Viserys definitely knows the children are bastards, but he doesn’t care about that. He told Rhyaenra that the truth doesn’t matter, what matters is perception, how people see that truth, and by vehemently denying those accusations, he makes it so that no one dares to speak them out loud or they would be going against the king and get punished for treason. He’s protecting Rhaenyra

“The few times we lay together” that’s not enough when you consider what’s at stake. They’re both just used to getting their way because theyre nobility and so they gave it a half ass effort. The show has clearly made an effort to display that Rhaenyra is spoiled because she’s the only one of her parents children that lived and she’s a dragon rider so that gives her a lot of advantages. Alicent did not choose to be miserable. She literally has no choice. She marries who her father tells her to marry and she does what her husband tells her to do because she is dependent on both of them for economic and physical survival. She does not have the ability to just go and have an affair or have someone else father her children based on convenience and happiness

Viserys ignores that Rhaenera’s sons aren’t her husband’s because he’s sticking to his assertion that she be his heir; due to guilt of what he did to his own wife in episode 1. If Rhaenera can be discredited from the throne due to having no legitimate heirs, then that must be kept secret.
Alicent was always a pawn for her father and told how to act as a lady with no real choice in her fate. After seeing Rhaenera get everything she wanted, and not suffer consequences when she messed up, she became resentful and decided to take back her power through her own kids. Cristin and Alicent both hate Rhaenera due to her getting off scott free from her dalliances (and because she rejected Cole’s proposal).
Laenor and Rhaenera probably tried many times to conceive but he just couldn’t “get it up” well enough to finish the job. I think Laenor cares for the boys, but most of this is all for appearances and keeping on top of the rumors. Remember, they didn’t marry for love; they were betrothed by their parents and did the best they could under the circumstances.
Rhaenera does get a lot of passes for her unscrupulous behavior behind closed doors, but as the first woman heir in a patriarchal system, all eyes are watching her and waiting for any mistake she might make. To stay safe and gain the throne, she has to keep herself in good graces and feed an image to the realm of a competent and loving wife and mother (which she really is to her kids). She sees her marriage to Laenor as a contract to keep them both safe and in power and just doesn’t want that to be jeopardized.
It’s really interesting to watch the dynamics with the next generation of Targaryens too. Rhaenera’s kids having to wade thru the stigma of their mom and rumors of being bastards, as well as the weight of the throne in their line. Alicent’s kids with the knowledge that they won’t inherit their father’s throne and not being preferred by their father because of a promise he made before they were even born.

Y’all are way too hard on Rhanerya. Her and her husband went into an agreement that they can live their lives as such. She even allowed him to carry his boyfriend with them to Dragonstone. She tried to make amends with Alicent (who in my opinion is too concerned with who rhanerya is sleeping with)by marrying their kids together so they can gain nobility and be in line for being king/queen when she ascends the throne which was a more than generous offer. She’s a good mother to her kids. Alicent is just spitting venom to her kids mad that her son doesn’t want the throne but pushing him to want it. Which is power hungry and revengeful of her. Her and Ser Criston literally bonds over not liking Rhanerya. Viserys is a good father. He obviously knows they are bastard sons but he doesn’t want his daughter to be killed or his grand kids which is honorable. He’s already lost a bunch of kids due to miscarriages and still Borns and he lost his wife in the process. His brother isn’t around anymore. @@9709Nick No I don't think it was Otto. We have a scene where the younger maester proposes a different approach to healing Viserys and ge fet shut down by the old maester that the leechings always helped in the past. It was a nice way of showing how old methods don't always work and being closed minded can be bad.
We have that in real life as well, the attitude of "It was always done this way." And how that can clash with the younger generation.
Orwyle ( I think that's the younger maesters name ) proposed herbal treatment. Viserys has a Westerosi form of leprosy in the show. It's a slow growing bacteria and you need antibiotics to treat it. There are some herbs with some antibiotic qualities. So it makes complete sense why Orwyles treatment was better, but not strong enough in the end.
Leechings were used often in medieval medicine.
Fun fact: The "witches" that were burned by the church were mostly local herbal women and healers.
Sorry for nerding out. I was just happy that in the series the treatment made "sense". I honestly don't think it was Otto plotting.

I think the whole plot point is to show rhaenyra being thrust into a man's world and being the first female heir and having to be so much more careful because she's a woman (for example robert baratheon had heaps of bastards and no one even cared) . Alicent is the opposite. She was forced to play the woman's role and she'd been brainwashed by otto that her virtue and dignity is all she has. she feels anger and jealousy towards rhaenyra for being basically careless when it comes to her virtue and maidenhood yet still having all the opportunities a man would. alicent threw away her childhood to obtain the highest position you can possibly be as a woman, yet rheanyra's position is higher while not even trying.

Because Robert's bastards were not going to inherit anything. Rhaenyra's would get the throne; while also commiting line theft and stealing the Velaryon inheritence. This is why adultery was considered a crime for women and not for men. DNA tests obviously weren't a thing back then. Rhaenyra's carelessness resulted in her ruined reputation and Viserys forcing her to marry Laenor. Resulting in her spawning a brood of bastards and an inevitable war. Oh boy, this will definitely be the episode I have the most info to deliver.
    Wish me luck😅
First off, let's talk about the 10 year timeskip and what happened in between :
Starting with Daemon, after Rhaenyra's wedding he went to the Vale to ask Lady Jeyne Arryn for his inheritance of Runestone, but since nobody likes him there he was basically kicked out of the Vale and told never to return.
Afterwards he went to duel the son of the Sealord of Braavos for Laena's hand and after winning the duel he married her.
Corlys generally likes Daemon so he didn't oppose it.
Afterwards the couple would travel the cities of Essos until they arrive in Pentos, which is where they are in the episode.
Together they have two twin daughters, Baela and Rhaena.
Of the two tho, only Baela's egg hatched in her cradle and out of it came her beautiful dragon named Moondancer.
Moondancer is one of the youngest dragons in the story, it's still too small to ride.
    As for Laena.
We saw in episode two that she was curious about Vaghar and this episode she mentioned she tamed her when she was 15, so even prior to episode 5 timeline wise, becoming Vaghar's third rider and in possession of the currently biggest Targaryen dragon.
To explain how Viserys survived so long we have to look at his two maesters.
In the first 5 episodes Grandmaester Mellos was in charge of Viserys, with Maester Orwile serving under him, Mellos's treatments never seemed to work tho.
Maester Orwile suggested some other treatments but he was ignored.
During the timeskip Mellos died of old age and now Orwile is grandmaester and we see that Viserys got his infected arm amputated which probably slowed the progression of his disease.
As for Rhaenyra and Alicent, let's talk about their kids.
We already met Aegon and Healena prior to the timeskip as babies, but now Alicent has a third child, Aemond, and a fourth one I'm not gonna talk about because of spoilers for future seasons.
Just know that Viserys and Alicent have 4 kids, the youngest of which wasn't in this season despite being born during the timeskip between episode 5 and 6.
It's being confirmed that they will appear in the future seasons by the show runners tho, for now just know that they exist.
    Aegon and Healena have dragons.
Aegon's young dragon is named Sunfyre, which in the story is considered the most beautiful dragon.
There is a theory that the egg in episode 2 was Sunfyre himself but I don't know of any proof to validate it.
Healena's dragon is named Dreamfyre and she is her second rider.
Dreamfyre's first rider was Rhaena Targaryen, the older sister of Jaehaerys I, the old king.
Thus Dreamfyre is one of the oldest dragons in the show (besides Vaghar of course) and we actually see her in this episode as she was the dragon that scared Aemond in the dragonpit.
Another cool fact about Dreamfyre that was revealed to us in the source material is that she is all but confirmed to be the mother of the dragons we see in GOT, which is also why the show uses the same design for her as the ones for the dragons in GOT.
As we see in the episode, Aemond is the only one without a dragon.
As for Rhaenyra's three children with Harwin they are Jacaerys (Jace), Lucerys (Luke) and Joffrey.
Jace and Luke also have two young dragons.
Jace has Vermax, which we see in the episode, while Luke has a younger dragon named Arrax.
That's it for now, see you for the next episodes 👋
Episodes 7, 8 and 10 are by far my three favorites so I can't wait for the boys reaction.

Targaryen Dragon Lore: Vhagar (the large green dragon we saw Laena riding) is the oldest and largest of the living dragons. She was hatched during the Century of Blood (a time between the Doom of Valyria and Aegon's Conquest of Westeros). Her previous riders go as followed:
Queen Visenya Targaryen - Elder sister-wife of King Aegon I Targaryen (known as Aegon the Conqueror). Visenya with Vhagar, Aegon with Balerion, and Rhaenys with Meraxes conquered six of the seven kingdoms
**Queen Rhaenys Targaryen was the younger sister-wife of Aegon I Targaryen. It is said he married his older sister for duty, to secure his inheritance. And that he married his younger sister for love.
**Balerion is a legendary dragon known as the Black Dread. He was one of the five dragons brought by House Targaryen to Dragonstone when they fled Valyria prior to the Doom, and the only one of the five to live to the time of Aegon's Conquest.
Prince Baelon Targaryen - second son of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen and Queen Alysanne Targaryen. Father of King Viserys I Targaryen and Prince Daemon Targaryen. Believed to have died from a burst appendix (I think). His death led to the Council of 101 AC that named Viserys as Jaehaerys' heir over Rhaenys.
Lady Laena Velaryon - current rider. Daughter of Lord Corlys Velaryon and Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Second wife of Prince Daemon Targaryen. Older sister of Ser Laenor Velaryon.
More Targaryen Dragon Lore: the dragon that the young Prince Aemond encountered beneath the Dragon Pit was Dreamfyre. Game of Thrones fans will be more familiar with her look because it is the same used for Daenerys' dragons (it is believed that a clutch of three eggs that were stolen during the reign of King Jaehaerys I Targaryen were the ones gifted to Daenerys, and that these came from Dreamfyre).
Dreamfyre was hatched during the reign of Aegon I Targaryen. She was large enough to be mounted by 35 AC. Her riders are:
Queen Rhaena Targaryen - eldest daughter of King Aenys I Targaryen (son of King Aegon I Targaryen and Queen Rhaenys Targaryen) and Queen Alyssa Velaryon. Elder sister of King Jaehaerys and Queen Alysanne. (I won't get into the history of her marriages because that would be extremely long)
Princess Helaena Targaryen - Second daughter of King Viserys I Targaryen, only daughter of Queen Alicent Hightower. (I'm not sure if it is discussed in the show, but the histories say the princess bonded with the dragon during the reign of her father and that she was riding the dragon by age eleven)

I mean what other choice did rhaenyra have? She had to as the heir have her own heirs to secure her position or the court would whisper of her being barren. I would assume the process for rhaenyra and Laenor to bed one another would be extremely hard for them both. She’s not interested in him and he obviously isn’t interested in her and the whole situation is awkward and uncomfortable and in some way I bet traumatic. So if Laenor couldn’t give her children she would have to look elsewhere.

Not sure if someone said this isn’t he comments already. Sir Cristan Cole got away with murder only because he is a member of the Kingsguard (therefore of higher status/protection/authority than Joffrey) and Alicent protected him. So yes Kingsguard do have leeway to kill, they obviously aren’t supposed to murder people like that but they are the kings protectors and can do so in the name of the king and also obviously get away with killing people unjustly while others wouldn’t have gotten away with it

One thing some people don’t realise is that in the books, the Velaryons are Valyrian/White - of the same ethnicity as the Targaryens. They’re so interbred that they’re basically the same family.
Rhaenys Targaryen (Laenor and Laena’s mother) is half-Baratheon, and in the books has BLACK hair. Rhaenyra’s mother is also half Arryn, and while I don’t believe he’s described, it’s possible he had dark hair too.
Genetics in Westeros work differently than they do in our world, with some magic stuff going on, but in that book context, “their” kids having dark hair isn’t that completely out of the ordinary or as potentially scandalous as it is in the show with Rhaenys having white hair on screen and Corlys being black on screen. So it’s a different vibe of suspicion.

  • @eileenhinman1148
    @eileenhinman1148 5 месяцев назад +1

Apparently in the books, Princess Rhaenys was brunette due to her partial Baratheon blood, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for her grandkids to also have brown hair. Interesting choice for them to make it more glaring for the show - they probably figured it would confuse people for them all to not have the white hair

Not really. Many kids with one white parent and one black parent can turn out looking way more like one than the other, not every mixed child looks like a perfect inbetween. Genetics is really really weird like that. There was a girl on America's Next Top model years ago who was very pale and blonde, but who had an African American mother and a German dad, the host even called out how crazy it was and she would never have guessed. Its not like it ruins the immersion if you actually understand how plausible that is in reality, especially compared to the way more egregious issue that two silver haired parents should't have a brunette kid

It is a bit more ambiguous in Fire & Blood because Princess Rhaenys (Leanor's mother aka the Queen Who Never Was) is part Baratheon and has dark hair. And for those who know "the seed is strong." Having grandchildren with dark hair isn't an automatic red flag.
HOTD decides to make it more obvious that Rhaeyna's children are bastards to highlight how perception matters more than reality and what people will do to reinforce or combat that perception.

Rhaenyra is following her dad's words by securing her claim as now alicent is giving birth to True targaryens ( their looks make them true even tho they are mixed ) and yet again corlys once stated that History doesn't remember blood , it remember names and that's what rhaenyra meant when she was talking to jaecerys , it won't matter if he is a bastard or a legal high born , he is a targaryen by claim and a velaryon by name

As such, politically Criston is of a much higher rank than Harwin. As for how/why Criston got away with Killing Joffrey, the creater In Deep Geek has an excellent video on the topic that does not spoil any of the future stories in house of the dragon. Lyonel is the lord of one of the oldest and strongest houses in Westeros, whilst Otto is the second son, fit to inherit nothing he doesn’t claim for himself, to use the show’s language. Yes, Otto is reaching for power, but it’s understandable in a world like Westeros, where status and power mean everything.
