It is rare that a video on building something is as clearly presented and easy to follow. I have subscribed to your channel and eagerly wait for more like this. Thank you!
An easy way to level out the ground for setting concrete blocks is to use a 6" high mound of gravel or granite chips and tamp them level with a tamper. Set the blocks on top and they will not shift after that. I've found that you cannot trust leveling dirt as it will settle over time and the barrels may slump slightly to one side.
Tell me you do this for a living! Everything about this video was perfect: script, pop ups, pacing, music, closeups. The project itself was detailed, included product specifications, and the end result looked great for a DIY project. Keep making more videos!
If you use a RV water pump they have an auto on solenoid so whenever you turn the hose on and the pressure drops or turn the valve on it will turn on automatically and they're much quieter

The noise might not be a bad thing once it becomes considered everyday sounds. That way when the barrel runs dry you hear the tell-tale of a problem in the works. If one the other hand stealth is required, the sinking the tub into the ground would work to mask the noise.
This is one of the best RUclips videos that I think I’ve ever seen. You articulate very well, video quality is excellent and you really make it easy to understand. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this information with us

VERY NICE JOB Sir here in Quebec, I put a water pump in the rain barrel (I have 3 rain barrel at different places) I put homemade liquid fertiliser direct inenthe rain barrel once a week for grass and garden, it work so well I love it
As someone who doesn’t know the first thing about plumbing I found this extremely helpful. Thank you so much for putting this out. Good luck with all your gardening endeavors.
Nice job Robert! One thing to consider when setting up a system like this is to include a backflow prevention device to protect you home's city water supply from potential contamination from your rain barrel source. Check your local plumbing code. It may be as simple as inexpensive double check valves or more expensive with a reduced pressure zone backflow preventer which may also require periodic inspections by a certified backflow technician. Probably safer just to pipe up two separate spigots to prevent potential cross contamination.
@@chrisl7608 I suspect the city inspector would raise hell anyway, if they saw the interlink between the water barrel and the city water lines. They freak out about it even if there is NO water barrel attached. I once had a city inspector in Cheyenne, Wyoming make all kinds of threats if I refused to install a backflow prevention device on an outdoor faucet that never connected to anything but a hose and lawn sprinkler. The trouble is not a simple matter of differential pressure. The problem arises when the city water system LOSES pressure. That's when backflow happens and pollutes the city water with water from the rain barrel.
Although a backlog preventer is a very good idea, the water line Ata spigot us not directly connected to the city water supply but rather through the house. All houses should have a backflow preventer upstream of the household water shutoff. The real concern here, is backflowing into his own household water piping.
For your future project improvement, add an "on demand" pressure switch in parallel with the manual on/off switch. When you open the valve the pressure drops and turns on the "on demand" pressure switch. When the valve is closed the water line is pressurized and the switch turns the pump off. Very neat project, well done.
You might think about a check valve from public water side toward garden hose side to prevent accidental back feed from rain barrel to public connection if you forget to turn off public water side.
You have the best instructions! I love how you include the safety steps like calling the dig number and wearing gloves. Your background music is chill and not overbearing. Your voiceovers are clear and make sense. I wish all instructional videos were like yours! Keep up the fantastic work 🙂🙂🙂 Edit: I also LOVE that you turn down the music when the voiceovers start! You have such a wonderful attention to details on everything you do!
Your design that could cross connect the rain barrel into the city water supply is not legal in the areas that I have lived...keep the systems separate or face the potential of significant fines!
Robert, I can’t tell how far away the garden is from your rain barrel. One thing I do to save water is to fill a water barrel at the garden and drain into cans (or dip water cans?) there to water by hand. I put the water precisely where it is needed. Your pump system will work nicely to fill barrels at garden side during a rainy period. Thanks for the great video. Time to grow food.

Yes I saw a video on that...but I'll look at it again when I actually get to that step...I just put 2 harbor freight 10×12 greenhouses together as one unit and I'm currently framing it with wood to keep the original aluminum frame from turning into scrap...but solar is the way to go for outdoor activities since..well...its outdoors lol...save on $$$ and rain water is much better than city water unless you're blessed to have a well which is double the bonus
WOW! A video where I didn't see something done wrong or foolishly. I've been watching quite a few video's. You can find low voltage timers that can turn your pump on and off at set intervals. I believe you can even find them where you can set a 7 day watering schedule. I have yet to start my project. I've considered solar for keeping the battery charged same as you're thinking (or may have done by now). Oh, wait - I see another video from you displaying solar panels. I applaud you for your creativity and understanding of the basics. One vide I watched the guy drilled and tapped his barrel. And I definitely had comments for him about his methodology and about the strength of such a connection. YES!!! Thus is the perfect project. This is exactly what I wanted to see. Your idea of adding solar panels makes it perfect-er! I definitely want to see that! Way to go...
Nice project; very impressive. You have the right kind of voice and cadence to be a great teacher. By the way, drip irrigation is the best. Avoid spraying and sprinkling leaves because it can cause mold and disease to your plants.
You sure do a great deal of cutting. Shows the value of having a specialized, dedicated, tool. Also how you can modify layout on the run. Thanks for sharing.
Well Done, you hit the major points..... IT WORKS..... One learns from each project, if one mounts the pump perhaps on a couple of 2x4s (raise it) and added a port near the bottom of the tank, adding copper brillo pad to keep the bugs and mice out, if there is an unexpected leak the water has some place to go before the pump is submerged....
I definitely like to see the next advance video. I agree to use the rain water usage, less use the city water which seems so pricy, is the way to go. Thank you.
Have to agree with Susan's comment - this is amazing! Great planning for the setup, and great production on the video - I love how you stop the video and put the parts on the screen, very handy for those of us making a checklist.
I am not able to do such pvc installation for my garden because I live in Canada, and our ground freeze line is between four and five feet deep. I am lucky to have a well with a free standing hydrant attached to it. I attach a hose to the hydrant and fill my rain barrel with well water. I am using simple gravity at this time, attached to my soaker hoses. Those hoses need more work because they are still twisty. I may add two more raised beds next year, and use the black tubing. Then motorizing makes sense. Well done. I watched your next video before this one.
Wow! This year was my first year doing a garden and it's so exhausting having to manually water everyday. But I don't think this old lady can achieve what you have achieved. My goodness! I dont think I'll ever be able to do this on my own but I'm saving your video anyway! Thanks! Nicely done!
An amazing well thought out project. And it worked! With all those connections, I would probably been at the hardware store at least six times for more fittings. Great job!
Lots of good ideas here to improve my setup! I used a 3/4 Horsepower pump using 120 Volt ac power. Then I run a hose, (similar to your setup), from the 50 gallon rain barrel to the pump and connect a garden hose to the pump. It gives plenty of pressure, as much as from house pressure. Also, I only use it to water the lawn and boulevard because the rain barrel is fed from my house roof which leaches tar chemicals and grit from the shingles. Thanks Green Tech Town.
I also found you because I’d like to do this project- many thanks and well done. You are undoubtedly more technically gifted than I am, but this is a tremendous help and a pleasure to watch.
Great video. I patterned my set-up after yours. My pump is connected top 2 - IBC totes. I used a DC pump with a battery connected to a 20 watt solar panel and controller to kekep the battery charged. Works great.
You did a great job at pipe fitting and your running dialog/instructions are spot on brilliant. I wish you lived close so I could hire you. Bravo Dude You Rocked it ! I built a green house ( 12 X 16 ) and plumed the gutters into a 55 gal plastic barrel. I used a small solar panel from Harbor freight connected to a riding garden tractor mower battery and I used a 12v bilge pump for a boat as my pump for watering in my greenhouse and filling buckets for stuff outside. Works great.
Very fine video with close ups on plumbing fittings and complete explanation up one on your overkill rain system. Your attention to detail is phenomenal. A great deal of $ and time was spent on this project so I cannot see that you did this to use "free" water. Rainwater is however very good for your garden. Unless you have rain frequently in which case you might not need much water for your garden you will be needing a larger reservoir. Subscribed
Great explanation and step by step build. This solved the distance and pressure issue with rain barrels. Good choice for pump, as these transfer pumps came in 12vDC and 120vAC and commonly available.
You deserve more subscribers! That was one of the best presented, to the point, easy to follow and understand project videos I have seen in a long time. Thank you
Love it. The only thing to be cautious of is to ensure you don't block of flow downstream with it. Always allow water to flow through those types of pumps. Bad for the motor otherwise.
One way to get around that is to blow the line out with pressurized air and/or drip a little plumber's antifreeze in the line. Have to run the antifreeze out in the spring. Way better to put a drain in the line.
@@uhadonejob Compressed air blowout is nice when you need to occasionally water in the day but know you'll have a freeze at night. I'm planning on setting this up later in the year.
Wow. This is so smart to do My Dad used to use a clear coat waterproof barrier on the wood. They sell a non-toxic one. People with RV's might like this idea for their sinks and showers.
Very detailed video. I'd use a RV water pump. It's got a built-in pressure switch. Also, I suspect you might need a check valve on the city side to prevent contamination from the rainwater.
Low cost boat bilge pump with flost switches set up to transfer water to a higher mounted set of barrels Dutch Bucket connected.... Solar power the pump. Easy setup.
Yeah gravity is a good friend. Just raise the rain barrel in the first place. Why wast time and hundreds of dollars on the electric pump battery and pvc!
Nice approach. Good teaching style, I feel like I could do this. Minor suggestion: get a bigger rain barrel - you can get used IBC totes that are food grade - which means they formerly contained food like oil or syrup or something as opposed to some chemicals. They're like 275 gallons (1000 liters) and cost like $75. So, good deal. Instead of a 32 gallon trash can. Almost 10 times the volume. They'll fill up easily in a decent rain. Give you a little more capacity - for the work and PVC and pump already invested.
Great video and narration. I did something similar but I am fortunate to be able to house the pump and battery inside my shed. I also added solar panels like you mention mostly because there is no electricity near my garden/shed. I highly recommend that. Harbor freight has a kit with everything you need to power a shed including two lights. I have four 55 gal barrels linked together feeding the pump. They get rain water from the roof of the 10x10 shed. I’m always amazed at how quickly a little rain off that little roof fill the barrels! My next step is to run pvc pipe to drip irrigation hoses as you did and maybe a timer to run the whole thing. Overall a great way to water a garden.
Fantastic job! My girlfriend has been bugging me to make her one of these for a while now, but I hadn't yet decided how to do until I watched your video. I'm fairly fussy about what parts to use and after seeing what you used, I don't see me using anything different. You did a great job that produced results for practical use. I will show her this video and get at making it this summer. Thanks for sharing it!
Super video for folks to use rain water more effectively in their gardens. I have a very similar set up using four 275gal totes around my home and shed/poultry runs. One set up w/electric transfer pump that I connect to a timer to turn on the pump. I have the water lines connected to garden raised beds and into two season extending poly greenhouses. I also connected a 4 position timer manifolds I can control a "rotating" auto irrigation which works great for me. So the transfer pump operates on a schedule and the timer manifold irrigates 4 zones. I could modify to solar pretty easily but don't want to set up another system/panels due to space. I have a similar system set up in a 25ft poly tunnel that is all hydro and that's all solar (airstones/pumps) because the set up is stationary. There are two other zones - one a fruit orchard and another for perennial gardens that I have set up with drip tape irrigation lines and use a batter operated transfer pump that I can move around for those. Love your videos they're super informative!
Amazing video. You have given me the confidence to attempt a similar project (a little larger in scope) that someone was going to charge me $2200 to do. Thank you!
wow , fantastic video. Just beginning a homestead and invested in rain barrels for the first time. I was wondering on my way home from purchasing them about a pump? and came across your video. Explanations and instructions, you get a gold star. Thank you.
Nice video. Reminded me of a rain water cistern we had in an Australian farmhouse. Used it for drinking water, since the town water pipe was rusty iron. After a drought year, we decided to clean it out. Skeletons from dead snakes, goanas, bats, birds--and a few inches of droppings. Stick to beer, mate!
This is so well done! Just found your channel because I’d like to do a project like this myself. I appreciate your process with an emphasis on safety too. Nice call outs. A+++!!
Very interesting video. (Very well done, too by the way.) I took the output of my basement sump pump and filled a 55-gallon outdoor container. I used another sump pump in the collection container to pump the water through a garden hose to water my lawn and garden through a sprinkler. When the 55-gallon collection container water level got low the sump pump would shut off and not risk burning out. I bet had I used a transfer pump like yours would have given me significantly more pressure. I still could have used an independent sump pump float switch to shut off the pump when the water got low. Thanks again for the video.
Yes please, I would like to see about the solar hook-up. Oh, I see you have already done one. Going to watch it now. Thank you Robert. You are very talented.
Hi Green Tec, I love your creative gardening style, and yes I would love to see your solar energized pumping system to foolproof your whole garden. That would be very interesting to see. 🌱🌱🌱🌴🌴🌴📖🕯🕯🕯
Well done 👏! I'm surprised that those connection parts didn't come with the transfer pump and hose. As a novice, I would've had to go back to the store.
This was awesome. I love how fast you get into the details, and don’t play around. Good info on cutting and connecting PVC! That will actually help me move an AC line that is dripping onto my foundation. I love that you tested all those different watering methods because that’s good for some of us needing to water grass and other things aside from just the garden. Super awesome! Your garden looks beautiful by the way
This was nice. A quick point . . . an RV pump works by automatically turning on when the water pressure drops upstream. Just turning the faucet on would make an RV water pump work. I am about to start a water harvesting project, so this is helpful. Thanks.
Great Job! I'm not an expert either, and I wouldn't change a thing. I just started my first little garden this year with tomatoes and cucumbers. I've been watering mainly with city water but thanks to you and your video, I'm cutting off the city!!! BTW, once I saw you buy some of your tools from either pawn shops and/or garage sales, I knew me and you shared a lot in common-- doing projects efficiently and effectively without unneccessary overspending. I get a real satisfaction seeing that a little brain-power overcomes throwing money at everything. And your video editing is awsome!!! Great job, overall!!
That is absolutely awesome and labor intensive is an understatement. I would like to do something like that with solar but every time I begin mapping out a plan it becomes too complex to even start. Congrats to you to seeing it through.
Yes I too sometimes go through an analysis paralysis phase, but I've learned to just go for it, and learn and gain more experience along the way, even from the failures which I like to call steppingstones.
I added 32 solar panels to my home. 14kw system. I am putting in a manual generator and transfer switch now for 50amps f emergency service. enough to keep my furnace running and two freezers plus a few lights
I like to take some duct tape around both primer and cement sans for more stability. You should prime, glue, and put the pieces together with a TWIST. 90° is usually enough. Then hold.

I also found you because I’d like to do this project- many thanks and well done. You are undoubtedly more technically gifted than I am, but this is a tremendous help and a pleasure to watch.
Such a great, down-home presentation. Clear and comprehensive. Thank you
No problem. Thanks for watching :D
Great video. I patterned my set-up after yours. My pump is connected top 2 - IBC totes. I used a DC pump with a battery connected to a 20 watt solar panel and controller to kekep the battery charged. Works great.
Wow this was honest to goodness possibly the best how to/explaination videos I've ever seen pleaseeeee keep posting more, this was incredible
Thanks Joel!
That's awesome! A greenhouse is definitely something on my to-do list one day.
NICE!
SUGGESTION:
You should put some pavers on top of the pipe by the gate.
love seeing people who have an idea and make their idea come to life. good job!
Same here! Thanks David!
Great to hear Rick!
That is dope. I didn't realize the DC ones they sold could be this effective.
Great details - no wasted video rambling - Such a breath of fresh air - a helpful demystifying teaching - Thanks
You deserve more subscribers! That was one of the best presented, to the point, easy to follow and understand project videos I have seen in a long time. Thank you
😀 Great to hear! Thanks for the feedback.
Love it. The only thing to be cautious of is to ensure you don't block of flow downstream with it. Always allow water to flow through those types of pumps. Bad for the motor otherwise.
Be sure to have a valve at the lowest spot so you can drain during freezing weather. Nice setup!
Thanks, and thanks for sharing the tip.
good one!
When it freezes that PVC pipe is going to break and it will drain all over the place.
Hey Jerry, I agree on both points made. Thanks for sharing.
Love that you improvise and it works well I love it people like you makes me want to do the same and keep the earth clean
Great video! It has given me a few ideas for my garden. Your attention to detail is refreshing, thank you!
That is awesome and thanks for sharing your success and details! Always appreciated.
Aaaaw man, you are making it all proper and functional, showing me up with style.
That sounds awesome. Always glad to hear! Go for it.
Also my experience, overhead watering only invites fungal disease. your drip irrigation, or watering low is good :)
I've heard the same. Still a lot that I have to learn when it comes to gardening, but thanks for sharing your experience.
This is great info!
Wow that's awesome!
That was amazing! Thanks so much for making it easy to understand. Now, if I only lived where it rained regularly...😄
Amazing video. You have given me the confidence to attempt a similar project (a little larger in scope) that someone was going to charge me $2200 to do. Thank you!
Awesome, always great to hear! :D
Really well done video. Thanks for posting. I see a lot of people install rain barrels but not use the collected water because it's inconvenient.
Yeah, gravity just doesn't cut it.
Thanks for taking your time to show us how you did it. I love how you explain so much and take your time to help us understand!!!
Wow, amazing that was both informative and educational "dotting all the I's and Crossing all the T's" well done.
Glad it was helpful!
wow , fantastic video. Just beginning a homestead and invested in rain barrels for the first time. I was wondering on my way home from purchasing them about a pump? and came across your video. Explanations and instructions, you get a gold star. Thank you.
Awesome. Glad to hear it was helpful!
The step by step process of this video and your setup *Chef's Kiss* perfect!
Thanks :D
(Very well done, too by the way.)
I took the output of my basement sump pump and filled a 55-gallon outdoor container.
Nice setup Joe. Thanks for sharing also. I like how you are using your basement sump pump as a means to re-fill an outdoor container.
I've been chewing on how to do exactly something like this. Thanks for the bump forward with some ideas!
Yes please, I would like to see about the solar hook-up. Oh, I see you have already done one. Going to watch it now. Thank you Robert. You are very talented.
Thanks, and glad you found it!
I've been thinking of installing rain barrels and would love to explore this pump solution. Thanks for a great video!
Go for it!
This is one of the BEST and most usefully detailed videos I've ever seen on YT. AWESOME!!
Hi Green Tec, I love your creative gardening style, and yes I would love to see your solar energized pumping system to foolproof your whole garden. That would be very interesting to see. 🌱🌱🌱🌴🌴🌴📖🕯🕯🕯
This is excellent! You have a new subscriber!
Welcome aboard Ginger Willis :D
Awesome and impressive! Learning a lot about the different techniques to get the job done. Please keep producing your videos!
Thanks, will do!
Please, they are awesome!!
Man I love how clean and precise everything is
Well done 👏! I'm surprised that those connection parts didn't come with the transfer pump and hose. As a novice, I would've had to go back to the store.
Nice job, so neat I love that you took the extra time to make use of natural God given resources.
Thanks.
Well done in every respect. THANK YOU for being an inspiration.
Thanks Phil for the feedback, and I agree with the points made! :D
Then hold.
Yes! Absolutely I'd love to see it with solar panels!
Yes, I just watched like 4 or 5 videos looking for this info. Thank you! 🙂
Glad the info was helpful!
I am female and this is so helpful in details.
Great video Robert, having only seen it today, it's very timely since i'm in the middle of renovating my back yard and gardens. Thanks for putting more tools in my mental toolbox!
That's awesome, glad to be able to help.
Thanks for this video. You have a pleasant manner and explain things without getting bogged down in detail.
