how precise do the cut measurements need to be? alot of these presidential/armourshake installs end up showing a diagonal pattern. is there a way to avoid that by doing more of a "staggered" pattern?

My brother in-law did a 10 on 12 pitch roof a lot of hips and valleys with these type of shingles, the home owner was very pleased the way it looked.
