  • OK, maybe I'm a bit TOO excited about this monopod, but after using a TON of them, this is my all-time favorite monopod, battle-tested at NAB.. It ticks all the boxes: ✅ Build quality ✅ Options ✅ Stable ✅ Design ✅ Good company. Apologies for the few glitches in the video - the Tech gods are playing with me this week. :) bit.ly/Subscri...
    #basicfilmmaker #monopod #iFootage
    This is NOT just another monopod!
    I met up with iFootage at the 2019 #NABShow, and Ian was kind enough to lend me one of their iFootage A180 Cobra II monopods - the aluminum version (they have both a carbon and aluminum version).
    My initial thoughts were, "OK, another fancy monopod. I'll check it out and return it when I'm done." I couldn't have been more wrong about this.
    It's not only a show stopper, literally 20 people stopped me to ask what I had at NAB, but is the best and most functional monopod I have ever used, and the price point is incredible.
    EVERYTHING on this unit screams high-quality and precision engineering, and you can tell these guys really thought everything through, from the o-rings on the slides, the smooth machined aluminum, the stainless springs and screws, the molded all around rubber footings, hard stops on the legs, patented quick release plate, the ability to make this a mini tripod in seconds, a 71 reach, and the list goes on and on.
    I HIGHLY recommend this if you're looking for an excellent monopod for your videos.

    *Yep! You can tell when I'm really excited about something, and this iFootage monopod is THE ONE for me. Apologies for the few glitches in the video - I think I made the Tech Gods mad. 😎 How's your monopod rate compared to this one? Any cool ways you use yours that are unique? Let me know in the comments! And, THANK YOU for subscribing to the channel and for your continued support!*

      I was going to comment on the audio glitches. I think we are all used to seeing clumsy jump-cuts on youtube, but the audio pops just need to be cross-faded out. Love the enthusiasm, lol!

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +3

      True that Daniel! I was going to either re-shoot or smooth out all the glitches, re-render and upload, but I ran out of time and I thought, what the hell. I ain't perfect, and people should see that. But yes, a crossfade would have been appropriate. The problem was the card was glitching, and hard cutting out the video and audio at the same time. I am doing a short video on how this happened, and how to avoid it. Thanks!!

    I agree completely! I keep the base in my bag at all times! Versatile enough for pretty much any situation where you need to get close to the ground. I work at a wedding hall on weekends and I see the monopod in use all the time. Best part is that it takes up no more space than my 100-400 lens!

    I have owned the carbon version since it was introduced! It is fantastic but I actually see in your model that they have made a small unadvertised improvement to it to address the only problem I have with it. They have put a small knurled edge to the red quick release locking rings. Mine is all smooth so having very dry hands I sometimes find it difficult to get a good grip on them as my hands slide off. A work around is to use wide rubber bands so no big deal! I also own their Mini jib, S1 slider plus their other Cobra strike monopod, all of which are of the highest quality. I have definitely become a fan boy! 😃🙏🏾

    I just purchased the carbon fiber version of this without realizing there were two different types of material lol. I almost canceled my order to purchase the aluminum, but ended up googling the difference between the material and learned carbon fiber is stronger. So it makes sense why it’s $30 more.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 года назад +2

      Yep. I was against the carbon fiber for a tripod, not monopod. I got one, and it’s freakin awesome. Live and learn. 😁

    You dog you. You finally got me. I've been toying with the idea getting a monopod for a while but couldn't justify it. I just put one into my cart on Amazon because I kept thinking about it since yesterday. You are now a richer man.

    I bought the shorter version specifically for use with my Ronin-S. Perfect combination! This is the best engineered piece of camera equipment I own, period. I also own the Sirui P-204SR P Series Monopod which was $169 and the Libec Hands-Free Monopod with Dual Base Video Head which was $259, both have major engineering and/or quality control issues. So not only is it the best, it is an amazing bargain price!

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +2

      Agreed. I've had way too many monopods to not realize these guys nailed it. :)

    • @builtwildnaylor1034
      @builtwildnaylor1034 5 лет назад +1

      The Sirui has quality control issues? I figured the Footage was a clone of the Sirui with smaller feet and lever locks instead of twist locks. Which is better (twist or lever) is opinion. The Footage is the same As the Sirui with removing the shaft and putting rubber or a spike on the end without the feet, I think.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      I don't have, and have never used the Sirui, so have no valid opinion. I think a new buy would be for replacing one that is of lower quality, or for someone who doesn't have one.

  • @bagery
    @bagery 5 лет назад +1

    I bought this last year for my huge Sigmas since I am unfortunately a tiny person. Couldn't bear the thought of lugging around a tripod and/or monopod. I researched for a solution that could fulfill both needs but was very disappointed with the high prices and mediocre reviews. Somehow I found this thing and it ticked off all my boxes. It is just an amazing piece of equipment. I could not keep my hands off of it, it's so well made. Absolute perfection. A very adequate review!

    You showed something I haven't seen in other videos. This monopod should hold my Sony ax700 without touching it. I do long footage of shows and performances. Sometimes I need to move from one place to another so I prefer a monopod. Obviously I'm not going to leave the camcorder standing on the monopod all the time. What I need is a few seconds to relax my hands or drink some water during filming. Thank you very much. (I'm using a translator to write)

I find having a RUclips channel really makes me know what I am talking about. For instance, I am doing a video on large mass storage drives for video creators, and it makes me do my research. I learn a lot. I suggest to anyone who has a new camera that the best way to learn it, is to do a video on it from top to bottom. So what if no one sees it, you'll end up like a ninja with that thing. And thanks for the appreciation - these comments mean a lot. Oh, and no, no tats. I see enough old people who were tatted earlier in life, and these get fugly - just wait until these kids grow older and their tats fold over themselves. :)

    You know I was waiting for someone to report some things at NAB and be smart enough to use a monopod. AND IT HAPPENED. As an alternative to a tripod a monopod is certainly a life saver. I've used them for concerts and for roaming around events and bought a couple of ifootage monopods a year or so ago. Very versatile and as you say solidly built. I really do love the CF version. The ingenious quick release is also really helpful for an event shooter. No need to bring a hi hat. Just detach the pole and plunk the camera head down. I assume you tried the Komodo head with the monopod. That does make tilting and panning a bit easier. Mind you I did not buy the head with my cobras. I simply have other heads that offer a bit more payload capacity. For my C300M2 I do prefer the Manfrotto monopod with head .. I do like the side mounting clip in option with the Manfrotto monopod. The Manfrotto is fairly similar to the iFootage cobras but it does lack the quick release and the reach of the cobras. I also like the foam padding on the cobra much better as well. It is much denser and less fatiguing I think although I have found it a bit slippery at times. The super long version is killer in getting shots up high ...way way up high. Great that you could scoop up a monopod. Next year maybe get a motion control slider. A bit pricey but worth its weight in gold.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      Yep, love this thing. Haven't tried the Komodo head, but interested in trying it. I am testing the manfrotto 701 HDV (they don't make it anymore, the idiots), and it works nicely. I briefly messed with the Carbon one at the show. Is it as stable fully extended as this one?

    • @dandeliontv946
      @dandeliontv946 5 лет назад +1

      @@BasicFilmmaker I have the C180 in CF version and it is pretty rigid. I have not tried it with the C300 because I do like the Manfrotto for that camera. As you demoed on the video...extending the monopod way above the crowd is a huge plus but not sure I want to be putting a heavy camera up there especially if you are extending it with your arms to get even higher. I'm not familiar with the 701 and would be curious to see if it was made in Italy or China. There are quite a number of Manfrotto heads actually made in China and they do sort of hide that by a stamp underneath the plate.
      By the way, I checked my bill from BH for this monopod from last year and the CF180 has actually dropped in price by $30 so it is definitely worth getting this year. But you cannot beat for free.

It says around 70,5 cm - but is that with the foot and the top and bottom screw thingy? Would love to have this in a hand luggage and that 55 cm of height (and a bit more if you place it right :)). It’s pretty easy...just pull down on the red part, and lift up on the center thing. I don’t think it involves physical strength. They machine these to very close tolerances, and yours may be very tight at first. With the mono pod only, practice pulling down on the slide, and removing the top a number of times, possibly twisting it a bit, and it should loosen it up after a bit. I decided I'm going to make a follow on video this weekend, as I am getting soooo many questions about this. Stay tuned. :)

    This looks great. How does it handle larger cameras and downward sag? With the Manfrotto MVMXPRO500US my C100 starts to slide down as I use it, the springs can't seem to lock firm enough for a whole day of shooting. These locks and springs look to be much more firm and durable.

      I haven't seen any downward sag, although it IS a monopod - supped to hold up to 18 pounds. Check out the mechanisms on your Manfrotto. I had a tripod that did this, and was able to use an allen wrench to tighten them up and it worked great.

    Their Strike one is good due to unique fast adjustment. This one can't match Sirui, unfortunately as our expirience goes.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      You mean the Sirui is better than this? If so, I'm interested. Can you tell me why? Thanks!

    • @personalview7388
      @personalview7388 5 лет назад +1

      Yes. It is lot of small things :-) Working with monopod it is exactly small things that make the day.
      One thing I want to get for my teams as B roll stuff is iFootage Strike monopods with quick adjustments. I tried such and it saves lot of time during such work.

      I own both! The Sirui is excellent too, wider and more stable leg spread , better case and the panning feature is unique. I would not say it is better, just different. I love them both for specific differing needs.😁🙏🏾

    Also, it looks like you've got some rendering glitches in the video. A really big one at 9:28.

      Yep. Bad fixes too. I left them in as I wanted to show what happens and why in tomorrows video. :)

    Great overview.
    Would be a great monopod/Tripod, but they blew it by not making the legs longer. They need to be longer so that you can use it as a Tripod with a full rig on top. With those short legs, it definitely isn't as stable as the Sirui monopod.
    The Sirui P325-SR (ruclips.net/video/_Um6ZOoC0yE/видео.html) is better IMO, but I do like the quick release function of the iFootage. Still, if you aren't using it as a tripod for interviews, which I use the Sirui for, it is pretty slick.

      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      Nice. I definitely like the flip extenders more than the twist ones I have on many monopods, but those LEGS are AWESOME! Makes me wonder if they could come up with some cheap and stable way to engineer an add-on for longer legs.

    Kevin,Did you get a chance to see what the difference was between the aluminum monopod and the carbon monopod?❤

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  4 года назад +2

      I haven’t. Most people commenting have been please with the carbon fiber. I’ll be checking out all their stuff and reporting on it at NAB this year in April.

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  5 лет назад +1

      Well, 71" is 5.91666666667 feet tall, call it 6 feet. I'll measure this later with a tape and include those dim's in the description, as many would like to know full height with minipod attached, without, and compressed length with minipod and without for determining if this would fit in their carry on luggage.

    How would I adapt my peak design capture plate to it?

    • @BasicFilmmaker
      @BasicFilmmaker  3 года назад +1

      Oy! No experience with the peak design plates. Remember you can put plates on top of plates. I use the SeaStars QR plates and attach them to the slide mechanism on a tripod QR plate.
