I know nothing from piano but I remember hearing a Schimmel thirty years ago and thought it was much more beautiful than any other piano I heard before. The tone is for my ears light, sweet and rounded and resonating but not in a way that clarity gets lost. It could be though that it projects less well (because of this ? ) above orchestra's.

Actually Bechstein became the biggest German manufacturer some years ago. And Schimmel - though definitly not bad - always was considered rather mid-tier. Most school upright pianos were Schimmels because they came at a decent price. They certainly do not have the same reputation as Steinway Hamburg, C. Bechstein or Blüthner.
Absolutely not bad, but usually not the first piano one would like to buy. But to be fair: In the quality level we are talking about, no hand built piano is like the other and if you get a good Schimmel, you have a very fine instrument. A good technician could turn it into a great instrument.

I've watched recently made videos of the factory processes of C. Bechstein, Mason and Hamlin and Fazioli. A lot of the manufacturing is hand-built but not all of it. They are more and more relying on CNC machines to do some processes. And there is hand-work in factories for"production" pianos. For example, for Hailun, the belly of the piano is hand-chiseled and sanded. The factory videos are quite informing because you get to see at least what they present of how they are made. I have no problem at all with the higher-end pianos using CNC machines for some processes. They're absolutely more precise than hand-work. And some of the hand work is checked by laser-guided machines and computers, anyway.
I found variety in pianos of all rungs, not only (mostly) hand built ones. I agree a good technician can turn a piano into a great one, and people have different preferences on how they want their pianos voiced and sometimes regulated.

Maybe years ago it was. But I think that Schimmel (the high ranges) has improved many aspects to be at the height of the mentioned legendary pianos.

Robert, I wouldn't classify Bosendorfer as having a "bell like" tone. They've always had a tone quite distinct from the Steinway standard and with the new VC cabinet, they are quite far away from Steinway. They're unique. Except for Yamaha that owns them, which now uses so much of Bosendorfer standards in their high-end grands, they share some Bosendorfer tone characteristics.
Schimmel is a fine piano, but was always thought of as in a lower tier than the high-line European pianos. Still, some sound quite wonderful.

I thought Steinway was #1? If I recall correctly, Steinway has a factory in Germany? That said, Schimmel is amazing, I've had the pleasure of trying multiple Schimmel pianos, from upright to concert grand.

ralph wang Steinway is German. But there are 2 different steinways. Steinway Hamburg(german, original)and Steinway New York(obviously not german and not the original one)

Steinway is actually an American company with factories in New York and Hamburg, Germany. Schimmel is the #1 producer of pianos in Germany by number of pianos produced.

True, it was started by a German immigrant, Heinrich Steinweg, who brought German know-how to piano building in the USA.

Steinways SUCKS when compared to a Schimmel. These are exceptionally well-made pianos for those with discriminating tastes that demand outstanding quality and sound. Anyone who thinks a Steinway even comes CLOSE to a Schimmel doesn't know their ass from a hole in the ground.
