Martin Short is one of the greatest all time comedians. He hit it out of the park when he came up with Jiminy Click. Funniest alter ego character in comedy.
"So you lie on top of her with that body." - Jerry The crew member exploding in the background right as he gets to the end of that sentence is priceless. Those who missed out on this show missed out on possibly the funniest show ever. Glick was such a genius character and it took the consummate skills of Martin Short to pull it off. Literally everything about this show was absolute genius.
The fact that he managed to not break character after Jerry said that is incredible. It almost seems like he covers his face as he scractches his nose to compose himself, it's a split second. You can tell the joke caught Martin off guard but he handled it like the legend he is.

I heard Jon Stewart say that George Carlin and Jerry Seinfeld were by far the best prepared comedians he'd ever seen. You can see that JS prepared for this and was ready to give as good as he got, or better.
Seinfeld couldn't stand for Short to get in zingers at his expense, and chose to go onto the offensive. He was funny - but it was über snarky Jerry. The interviews I enjoy the most are those who allow Short some room to maneuver on his own and then let him lead (Dreyfus, Mullally, Lovitz, Levy, O'Hara, etc.). Seinfeld is nobody's second fiddle. Ever.
Seinfeld just did what he said in the Seinfeld episode when he had a personal revelation, "make fairly obvious" observations. None of his attempted insults were clever, just seemed like he wanted to be noticed by speaking. His interview with Julia Louis-Dreyfus was much better as she plays along.
Glick: “and how have you kept the weight down?” Jerry: “I keep it down because I’ve been successful at what I wanted to do…” Glick: “Oh and what was that?” Absolutely genius improv burn
Jerry Seinfeld speaking extemporaneously is not an interesting person, he's not funny, he's arrogant and thinks he embodies the funniness that is actually Larry David's writing. In J-dominated Hollywood they are kings and it shows in their self absorption. Larry David, in a world that is right, would never have been put in front of a camera. He's awful.
Usually it doesn't work when the guest tries to upstage or even keep pace with Martin Short, but I think Seinfeld played it very well - better than anyone I've seen trying to keep up with this genius character.

Side note: I bet both always had the brutal upper hand in controlling unruly audiences during their standup days.

One of the closest times you’ll see Martin almost break character with laughter was when Jerry hit him with the “you lie on top of her” line. Martin’s hand stays near his mouth for the next 5 seconds trying not to openly laugh.
There's a moment right at the 3:25 mark, when you can see that Martin Short wants to laugh. It's right after Jerry tells him "so you lye on top of her with this body." And Short has to regroup himself. It's very subtle, but man is it funny! This is great comedy.

This is one of the best. The traded roasts going back and forth are gold. "So you are... kind of a _barnacle_ ... on the hull... of show-business." "(as jerry) whyyy... do people.... oh I didn't remember the rest but..." "I've never seen a shirt were the _collar_ ... goes straight up like that..." "Some people would say that the _eyes are dead_ ... and there's a nothingness there..." "So there's a person... that will... allow _you_ ... to lie on top of them... for 8 to 11 minutes... at least 4 times."
My favorite is when he does the Jerry impression. You can tell he's torn between trying to not react and actually thinking it's a pretty good impression.
It's great that these two comedy masters can do this in character ... Although we don't know how many retakes it took if one of them burst out laughing. The crew obviously has a difficult time not busting up. The edge definitely goes to Martin, but then he's perfected this act and Jerry is a guest so it makes sense he's funnier.
I think you have to give it to Seinfeld on points. After all, Jimney knew where he wanted to go with the interview, had planned his questions. JS was doing all his stuff off the cuff. But it was a great balance between the two. One of the better Glick interviews. Whatever happened to him?
Jerry fared a lot better than the other guests. Usually when they come out swinging they fall twice as hard, but Jerry prepared more material for this interview then he did for most of his comedy sets.

Man, these 2 comedians together in 1 room is Flawless. Martin Short (jiminy Glick) & Jerry Seinfield.
What a comedic gem this exchange was. What an understatement, too.
My favorite is when he does the Jerry impression. You can tell he's torn between trying to not react and actually thinking it's a pretty good impression.
It's great that these two comedy masters can do this in character ... Although we don't know how many retakes it took if one of them burst out laughing. The crew obviously has a difficult time not busting up. The edge definitely goes to Martin, but then he's perfected this act and Jerry is a guest so it makes sense he's funnier.
I think you have to give it to Seinfeld on points. After all, Jimney knew where he wanted to go with the interview, had planned his questions. JS was doing all his stuff off the cuff. But it was a great balance between the two. One of the better Glick interviews. Whatever happened to him?

Jerry fared a lot better than the other guests. Usually when they come out swinging they fall twice as hard, but Jerry prepared more material for this interview then he did for most of his comedy sets.
