Current Wharton junior here-I decided to hop on RUclips instead of studying for my ACCT 102 exam and came across this. I loved hearing your experiences as an undergrad, and it makes me look forward to reflecting on how much I've grown throughout these four years. I strongly resonate with what you said about moving from the west to east coast. I'm from Arizona, and I understand not being able to see family as much as kids from PA or NJ do. Also, thank you for the class recommendations! I'm planning on taking Negotiations in the fall!
I'm happy I came across your video and will continue to follow your channel! Wishing you all the best :)

Great video! For those of you around the world who cannot afford to attend Wharton, I want to share a short story. Several years ago I wanted to see how good the course instruction was on the Coursera platform. I already had an MBA and a law degree, but I was curious about online learning. So I logged on to Coursera and took a free marketing class given by three Wharton professors. I finished the course. The course content and instruction was outstanding. I could not believe how good the content and lectures were. I neither work for Coursera nor have any affiliation to Penn. I just wanted to share my experience with others who may not have the resources to attend Wharton.

Loved the video Taylor! It was interesting to hear about UPenn because my cousin went their for his bachelors and masters in Architecture. Totally agree though, that higher education is definitely dependent on preference of the person. Really appreciate the open minded review, while remaining honest to yourself. It feels that nowadays everyone just loves to bash private universities for their high cost with little value for some reason. For sure, university in the U.S. is overpriced in some part and much can be learned online, but being part of a community for several years and building relationships with like-minded people is really valuable. Let alone, the extra motivation you get from working on projects together in contrast to do online courses in front of your laptop. It is just different. Nonetheless,, it is DEFINITELY NOT for everyone and I know many friends who cannot stand the academic nature of class and rather be more practical about their work (although you sometimes just really need to learn stuff instead of trial and error every little thing).

I rank schools by alumni economic outcomes. My favorite is to view the portion still in student loan debt plus the portion of those in default.
Then I sprinkle on top of that, which alumni are more likely to receive VC dollars.
I created an algorithm to account for these and other alumni economic variables.
UPenn is up there definitely. Congratulations to you.❤

I work in Executive Education at Wharton and the businesses that recruit Wharton Grads are unparalleled. They are literally the pick of the litter and you will typically find Wharton Grads at the C level in every major corporation throughout the world along with Stanford, Yale and Harvard. There are many other great schools with those same claims but from a numbers standpoint they are typically head and shoulders above the rest. On a side note, Stanford Grads are leading the way in start up’s in Silicon Valley and Harvard grads are starting their own businesses as opposed to working for others

When I was younger, my goal was to go to U of M or Stanford business schools. I got rejected from U of M, never applied to Stanford because of costs, and ended up at WMU (“waste-rn” we called it). My last year I studied at UCT in Cape Town. Their business school was awesome btw. Anyway, I was one of only a handful of non-ivy league international students at UCT. I got to become friends with a ton of them. What’s the main difference between these students and students at normal State universities?
Two things: 1) Their vocabulary was enriched. They spoke with big sounding words. 2) They often postured, thinking highly of themselves. Meaning, they believed in themselves more. Why? Maybe it was based on some external validation by a brand, like Harvard or Princeton or Yale or Middlebury. They took that external validation and tried to integrate it into their identities. Were either of these helpful?
The first is only helpful for increasing efficiency IF others know the big words too. Otherwise it decreases efficiency if they don’t know the words and often results in organizations where the culture doesn’t provide a safe place for people to say dumb things, make mistakes publicly with their co-workers and then improve. So mostly big words were unhelpful in the real world.
The second thing was helpful for some people. Because if they believe they can learn to add value, then they are more likely to do so compared to someone who doesn’t believe they can add value. It’s a self proclaiming prophecy - both people are right. However, for others, I noticed it was a sticky point. Their self belief turned into a ego - a downward spiral. They focused too much on “self” and their brand and imagine. Not enough on becoming curious about specific problems, improving them and adding real value to an organization or market. So I would say the second advantage was slightly helpful, but only for those with a strong enough curiosity around improving problems and adding value.
It was interesting because I was a tech founder at that time, running a brand that was widely known around the world. So the ivy students did tend to treat me differently than they treated the handful of other non-ivy league international students at UCT. The convo with me quickly went from “what school do you attend,” (posturing) to more about the dotcom and wanting to learn from real life scaling of the business. For that I am grateful because it gave me a far greater in-depth access to these ivy league pillars in the clouds. :) :)

College isn't for everyone and it depends what you want to do. That being said, I wish I went to a more prestigious school. I graduated the University of Rochester back in 2004. It was a good private university but it doesn't have the alumni network or name recognition like Wharton. Getting your foot in the door puts you way ahead of most college graduates.

For every Graham (successful RUclipsr or social influencer) there are millions that don't make the same millions that Graham does, no matter how hard one works. Their work ethic is unparalleled especially Meet Kevin's, but I'd still say at least 30% of their success can be attributed to luck. Most people aren't as lucky, and college is a great alternative. Tuition is a scam, but the expensive piece of paper we call a degree is worth it because of the experiences along the way.

However, "life" is still the ultimate university. It will help define your goals and boundaries and ultimately set you on your path. Yeah that was kind of preachy but I do believe it. For those of you who are not US citizens or permanent residents, remember UPenn's financial aid policy is only need-blind for US citizens or PRs. The financial aid for the international students is not need-blind and your financial aid requests will be also considered (need-aware) into the admission decision.

Yay loved this video Taylor! I think there are so many valuable lessons to be learned in college/university for sure 🤗 the system as a business is what hurts so many people...the tuition is outrageous and it only keeps growing every year. Hypothetically if someone had to get student loans for the entire $79k a year (which I would say the majority of students have to take out a substantial amount in loans), that’s $316k for four years and then it starts building interest once you graduate. If someone made $100k a year right out of college, after taxes and living expenses, at best and if they’re steadfast, they may be able to pay off $40k-$50k a year off their student loan debt a year, so they would be able to pay off their loans maybe after 8-10 years to include the interest accrual 😬😬😬 So I think that’s a big factor in people asking if it’s “worth it.” But at the same time you would probably have the same type of ratio with a public university in terms of average income and student loan debt. Unfortunately nowadays you have to have a piece of paper from a credible institution even if you could potentially learn it all online. I do think hands on learning should be required for all degrees though, like as apart of the curriculum. That’s a change I would like to see. Anywho, Its just a big business (college/university in general) 😬 I am a HUGE advocate for life-long learning and continually learning new things/topics and I learned a ton when getting my undergrad and grad degree (for the major and for life in general) I just wish the system wasn’t structured the way it is and I wish people didn’t have to go into ridiculous amounts of debt 😖 just my two cents on the matter! LOL

    • @TaylorBell
      @TaylorBell  3 года назад

Thank you so much Brittani!! And tell me about it, that really is a scary scenario. Luckily Penn specifically offers pretty good financial aid to those who need it-- "only" 27% of students take out loans on top of their financial aid packages. BUT I know that's not the case at all schools. I couldn't agree more that tuition, especially at private universities, is truly outrageous. The fact that its such a business when it's something people by and large "have" to do (i.e, check the box that they got a college degree when applying to most jobs) makes me sick. The same goes for the college board-- having to PAY college board to send my SAT scores and subject test scores when I was applying was laughable. Even though college board covers that cost for people who truly need it, it's not an expense people should have to pay in the first place (similar to a large portion of that $79k asking price lol). Anyway, I could also rant about this for hours 😂but I agree with you

Wharton undergraduate income - 100,000... Time 4 years, cost 320,000 (full sticker price) to zero, plus time lost studying for exams that could be generating income. Journeyman plumber, electrician, hvac income -licensed, insured, self-employed - 100,000 to 250,000. Get paid while you learn 100% of the time (35,000-50,000) a year. I'd also add that other trades are similar in pay (elevators, welders, roofers, masonry, ect)... It takes 4 years though to become a journeyman in most states.

I’m a soon to be graduated aerospace engineering undergrad, headed to UCLA for my graduate degree in aerospace this fall. While I probably have much more to learn, I agree 100% with Elon that we have way too many business majors and not enough engineers! Lol. A business is all about inventing products that makes people’s lives better, and innovations-made possible by science and engineering-are what make that possible, not the actual business aspect lol. Tesla wouldn’t matter, for example, if the car itself didn’t work at all. It wouldn’t matter how “efficiently” the business side of things were running. But if the car worked and the business/marketing side was slacking a bit, it wouldn’t be as big as a deal since the product would work!
We need more people out there inventing stuff, not managing stuff! Lol.
