- Welcome to our Songs of the Year series. Today we're looking at 2015!
Every Friday we will each be choosing our favorite songs of a year, starting in 1958 and going all the way through 2021. We will be making five selections from the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Any song that broke the Hot 100 at any point during the year is eligible. After that we'll be making five more 'wildcard' selections. These picks can come from anywhere. They could've charted as well, but they could also be album cuts, from soundtracks, b-sides...anything at all. And lastly, we'll also be choosing our least favorite song to crack the Top 40.

HM - Courtney Barnett - Elevator Operator, Bjork - Stonemilker, Killing Joke - Euphoria, Jello Biafra - Bangkok (with The New Orleans Raunch and Soul All-Stars - yes, it is the Alex Chilton song and yes, it is the Dead Kennedys singer), Joe Satriani - Crazy Joey
5. John McLaughlin - Here Come the Jiis (He was 72 when he recorded Black Light and with 4th Dimension he almost reached the intensity of the original Mahavishnu Orchestra. Recommended to everyone who liked Birds of Fire back in 1973.)
4. FFS - Dictator's Son (Sparks with Franz Ferdinand, a good song despite their own prognosis: Collaborations Don't Work.)
3. Ed Kuepper - Some Said (A minimalistic atmospheric masterpiece that rocks without bass or drums.)
2. Mdou Moctar - Iblis Amghar (Heavy hitting Sahara blues that was released as the soundtrack for a movie translated "Rain the Colour Blue With a Little Red In It". If that sounds like Purple Rain to you, you are on the right track as Mdou is a great Prince fan and the album works just as well without the movie - just like in the other case.)
1. Sarah Shook & the Disarmers - Dwight Yoakam (Drinking water tonight because I drank all the whiskey this morning. The album Sidelong is recommended to everyone who likes Mekons-fuelled country.)
No Richard Thompson, Roxanne?
@@frangarcia7774 Still was my #2 AOTY (behind Sleater-Kinney), so it was already covered. (Songhoy Blues, Wire, Los Lobos as well.)
OK. That explains it. I'll check out a few of the songs from your list I haven't heard
I had a different Sarah Shook song on my list. Bummer about the new album; I can't get passed the vocoder.
@@johnlefsky8731Sarah Shook - I liked the first and second album more than the 2022 release, which still is not bad (3,5 stars from me, her others were 4 star albums).
2015. Another great year of new musical discoveries from your song selections and extraordinarily glaring omissions from the same. In any case, my five favorites:
1. Detroit- Gaz Coombes: very shocked by this tune. Great melody and sound.
2. Love Me- the 1975
3. Between Me and You- Brandon Flowers: nice pick Kram! Great production indeed.
4. Compound Fracture- My Morning Jacket
5. Majesty- Ghost
Two honorable mentions from the Billboard- "Budapest" by George Ezra (forgot about this one!) and "Tennessee Whiskey" by Chris Stapleton (just heard it at a bar tonight! Great production and song)
Just finding 5 acceptable Billboard choices for 2015 has been a serious challenge but thankfully the Wildcards were more plentiful:
Billboard:
Renegades - X Ambassadors
Shots - Imagine Dragons
Adventure Of A Lifetime - Coldplay
Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson feat. Bruno Mars *
Budapest - George Ezra
* I thought this was from 2014 but if Kramzer can choose it for 2015, then so can I.
Wildcards:
Aftermath - Muse
Destinies Entwined - Waterboys
I Wanna Get Lost With You - Stereophonics
Routine - Steven Wilson & Ninet Tayeb
Worst song: What Do You Mean? - Justin Bieber
(It might not be the worst song of the year but he deserves the award for being an obnoxious person)
Song of the Year: The Right Stuff - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
(Noel shows how much he has evolved as a musician since his days with Oasis, whilst remaining one of the best songwriters of his era)
HMs:
Ghost Ship - Blur
This - Collective Soul
The Ghosts Of Beverly Drive - Death Cab For Cutie
Restless - New Order
Let It Happen - Tame Impala
Hi Bryan. Had to look at my own list from 2015 for any similarities we might have. Shots and Let It Happen appear to be the only ones.
Though they didn't make my list, Budapest is very good and Adventure of a Lifetime is maybe my favorite Coldplay post-Mylo Xyloto song.
Just a handful of songs I'd never heard before. Stereophonics came away the favorite. Pretty decent songs from DCFC and from Blur as well. I'm going to try and respond to 2016 and '17 tonight. That will leave just '18 and '19 remaining. Cheers, Bryan!
@@brentjackson6839 Hi Brent, thanks for sparing the time to provide your thoughts - I certainly appreciate the time and effort involved. 👍
You know that I am less keen on recent Coldplay releases but they are still much better than most of the Billboard entries over the past decade or more. Even an average song by their standards is preferable to at least 95% of recent chart hits.
Death Cab For Cutie are another band that I have discovered more about during this series and I have enjoyed everything I have heard from them so far. Hopefully they will be the featured artist at some stage in the near future, and I will take the opportunity to listen to a lot more of their music. I’m sure there will also be many of us who are looking forward to Stereophonics’ week. I will definitely be taking part in that one. 😃
Speak soon, my friend.
All three are, indeed, great songs but the Flowers song is the only one, out of these three, that stuck with me all this time...I had to go do a refresh on the other two...So, there's that
Good call on the songs from The Waterfall by MMJ. It's an inconsistent album, but it's got some great songs on it.
My #1 for 2015 is "Giant Peach" by Wolf Alice.
0:43 im with you Jason.
Still running nearly a week behind with my lists from the UK charts. Real life keeps getting in the way! 27 songs made mylong list and no act had more than 1 song on that without making my top 10. Star of the year is Taylor Swift with another 2 songs from her 1989 album and was a whisker away from making it a total of 5 from there. Plenty of female vocals in my top 10 with the likes of Adele and Florence Welch appearing once again. On the male side, veteran Noel Gallagher makes it, with Foals and The 1975 ensuring a certain amount of alternativeness:
When we were Young - Adele
Ship to Wreck - Florence & The Machine
Mountain at my Gates - Foals
Riverman - Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
Loud Places - Jamie XX ft Romy
Love me - The 1975
You don’t own me - Saygrace ft G-Eazy
Bad Blood - Taylor Swift ft Kendrick Lemar
Style - Taylor Swift
King - Years & Years
Loving the Torres and Carly love here. And I have pretty conflicted feelings about Grimes these days, but "Flesh Without Blood" is a really fantastic track from a very good album.
my top 2 song of 2015 are: #2.Wake Up Call-Nothing But Thieves..#1.Will To Life-Tall Ships
Love the CRJ songs. But most of my songs of the year would have to come from Carrie and Lowell. Such a great album.

I am amazed Run Away With Me didn't chart.
After trying to figure out which of you three lines up most with my taste I've finally concluded that it's a third of each of you. Weird how that works out..some weeks I think Jason's a genius, some Joe and some Kram..how can that be?

The coolest thing music wise in 2015 was meeting 2 artists from America.
I was recordshopping here in the Netherlands and these 2 Americans walk into the store. They want to sell their first EP. The owner bought a few and i also bought one of them. We talked for a bit, they met in Berlin and started a country rock band.
After that they did a gig with a band of a friend of mine in a local bar and a few months later they got back to America and start touring there.
Now in 2022 they have more songs and a album under their belt and also toured with Electric Six.
They are called Volk and the ep is called boutique western swing compositions.
That was my most fun music based moment of 2015

"Like a River" (My Morning Jacket) has a guitar part in it that's a carbon copy of one in Supertramp's "School." Cool song, though. I dig it.
I'll try no to be too biased since my favorite album of all time released this year, but 2015 was a strong year clearly indicating a tide shifting a bit in the sound of music. I'll try not to overwhelm my choices with just songs from To Pimp a Butterfly because I could write a 50 page essay on that album but i'll select a few of my favorites before covering some other tracks i loved this year.
The choice for my favorite song of the year is obviously from my favorite album TPAB, and that would be The Blacker the Berry by Kendrick Lamar. This song plays out a brilliant tale and exercise of his feeling of hypocrisy over his strive to strengthen and bring hope to the black community, yet he realizes that the circumstances of the harships that the community withstands lead it to feed upon itself. He criticizes his and others in his community for preaching black rights and black power when "gangbanging made me kill a n**** blacker than me". Some of these comments he made garnered some controversy understandably but I personally take it as him just seeing an outcome where the black community could lift eachother up rather than tear eachother down due to the gang violence that persists. As for the song itself, kendrick goes absolutely visceral on this beat, this is seriously a once in a lifetime performance on these verses, I was completely taken away at first listen by the energy he conveys on this track and how perfectly it connects with the instrumental and the themes of the song. There's also a wonderful jazz cooldown after his last verse that feels like a moment of reflection after the anger and feeling of self hyprocisy that he lets out during the track. I have trouble describing in words how impactful the song feels for me though, listening to it is the only way to do that song and entire album justice. A landmark piece of the hip hop scene.
Kendrick Lamar - Alright: the other track I decided to cover from the same album is Alright, simply because i've never listened to a song that was so ready for the radio but at the same time so brilliant as an artistic statement, there are so many fascinating parts of the production that could be picked apart in this song from the saxaphones to the harmonizing acapella that forms the bulk of the instrumental itself. Kendrick also tears it down in this performance with eloquent flows yet words that are always meaningful for the themes of the album, and yet he still manages to put in a chorus that fulfills thar catchy hook for a modern trap rap song. The song works even better in the context of the album after the track U but even on its own its a fantastic hit that outclasses everything else from this entire decade for me. I simply couldn't gush enough about the material from an album that completely changed my perception of how a story could be told in music.
Alabama Shakes - Give Me All of Your Love: While I was recently on a long drive through the mountains of Colorado with my sibling, we decided to play through this album and this track felt as imposing and powerful as the mountains we were winding through. Incredible bombastic production for a voice that oozes passion and unrest.
Death Grips - Billy Not Really: probably the last time i'll cover any track for them, this is kind of the end of my mid 2010's experimental industral hip hop phase and i feel the frontrunners start to wane in quality after The Powers that B. What drives a lot of the first half of this double album are the unnerving but beautiful vocal samples from bjork on tracks like this one. Billy Not Really is just one of many chaotic songs from DG with a ridiculous name but musically there is so much happening in here that i'm left wanting to disect more and more of it. MC Ride is more collected on a lot of these verses and gives great bars and flows over these really cool wind instrument portions that feel like its out of an actual track from bjork herself.
Joey Bada$$ - Save The Children: off of another great conscious hip hop album of this year, Joey is in rare form on the opener of B4.DA.$$ on top of unforgettable production that sends a message that you're about to be sent on a journey, and as a standalone track its still a great track from an overall milestone year in my opinion.
Careful. Some of the users here may attack you because you wrote passionately about hip hop..
@@echosmyron1278 they can only attack me by bringing up indie artists i've never heard of that all sound the same its alright

SONG OF THE YEAR 2015: Susanne Sundfør - Slowly [I like to call this the ‘God Only Knows’ of the 21st Century because of its sheer beauty. This slow, balladesque Synth-Pop song is about a love relationship of two very lonely people. The way Susanne sings “I know you’re lonely | I can feel it in the way you hold me”makes me tear up every time. The song ends like God Only Knows with different vocal parts mixed together, all sung by Susanne here. Phenomenal song, one of the best ever.]
Lucky you get to use Run Away with Me for charts.
@@TimeToGetAlone I don't feel ashamed!
Ok ones I like from the charts you did Budapest! Wow Jason who I usually agree with the least had this one. Uptown Funk - love that song. I can't feel my face.
That they didn't make Run Away With Me the 1st single of off Jepson's Emotion is one of the worst marketing calls of the century. The song is so good though that it totally redeems not charting.
I must admit that I have a harder time hanging with the 21st century music, especially post 2010. I'm CLUELESS when it comes to what is popular. But I always enjoy watching these videos anyway. Always entertaining. Thanks guys.

Glad to see Julia Holter so high up your list. That whole album is amazing. We don’t share as many artists this year, though. I had lost interest in The Decemberists/Deerhunter/Belle and Sebastian’s songwriting by 2015, and I’ve never been much of a Bowie fan (even his 70s material). Tame Impala, Courtney Barnett, and Mac Demarco are among the (many) newer artists from the 2010s that I don’t connect with.
I forgot to put “Pretty Pimpin’” by Kurt Vile on my list though.. it’s really the only track from that album that I ever go back to.
We've got a bunch of artists in common more than songs this year. As usually, you've got a few ones I never heard of, some that aren't really my thing (metal...) and a good bunch I really like
We have about 6 artists in common; you have some artists I need to explore. I didn't realize the Bowie song was a singles first; one of his will be on my list next week.
Hey John. Looking at your list I'd recommend you to check out Elza Soares, Songhoy Blues and Riley Walker. You won't be disappointed.
I'll check out as well a few songs from your list I never heard of
@@frangarcia7774 I got the latest Songhoy Blues last year, but I haven't heard the older stuff; I'll have to backtrack. And I saw Walker for that tour, but I plum forgot. I don't know Elza Soares, but I'll give a listen. I've been listening to so much new music I don't backtrack as much as I should.

@@Sir_Eyeball one of today's better pop artists.
My wife and I love a lot of the same artists, but she has a soft spot for some of the chart toppers. 2015 was the year when my wife started saying “You don’t know this song?!” I have no idea what’s happening on the pop charts. 2015 was a so-so year for me. I’m glad Stapleton ruled country that year, but I’m with Jason - I’ve always found his albums kind of boring. Surprised none of you chose a Father John Misty song. Would peg at least two of you as fans. I liked that album when it came out, but he has quickly lost in charm in my worldview. I can’t vote for any of these songs. Never heard them. I’m sure one you is right, though. 🤷🏻♂️
I want to go on the record that To Pimp a Butterfly is a masterpiece, but impossible to isolate a single song for a list like this.

Burn down the DJ because the music, the music they're constantly playing says nothing to me about my life and I don't like it.
TLM - Morning Jacket and Flowers songs are OK as is Reckless" by New Order. It's not a great song but the best song this year is Beck's "Morning". Richard Thompson's She Never Could Resist A Winding Road" is pretty good as is Beck's Dream" and Yo La Tengo's Somebody's in Love". From other's lists: Richard Hawley - Heart Of Oak is good, he is always good.
And Los Lobos' When We Were Free". Lobos has aged well. They did a song called The Town" which is stark and has a beautiful guitar. " A car rolls by way down low There's a name on a wall that I know. I heard a shot go off in the night Our father said everything is alright. In the town where I come from. Some kids are playing out in the yard A mother says "don't wander too far". I can go there when I dream. I close my eyes and it's all I see The town where I come from". Now, this is not my life or the music they're constantly "misplaying", but at least it has depth and feelings that move me.

I thought that some of Carly Rae Jepsen’s appeal is that she isn’t particularly hot. She’s more of a dorky/awkward girl-next-door type. Compared to someone like Dua Lipa, Katy Perry, Charli XCX or Olivia Rodrigo, Jepsen seems quite average.
