I love how personal and casual your videos are. The humor and just generally organic nature of your guys' video process is enjoyable to watch. I miss this style from other RUclipsrs who have gone too commercial with their styling, where things feel scripted and unnatural. Rocking it guys 👍👍👍
When you said this Southern California boy needs some sun, I understood exactly what you meant! We grew up in the south Florida area and I just need the sun too! It is so therapeutic!
We are in the city, and have plans to build a shed in the backyard. My next achievement with that will be to collect water to at least water the garden. Hubs is a designer, so he already has plans done for the shed, which will house all our garden tools and supplies, along with our mowers and rider mower. I'm really anxious to get that process moving along this coming spring. Along with adding a green house. You're doing great, Jason! What an improvement to that little bedraggled building! 😊😊. Will be so awesome for you to have thar much more space.
I'm so happy this property was waiting for your confidence to build up. Look at you having fun and realizing your dreams👍 Way to go Jason ❣️❣️❣️ Love your progress and videos 👌
I'm always admiring the many projects and improvements you think of and create. This really is a calling for you and I'm glad you and Lorraine took the leap to homestead. Wish your family a happy and healthy Christmas and a prosperous New Year!
I love how your family shows the day to day “struggles” of homesteading. The way you have to figure things out. Love your family’s videos! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us!
Wow Jason well done that is amazing & you now have me working on a plan also. I want to wish you All a Very Merry Christmas & Happy New year & Thank you All for allowing me into your Life. Love your Friend Denise- Australia
Your freezer of meat lasting two years? Excellent! Time to get a new calf so it’s ready by the time you need it! 😉 we’re setting up water catchment too, so this video was helpful! Thanks!
Cow hay here in Southern Nevada is $28 for a 3 string bale. I have 1 bull, 5 cows, and 4 calves, 11 pregnant goats, and 1 buck. 2 mini donkeys. Feed is my biggest expense.
You are so lucky. I have one of those containers but it just is a dust collector on the plains of Colorado. You have a very merry Christmas, love your channel
We have no sun right now in So California so you aren’t missing much. You guys have done an awesome job. Makes me miss Idaho. Where is your compost pile?
his is a great system Jason. Just go ahead a spray paint it black. Tarps are just go to rip over time. This will be so good to have in the summer when you don't get so much rain. It would be good to have another connected to it. That will be a big help in Spring when you do get more rain. Y'all have a Blessed day. Enjoy this week before Christmas then have a very merry Christmas and the best of everything in the new year.
Put the screen on the ibc tote hole so it just washes away. A 275 gallon will last 3-6 months depending on weather and how many animals. The big barn you have will need a multiple ibc totes stacked or the blue barrels with pvc plumbing to a turn on valve. And maybe a over flow valve put under ground to a creek. If you want to get fancy it could be a hydro electric system 😉 store energy use it later. Alot of possibilities
Hi Jason and family 🎄 just us 2saying hi and thanks again for sharing this video update and lifestyle 🎄 another great project ⭐️⭐️⭐️ yous are doing a grand job 🎄 whish you all a merry Christmas and a happy new year 🎄 den and sue from across the pond uk 👍👍👍🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🚌🚌🚌
Your boards were 12' long (x2). Assuming ~10' in depth for the roof that is 34,560 square inches. So every 1" of rain would be 149.6 gallons. You will fill the tote with 1.84" of rain.
We were blessed to have our property come with a 120'x40' barn. If I could collect half that water, it would be over 1,600 gallons per inch of rain. We just had a 1.5" rain event... no wonder its so soggy out there.
You should either paint the tank black or cover it with a dark tarp to keep sunlight out! Sunlight will grow algae!
oh yeah
@@SowtheLand I'm sure you already knew that though, lol!
@@SowtheLand you should paint white to reflect the heat from the sun, black absorbs the heat.
Jason, the screw "extra hand" is genius!
Hi.... Jason, thank you for showing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐣🐥🦃🐕🐄🐖🌱🌺🌹🌻🌼🌸🌷🏡🎥👍👍👍
I am so jealous that you can still dig in your dirt. Ours is rock solid now 🤣
Sorry to hear that
@@SowtheLand thanks,. Just the joys of Winter in Canada.

Nice "Back to the hardware store" move!
Good job everyone we have to learn for r selfs appreciate y'all merry Christmas and blessings
I love to see you put swells in and a food forest, love you content, if I had ten thumbs you get 10 out 10
When you said this Southern California boy needs some sun, I understood exactly what you meant! We grew up in the south Florida area and I just need the sun too! It is so therapeutic!
Maybe paint rain barrel black to avoid mold forming
It's like you're in that old "Strongest Man Competition" rolling a Fiat sideways up a hill. You should tell everyone that tote was full of water. ;-)
Thank you for not giving up on Zek and Elvira "other" homesteaders would have had them hanging on the hooks already. ❤🙏🐷🐷
Jason if you paint that tank black, maybe leave a thin strip unpainted so you can see the water level, just a thought.
Great job! That is something we would like to get set up as well. Every rainstorm we see all the water we could have collected!
Good start! Next time you have to paint a roof, use a cheap throw away rag mop. Great for sealing black top surfaces too.

Paint the outside of the tote black! works perfect!
God bless you guys, I appreciate the videos, keep them coming 🙂
Tumbling that rain barrel, looked like you were preparing for an Iron Man competition. Cheers.
Doing this between our coops, provide water for the chicken!
Early this spring i got a tote cover from Amazon for about 30 bucks and so far it's holding up great and keeping the water clear. Love your channel.

Keep doing things Jason , you got this man .
You are so strong! And determined!!
Reminds me of my Dad…a farmer and PE teacher! That guy was soooo creative! And strong!
❤️

We should all nicely call on John Deere to give you a tractor Jason so dont be surprised they hear from me .
One good rain will fill your container, amazing how much rains come off a small roof.
Lorraine should have put the clothes washing in that IBC container 🤣
man the pigs are growing really fast.
Nice start! I suspect 1 small rain will fill that up in no time... I would look into a 5000 gal. tank.
I love the water saving ideas! I wish more people could do this~ thanks for sharing 🤗❤👍

Maybe some screen in gutter to keep debris from filling up black gutter
please show vlogs on the interior renovation of the chicken brooder of this
You could make a swale to direct watter. Also would be great to have a couple of LARGE cisterns.
0:28 like your videos, hello from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦🌹
Fantastic - I'm about to set up a barrel to water our chickens which is fed by the rain gutter!! Thanks Jason
great!
Jason, a cheap black tarp wrapped around the top, and sides of the tote, and bungee cord will work on the tote.
I bet half inch of rain and it will be full! Way to go!
You are so lucky. I have one of those containers but it just is a dust collector on the plains of Colorado. You have a very merry Christmas, love your channel
They have IBC tote covers for a reasonable price. They are a dark tarp material fitted to go right over.
Love how you do things! I mean it. My style.
Water is key on a homestead! 💧💦
I think you need a "first flush," system. But, this is looking pretty good. Also, raise the tank for gravity feed pressure.
Thank you. I have plans to collect from a small shed on our property. You gave me some great ideas.
Looking fwd to the updates on the rain catchment! Have a very merry Christmas, guys!🎁🎄✝️☃️🦌🎶💖
You’re getting it. God bless
Great tips! The third hand tip is perfect!
What a great idea! You could put screen at the top at the gutter too.
good idea! thank you so much for watching and commenting. it means a lot to me.
I think its a great start! Well done!
Good job jason. 😊

What a lovely video, I really enjoyed it! 👍
Rain water is also good for washing machines or dishwashers because it does not have as much limescale in it 😊
🇦🇺You can have several IBC containers link several together.

i really like rainwater collection system videos. im currently designing mine for my barn
Merry Christmas
merry Christmas!
True! Merry Christmas you guys!🎄🤗
Ok group let's get this channel to 200k
Hi, Jason and Lorraine! This is a very interesting video. I absolutely love the design of your chicken tractor. Merry Christmas!
You are always doing something different love the video may you and your lovely family have a wonderful Christmas Rosa
Hey Jason, you can spray paint the IBC tote black.
Looks great ❤😊
you can also add a tiny bit of chlorine to the tote to prevent algae; you can google the ppg and do the math; it wont hurt the animals
You guys are so funny ,love your videos.
Great job!
My Dad was always like that, figuring out way too do it by himself.❤😊
Innovation is a wonderful thing 😉
Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄 SOW THE LAND FAMIL🎄🎄. LOURDES E.from PHILIPPINES
i have seen people just paint the tote black hugssss
Love this channel…so fresh….great people‼️
Brilliant ideas for your water catchment! I just love your ingenuity 👏💖👍
Thanks so much 😊

If you do go with ibc totes for rain water I'd paint them to hopefully prevent algae growth
Spoke to soon lol
Amazing job ❤
Thank you! 😄
Heya nice rain water catch in stall I use the same IBC but then 2 on top of each other (small space )
we painted our totes black.. but they do make covers for them now....
Great idea, save water!
I love your videos!!!
I use rain water on my chicken coop right now gutter into a barrel than into pvc pipe with nipples
buy more gutter and finish it off; you can leave the downspout where it is
Looks great!! Hoping you put a drip edge on that roof?
That pond is huge.
You so smart! Loved that screw hand!
thanks for commenting and watching Sally! I hope you have a happy Christmas.

Above ground tank will freeze solid this winter.
I have never had an above ground tank freeze solid on me in 7 years. Winters are not too bad here. so far. :)
I never knew how much I’d love zip ties until we got our homestead lol! Homesteaders duct tape I swear!
$80 bucks is a great deal. I could not find used with out chemicals in my area and had to shell out $450 for a new one.
Dawn dish detergent works well for cutting cooking oil.
i bet ya it'll take 1 hr and that tote will be full in a good rain, you'll save so much water you won't believe
Did you use a level so the gutter will flow in the right direction for you?
