designed specifically for such use. And why it has x amount of pressure sensitivity and why the activation force is tremendously low. To give you the best utmost experience while using it. Whether you're a student or an artist. Paperlike has a matte finish, 100% of the screen protectors that are going for the paper like feel, will have a matte finish. This reduces the color accuracy, by not too much, but for some enough to be a dealbreaker. It's one of the reasons Wacom has changed the way it does the screen on their high end products. But all Wacoms old products, like the 22hd and the new, cheaper(not by much) products have the matte finish issue. But you'd have to remember everyone has varying color profiles on their phones, computers and tablets. Even if the colors are perfect, someone won't see em as perfect as you. What you want out of the experience of art is up to you, but you can't condemn paperlike cause of the matte finish. This was always a problem with these things. Doesn't damage your pencil, it just adds increased wear and tear to the nibs, meaning your wallet will hurt more than the pencil. And will actually feel a hit to it than the pencil does.
I’m pretty sure it also depends how hard your way to draw is. I don’t put a lot of pressure on my own stylus, and I remember having clean intuos Wacom tablets and very sensitive pressure settings while my fellow students were literally digging holes into their own tablets. I don’t have paperlike but a simple jet tech screen protection to avoid scratches and it’s fine :)I think I won’t ever buy paperlike :)
Im an illustrator, had my apple pencil for 4-5 years and never had such an issue when using paperlike. My first assumption is that this guy has more of a heavy hand and is making more friction against the matte finish. I have a light hand even with a regular pencil but I still create marks on my paperlike screen. Kinda seems like it just comes with time. Though, It’s never been an issue to watch shows thru my marks, don’t even notice them. Maybe if you have a similar heavy-handed output then you should not get paperlike but honestly, not sure. I think a matte/glass screen protector is still valuable purchase even if its not paperlike. And if you use paperlike and they mess up your nibs, it will cost you a mere fraction of $100 to get replacement nibs. I understand some of the negatives he mentioned but I also don’t think I’ve ever wanted to use my iPad in such lighting environments. I don’t make drawing outside a norm because whether you have a matte screen protector or not, you’re going to have to max out the brightness to be able to draw in the first place. That just drains the battery faster and gives you less drawing/screen time. Any other glares mentioned don’t tend to happen because you can move anywhere with an iPad and is generally positioned at an angle (away from top lit lighting) If I were drawing with a light glaring directly above me for creating some social media content, then sure, I guess I would see this as an issue but it’s not realistic on the day to day for a majority of people.
That’s crazy. I had my matte screen protector for 2 years now and the marks on the screen protector doesn’t look as bad as the Paperlike screen protector shown in the video. And my Apple Pencil just started wearing down. Sheesh, Paperlike seems like a scam honestly. Edit: I forgot i made this comment. I made myself look like i hate matte screen protectors lmfao. The nib wearing down isn't a concern for me as long as i have control over my lines. I just think that the price of Paperlike isn't worth it and its best to go for cheaper alternatives. God i make dumb comments sometimes.

Get one in a double pack and don't spend over 20 bucks on it and you should be set for at least the next year. And since the texture on those tends to be a bit more subtle, it has like a velvety feel to it and the image quality doesn't suffer as much as with a paperlike. Not to mention you apple pencil tips won't be wearing down so much

I've been drawing on a glass screen protector for 2 years and I've recently been thinking if I should switch to a paperlike one since so many artists in my country recommended it. Some even said it's worth changing the pencil tips. But after watching your video, I don't feel the need to change anymore since I'm already used to drawing on glass protector and my apple pencil is still in good shape after 2 years of regular use.
RIGHTTTTTT, 15 dollars for 4 tips each lasting for 6 months. it's like 15 dollars of additional expenses on top of 1k dollars ipad. Such a waste!!!! It's more than 50 cents per month!! you can also invest using that money instead of wasting it on plastic nibs. Smart!

In a way i find it normal to "ruin" your stuff in art Painters destroy their paint tubes, traditional literally melt drawing pencils and have to change their copics every few weeks-months, Digital artists destroy their pen nibs, and now ipad digital artists ruin their pens on the other hand, the price of replacing the apple pen is absurd, and Apple soon will start rising the price since they will see that all of a sudden people keep ruining their pens We all know how apple works

Literally this. Stylus nibs are going to wear out eventually, just the same as you go through paints and pencils, and just as a toothy, heavy paper is going to absorb more paint or eat away at a pencil, adding more friction to the surface of the tablet is going to wear out the nib faster. That is completely normal and expected. That's the tradeoff you make for the control the friction provides on the tablet. He made a couple other points that I would have liked to see explored more, but he chose to focus on the stylus...
It will, it`s pretty simple physics. If there is friction between two objects one has to wear off. Pen nibs are designed to be soft and wear off because if they weren`t screen would have to wear off. Thats the whole point, making nibs to wear off and protect screen this way. Now it seems pretty obvious why paperlike screen protector makes it wear off faster, simply because there is more friction. And whole point of paperlike protector is to provide more friction. It`s just physics, it has to be that way because world works that way. It`s not even disadvantage, it`s just something u have to bear if u want more friction while drawing.
How freaking hard are you pressing down? I've had Paperlike on my iPad pro for almost two years and have been drawing on it daily for almost a year with nothing like this happening to my apple pencil...I also have none of those streaks or scratches on my Paperlike. 🤷🏻♀️
This is obviously an exaggeration manufacturer for content. I don't use paper-like but my tip gets worn down pretty quickly from constantly taking notes, but you will feel the metal scraping as soon it is exposed and will rotate the the pen to wear it down evenly and all around before discarding the tip. And even then it doesn't look as close to what he is claiming. Fake.
Pressing down really hard when drawing is reeeeally bad for your hand, it’ll nearly always lead to tendonitis and eventually, nerve damage. The latter has killed many art careers. I hope the thumbnail was an intentional exaggeration and he just cut the nib and that isn’t actually the result of 6months of drawing, because otherwise he’d be wise to see an occupational therapist to review his drawing techniques and change to something less destructive for his hands health and longevity.
i’ve had my ipad for a good 6 months maybe and ive had the same tip on my apple pencil since i first got it. I have a paper-like screen protector and my pencil is doing just fine. I’m heavy hand when drawing/writing btw.
The wearing of the Apple Pencil isn’t even the biggest issue for me. It’s the loss of screen quality. I’m sorry but with how far we’ve come with the iPads and all it has now - Liquid Retina Display, 120hz refresh rate, 1600 nits max brightness, mini-LED Display, True Tone - it’s not worth losing even some of that by dulling the screen down with a matte protector. Maybe it’s because I’m not an artist and I’d get the iPad Pro solely for work and pleasure that I wouldn’t get a matte screen protector, but I want my viewing experience to be superb and the matte screen will just take away from that in my opinion.
Yes this. I have used both a first generation iPad Pro as well as (my new and current device after I passed the other one to my grandma) and I have tried three matte ones, and no matter the price all of them did ruin the quality. As I do use my iPad a lot of reading papers too, It’s a catastrophe. I am fine with the slick feeling, if it was just the texture, I wouldn’t give a duck about the tip. But the image and sharpness and contrast being so off is terrible! (I am also an artist, so… yeah no, not worth it, maybe a silicon or washi tape wrapped tip can help if the slip is such a huge issue)
As an artist I’m still driven away from it because it just murders screen quality. I’d love to have the feel of paper like, but I wouldn’t trade off the screen for it honestly.

I have an amazon 'dupe' to the Paperlike on my iPad and it honestly outperforms the actual 'name brand' Paperlike lol it blows it out of the water. Paperlike's installation is so painful so I said never again. The dupe is just amazing and I am a STEM student who takes a crap load of notes EVERYDAY. So far, after 2 years of use I haven't seen significant wear on my pencil tip!
I use paperlike and I really like it. I love the feeling of the texture while drawing. I feel like all the issues posed in this video are very exaggerated, especially the wearing of the pencil tip. When I used to use wacom tablets before getting my ipad, the nibs were actually wearing down much faster and I had to keep buying new ones every 6 months or so because they got a scratchy sharp edge from the friction. I've been using the same paperlike protector and the same pencil tip for 8 months now and while I can see the tip definitely looks used, it's still perfectly fine. Yeah, there are scratch marks on the protector but I can't even see them when the screen is on. And it makes me feel better that the scratch marks are on the protector rather than on the tablet itself. I mean that's what a protector is for. I have a protector on my galaxy s20+ and even though I don't draw on that, it's full of scratches because that's its purpose, to protect the screen from getting scratched. Everything else mentioned has never been an issue for me either. Sorry but this whole video just screams click bait
It probably depends a lot on how much pressure you use when you write. I imagine someone who writes really hard will wear down the tips and scuff the protector up much faster than someone who is light and gentle with the pencil. That could explain why some people blow through tips like crazy with Paperlike while others have no issues.
Any screen protector would scratch anyway, nothing lasts forever. I agree with you for sure, the tips are very exaggerated and i feel like that could be bad advice for people who were considering buying a paper feel screen protector.
lol yeah when I used Wacom in the past, the pen stand it came with actually had built in storage for the spare tips because it was considered normal to replace them.
I've used paperlike over the last 3-4 years and i think they work good. Peronally i've never had an issue with the nibs wearing down quickly. I bought a 4 pack of nibs for about 90 kr (about 8-9 US dollars) because i was noticed some wear om the nib. But imo, switching out the nibs about once a year aint that bad, especially when you only need to pay 8-9 dollars every four years :) But something i do have an issue with regarding paperlike is that the surface gets smooths out and looses its texture too fast. This has mostly been a problem with the newest model of paperlike though. So thats a negative for me. But all in all its a good but somewhat pricey product. Regarding using the iPad without any screenprotector at all i whould'nt recomend it because if you happen to scratch or damage the screen in some other way it whould be way more expensive to replace the screen then it whould be to replace a screenprotector. All in all, there's many Good screenprotectors that gives a paper feeling. You don't have to buy specifically paperlike but i whould recommend a screenprotector to anyone who uses an iPad, for art or otherwise :) Anyhow, sorry for my crappy spelling, English is not my native language. I'm also writing this on my phone while on the bus on my way home so autocorrect is messing with every word i type. :-P
You didn't notice it then, the texture will always worns out the nip, it's just logic, its what textures do that's why all old tablets didn't have that texture and not that baby texture on the new ones, it's just to make you buy new nibs
We also have to keep in mind how heavy handed we are with our Apple Pencil. Ive had to remind myself tht I don’t have to use as much pressure to make a mark on my iPad. Especially if you just up the sensitivity, you can put the bare minimum amount of pressure on your ipad, prolonging the pencil tips life as well as any screen protectors you may use (matte or not) and the ipad screen itself. We can also use pencil tips and avoid using matte screen protectors all together.
Though I haven't used iPads much for drawing, I do have plenty of experience with drawing tablets (with and without screens) and it's a given that you'll have to replace both the nibs on your pen and your screen protector on a regular basis. Almost every graphics tablet worth buying comes with about six to eight extra nibs for this reason. With or without a textured screen protector, you have to replace nibs, this is part of digital art. You have to buy new utensils all the time for traditional art. And whether you consider it worth the extra price to get that paper feel is up to you. I personally have always preferred smooth glass, but if I liked the textured feel better, I'd pay for it. And for the dull color thing, textured screen protectors are brought up in many tablet reviews when talking about colors. This is part of why so many people prefer to get tablets with higher color gamuts than you'd find on the screens that people will be using to look at your art on. TL;DR This is all up to preference. It's not stupid to go with a paperlike or similar screen protector. Use what you prefer. And please use a screen protector, even if it's not textured, so you don't scratch your screen. The nibs will wear down no matter what, and become sharp.
I think it depends on how hard you press down as well. I’ve have mine going on 4 years and while I don’t do art and take notes every single day I used my pen pretty often and I haven’t had to change out my tip yet, and I haven’t changed my screen protector in a couple of years either. So I guess it just depends on maintenance and use.
to the people saying “well sometimes you’re not rich enough to get tips” first off, yes in this economy its hard to buy tips, BUT he did mention six months to a year his apple pencil tip needs to be replaced so, a pack of four for 17 dollars is around buying 1 per 2 years. another thing added to this list. even if you have a gloss protector IT WILL BE DAMAGED!! if you research a little bit, it will be matte and is for a nicer feel not a nicer look, it is supposed to feel like a drawing tablet as well. And him vouching for basically the same product but different company seems pretty weird doesnt it? this is just my view/opinion on this but if i am wrong please dont come and attack me for it. ❤
Umm...everyone realizes that you need to replace the nib or the tip every once in a while. The natural friction from the screen without any protection will wear down a nib. Replacements are $20 USD on the Apple website. We know this right?

I bought the Paperlike even though many ppl said that it´s bad for your pencil tip, turns out it actually is. I had to buy a pack of replacement tips just so I could use my Apple Pencil again, so I can´t recommend buying it either.
With or without the screen protector you’d still have to replace the nib over time. Every single drawing tablet will wear down the nibs. The screen protector is not the problem, or anything at that, it just happens as you use it.
Have yall thought about not pressing too hard? Like i have a drawing tablet with paper like protection but it doesn't have wearing out neither show signs of it, if its wearing out fast them its because youre pressuring on it too hard
This happened to me too. I normally am a really hard writer, I use to break my lead pencils all the time. It translated over to my writing on my iPad with the paper like screen protector. Completely ruined my pen tip :( I switched to a glass screen protector this semester so let’s hope it won’t happen again. Edit: After over a year of using a glass protector, my pen tip is still in good shape! It’s barely showing any wear and tear so I’ll probably estimate a year or two before needing to change it.
I bought a metal ballpoint pen-feel tip for my apple pencil when I bought my paperlike screen protector and so far have had no issues. I draw with a bit more friction than your normal person so my screen protector has a few scratches from that. but I highly recommend getting a different tip for your pencil if you have a paperlike screen protector even if you don’t write/draw hard. it’s a lifesaver :)
I have used the paperlike, then I stopped! I gave it 3 chances, it failed all of them! first time I thought it was my cousin's fault, as she's only 9 years old, so I didn't let her use my tablet after the first time the pen's tip was destroyed, then, the second time, it still got damaged in a week's time, so I thought, maybe I was the one being rough, but then, even when I tried my best to be considerate, it didn't last for more than 2 weeks, so, yeah, this paperlike isn't for me, and apparently, it isn't good for anyone who needs to use their stylus a lot! thanks for the review :3
I’ve used an off brand screen protector for a little over a year and have had none of these issues, I’ve recently switched back to glass simply for the fact my screen protector needed replaced from dust accumulating under it and I haven’t bought a new one. Any sort of scratch on the screen was made in left over residue from oils on my hands. I never saw wear and tear on my pencil but i know that it is very common sense the screen has more grit. For the screen protector I used the noise wasn’t horrible but it was noticeable, but after awhile I got used to it, and it worked well to diffuse the light and I could work outside. His video seems that he may have been unhappy with his experience and wanted to urge people to not buy it but don’t let that stop you from buying a cheaper one to test if you like it or not. The one I purchase was a matte screen protector on Amazon that at the time was $10ish for a pack of two.
I agree. I made recent videos talking about $10 screen protectors on amazon that are cheaper and overall a better product. There are many 1 star amazon reviews that have had the same experiences in this video. So it is a common issue. I felt that most youtube videos on this product were not giving an honest review of the cons of this item for an artist perspective which is who the product is for.

Instead of paperlike, I like to use pentips. They’re silicone tips for over your Apple Pencil tip. This will both protect the tip and give more precision and texture :)
You realize you can replace the tips? Therefore you’re not “destroying your Apple Pencil”…. On top of that you have to be writing/drawing like a maniac to get it down to the metal…. This is why RUclips needs to bring back the dislike counter
The brand is not a scam, so please don't lie about it. i believe saying it destroys your pencil is total nonsense... it just wears down the tip and that is completely normal, it is how friction works, you cannot have a matte screen protector without it wearing out your pen and itself at some point. It is like saying the Wacom tablet is destroying by Wacom pencil and now both are worn down. it is the same principle. Like, my man, that is how friction works, and even on a flat surface the tip still wears down... indeed much slower, but it still does. that is why they sell new tips separately. And yes you can look to prove your own points, but how about falsifying them? how about you not show a screen protector cut with a razor (because if those are the marks your pen left, your ipad would have been long gone by now), and how about u not show the screen protector in the sun at the most awkward angle no one will ever use. In the end it all sums up to your expectations about the product, you cannot have friction without damage and even if the screen protector was made of glass with an abrasive surface so it would appear matte, it would still wear down itself and the tip. And if you don t want that, don t get it and by any means don t spread such bad rumors about it. i have been using it myself for a year now and i had to change both the tip and the screen protector, because they were worn out. But fun fact, that is also mentioned on the official site, that it lasts for roughly 1 year. If you are not willing to spend money on that, then don t do it but don t lie about it. also, ps. you can clean it with a wet wipe any time if it gets dirty.
Very helpful! Like many others I was debating getting paperlike when I upgrade. I have tempered glass on my current ipad and honestly I don't have any issue drawing with it. And it protects my screen and no damage to my pencil. So I think I have a clear choice now LMAO

@@cjones1982 Their view of it is still valid though. I have a generation 2 apple pencil, Ipad pro, and a paperlike screen protector. Ive had them all for around 6-7 months and ive had the same tip since i first got all of them. Ive very heavy handed, digital or non digital art. My screen still looks good. Although he made some good points about glare, dullness of the colors when drawing, and a few other things. But when he spoke about how scratched the screen protector was after using it a lot, i just couldn’t listen anymore. That’s going to happen to almost any screen protector on any device but it’s simply doing it’s job: protecting your screen.
Like my sister said once when she used my iPad for drawing something “why spend 500$ on an iPad and pencil for drawing and note taking and not try to get used to the more slippery surface instead of buying a screen protector that makes it feel like paper when you can use regular paper instead” I agree I don’t have paperlike and I don’t need it. I got used to the iPad by 2 months of having it and I’ve realized that sometimes my writing even looks better on the iPad screen
Honestly, i may be in a very small minority of artists here, but when i buy a protector for my drawing tablet, i ALWAYS go for a pure glass protector. I don't like the feel of drawing on paper, It is awesome, ON ACTUAL PAPER, but on a tablet, the constant scratching and vibrations i hear even through my headphones make me feel like i'm doing something wrong, maybe i'm pushing too hard, or something, and that i may end up breaking something. But when i move to a glass protector.... MAAAN, i feel alive! not only are the colors much nicer and more vibrant, but also i can swing my pencil away in any way i want, with as much pressure as i want, i'm not debating on my glass protector's durability, cause it is glass, it won't scratch.:D To me, these things are much more important than possibility of some glare.
I purchased a $10 matte protector when I got my iPad Pro a while back (came with 2). A buddy of mine who is an animator at Cartoon Network recommended it to me. feels just like paper and to be honest, any matte protector will give you that feel of resistance. I've had it for 3 years now and still looks like new. I think paying almost $40 for a sheet of plastic is beyond me.
I recently got an iPad Pro but before that I had a standard iPad with the first-gen Apple Pencil. I used the Pencil for THREE YEARS and still has no damage whatsoever to the tip. The fact that a “premium” protector requires you to replace tips (and the protector itself mind you) constantly is absolutely farcical and a huge waste of money.
I used the first gen apple pencil on a normal ipad 9, with no screen protector, for a few months and the tip still got damaged. I now use an ipad pro with a paper feel screen protector and theres been no damage to the tip so far. It really just depends on how much pressure you use + how often you use it
Well, you don’t buy a Paperlike to protect your screen. You buy it to get a, well, paper-like drawing experience. Which will of course wear down your pencil tips faster than smooth glass. That’s a drawback most people who want a paper-like drawing experience are willing to accept.
The paperlike shipping price to my country was the same amount as the screen protector itself (way too expensive, and that’s before the tax that I would get charged when it arrived) so I decided not to get it and opted for glass. I use my iPad for note taking, not art and I love the glass screen protector. It works perfectly fine and I saw the drawbacks of using a matte screen protector especially the loss in quality when I was doing research about what protector to buy. I wanted to use my M1 iPad as a media consumption device which is why I opted for glass.
Paperlike call it a screen protector, but if that is the reason you buy it, you won’t be happy with it. The only reason to buy it is if you seek more friction for your pen.

I’m a math teacher and use my iPad all the time to teach. I love PaperLike, but I hate that the Apple Pencil wears down the screen protector so fast as well as the tip itself. It lasts about 3 months of teaching before I have to replace both. I’m looking into the new resistant tips available nowadays.
As an alternative to Paperlike, the Spigen Paper Touch Pro Glass is much more durable and doubles up as a screen protector alongside a matte finish for ease of drawing. it’s probably the best for an artist or someone who wants to take notes, but not so much for anyone who just wants protection for their iPad. great video, though. i was about to grab a Paperlike protector for a friend but decided i was just gonna get them the Spigen one after this vid. thanks a ton!
I'm new to drawing on an iPad, and was totally frustrated by my inability to control the marks I was making due to the Apple pencil was sliding all over the place on the glass surface. I just got an Icarez screen protector and it has transformed my drawings. I'm not having to delete my linework repeatedly. I'm using Procreate and Fresco for my surface pattern design business. I'll gladly spend the few extra $ for tip replacements just to increase my drawing productivity and reduce my frustration levels. My time is more valuable than wasting it redoing my drawings. The cost of the paper like screen protector and replacement nibs is way below the cost associated with reduced productivity.
Yeah, I tried Paperlike. The advertising is voracious, and the product fails to live up to the hype. It was even too opaque for my needs compared with other, less expensive, products.
If four pen tips cost between 7 and 14 dollars, let’s say 10 on average then one costs 2.5. So you need to pay extra 2.5 dollars every 6 months, oh no you are financially ruined
1. I had paperlike on my iPad Pro for a couple years, and never had a problem. I then changed my Paperlike when they came out with the updated version, had it two more year, no problem. I use my Apple Pencil A LOT. And the only time i ever had to change the tip… yes, you can buy extra tips because they can wear out or break… was when I tripped the pencil and it his a hard floor smack on the tip and broke it. So I’m wondering… how hard are you pressing when you write and draw?

He’s exaggerating for likes. There’s no way an Apple Pencil nib made those scratches. I’ve had paperlike for two years and don’t even have light scratches on the screen. With or without the protector, the ni s will need replacement. They wear down.

When I first got my current iPad I looked for options to make the screen and the pencil tip last longer while I could also have enough control. This might be a little exaggerated for some of you, but the truth is that Apple is not really affordable in Mexico, so take this just as my experience. I have a sort of trauma with protecting the screens of my devices as soon as I get them, so the first thing I got was a tempered glass protector (around $100.00MXN). The friction of the pencil and the screen was non-existent, so I couldn’t write properly and thought of getting a simple matte protector ($72.04MXN). When I was purchasing it I also decided to buy pen tips ($43.48, pack of 8 multiple colors) to see which option was better for me. At the end I realized the glare on the screen was annoying and kept the matte protector on for that, but the sound the pencil made when it touched the screen was so annoying (and made me feel like my tip was going to burn down in no time) that I decided to put on the pen tip. At first it was so much friction that I couldn’t use it properly the first 2 days, but then I got used to the friction and it has been the best combo ever. I’m someone who puts a lot of pressure on the paper when I write, so this somehow allowed me to control that pressure while keeping safe both my screen and pencil. I haven’t had the need to replace the matte protector and I’m still on my second pen tip after almost 1 year. In total I spent a portion of the products from brands like Paperlike and got perfect results, so I can tell you that even Aliexpress products work just fine and you can save up a lot of money while you protect both your screen and pencil, you just need to find the right combo. P.S. I bought mine at Shopee, not Aliexpress. P.S. 2. I think Paperlike is overrated and I actually was concerned of getting my Apple Pencil wearing down easily with a matte protector. I’m so glad I actually took precautions.
I’m not really and artists but I use my Apple Pencil a lot for notes. I have never used Paperlike because I don’t like matte screen protectors. Instead I use a glass screen protector, because I worry about dropping it or something, along with silicone nibs to put on the tip of my Apple Pencil. It gives me the traction of a matte screen protector while both protecting my pencil and not impacting the look of my screen at all. It honestly works great for me for anything I need to use my iPad for.
Thanks for calling out this issue. I bought an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for my daughter's art. When I compare a 4 pack of new tips for $15 once a year to the cost of new physical paper art notebooks, pens, pencils, and other art supplies... it's a no brainer. New tips once a year it is! The ipad has literally already paid for itself just based on the paper I've been able to avoid buying.

As a traditional artist making the switch to digital art, I really enjoy paper like but I go through nibs pretty fast. My Apple Pencil is fine though, the nibs just wear down. I go through about 1 per month as I use it roughly 8-12 hrs a day for both my day job and art. It’s not something I mind as I have replaced my sketchbook, many notebooks and supplies so the money I would normally spend on art supplies, I spend on nibs and screen protectors and still save a good amount of money. Considering it’s way too hot to draw outside in texas about 65-70% of the year, I’m ok with a dull screen. I haven’t had any issues using it in public places with bright lighting as long as I don’t have the screen laying too flat. I will usually pull the artwork into illustrator on my MacBook to see the true colors and tweak anything if necessary. Hope that helps if any beginners are considering using paper like or a cheaper alternative! I think it’s worth it for digital asset beginners that are used to drawing on texture!!
I've been drawing traditionally for ten years. only this year, was I able to afford an older ipad gen. it is my baby, my sunshine, you get it. truly, it is much easier to draw and color with it, than with the mouse. now, this screen protector was recommended to me by someone, but since we don't have it in local shops, I ended up getting a basic one. this was my luck. but sadly I really press the pencil on the screen (did the same on paper back then) so I'm afraid of possible damages still.
I’ve never used paper like, but I’ve been using a similar paper textured protector for 2 years now and it doesn’t wear my Apple Pencil that much after a year of use. And it definitely does sound like regular paper as well, as the sounds are not as scratchy as a paper like protector.
It literally did it to me too! I had to change the tips 3-4 times since I bought the paperlike screen protector. I haven't changed it once since I took it off the ipad.
I have a matte screen protector and I use it here and there and a lot sometimes, I don't think its paperlike but it's worked great for me, no cuts, marks, or wearing down on the pencil
Finally someone talks about this kind of screen protectors. Sad to see even now, little to no one dares to express their true thoughts about it. I hate textured screen protectors because they wear off my pens and I can't afford replacing them so often. Glossy screen is superior by far
it was pretty clear from the beginning that a matte screen protector regardless if it is paperlike or any other will wear down the pencil. the matte texture simply is like that so im not really surprised

I used to have a paperlike that was gifted to me and it was so weird, before that I had a regular glass screen protector and I could draw just fine but with paperlike I had to press harder with my pencil definitely not worth the $40 Then I bought a matte screen protector for $8 and it worked waaay better than the paperlike one it detected my Apple Pencil just fine without the need to press harder
This video doesn’t seem to really present a problem. I have both and my experience with the paperlike screen protector doesn’t really impair the screens color range. The glair from a naked iPad screen and smudges on said naked screen is much worse. And yes, if you press hard with the pencil on the screen, you will damage the screen screen protector or no screen protector.
The quick wear down and noticeable marking on the screen protector are big problems. I've tested alternative screen protectors and these problems are minimal in comparison. Brands like Tech Armor have a much better texture, quality, and show no marks after 1 week like Paperlike did. Bellemond actually feels like paper much more then Paperlike aswell. I was a fan of Paperlike at first but the negatives for the $40 price are not really worth it.

Yep! I can confirm. I had a pencil for 3+ years without this type of screen protector. No significant wear on the tip. Got a new iPad and new pencil and used it for a year with a textured screen protector and saw metal. In fact, it was only 5 days ago that I replaced the tip. BUT, that’s the thing: I got 6 good tips for only $6. So who cares? Didn’t ruin the pencil, just wore out the tip.

You do realise you're meant to replace the Apple Pencil tip every 4 to 6 months. I have a Paperlike screen protector on my iPad Pro and it hasn't destroyed anything. The thing that breaks the most is my iPad Pro itself bending.
It's normal that it start to damage the pin from an apple pencil when it's used daily, it happens also to the pen of graphics tables, at some time you have to change that tip

The price on the tips are just outrageous! This is why I just put supper glue on the tip, add baking soda, repeat until there’s a lump and file it down to a point with a nail file. It lasts me 5-6 months. I wish more people would know this trick😭
Legit. Keep it real. My issue wasn’t with my tips from the Apple Pencil, it was with the lasting marks on the screen pro. I don’t see the prob with $15 a year or so for new tips. Heck I probably break or bend my tips more often than wearing it down. But damn the paper like was soooo over rated. Glad you made this vid.

i used on a galaxy tab s7+ the pens they have are rubber su rub off after like a month and you need order them all the time its even wors then on ipad soo now i got ipad pro 11 2021 and for sure i wont buy paperlike not worth it
No matter the screen protector you use, you have to change your Apple Pencil tip at some point. It also depends on how hard you’re pressing. Yes you’re going to get marks on any iPad screen protector.
I use a different brand of matte screen protector. It doesn't "destroy" the apple pencil. It just wears down the replaceable tip. I tried out the iPad pro without the screen protector and couldn't stand the feel of the pencil tip on the glass surface. For the streaks, I wipe down the screen protector with a microfiber cloth. The marks all come off. I've been using the same screen protector for the last 2 years of daily use. It's not destroyed
I've been using Paperlike for 2 years to draw and I've no issues with anything you just said. Sure, there's a minor scratch on one side but no biggie. My Apple Pencil tip is still alive and the screen is still fine to draw and watch videos. Now I'm not sure if I'm using it right or wrong 😅
Replace the tips soon as I get a bit worn down. Yup your gonna lose some sharpness in the display but I’m fine with that for the drawing purposes. But there’s no way I would let my Apple Pencil OR the paperlike get this destroyed as bad as yours looked how could you get clean lines with huge trenches!? I kinda feel like this is a Bit overdone of a hate review. It’s not a glass protector so it will need to be replaced that’s why they give you 2. And you keep saying it’s destroying the “Apple pencil” but it’s only effecting the replaceable tip. I definitely appreciate the time you took and the unpopular opinion. Great job on that. But like I said I feel like your avoiding the fact that the pencil tips and the protector will not last forever. That’s “the take” and give part of getting the paperlike feel over the slippery glass. And for someone that goes back and forth with iPad and paper on a daily basis I need someone Like paperlike so I can easily go from sketch to spray and to the wall. But respect to you and you’re channel my friend.
Thanks for this review! I felt exactly the same as you when first looking into paperlike- it was recommended everywhere and I felt like I needed it. I just didnt like that it reduced the quality of the iPad after we spent so much money to just see these colors.
Glad to hear i'm not the only one. I switched to Tech Armor awhile back after trying to draw on the bear glass for a few weeks and for me it was better quality for a 1/4th of the price. Did you find another alternative that worked for you?

I’ve had paperlike (2.0) since not long after it came out. I’ve never worn through a pencil; I use it primarily and heavily for note taking at work (uni before that). I’d say I’m a medium user - I’m not incentivised to use super heavy pressure like some artists might be. I’ve never gotten scratches like yours (I have a case that folds over the screen, possibly helping). I replaced the screen protector once with the included backup after a couple years because the edges were coming up due to the case pushing in over the edge. As mentioned, i’ve never had to replace a nib, though to be fair for the first year or so I used a Pentip silicon nib cover (it fell off and I decided I liked the scritchy scritch noise more than the softer taps now that I wasn’t in lecture theatres). In terms of marks from fingers, the thumb spots do become slightly less matte over time, being a little more transparent. The resistance in these areas on the pencil also dropped slightly, but I far preferred this barely noticeable, gradual texture to the rare but intolerable nib-on-glass experience of going over a mildly oily area and sliding out, or picking up a bit of dust and carrying it around. I’d be surprised to find a matte protector that does less damage to the nib than paperlike 2.0, given the smooth flat surface of its textured bumps, and I preferred the slightly blown out light versus full glare reflection. That being said, my iPad of 4.5 years started to die and so I have upgraded and currently I’m going bare glass with no intent to get paperlike again. I’ve gotten to the point in transitioning to pen on matte as a mid ground that the use of pen on glass isn’t that bad, and if I want a matte I might be more tempted by the removable ones like Pen Mat, just to spare the risk of bubbles and to have the full glory of the screen when I want it.
I feel like part of the wear on the paperlike is due to the fact that the Apple Pencil was stripped to the metal before the tip was replaced, and I feel like paying $7-$15 every 2 years isn’t an issue if you can afford a 13 inch M1 iPad Pro. I do agree that the brightness and color accuracy being kinda killed is an issue though. I feel like the wear issue is mostly due to not replacing Apple Pencil tips when needed though.
I don’t see the problem with replacing an $8 pencil tip. I hear paper like gets glossy quickly however. That and the diffusion prevents me from getting it.
I think that no matter what matt screen protector one should use, it will always wear down the pencil, since it will generate more friction that a smooth glass screen. Even if a nib only lasts for six months, a pack of four is still only 14 dollars for two years, which I would say is a pretty good deal.
I have had the paperlike on my iPad for 3 years now. I am not an artist. I use it every day nearly for work notes. I have not had to buy a new tip for my Apple Pencil or a new screen protector. I really do not understand how you think note taking is causing this. I absolutely hated the feel of glass on plastic. While it isn’t exactly like pen and paper it is much closer.
I personally use paperfeel, it’s more than half the price and I don’t feel terrible about my tips cause they’re only like $10 usd on amazon and they last a whole year for me. I’m not a pro at all and I don’t use it daily so I’m ok with it. I honestly do like the matte screen over the glass, and I have the ipad air so I don’t feel too bad about the tips 😅
paperlike doesn't destroy the $100 apple pencil... 😃 it destroys the $3 pencil tip lmao. i'm already having fun getting knock off colored tips. anyone with a wacom or other drawing tablets already know rubbing plastic on a textured surface is a destructive process that will have you replacing tips it's like being suprised your shows wear down when walking on hard concrete, this stuff happens. anyways, 2 other options to try, the magnetic removable paper like screen covers, or the soft plastic drawing tip covers , has nice resistance. or use both at the same time
every single matte screen protector is going to wear down the nib at different rates depending on how much pressure you use when drawing. it’s just how it is, if you’ve ever used a regular drawing tablet like wacom intuos you know it’ll come with like 5 extra nibs because that is EXPECTED. the TRUE question is why a $1000 product comes in such shitty quality that some people report being ruined in 2 months using a regular matte screen protector. it’s surreal.
Using the paper like screen protector after only 5 weeks I had to get new tips for my apple pencil and another thing the iPad has pressure sensitivity so when I went harder it made the process faster of buying new tips for my apple pencil
I mean, matte screen protector to enhance drag and feel like paper is what “paperlike” is about, you can’t just say “Oh this screen protector destroyed my pencil” because it will wear even without that. Which also seems exaggerated to say “destroy”, if it destroys it then no one would do such thing, it just wears it somewhat faster depending on your daily use but it doesn’t even damage the pen itself, just wears the tip. Wear is a given, the matte SP has that texture to give that feeling when dragging the pencil on the screen and WILL increase the wear of the pen tip because of the same fact, is a tradeoff along with a diffused brightness and colors because it’s either one or the other. Replacing nibs is not even that expensive when you are looking for the quality and cost of the device itself. This feels like someone giving a bad review to a skateboard brand in specific because their shoes got worn down because of it (skateboards will wear them down faster because of the friction of the rougher surface and other variables) Which imo feels like an obvious dumb review because it’s just pointing the obvious, nonetheless is a good quality video.
I think the negatives named in this video are unavoidable for this kind of product. If you want more friction for your pencil, it will wear down the tip. If you want a rougher surface, the screen won‘t be as crystal clear.

OK, this this is completely right. I have used my iPad with a pencil for a long time with both mate screen protector and without it, and I used my iPad for gaming too. Mate screen protector looks good in the beginning but after some time it completely annoys use because you can’t game properly on it, because it degrades quickly over time and because it distorts image colour and clarity significantly. Remember that your devices were designed to be used without screen protectors. And without case. So if you don’t drop your device frequently (I have dropped my phone only once, when my leg slipped on ice) and have at least some confidence in your person - don’t use cases and screen protectors, especially the mate film like Paperlike. And yes, drawing with Apple Pencil on a glass is better.
I use Spigen's Paper Touch instead of Paperlike. It honestly depends on the usage of your ipad. I use mine mainly for note-taking, and I hate using apple pencil on a smooth glass surface, so I bought one that imitates the texture of a paper and it's been serving me well. Yes, generally matte screen protector like this will reduce the "quality" of your ipad screen to some degree (compared to glass screen) but it's not that bad tbh. Necessary trade off imo because I wanted to have that natural paper feel. I don't mind replacing my Apple Pencil tip every 6 months either. Tho I'd suggest everyone else not to buy Paperlike and go for cheaper/better alternatives. It's overhyped, durability sucks, and a bit too pricy.

I'm so glad I didn't buy it, I'm from Brazil so the price is insane, I can't even afford to buy a new tip if it breaks so adding 40$ and replacing the tip constantly would be awful for my situation
I’m scared to try again with any paper like or any other knockoffs anymore. I bought a few knockoffs and subsequently ruined 2 apple pencils. I haven’t confirmed that the issues my pencils had were directly related to the screen protector, but the damage to the nibs definitely were.

Im pretty sure the pencil gets worn out anyways regardless of screen protector. I don’t use paperlike and that happened to me. I also don’t mind buying a pack of 4 tips for about less than 15 dollars. One tip every 2 years, that makes spending 15 dollars every 8 years, I’d say that’s pretty affordable

It doesn’t, I used my Apple Pencil on a smooth surface for MONTHS and nothing was wrong and ever since I got paper like the pencil is getting worn down day by day
I’m an artist as well. I’ve had paperlike for a year with my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 inch. I love it. I’ve found that scratching and wearing down of the pencil happens when the screen has dust or dirt on it. It causes friction between the pencil and screen. I tend to wipe my pencil tip and screen before I begin drawing. It’s helped a lot.
How long did your pen tip last? Have you ever changed?

Did it ruin your whole $100 Apple Pencil though? Sounds a bit like throwing the baby out with the bath water. The nibs are a consumable part of the Apple Pencil (they even give you your first replacement free in the box). If they’re lasting folks 6 months, and a 4-pack runs $8, that’s $4/yr in tips 🤷🏼♀️.

They are but not that fast, they want you to spend more on nibs these days, or you don't know how old wacom tabs used to come without that annoying texture... Now they added to sell more nibs

@@dogkun20 In the regular cintiqs, they do have the scratchy texture but the main problem with that are screen scratches. The cintiq pros have a smoother texture that avoids it.
New digital artists need to remember that nibs wearing out happen normally with regular use. Even before the Apple Pencil was a thing.

I’m glad to finally see a real review on these; personally I found that while I COULD deal with the tip being worn so much (even though it feels somehow damaging to the Apple Pencil itself to be subjected to all this friction), I could not deal with how much worse the quality/resolution of the screen became- the iPad had such a crisp bright screen before the matte protector that I could not handle more than a few days with it. Also I found that it somewhat decreased touch sensitivity.
I’m the same here. I had it on for about a year. It wore down my pencil, and the quality decrease was kinda terrible. My iPad felt very dated and old, I took it off the other day and it felt like I had a whole new device. The color accuracy was MUCH improved. I had to go back several times and re-color a couple pieces because of the color diffusion. I’m trying the silicon pencil tips now to see how it is.
I had the same experience. I tried paperlike and the screen just looked so much worse in my opinion. You can see each pixel being refracted into multiple colors dude to the roughness of the screen protector. :(
It doesn't have effect the apple pencils functions in any way, shape or form.
The nib will always wear down and be destroyed after usage, whether that's in 3yrs, 1yr, 6mnths or 1mnth it'll ALWAYS wear down. That's how it is. The nib is the ONLY thing being effected by wear and tear.
That's how it was supposed to be designed, and applying pressure, up til a certain point(obviously if you Hulk tf out then you're an idiot, and your iPad is guaranteed going to have damage. That's a you issue, not the nib, pen, or screen protector issue) point. There's a reason for it, it's designed specifically for such use. And why it has x amount of pressure sensitivity and why the activation force is tremendously low. To give you the best utmost experience while using it. Whether you're a student or an artist.
Paperlike has a matte finish, 100% of the screen protectors that are going for the paper like feel, will have a matte finish.
This reduces the color accuracy, by not too much, but for some enough to be a dealbreaker. It's one of the reasons Wacom has changed the way it does the screen on their high end products.
But all Wacoms old products, like the 22hd and the new, cheaper(not by much) products have the matte finish issue.
But you'd have to remember everyone has varying color profiles on their phones, computers and tablets. Even if the colors are perfect, someone won't see em as perfect as you.
What you want out of the experience of art is up to you, but you can't condemn paperlike cause of the matte finish. This was always a problem with these things.
Doesn't damage your pencil, it just adds increased wear and tear to the nibs, meaning your wallet will hurt more than the pencil. And will actually feel a hit to it than the pencil does.
Just buy the metal tips. They’re made for paper like screen protectors specifically to make it more of a pen and paper experience
Get a metal tip for your Apple Pencil and buy a magnetic matte screen protector that you can remove
I’m pretty sure it also depends how hard your way to draw is. I don’t put a lot of pressure on my own stylus, and I remember having clean intuos Wacom tablets and very sensitive pressure settings while my fellow students were literally digging holes into their own tablets.

Im an illustrator, had my apple pencil for 4-5 years and never had such an issue when using paperlike. My first assumption is that this guy has more of a heavy hand and is making more friction against the matte finish. I have a light hand even with a regular pencil but I still create marks on my paperlike screen. Kinda seems like it just comes with time. Though, It’s never been an issue to watch shows thru my marks, don’t even notice them. Maybe if you have a similar heavy-handed output then you should not get paperlike but honestly, not sure. I think a matte/glass screen protector is still valuable purchase even if its not paperlike. And if you use paperlike and they mess up your nibs, it will cost you a mere fraction of $100 to get replacement nibs. I understand some of the negatives he mentioned but I also don’t think I’ve ever wanted to use my iPad in such lighting environments. I don’t make drawing outside a norm because whether you have a matte screen protector or not, you’re going to have to max out the brightness to be able to draw in the first place. That just drains the battery faster and gives you less drawing/screen time. Any other glares mentioned don’t tend to happen because you can move anywhere with an iPad and is generally positioned at an angle (away from top lit lighting) If I were drawing with a light glaring directly above me for creating some social media content, then sure, I guess I would see this as an issue but it’s not realistic on the day to day for a majority of people.

That’s crazy. I had my matte screen protector for 2 years now and the marks on the screen protector doesn’t look as bad as the Paperlike screen protector shown in the video. And my Apple Pencil just started wearing down. Sheesh, Paperlike seems like a scam honestly.
Edit: I forgot i made this comment. I made myself look like i hate matte screen protectors lmfao. The nib wearing down isn't a concern for me as long as i have control over my lines. Get one in a double pack and don't spend over 20 bucks on it and you should be set for at least the next year. And since the texture on those tends to be a bit more subtle, it has like a velvety feel to it and the image quality doesn't suffer as much as with a paperlike. Not to mention you apple pencil tips won't be wearing down so much
Thank you for the video! I've been drawing on a glass screen protector for 2 years and I've recently been thinking if I should switch to a paperlike one since so many artists in my country recommended it. Some even said it's worth changing the pencil tips. But after watching your video, I don't feel the need to change anymore since I'm already used to drawing on glass protector and my apple pencil is still in good shape after 2 years of regular use.

Stylus nibs are going to wear out eventually, just the same as you go through paints and pencils, and just as a toothy, heavy paper is going to absorb more paint or eat away at a pencil, adding more friction to the surface of the tablet is going to wear out the nib faster. That is completely normal and expected. That's the tradeoff you make for the control the friction provides on the tablet. He made a couple other points that I would have liked to see explored more, but he chose to focus on the stylus...

It will, it`s pretty simple physics. If there is friction between two objects one has to wear off. Pen nibs are designed to be soft and wear off because if they weren`t screen would have to wear off. Thats the whole point, making nibs to wear off and protect screen this way. Now it seems pretty obvious why paperlike screen protector makes it wear off faster, simply because there is more friction. And whole point of paperlike protector is to provide more friction. It`s just physics, it has to be that way because world works that way. It`s not even disadvantage, it`s just something u have to bear if u want more friction while drawing.
How freaking hard are you pressing down? I've had Paperlike on my iPad pro for almost two years and have been drawing on it daily for almost a year with nothing like this happening to my apple pencil...I also have none of those streaks or scratches on my Paperlike. 🤷🏻♀️
This is obviously an exaggeration manufacturer for content. I don't use paper-like but my tip gets worn down pretty quickly from constantly taking notes, but you will feel the metal scraping as soon it is exposed and will rotate the the pen to wear it down evenly and all around before discarding the tip. And even then it doesn't look as close to what he is claiming.

Actually I also used Paperlike and ruined 4 pencil tips. Consider that I have an extremely light hand, also when drawing/writing on regular paper.
Pressing down really hard when drawing is reeeeally bad for your hand, it’ll nearly always lead to tendonitis and eventually, nerve damage. The latter has killed many art careers. I hope the thumbnail was an intentional exaggeration and he just cut the nib and that isn’t actually the result of 6months of drawing, because otherwise he’d be wise to see an occupational therapist to review his drawing techniques and change to something less destructive for his hands health and longevity.
i’ve had my ipad for a good 6 months maybe and ive had the same tip on my apple pencil since i first got it. I have a paper-like screen protector and my pencil is doing just fine. I’m heavy hand when drawing/writing btw.
The wearing of the Apple Pencil isn’t even the biggest issue for me. It’s the loss of screen quality. I’m sorry but with how far we’ve come with the iPads and all it has now - Liquid Retina Display, 120hz refresh rate, 1600 nits max brightness, mini-LED Display, True Tone - it’s not worth losing even some of that by dulling the screen down with a matte protector.
Maybe it’s because I’m not an artist and I’d get the iPad Pro solely for work and pleasure that I wouldn’t get a matte screen protector, but I want my viewing experience to be superb and the matte screen will just take away from that in my opinion.
Yes this. I have used both a first generation iPad Pro as well as (my new and current device after I passed the other one to my grandma) and I have tried three matte ones, and no matter the price all of them did ruin the quality. As I do use my iPad a lot of reading papers too, It’s a catastrophe. I am fine with the slick feeling, if it was just the texture, I wouldn’t give a duck about the tip. But the image and sharpness and contrast being so off is terrible! (I am also an artist, so… yeah no, not worth it, maybe a silicon or washi tape wrapped tip can help if the slip is such a huge issue)
As an artist I’m still driven away from it because it just murders screen quality. I’d love to have the feel of paper like, but I wouldn’t trade off the screen for it honestly.

I have an amazon 'dupe' to the Paperlike on my iPad and it honestly outperforms the actual 'name brand' Paperlike lol it blows it out of the water. Paperlike's installation is so painful so I said never again. The dupe is just amazing and I am a STEM student who takes a crap load of notes EVERYDAY. So far, after 2 years of use I haven't seen significant wear on my pencil tip!

I use paperlike and I really like it. I love the feeling of the texture while drawing. I feel like all the issues posed in this video are very exaggerated, especially the wearing of the pencil tip. When I used to use wacom tablets before getting my ipad, the nibs were actually wearing down much faster and I had to keep buying new ones every 6 months or so because they got a scratchy sharp edge from the friction. I've been using the same paperlike protector and the same pencil tip for 8 months now and while I can see the tip definitely looks used, it's still perfectly fine. Yeah, there are scratch marks on the protector but I can't even see them when the screen is on. And it makes me feel better that the scratch marks are on the protector rather than on the tablet itself. I mean that's what a protector is for. I have a protector on my galaxy s20+ and even though I don't draw on that, it's full of scratches because that's its purpose, to protect the screen from getting scratched. Everything else mentioned has never been an issue for me either. Sorry but this whole video just screams click bait
For real. Why are we expecting indestructible tools just because they're tech based? Things wear down. Everything. Even Apple products.
It probably depends a lot on how much pressure you use when you write. I imagine someone who writes really hard will wear down the tips and scuff the protector up much faster than someone who is light and gentle with the pencil. That could explain why some people blow through tips like crazy with Paperlike while others have no issues.
Any screen protector would scratch anyway, nothing lasts forever. I agree with you for sure, the tips are very exaggerated and i feel like that could be bad advice for people who were considering buying a paper feel screen protector.
lol yeah when I used Wacom in the past, the pen stand it came with actually had built in storage for the spare tips because it was considered normal to replace them.
I've used paperlike over the last 3-4 years and i think they work good. Peronally i've never had an issue with the nibs wearing down quickly. I bought a 4 pack of nibs for about 90 kr (about 8-9 US dollars) because i was noticed some wear om the nib. But imo, switching out the nibs about once a year aint that bad, especially when you only need to pay 8-9 dollars every four years :)
But something i do have an issue with regarding paperlike is that the surface gets smooths out and looses its texture too fast. This has mostly been a problem with the newest model of paperlike though. So thats a negative for me.
But all in all its a good but somewhat pricey product.
Regarding using the iPad without any screenprotector at all i whould'nt recomend it because if you happen to scratch or damage the screen in some other way it whould be way more expensive to replace the screen then it whould be to replace a screenprotector.
All in all, there's many Good screenprotectors that gives a paper feeling. You don't have to buy specifically paperlike but i whould recommend a screenprotector to anyone who uses an iPad, for art or otherwise :)

You didn't notice it then, the texture will always worns out the nip, it's just logic, its what textures do that's why all old tablets didn't have that texture and not that baby texture on the new ones, it's just to make you buy new nibs

We also have to keep in mind how heavy handed we are with our Apple Pencil. Ive had to remind myself tht I don’t have to use as much pressure to make a mark on my iPad. Especially if you just up the sensitivity, you can put the bare minimum amount of pressure on your ipad, prolonging the pencil tips life as well as any screen protectors you may use (matte or not) and the ipad screen itself. We can also use pencil tips and avoid using matte screen protectors all together.
Though I haven't used iPads much for drawing, I do have plenty of experience with drawing tablets (with and without screens) and it's a given that you'll have to replace both the nibs on your pen and your screen protector on a regular basis. Almost every graphics tablet worth buying comes with about six to eight extra nibs for this reason. With or without a textured screen protector, you have to replace nibs, this is part of digital art. You have to buy new utensils all the time for traditional art. And whether you consider it worth the extra price to get that paper feel is up to you. I personally have always preferred smooth glass, but if I liked the textured feel better, I'd pay for it. And for the dull color thing, textured screen protectors are brought up in many tablet reviews when talking about colors. This is part of why so many people prefer to get tablets with higher color gamuts than you'd find on the screens that people will be using to look at your art on.
TL;DR This is all up to preference. It's not stupid to go with a paperlike or similar screen protector. Use what you prefer. And please use a screen protector, even if it's not textured, so you don't scratch your screen. The nibs will wear down no matter what, and become sharp.

I think it depends on how hard you press down as well. I’ve have mine going on 4 years and while I don’t do art and take notes every single day I used my pen pretty often and I haven’t had to change out my tip yet, and I haven’t changed my screen protector in a couple of years either. So I guess it just depends on maintenance and use.
to the people saying “well sometimes you’re not rich enough to get tips” first off, yes in this economy its hard to buy tips, BUT he did mention six months to a year his apple pencil tip needs to be replaced so, a pack of four for 17 dollars is around buying 1 per 2 years.
another thing added to this list. even if you have a gloss protector IT WILL BE DAMAGED!! if you research a little bit, it will be matte and is for a nicer feel not a nicer look, it is supposed to feel like a drawing tablet as well. Umm...everyone realizes that you need to replace the nib or the tip every once in a while. The natural friction from the screen without any protection will wear down a nib. Replacements are $20 USD on the Apple website. We know this right?

With or without the screen protector you’d still have to replace the nib over time. Every single drawing tablet will wear down the nibs. The screen protector is not the problem, or anything at that, it just happens as you use it.

This happened to me too. I normally am a really hard writer, I use to break my lead pencils all the time. It translated over to my writing on my iPad with the paper like screen protector. Completely ruined my pen tip :( I switched to a glass screen protector this semester so let’s hope it won’t happen again.

After over a year of using a glass protector, my pen tip is still in good shape! It’s barely showing any wear and tear so I’ll probably estimate a year or two before needing to change it.

I bought a metal ballpoint pen-feel tip for my apple pencil when I bought my paperlike screen protector and so far have had no issues. I draw with a bit more friction than your normal person so my screen protector has a few scratches from that. but I highly recommend getting a different tip for your pencil if you have a paperlike screen protector even if you don’t write/draw hard. it’s a lifesaver :)

I have used the paperlike, then I stopped! I gave it 3 chances, it failed all of them! first time I thought it was my cousin's fault, as she's only 9 years old, so I didn't let her use my tablet after the first time the pen's tip was destroyed, then, the second time, it still got damaged in a week's time, so I thought, maybe I was the one being rough, but then, even when I tried my best to be considerate, it didn't last for more than 2 weeks, so, yeah, this paperlike isn't for me, and apparently, it isn't good for anyone who needs to use their stylus a lot! thanks for the review :3

I’ve used an off brand screen protector for a little over a year and have had none of these issues, I’ve recently switched back to glass simply for the fact my screen protector needed replaced from dust accumulating under it and I haven’t bought a new one. Any sort of scratch on the screen was made in left over residue from oils on my hands. I never saw wear and tear on my pencil but i know that it is very common sense the screen has more grit. For the screen protector I used the noise wasn’t horrible but it was noticeable, but after awhile I got used to it, and it worked well to diffuse the light and I could work outside. His video seems that he may have been unhappy with his experience and wanted to urge people to not buy it but don’t let that stop you from buying a cheaper one to test if you like it or not. The one I purchase was a matte screen protector on Amazon that at the time was $10ish for a pack of two.
I agree. I made recent videos talking about $10 screen protectors on amazon that are cheaper and overall a better product. There are many 1 star amazon reviews that have had the same experiences in this video. So it is a common issue. I felt that most youtube videos on this product were not giving an honest review of the cons of this item for an artist perspective which is who the product is for.

Instead of paperlike, I like to use pentips. They’re silicone tips for over your Apple Pencil tip. This will both protect the tip and give more precision and texture :)
You realize you can replace the tips? Therefore you’re not “destroying your Apple Pencil”…. On top of that you have to be writing/drawing like a maniac to get it down to the metal…. This is why RUclips needs to bring back the dislike counter

i believe saying it destroys your pencil is total nonsense... it just wears down the tip and that is completely normal, it is how friction works, you cannot have a matte screen protector without it wearing out your pen and itself at some point.
It is like saying the Wacom tablet is destroying by Wacom pencil and now both are worn down. it is the same principle. Like, my man, that is how friction works, and even on a flat surface the tip still wears down... indeed much slower, but it still does. that is why they sell new tips separately.
And yes you can look to prove your own points, but how about falsifying them? how about you not show a screen protector cut with a razor (because if those are the marks your pen left, your ipad would have been long gone by now), and how about u not show the screen protector in the sun at the most awkward angle no one will ever use.
In the end it all sums up to your expectations about the product, you cannot have friction without damage and even if the screen protector was made of glass with an abrasive surface so it would appear matte, it would still wear down itself and the tip. And if you don t want that, don t get it and by any means don t spread such bad rumors about it.
i have been using it myself for a year now and i had to change both the tip and the screen protector, because they were worn out. But fun fact, that is also mentioned on the official site, that it lasts for roughly 1 year. If you are not willing to spend money on that, then don t do it but don t lie about it.
also, ps. you can clean it with a wet wipe any time if it gets dirty.
Very helpful! Like many others I was debating getting paperlike when I upgrade. I have tempered glass on my current ipad and honestly I don't have any issue drawing with it. And it protects my screen and no damage to my pencil. So I think I have a clear choice now LMAO

Ive had them all for around 6-7 months and ive had the same tip since i first got all of them. Ive very heavy handed, digital or non digital art. My screen still looks good. Although he made some good points about glare, dullness of the colors when drawing, and a few other things. But when he spoke about how scratched the screen protector was after using it a lot, i just couldn’t listen anymore. That’s going to happen to almost any screen protector on any device but it’s simply doing it’s job: protecting your screen.
Like my sister said once when she used my iPad for drawing something “why spend 500$ on an iPad and pencil for drawing and note taking and not try to get used to the more slippery surface instead of buying a screen protector that makes it feel like paper when you can use regular paper instead” I agree I don’t have paperlike and I don’t need it. I got used to the iPad by 2 months of having it and I’ve realized that sometimes my writing even looks better on the iPad screen
Honestly, i may be in a very small minority of artists here, but when i buy a protector for my drawing tablet, i ALWAYS go for a pure glass protector.
I don't like the feel of drawing on paper, It is awesome, ON ACTUAL PAPER, but on a tablet, the constant scratching and vibrations i hear even through my headphones make me feel like i'm doing something wrong, maybe i'm pushing too hard, or something, and that i may end up breaking something.
But when i move to a glass protector.... MAAAN, i feel alive! not only are the colors much nicer and more vibrant, but also i can swing my pencil away in any way i want, with as much pressure as i want, i'm not debating on my glass protector's durability, cause it is glass, it won't scratch.:D
To me, these things are much more important than possibility of some glare.
I purchased a $10 matte protector when I got my iPad Pro a while back (came with 2). A buddy of mine who is an animator at Cartoon Network recommended it to me. feels just like paper and to be honest, any matte protector will give you that feel of resistance. I've had it for 3 years now and still looks like new. I think paying almost $40 for a sheet of plastic is beyond me.

I recently got an iPad Pro but before that I had a standard iPad with the first-gen Apple Pencil. I used the Pencil for THREE YEARS and still has no damage whatsoever to the tip. The fact that a “premium” protector requires you to replace tips (and the protector itself mind you) constantly is absolutely farcical and a huge waste of money.
But he's talking about 2 years. It's a long time, not like every damn month. And it doesn't happen with most users.
I used the first gen apple pencil on a normal ipad 9, with no screen protector, for a few months and the tip still got damaged. I now use an ipad pro with a paper feel screen protector and theres been no damage to the tip so far. It really just depends on how much pressure you use + how often you use it
Well, you don’t buy a Paperlike to protect your screen. You buy it to get a, well, paper-like drawing experience. Which will of course wear down your pencil tips faster than smooth glass. That’s a drawback most people who want a paper-like drawing experience are willing to accept.
The paperlike shipping price to my country was the same amount as the screen protector itself (way too expensive, and that’s before the tax that I would get charged when it arrived) so I decided not to get it and opted for glass. I use my iPad for note taking, not art and I love the glass screen protector. It works perfectly fine and I saw the drawbacks of using a matte screen protector especially the loss in quality when I was doing research about what protector to buy. I wanted to use my M1 iPad as a media consumption device which is why I opted for glass.
Paperlike call it a screen protector, but if that is the reason you buy it, you won’t be happy with it. The only reason to buy it is if you seek more friction for your pen.
I’ve had a paper like screen protector on my iPad Air for the last two years and that same Apple Pencil tip still looks like new. Like how hard are you pressing?
I’m a math teacher and use my iPad all the time to teach. I love PaperLike, but I hate that the Apple Pencil wears down the screen protector so fast as well as the tip itself. It lasts about 3 months of teaching before I have to replace both. I’m looking into the new resistant tips available nowadays.
As an alternative to Paperlike, the Spigen Paper Touch Pro Glass is much more durable and doubles up as a screen protector alongside a matte finish for ease of drawing. it’s probably the best for an artist or someone who wants to take notes, but not so much for anyone who just wants protection for their iPad. great video, though. i was about to grab a Paperlike protector for a friend but decided i was just gonna get them the Spigen one after this vid. thanks a ton!
I'm new to drawing on an iPad, and was totally frustrated by my inability to control the marks I was making due to the Apple pencil was sliding all over the place on the glass surface. I just got an Icarez screen protector and it has transformed my drawings. I'm not having to delete my linework repeatedly. I'm using Procreate and Fresco for my surface pattern design business. I'll gladly spend the few extra $ for tip replacements just to increase my drawing productivity and reduce my frustration levels. My time is more valuable than wasting it redoing my drawings. The cost of the paper like screen protector and replacement nibs is way below the cost associated with reduced productivity.
Yeah, I tried Paperlike. The advertising is voracious, and the product fails to live up to the hype. It was even too opaque for my needs compared with other, less expensive, products.

1. I had paperlike on my iPad Pro for a couple years, and never had a problem. I then changed my Paperlike when they came out with the updated version, had it two more year, no problem. I use my Apple Pencil A LOT. And the only time i ever had to change the tip… yes, you can buy extra tips because they can wear out or break… was when I tripped the pencil and it his a hard floor smack on the tip and broke it. So I’m wondering… how hard are you pressing when you write and draw?

He’s exaggerating for likes. There’s no way an Apple Pencil nib made those scratches. I’ve had paperlike for two years and don’t even have light scratches on the screen. With or without the protector, the ni s will need replacement. They wear down.

When I first got my current iPad I looked for options to make the screen and the pencil tip last longer while I could also have enough control. This might be a little exaggerated for some of you, but the truth is that Apple is not really affordable in Mexico, so take this just as my experience.
I have a sort of trauma with protecting the screens of my devices as soon as I get them, so the first thing I got was a tempered glass protector (around $100.00MXN).
The friction of the pencil and the screen was non-existent, so I couldn’t write properly and thought of getting a simple matte protector ($72.04MXN). When I was purchasing it I also decided to buy pen tips ($43.48, pack of 8 multiple colors) to see which option was better for me.
At the end I realized the glare on the screen was annoying and kept the matte protector on for that, but the sound the pencil made when it touched the screen was so annoying (and made me feel like my tip was going to burn down in no time) that I decided to put on the pen tip. At first it was so much friction that I couldn’t use it properly the first 2 days, but then I got used to the friction and it has been the best combo ever.
I’m someone who puts a lot of pressure on the paper when I write, so this somehow allowed me to control that pressure while keeping safe both my screen and pencil. I haven’t had the need to replace the matte protector and I’m still on my second pen tip after almost 1 year.
In total I spent a portion of the products from brands like Paperlike and got perfect results, so I can tell you that even Aliexpress products work just fine and you can save up a lot of money while you protect both your screen and pencil, you just need to find the right combo.
P.S. I bought mine at Shopee, not Aliexpress.
P.S. 2. I think Paperlike is overrated and I actually was concerned of getting my Apple Pencil wearing down easily with a matte protector. I’m so glad I actually took precautions.
I’m not really and artists but I use my Apple Pencil a lot for notes. I have never used Paperlike because I don’t like matte screen protectors. Instead I use a glass screen protector, because I worry about dropping it or something, along with silicone nibs to put on the tip of my Apple Pencil. It gives me the traction of a matte screen protector while both protecting my pencil and not impacting the look of my screen at all. It honestly works great for me for anything I need to use my iPad for.
Thanks for calling out this issue. I bought an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil for my daughter's art. When I compare a 4 pack of new tips for $15 once a year to the cost of new physical paper art notebooks, pens, pencils, and other art supplies... it's a no brainer. New tips once a year it is!
The ipad has literally already paid for itself just based on the paper I've been able to avoid buying.

As a traditional artist making the switch to digital art, I really enjoy paper like but I go through nibs pretty fast. My Apple Pencil is fine though, the nibs just wear down. I go through about 1 per month as I use it roughly 8-12 hrs a day for both my day job and art. It’s not something I mind as I have replaced my sketchbook, many notebooks and supplies so the money I would normally spend on art supplies, I spend on nibs and screen protectors and still save a good amount of money. Considering it’s way too hot to draw outside in texas about 65-70% of the year, I’m ok with a dull screen. I haven’t had any issues using it in public places with bright lighting as long as I don’t have the screen laying too flat. I will usually pull the artwork into illustrator on my MacBook to see the true colors and tweak anything if necessary. Hope that helps if any beginners are considering using paper like or a cheaper alternative! I think it’s worth it for digital asset beginners that are used to drawing on texture!!
I've been drawing traditionally for ten years. only this year, was I able to afford an older ipad gen. it is my baby, my sunshine, you get it. truly, it is much easier to draw and color with it, than with the mouse.
now, this screen protector was recommended to me by someone, but since we don't have it in local shops, I ended up getting a basic one.
this was my luck.
but sadly I really press the pencil on the screen (did the same on paper back then) so I'm afraid of possible damages still.
I’ve never used paper like, but I’ve been using a similar paper textured protector for 2 years now and it doesn’t wear my Apple Pencil that much after a year of use. And it definitely does sound like regular paper as well, as the sounds are not as scratchy as a paper like protector.
It literally did it to me too! I had to change the tips 3-4 times since I bought the paperlike screen protector. I haven't changed it once since I took it off the ipad.
I have a matte screen protector and I use it here and there and a lot sometimes, I don't think its paperlike but it's worked great for me, no cuts, marks, or wearing down on the pencil

Finally someone talks about this kind of screen protectors. Sad to see even now, little to no one dares to express their true thoughts about it. I hate textured screen protectors because they wear off my pens and I can't afford replacing them so often. Glossy screen is superior by far
it was pretty clear from the beginning that a matte screen protector regardless if it is paperlike or any other will wear down the pencil. the matte texture simply is like that so im not really surprised

I used to have a paperlike that was gifted to me and it was so weird, before that I had a regular glass screen protector and I could draw just fine but with paperlike I had to press harder with my pencil definitely not worth the $40
Then I bought a matte screen protector for $8 and it worked waaay better than the paperlike one it detected my Apple Pencil just fine without the need to press harder
This video doesn’t seem to really present a problem. I have both and my experience with the paperlike screen protector doesn’t really impair the screens color range. The glair from a naked iPad screen and smudges on said naked screen is much worse. And yes, if you press hard with the pencil on the screen, you will damage the screen screen protector or no screen protector.
The quick wear down and noticeable marking on the screen protector are big problems. I've tested alternative screen protectors and these problems are minimal in comparison.
Brands like Tech Armor have a much better texture, quality, and show no marks after 1 week like Paperlike did. Bellemond actually feels like paper much more then Paperlike aswell. I was a fan of Paperlike at first but the negatives for the $40 price are not really worth it.

Yep! I can confirm. I had a pencil for 3+ years without this type of screen protector. No significant wear on the tip. Got a new iPad and new pencil and used it for a year with a textured screen protector and saw metal. In fact, it was only 5 days ago that I replaced the tip. BUT, that’s the thing: I got 6 good tips for only $6. So who cares? Didn’t ruin the pencil, just wore out the tip.

You do realise you're meant to replace the Apple Pencil tip every 4 to 6 months. I have a Paperlike screen protector on my iPad Pro and it hasn't destroyed anything. The thing that breaks the most is my iPad Pro itself bending.
It's normal that it start to damage the pin from an apple pencil when it's used daily, it happens also to the pen of graphics tables, at some time you have to change that tip
I've been using a regular matte screen protector on my iPad for 2 years and my Apple Pencil tip hasn't worn down yet, and I've been using it for note taking.
The price on the tips are just outrageous! This is why I just put supper glue on the tip, add baking soda, repeat until there’s a lump and file it down to a point with a nail file. It lasts me 5-6 months. I wish more people would know this trick😭
Seriously? They are only 15USD/30AUD for 4. And wont damage your screen like glue/baking soda. But you do you.
Legit. Keep it real. My issue wasn’t with my tips from the Apple Pencil, it was with the lasting marks on the screen pro. I don’t see the prob with $15 a year or so for new tips. Heck I probably break or bend my tips more often than wearing it down. But damn the paper like was soooo over rated. Glad you made this vid.

i used on a galaxy tab s7+ the pens they have are rubber su rub off after like a month and you need order them all the time its even wors then on ipad soo now i got ipad pro 11 2021 and for sure i wont buy paperlike not worth it
No matter the screen protector you use, you have to change your Apple Pencil tip at some point. It also depends on how hard you’re pressing. Yes you’re going to get marks on any iPad screen protector.

I use a different brand of matte screen protector. It doesn't "destroy" the apple pencil. It just wears down the replaceable tip. I tried out the iPad pro without the screen protector and couldn't stand the feel of the pencil tip on the glass surface. For the streaks, I wipe down the screen protector with a microfiber cloth. The marks all come off. I've been using the same screen protector for the last 2 years of daily use. It's not destroyed
I've been using Paperlike for 2 years to draw and I've no issues with anything you just said. Sure, there's a minor scratch on one side but no biggie. My Apple Pencil tip is still alive and the screen is still fine to draw and watch videos.

Replace the tips soon as I get a bit worn down. Yup your gonna lose some sharpness in the display but I’m fine with that for the drawing purposes. But there’s no way I would let my Apple Pencil OR the paperlike get this destroyed as bad as yours looked how could you get clean lines with huge trenches!? I kinda feel like this is a Bit overdone of a hate review. It’s not a glass protector so it will need to be replaced that’s why they give you 2. And you keep saying it’s destroying the “Apple pencil” but it’s only effecting the replaceable tip. I definitely appreciate the time you took and the unpopular opinion. Great job on that. But like I said I feel like your avoiding the fact that the pencil tips and the protector will not last forever. That’s “the take” and give part of getting the paperlike feel over the slippery glass. And for someone that goes back and forth with iPad and paper on a daily basis I need someone Like paperlike so I can easily go from sketch to spray and to the wall. But respect to you and you’re channel my friend.
I guess I don’t see the difference between replacing a nib from replacing actual pencils or pens from using them on paper🤷🏻♀️
The difference is that an electronic pencil costs way more to replace the your average pencil or pen.
Thanks for this review! I felt exactly the same as you when first looking into paperlike- it was recommended everywhere and I felt like I needed it. I just didnt like that it reduced the quality of the iPad after we spent so much money to just see these colors.

I’ve had paperlike (2.0) since not long after it came out. I’ve never worn through a pencil; I use it primarily and heavily for note taking at work (uni before that). I’d say I’m a medium user - I’m not incentivised to use super heavy pressure like some artists might be. I’ve never gotten scratches like yours (I have a case that folds over the screen, possibly helping). I replaced the screen protector once with the included backup after a couple years because the edges were coming up due to the case pushing in over the edge. As mentioned, i’ve never had to replace a nib, though to be fair for the first year or so I used a Pentip silicon nib cover (it fell off and I decided I liked the scritchy scritch noise more than the softer taps now that I wasn’t in lecture theatres).
In terms of marks from fingers, the thumb spots do become slightly less matte over time, being a little more transparent. The resistance in these areas on the pencil also dropped slightly, but I far preferred this barely noticeable, gradual texture to the rare but intolerable nib-on-glass experience of going over a mildly oily area and sliding out, or picking up a bit of dust and carrying it around. I’d be surprised to find a matte protector that does less damage to the nib than paperlike 2.0, given the smooth flat surface of its textured bumps, and I preferred the slightly blown out light versus full glare reflection.
That being said, my iPad of 4.5 years started to die and so I have upgraded and currently I’m going bare glass with no intent to get paperlike again. I’ve gotten to the point in transitioning to pen on matte as a mid ground that the use of pen on glass isn’t that bad, and if I want a matte I might be more tempted by the removable ones like Pen Mat, just to spare the risk of bubbles and to have the full glory of the screen when I want it.

I feel like part of the wear on the paperlike is due to the fact that the Apple Pencil was stripped to the metal before the tip was replaced, and I feel like paying $7-$15 every 2 years isn’t an issue if you can afford a 13 inch M1 iPad Pro. I do agree that the brightness and color accuracy being kinda killed is an issue though. I feel like the wear issue is mostly due to not replacing Apple Pencil tips when needed though.
I don’t see the problem with replacing an $8 pencil tip. I hear paper like gets glossy quickly however. That and the diffusion prevents me from getting it.

I think that no matter what matt screen protector one should use, it will always wear down the pencil, since it will generate more friction that a smooth glass screen. Even if a nib only lasts for six months, a pack of four is still only 14 dollars for two years, which I would say is a pretty good deal.
I have had the paperlike on my iPad for 3 years now. I am not an artist. I use it every day nearly for work notes. I have not had to buy a new tip for my Apple Pencil or a new screen protector. I really do not understand how you think note taking is causing this. I absolutely hated the feel of glass on plastic. While it isn’t exactly like pen and paper it is much closer.
I personally use paperfeel, it’s more than half the price and I don’t feel terrible about my tips cause they’re only like $10 usd on amazon and they last a whole year for me. I’m not a pro at all and I don’t use it daily so I’m ok with it. I honestly do like the matte screen over the glass, and I have the ipad air so I don’t feel too bad about the tips 😅
paperlike doesn't destroy the $100 apple pencil... 😃 it destroys the $3 pencil tip lmao. i'm already having fun getting knock off colored tips. anyone with a wacom or other drawing tablets already know rubbing plastic on a textured surface is a destructive process that will have you replacing tips it's like being suprised your shows wear down when walking on hard concrete, this stuff happens.
anyways, 2 other options to try, the magnetic removable paper like screen covers, or the soft plastic drawing tip covers , has nice resistance. or use both at the same time
every single matte screen protector is going to wear down the nib at different rates depending on how much pressure you use when drawing. it’s just how it is, if you’ve ever used a regular drawing tablet like wacom intuos you know it’ll come with like 5 extra nibs because that is EXPECTED. the TRUE question is why a $1000 product comes in such shitty quality that some people report being ruined in 2 months using a regular matte screen protector. it’s surreal.
Using the paper like screen protector after only 5 weeks I had to get new tips for my apple pencil and another thing the iPad has pressure sensitivity so when I went harder it made the process faster of buying new tips for my apple pencil
I mean, matte screen protector to enhance drag and feel like paper is what “paperlike” is about, you can’t just say “Oh this screen protector destroyed my pencil” because it will wear even without that.
Which also seems exaggerated to say “destroy”, if it destroys it then no one would do such thing, it just wears it somewhat faster depending on your daily use but it doesn’t even damage the pen itself, just wears the tip.
Wear is a given, the matte SP has that texture to give that feeling when dragging the pencil on the screen and WILL increase the wear of the pen tip because of the same fact, is a tradeoff along with a diffused brightness and colors because it’s either one or the other.
Replacing nibs is not even that expensive when you are looking for the quality and cost of the device itself.
This feels like someone giving a bad review to a skateboard brand in specific because their shoes got worn down because of it (skateboards will wear them down faster because of the friction of the rougher surface and other variables)
Which imo feels like an obvious dumb review because it’s just pointing the obvious, nonetheless is a good quality video.
I use cheap matte screen protector and for now..havent seen any scratch and any wear on the tip…and no glare too..

I think the negatives named in this video are unavoidable for this kind of product. If you want more friction for your pencil, it will wear down the tip. If you want a rougher surface, the screen won‘t be as crystal clear.

OK, this this is completely right.
I have used my iPad with a pencil for a long time with both mate screen protector and without it, and I used my iPad for gaming too. Mate screen protector looks good in the beginning but after some time it completely annoys use because you can’t game properly on it, because it degrades quickly over time and because it distorts image colour and clarity significantly.
Remember that your devices were designed to be used without screen protectors. And without case.
So if you don’t drop your device frequently (I have dropped my phone only once, when my leg slipped on ice) and have at least some confidence in your person - don’t use cases and screen protectors, especially the mate film like Paperlike.
And yes, drawing with Apple Pencil on a glass is better.
I use Spigen's Paper Touch instead of Paperlike. It honestly depends on the usage of your ipad. I use mine mainly for note-taking, and I hate using apple pencil on a smooth glass surface, so I bought one that imitates the texture of a paper and it's been serving me well.
Yes, generally matte screen protector like this will reduce the "quality" of your ipad screen to some degree (compared to glass screen) but it's not that bad tbh. Necessary trade off imo because I wanted to have that natural paper feel. I don't mind replacing my Apple Pencil tip every 6 months either.
Tho I'd suggest everyone else not to buy Paperlike and go for cheaper/better alternatives. It's overhyped, durability sucks, and a bit too pricy.

Using any screen protector with texture is going to wear down the tip of your Apple Pencil.
Even just using Apple Pencil without any add ons it will wear out…thats why apple include additional tip for the pencil

I’m scared to try again with any paper like or any other knockoffs anymore. I bought a few knockoffs and subsequently ruined 2 apple pencils. I haven’t confirmed that the issues my pencils had were directly related to the screen protector, but the damage to the nibs definitely were.
