I consult to architects and other various customers in construction/design field. Early in my career 65-70 hrs was norm. 10 years later, flex schedule but can bump to 50-60 hours when needed, some sundays mixed in for a couple which I actually enjoy. 401k match, over six figs, performance based bonuses. Other companies offer company vehicle with gas card, and Corporate credit card but I get to expense my meetings so I collect travel miles as an added perk/incentive. Still no gas though .

Really enjoy your videos about UPenn. As a person that really enjoys making slideshows for school projects & teaching novice debaters, I really appreciate how informative and organized your videos are (graphics are a MUST in videos in my opinion). But most of all, I really love your energy!!! I’ve always been a very shy person since my childhood, which means that I get really nervous when I’m in front of a camera or standing in front of a classroom - I’ve learned to keep myself composed, but I’m not an exciting person by any means … that’s something to work on though. People quit consulting because the pay is garbage compared to what they charge the client. I remember looking at the contract and it was something like $250/hr for the client. You make like $50/hr? It just feels like you're being pimped. Consulting always has this kind of reputation since there's always fresh meat coming through the door. It feels empowering to be the ones to "fix" other people's problems, but in actuality it was plain exploitative.
I went to work for a client afterwards, did the same work (actually much better hours), and had much better name recognition on my resume. For your 16 hours of work with that salary you're basically making 60k a year. If you include the time value of money, well, that's up to you. How much do you value your time spend making your company rich than doing fun stuff in the city.
    The math doesn't work.
I now work 8 hour work day sharp. Some days, we have "casual days" and people just sign off.

One of the best things about consulting is that as you rise through the ranks you actually gain more and more independence. A partner may check in with a director a couple of times a week, but for the most part the director is running the gig. You have no manager looking over your shoulder every moment of the day. In my experience if the client is happy, work is being delivered and is high quality, and the client is paying the bills, you can be a director and partners pretty much will leave you alone while they focus on selling work to new clients. Once you gain that independence/autonomy and have been in consulting for a long time, it is difficult or impossible to go work in corporate where you have to report to an office and direct manager every day. That is why many who are in for a long time end up becoming consulting lifers.

Hey Taylor. Your story is cool. As someone who is graduating next month and will be joining one of the Big 4 soon I can relate to most things which you were storytelling, especially about starting a consulting role post-COVID. You have also inspired me to start my own journey on RUclips. Keep up the good work! More positivity, more content.

Find this so much more relatable. Thank you for speaking about your salary. I'm German but I'm always curious what people in other parts of the word - and especially in NYC - earn. So thank you! Great video!

Hey Taylor, Will here from Sunny South Africa! ☀I currently work in our Air Force as a Mechanical Engineer. I completed an MBA last year and I'm now prepping for a case interview with Oliver Wyman and also hoping to land more interviews with others. Love your content and your injection of humour. You're really helping me put this career shift into perspective. My biggest concern would probably whether I can still make time for gym/fitness during the week as it keeps me on my A-game. I will figure it out as I go along though. Thanks again!

I was looking into it consulting at a major firm prior to accepting my current risk analyst role. Total compensation ended up being the same and my friend who took the consulting job works 60-80 hours a week. On the flip side, I work 40 hours. So, per hour he makes a fair bit less. I'd assume that's why there's a high turnover at a lot of consulting firms, hours don't match the pay. I can see your RUclips channel becoming your career in the future, your presentation skills are really good.

That is honestly very interesting as starting positions in Germany at the top management consultancies typically start at 65k, maybe 70k all in. Considering that we have much higher income tax, that is a joke compared to what other countries' graduates get in consulting.

Thank you for sharing this and being so open with us. As to the salary part, I have to say that me as a management consultant with less than one year experience, almost like you, earn in Germany less than half of your salary per year. And that is even the number before taxes. As you know, here in Europe we have pretty high taxes...

Well done Taylor. You cover your topics so thoroughly that finding any gaps is extremely difficult. I do have one question though. What are your thoughts on mentorship? Do you see any real value in it or is it just a natural extension of the career path you've chosen? Personally I think the concept of taking someone "under your wing" is all but gone. Personal insecurities plus the cut throat nature of our chosen fields have sadly made mentorships kind of go the way of the dinosaur. At least that's my opinion.
Anyway on a lighter note the reason you dad probably sneezes so hard is so that he does blow out his chest cavity! I tried one of those " silent" sneezes once and I felt like broke a rib!! I swore I'd never do that again.😂😂😂

    • @TaylorBell
      @TaylorBell  2 года назад +1

Thanks so much Lou, appreciate that! Hmm interesting, I have a few different mentors at work (everyone is assigned a career advisor) and he has been super valuable and awesome to get to know. I don't have 1 person per-se that's taken me under their wing since I'm on new projects with new people every few months!
Ahaha that makes sense then. Both of my parents have some of the loudest sneezes 😂 Gotta love 'em though

Great video. After only 1 year at the job you obviously have your head around the industry. And well done for no work on the weekends! Your firm seems fairly relaxed when compared to most big firms which is nice to hear. I'm still enjoying it after 30 years, though the last 25 has been running my own firm. That's kinda cool as I get to do what I want!

What's your thoughts on foreign students and their chances at a job in consulting? With them not having a degree from an Ivy League American school, is it still possible to land jobs like yours? I'm about to start my MSc in Business in Norway, and the topic of students without a US degree is something we dont hear a lot about! I am enjoying your videoes!

Great video. Work/life balance is important. I'm 50 now, been doing accounting for years and most important is to not be stressed + get a good nights sleep + being able to enjoy your time off while not thinking about work. I am blessed to have all that now with a lesser role but I also get to keep my nice salary.
