Although we are finally ready to move our historic trawler, it is still a long way to go before we are done with the refit project.
Our steel ship still needs some structural repairs, has no running water or electricity and no interior at the moment.
However, the first step is done. We can finally untie the lines and move to another harbor.
And we really enjoyed the first journey on Flying Coney!
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

Nice to see her alive and rolling along!
Being part of a ships crew and arriving in new port is such a special experience! Difficult to express in words, but this video comes close! Excellent work of the crew and a really good skipper! I'll sail with you guys any day!
Its a great accomplishment to get Flying Coney out in the open water and motoring safely at speed. Great vide 2x👍
Brings back memories. We chartered a traditional Zeeuse Schouw from Heech by de Mar in Heeg and wandered around Friesland. We moored in the marina on the Sylroede west of the town and enjoyed good food and drink in Lemmer. Good fun.
Sounds like a lovely journey of yours. For us it was the first time really arriving to a new town while underway and it really was special.
Very nice to see Flying Coney on the move, May the ocean waves be kind, Enjoy the ride, Cheers from New Zealand.
Also brings back memories..helped convert a fishing trawler from Sweden to a sailboat named Alta in Portsmith N.H. in the 80s
Hi Guys, nice to see flying coney sail. the issue with the cooling water might be caused by air in the system. the air bubble can be caught when there has been given a reverse . likely when you entered the dock and gave reverse. that often happens when the ship is high in the water when not loaded. you can check this by trying in open water where there is room enough. it depends also where the cool water inlet is . good luck and safe sails.
We do have a closed cooling system and keel cooling. I think your advice is for a seawater cooled system.
Very enjoyable to see Flying Coney navigating.
Superb Vid, really enjoyed this, seeing her moving, and docking , and the boats around her and little of the surrounding area, helps understand what is going on a little easier, stay safe
Off to a new home for more fun In the saga of Flying Coney .I'm happy the crossing was uneventful .And 8 plus knots very respectable
Really, really neat to see you guys back again, well done, hope you had a nice wee break. Also, thank you for the map showing where you are going, really helps us follow your journey. I can’t wait for you to get into port again and commence FC restoration, she will almost be as good looking as Daniel. Take care, safe journey and see you next week
Good to see your on the move again .
It feels very good that the boat is in a state where we don't have to worry while on the move. John did a great job with the engine and we're gaining trust in the hull. But it will be a long way until we're done.
Don't rush ! We all will be watching.
Lovely video thank you 😊😊
A camera in the engine room with a monitor at the helm could be useful. The YT channel Project Brupeg comes to mind.
Really enjoy watching your refit and bring the old girl back to life. Soon you will be living everyone’s dream sailing around the world dont ever giver up on your dreams……..
Hello
I Thank you for some great videos😊👌
Did you Say that your going to Denmark?
If you come to Copenhagen i would love to show you some of the city😊😂
Best regards
Thomas
Very good video thanks for port visuals. Fair seas.
Thanks for the great video. Keep the coming!
Thank you! Glad you've enjoyed the video!
Beautiful harbor ❤
So what as the distance of this sea trial? Perhaps a scale on the map to help us non-europeans make sense of the map?! Just a suggestion.
Also, re. your cooling problem at the start, check your thermostats, and have some spare ones on hand. They can fail easily (I know!).
The distance in between Lelystad and Lemmer is about 30 nautical miles. At the moment we are overly cautious and keep a close eye on our systems. For us the ice cold return line from the keel cooling was a bit unusual. But it's possible that it's always like that. With the smoke detector going off it was a high stress situation but that was also only because a bit of oil and dirt fumed a little bit and we had the engine room doors closed for the first time since we had the smoke detector. So overall nothing to worry about.
Bon voyage and smooth sailing!
great video with great music ❤
good vid on channel keep up the good vid you do
great video saludos
Thank you very much for watching! ⛵️
You do it very good Daniel you got more en more control over the boat👍👍
Always enjoy your videos, can't wait to see what is next project is going to be. 😎👍
There are so many interesting things coming up. We're making huge progress on Flying Coney. We film everything and will share it all, that's for sure!
Is it possible to fit a sail to the existing rigging? As you show at 10:10. Or better yet, a sail forward as well? I'll suggest that it would be an enhancement to your YT content. Managing just one sail imparts the sense that one day Flying Coney will be a sailing ship. Plus it gives a sense of what goes on when you are sailing. I'm certain there are many people in the community who have never sailed.
My suggestion is to design it in such a way that it can be used on the eventual full rigging - so there is no waste. Secondly, any propulsion you do get from the modest sail means less diesel consumed, correct? So that's my suggestion for this episode. So happy to see you underway.
We do have four sails for the existing rigging. At least two jibs and a gaff sail. However if we do want to use the existing rigging we would need to exchange all ropes, many blocks and also parts of the standing rigging. For an improvised motorsailer rig that's too much money and too much work. Just last week the gaff was crashing down when we hoisted the dinghy back on deck. I think that was a warning shot. So we're thinking of going one step backwards and get rid of the rig. That way Flying Coney will look at least like a nice trawler yacht and not like an odd motorsailer. BUT we will add masts as soon as possible. We will start with a fore and aft rig and will add square sails later on. The goal is to rig her as a schooner brig.
@@FlyingConey Ah - too bad the existing rigging is not unstable. Thank you for explaining the circumstances. I can agree with your thinking about going one step backward. One less variable, one less possibility of sudden failure and everything that goes along with a failure of that sort and a reduction of her gross weight. I don't see any downside to that route. Thanks for the information! :)
This subject may make interesting YT content.
Thank you for another excellent video.
So nice! Thank you!
And comment, great job
Thanks for the comment!
Very enjoyable video, thank you for sharing.
5:45” There is something very odd in those GPS coordinates… 1- date is 20 years old? 2- Maybe that’s why looks like you are ‘driving’ a tractor in the middle of a corn field, instead of steering Flying Coney on IJsselmeer…? Maybe you are using different datum than WGS84? 🤔
It's always interesting how much viewers like you pay attention to the very little details. We noticed the wrong datum while editing the video. It must have reset itself to factory setting because we always disconnect the batteries when we don't need them.
Thank you for taking time to answer. Keep it up and cheers!!!
@@FlyingConey Actually the GPS signal does not contain the full year, and the date information wraps around every 20 years or so (1024 weeks to be precise). Modern GPS receivers translate this into the correct date, but this very old model (a Furuno GP-30 if I'm not mistaken) cannot do that. Time and position information is still totally fine.
😃😃😃
Thanks for another interesting episode, but please slow down the rolling credits that list your patrons. I'd be a little disappointed if I were donating, and my name flew by so quickly that I couldn't read it! ❤
Thank you for feedback. Initially we only mentioned higher Patron levels in the video credits and that's part of their Patreon benefits. These are the "Officers" at the beginning of the credits. But since we're grateful for every Patron we have we also mention the entry level Patrons in every video. But we see that as an additional benefit for them and the readability depends on how long the outro is.
Thinking about how fast flying coney is and what it takes to clean her bottom. Yikes.
A very cool video thanks for sharing. I’m learning German, so perhaps I’ll be able to see Flying Coney in person soon.
The language on board Flying Coney is English and your English seems perfect to me. Just let us know when you're in the area.
Great Video.. Are you going to add a Rhabarber Bar to flying Coney? It would literally be Barbara's Rhabarber Bar 😊
We're slightly concerned that this would attract Barbarians. We've volunteers, that's enough 🤣
Hi you were not that far from Mark of Wilding Sailing where he's rebuilding his 42' Wharram Tiki hard to imagine two more contrasting traditional style vessels.
Glad the cooling problem cleared. I know someone auto cooling systems are notorious for air locks.. and worst trapping air in the heads.😬 Hopefully it's a one off and has completely cleared. Well done all.
Two different projects indeed, but both have something in common: both ships are rotten and it costs more to renovate them as to buy a good second hand ship…
ratio of adds is getting to much!
We manually place an add about every 5min and that's far less than what RUclips would put in automatically. We do so since very much the beginning of the channel. Even though our add revenue is getting lower and lower even with more views. We personally pay for YT Premium because it's part of being a creator to watch other channels. But I can understand that RUclips has become difficult to watch and we're also noticing that it's far more difficult to grow on this platform.
I’m done as soon as you start with shrinks you paint yourselves as being not able to achieve goodbye
hello hope to see you next time nice to see you guys i liked the new video
I'm done... DON"T STAND THERE AND LIE ON BEHALF OF A SPONSOR....FO
We're using their service and are completely satisfied.
@@FlyingConey Obviously you need it.
Well I'm not the one accusing people I don't know of being liars! Or try to tell other people how they should do their job. If I don't like something I don't waste my time with it.
@@FlyingConey Stating a fact....you do it for money
Yes but we only promote products and services we believe in. We recently turned down a well paid sponsorship deal because it was against what we stand for. RUclips and Patreon doesn't bring us above minimum wage. So without sponsorship deals we would need to stop making videos.
