I feel like the Emperor did this on purpose to anger Vader, to get him to rebel, because the Emperor once said; the Sith are born in defiance
I always had the impression Palpatine did it just to be a jerk to Vader for its own sake. Then again, you may well be right, it certainly is possible knowing the Sith in general. Palpatine and Vader are hardly the only Sith master-student pair with a very antagonistic, tense relationship to put it mildly.
After New Hope Palpatine was pissed and he was venting on Vader but here it's probably a combination of being jerk, but also testing Vader. Palpatine felt that Vader post-Mustafar never exactly lived up to who he could really become so maybe he was trying to "motivate" him.

Tarkin is just busy demoting everyone lately. I bet soon there will be a story about how Tarkin is going to demote Palpatine back into Sheev.

It's quite interesting, after all both of them even in the books they looks each other with respect and treat some quite in good terms
It's a major inconsistency in their relationship, but that's because this issue was written by Chuck Wendig, a piece of slime who is notorious for contradicting preexisting lore. He used this entire comic as a poor attempt to trample established canon from both the Tarkin and Catalyst novels.

I would have killed Tarkin where he was standing, then the death troopers, in front of Palpatine. Then apologized for allowing my anger to control my emotions. To which Palpatine would have smiled, and then told me to go find Tarkin's replacement, and deal with the issue he had instructed him to deal with.
Or I would have made Tarkin's life absolute hell, finding new ways to undermine him, letting him do all the work. And then killing him after The Emperor told me to escort him to the brig for his failure. And apologizing to Palpatine for allowing my anger to control my emotions. Which would have pleased him.

I always imagined the respect between Tarkin and Vader to have been hard earned and sincere. What one could show in prowess and sheer will in the Force, the other could show with his devious mind and willingness to go to the bitter ends of horror to accomplish the Empire's supremacy. It shall remain so in my head canon. I have spoken.

It's important to note this annual is often hand-waved due to the inconsistencies it creates with Catalyst, as well as Vader and Tarkin's preexisting relationship from the comics and Tarkin novel. The author of this abomination is Chuck Wendig, a trough-feeding swine who was officially dismissed from writing any future stories for Lucasfilm. So whatever intentions he had with this work will likely remain unresolved.

I've always hated this antagonistic relationship they keep forcing between Vader and Tarkin. It's not what we saw in the movie. They clearly had a respect and camaraderie between them, like people who have been working together a long time often do. The only thing these stories do is make Vader seem even more pathetic than the Prequels did.

I’m pretty sure Tarkin only had control over Vader in Death Star related projects. Other than that, Vader was second in command.

A few people here have been talking about how it made more sense for Tarkin an Vader to have a respectful relationship and I agree with this. One of my biggest problems with Vader, specifically in disney's writing, was that he just seemed like a mindless beast that wanted to kill everyone for even the slightest reasons. Thus, it's impossible for him to have any allies in the empire because he'll just kill them for even the most minor reasons. I much prefer the idea of him as a cold hearted yet logical character. If he thinks you're incompetent he'll kill you on the spot, but he's rational and has respect for those who have proven their worth.

Honestly if tarken was killed by Vader perhaps the civil war would have ended differently. Instead of wasting resources on the Death Star perhaps the resources would be invested into a Star fighter better at dealing with rebels

This comic takes the relationship between Vader and Tarkin into something it shouldn't. In Clone Wars, Anakin and then Captain Tarkin got along quite well. Anikan admired Tarkin's leadership and even agreed that green Jedi shouldn't lead veteran soldiers. I don't see any reason why that relationship would change after he became Vader. As it was shown in A New Hope, Vader didn't argue with Tarkin or show any anger towards him.
I agree. It made Tarkin look petty, but the main arc was to show that Vader set events which lead to Erso's treason and the destruction of DS1. It could've been more subtle; a longer series of events based on Vaders respect, but lack of trust in Tarkin. Including Palpatine, they were a triumvirate of alpha killers, and it should be portrayed as a civil agreement in Mexican standoff sort of way.
