I suppose if you're a Jaffa warrior who's used to using Ring Platforms, the concept of a parachute would sound like utter suicide.
Jaffa1. The Tau'ri are surely undefeatable.
Jaffa 2. Be careful where you speak such blasphemy!
Jaffa 1. When entering battle they jump out of their flying craft from great heights, they do not use the rings.
Jaffa 2. That seems unwise.

It maybe apocryphal, but there is a story from World War II in which a British officer asks for volunteers from his Gurkha unit to jump out of the plane: he gets only a few hands raised, so puzzled, he asks what happened to legendary Gurkha bravery. Someone says to him, "they did not know they would be getting parachutes";)
XD
The version I heard was that they volunteered but asked for the plane to fly as low and slow as possible to lessen the chance of injury, before being told about parachutes.
Definitely apocryphal. From the start of WW II the British had an extensive training programme for paratroopers before their first jump in battle conditions.
To start with, they would do ground based training on how to safely exit the plane and how to land. Then they had a series of practice jumps (one contemporary account I read said his unit had 9 practice jumps before they were certified for a battlefield drop).
Sending untrained troops into a parachute drop over enemy territory would be insane. Assuming that they all operated their parachutes correctly, you would still get a high number of injuries from bad landings. Not only do you lose a soldier from your operation, your whole unit becomes less mobile as you take care of your wounded.
@@zarabada6125 "Assuming that they all operated their parachutes correctly, you would still get a high number of injuries from bad landings"
This. A lot of jump school is learning and committing to muscle memory how to land correctly. Landing is....a little more violent than it's portrayed on film. Especially if you're a bigger dude.
I heard they asked be dropped low to the ground, and over marshy terrain.
I'm laughing as i picture the filming of these scene...the plane on the ground, a fan blowing on them, and each taking turns jumping onto a air cushion.

"I said it will be easy! Not wise!"
Well, no one can say he lied. that was the most honest words from a skydiver.
Teal'c at the moment when they were discussing about jumping had a look very much like a soldier in my former army unit. In '03 while we were deployed to Iraq, we received a comp ride in a CH-47 Chinook helicopter as payment for a task we did for this aviation unit. This soldier was a 6'5", corn fed, hulk from Oklahoma of whom we took to calling "Big Country"... who despised flying. Everyone was just having a good 'ol time except for Big Country, he just sat there white knuckled. Then came the best part of the flight, something they called a Zero G Drop. The chopper ascended to an extremely high altitude then cut the engines. Everyone floated up from their seats for a few seconds, the pilot started the rotors again and we flew off just a 100 or so feet off the ground. Big Country was pretty white before the flight, he was now damn near transparent with a look on his face of utter terror. We all had good laugh at his expense after.
Well, from what you tell, I'd still give him credit for holding his own in an unpleasant situation (for him anyway) instead of chickening out.
@@Xentronium Yes, but we still gave him hell. Everyone messed with everyone else. Even our Captain and First Sergeant got involved with some of the shenanigans at times.

*Stargate SG-1* (Season 4, Episode 7: _Watergate_ )
The Russians have the second Earth Stargate (Gate Beta). While experimenting with it, it threw off the first Earth Stargate (Gate Alpha) and made both inoperable. The added danger is that the Russian gate is not closing, leaving its wormhole active. SG-1 and a Russian scientist will enter a remote Siberian facility to shut it down.

Carter and O'Neill would have jump training, probably the Russian too. But the odds of Teal'c and Daniel injuring themselves without any training seems reasonably likely in the best of circumstances... Let alone in a snow storm in Antartica.
I dunno, maybe Daniel has civilian jump experience? He seems a lot less hesitant at this than other SG adventures.
Daniel is an Archeologist. I wouldn't be surprised if he HASN'T gone parachuting.
Yah, I'm just going to assume that in the time they were having the gear put on it was explained to them what to do regarding flaring and what-not since there was a time jump skipping that...
Jackson absolutely has done it before..
Teal'c can tank most damage.. so he probably hit hard-real hard, but toughed through it and then healed
Yeah maybe Daniel has jumped before, but jumping safely with military gear is not the same as a civilian jump I imagine.
As someone who went through airborne school, it's a good thing Teal'c is superhuman and has a symbiote to heal him quick. If you've never done it before and land wrong using a non steerable chute you're gonna break something. Even then a staff sergeant I knew with 50+ jumps broke an ankle landing wrong. I got my spine compressed landing on incline. Not pretty.
experience doesnt ensure a safe landing ... stuff happens ... experience just mitigates the bad effects ...
You think this is a bad idea Teal'c? Just wait until we figure out jetkpacks from reverse engineered technology, and pair it with the supersoldier gauntlets.
Suit disengages mid-flight xD
Honestly thought it was a bit of a shame they didn't use those ever again. They seemed to last a decent bit and would've been handy when fighting the abomination warriors of Anubis.
Honestly, after a couple of seasons, they could even have worked out a way to make them harder to resist... like using medicines that impair the immune system, like prednisone

Clearly O'Neil is not Riker.
It took 21 seconds for the first person to jump after the gear was deployed, and it took another 20 seconds for O'Neil (last man out) to jump after Marina Sirtis.
This means that Marina would be nearly a mile from where the gear landed and O'Neil would be nearly as far away from Marina. Over snowing mountainous terrain, I guess it's a good thing she made arrangements in case they got separated.
There is a reason when they do real combat jumps like this, everyone goes out as quickly as possible. When you're moving at over 100 knots, you are covering MANY feet per second.
Really laying it on thick eh? It's a television series bud i think they did well all things considered, so you can take your attitude and shove it back where you found it.

funnyguy.. isn't fun.
So you wouldn't find it a challenge to find mistakes that are hard to pick out? Or do you just find it offensive to have mistakes pointed out?
Oh yea, I get what your saying, and I understand.
In an episode of Battlestar Galactica they jumped the ship near a planet with zero orbital velocity. As the ship fell through the atmosphere it launched it's fighters then jumped away before hitting the ground.
The science advisor to the show said it was completely 100% impossible to pull off a maneuver like that. The ship would just break up, because at those kinds of speeds the air would behave more like a solid than a gas. The science guy said to do it anyway because it would be very cool. It was.
Sometimes you just have to do the impossible for more action or drama. It is fiction after all. The entire story line is a "lie".
I haven't seen this episode. I would hope there is a scene after they jump of Jack talking to Teal'c
Jack: There, how was that?
Teal'c: I would like to do it again O'Neill
For all the technology of the Goa'uld, I am pretty sure they missed on something as basic as the parachute.
Why? All they have ever seen are ring platforms and shuttle craft which don't have ejection seats either due to them being actually capable of taking a pretty severe crash landing.
A Goa'uld may understand it, but a Jaffa has never trained for or considered such a thing.
well they used ring transporters, to get to a surface of a planet, no need for a cumbersome and time consuming parachute.
To be fair, the Goa'uld rarely invent anything. 99.9% of everything they use is scavenged off of everyone else. Parachutes don't last long enough to be scavenged off of dead races, rotting away too quickly, and the still living ones either aren't advanced enough, or have avoided being conquered.
well. Even if they had them they haven't used them in thousands of years. Show a modern human a simple agricultural or technical tool from the Bronze Age and you have a good chance people won't be able to identify its use.
he was utilising a device that can only be confirmed functional or a lemon after putting yourself in a position of extreme danger (free fall) that contains no technological capabilities whatsoever.
put simply your expecting to be saved by a bedsheet
They have a base with portal to other planets and they KNOW there are hostiles on other side and entire base has personnel numbering just 47. Given some of those have to be science and support staff, I shudder to think how many guards they had. No wonder the base was overrun. SGC is also a secret and they have a literal mountain of people with guns to keep any danger from getting off base. You do know why they gave her that line right?
@@davincent98 I mean I didn't until I read the comments of this video.
