Wow! This is a really great video! So many of these types of videos are full of people talking for almost half of them, you got straight to the music, I really appreciate this, and I've made a decision to go ahead and get the BUS COMP. Again, great video. 🙏🏾

Here is a funny thing. When I got out of engineering college in the late 1970s I got a job at dbx working for David Blackmer. I was tasked with testing and reworking some of the compressors that were used in pro studios. The funny thing is the qualities that made these compressors famous (years later) were the qualities Dave was trying to fix. So, you never know what the future holds for Warm Audio. Keep an open mind.
It seems like so many people have golden ears. I would love to see them in a blind audition. Thank you for the video! I would like Wesaudio in the battle here.
I love when people say that because at the end of the day thats what we do right? We have golden ears cause if you cant hear the difference between lets say slowing down the release on a compressor or speeding up the attack then you are really hindering your skills. Or even hearing eq moves you need to make, or hearing the subtle difference between at -1 or -2db cut. We make small adjustments all the time to make the overall track sound better. If you cant hear small difference and nuances then mixing and mastering music probably isnt the best thing to get into.

Preferred the Warm on the singer-songwriter track. It has a nice sound. The SSL is ultra clean, not much of a sound really, other than the compression action.
The Warm seems like a great value and our ears get used to whatever we get familiar with. But on that vocal track the SSL sounds clearer, cleaner, more transparent. They both sound nice though.
Jake Burton the warm had a hpf that allows low end to go through the sidechain without affecting the compression circuit. More low end passes through without being squashed. It may come across as mud in this example bcause i didnt have a ton of time to audition settings but its a really nice feature to have.
The SSL sounds amazing, the WARM sounds fantastic. BUT!!! the SSL is nearly four times the price! Plus you'll need to have a 500 series rack unit for the SSL! This is a hard one for me! if you are a pro mastering engineer the SSL is where you want to be, it's fully amazing. HOWEVER if you are semi-pro or just starting up with mastering having the WARM will definitely make life easier and be softer on the wallet.
Trust me , with the warm you can mastering like a pro without problem , the difference between this two is the character , not the quality and in this price range of Warm audio , you get the industry standard quality analog sound , warm is definitely a winner.
Got mine last week and I’m super glad I purchased it. Definitely added much needed life on my mix-bus and wile tracking drums individually as well as my hardsynths. Outstanding video. Subbed.
The SSL really does just present another level of quality above any hardware or software copies… the famous “snap” sure, but also 3 dimensional audio quality, no loss in body, everything is “glued” but somehow everything still feels “defined” rather than “melted together” like the Warm Audio does here... the signals get muddy. Could be charming if you’re looking for that. I hate to say it but credit where credit is due… SSL still owns that sound. Sounds incredible. Sounds like a record. Just my opinion regarding this specific tool.
@JDS music I love the color or "mojo" the bus comp adds. It thickens audio sources out with certain settings..It's worth the price point. I was looking at the Louder than Liftoff Silver Bullet as well. Funny Thing, I purchased a IGS Tube core 3u for around $2000 and the warm audio Sounds way better. I returned the tubecore lol.
When you close your eyes the gear really doesn't matter, ....beautiful music!....but of course it could sound better. For the individual tracks yeah big difference.
Bummer. Preferred the SSL on every example, even with the limited controls. Way more cohesion and transient punch. Warm doesn't sound like it was doing a whole lot except make the mix muddy. I saw that you didn't have the hpf engaged though but I wasn't hearing much snap/punch like when the SSL was engaged. I thought the Warm sounded okay on the punk mix. Same thing like their other compressors, just not quite there imo.
It's amazing the life both of these give in 2 different ways. Love them both. On the drums I really liked both but the SSL had some serious mojo. Any chance you've tried the Warm on mono signals? I'm curious how it does and what it might be compared to. Great video.
I hold out hope each time a new Warm piece comes out and i’ve yet to be blown away. The Warm seems a better instrument group compressor than 2 buss. The SSL brings mix elements closer to the ear effortlessly. The Warm just colored the sound. From a price standpoint its apples to oranges, but as in most cases you get what you pay for. Great comparison..
I have some WA stuff. I really did not "get it" until I used it in mixes. Soloing any device is useless (unless you ONLY record a solo'ed track). It is in the mix that any device either is great, good or crap. You have to use it in your studio. RUclips videos don't do justice to many devices.
I had an issue plagued WA76. Was never blown away by it. As far as what you can hear in a RUclips video, there are clear differences in the two units that are readily apparent. The compressor overshoots in the WA comp doesn’t suit heavy transient laden material. The warm does a have a widening effect that the SSL does not. For these reasons i’d rather relegate the WA comp to instrument groups that are hard panned. It should make a solid guitar or synth comp. For 2bus duties there are probably better choices in the price range. Could you use this on a mix, sure. But offerings by TK Audio, Audioscape, Stam, Heritage Audio can be had used for as much or slightly more as the WA and would give better performance.
I’m not familiar with the music but the 500 series ssl comp does not really sound like the one I had in my 9k. Warm sounds insane. Love that company. I bought the XLogic G Series - The Compresso it’s on it way to my studio now. I’m gunna get that warm us it too it that good.
SSL wins every time attitude, character and natural sounding! Remains with clarity even when the mixes get really busy as a pose to the warm audio. The Warm is audio is a good for its price, we all want to believe somewhere in our thoughts that something a lot cheaper is better and can compare. In most cases the SSL Bus compressor wins in facts. But maybe not in preference for some people. I think the Alan smart C2 gives the SSL a good challenge and that's hardly surprising as he was engineer at SSL for many years.
It sounds great, as we all expected. Very little differences to the SSL. But if you compare the townhouse bus compressor by brainworxs with the warm audio, the townhouse plugin sounds a tick better. Don't be biased by the tactile feeling of an analog unit with it's knobs. The townhouse blew me away from the first second I heard it. Give it a try if you want to save 750 Euro and above.
Townhouse is OK, but as with plugins-- it's the surgical manner that they do things that has an audibly displeasing effect. The pumping action of an analog unit has a musical quality that plug-ins can't achieve, imo. Plug-ins have come far though!

Very interesting. I found similar results with my SSL6. Clean SSL and the WA is a nice unit as well pushing more on the "warming effect". It does have its own colour that is of course a plus or negative depending on your ears and what you are aiming at achieving.
Well, I'm not sure exactly what everyone else is hearing here, but through my headphones the WA has a depth of richness that the DBX is just missing. I'm very well aware of the extensive measures that WA has went to, to create something extraordinary, and this is clearly revealing that to me here.
Pretty good stuff, to my ear the SSL just way more tight and punchy, but the Warm has a really nice character to it, doesn’t really sound like it’s doing that SSL glue thing though, it’s just louder, running a little too much makeup gain on the Warm… Both are nice, and the price of the SSL I’ll make you sick it should be good for $4400…
The engage transformers button on the WA stereo bus comp really works well for intimate acoustic tracks like this. However, I'm convinced that the SSL handles the transients better. It was really noticeable on the attack of that guitar. The knobs on the SSL aren't stepped, right?
Sorry, it was hard for me to make a practical judgment due the mids being too harsh for me to send through a bus compressor only to add more gain resulting in an overbaked sound in the mid range. Nonetheless, SSL is king for a reason. They are not the ones cloning someone else's gear design, lol. Thanks for taking the time to present this.
To me the SSL is not only the better choice but unless you plan on buying 5 of these (you might for your busses or stems) but if you needed just 1 it’s also the better bargain. Buying the Warm Audio only to plan to replace it and eventually get the SSL is just wasting time and money and the hassle of selling the WA (unless you’ll use it for something else). How much extra time will it really take most people to get the SSL vs just getting the WA? 2-4 months? I’ve personally been happiest buying the right thing the first time rather than trying to cover it with the budget version I’ll eventually replace especially when the difference isn’t multi-thousands.
I disagree. The difference doesn't justify the price tag, not at all. I am always for the better quality, I own 2 Dangerous Music pieces for example, but here there is no difference in quality, and the price difference is enormous. Big time the WARM Audio
It's an easy choice to make if you can afford the difference. Many people are just scraping by and looking to improve while staying on a budget. The price difference is easily a month's rent or more.
Let's be honest ...SSL just sounds better. It is what it is. I have the Warm unit and it does sound OK for the money. SSL just simply sounds better to me. There is a reason so many manufacturers clone SSL products....because they sound great! I'm not a SSL fan boy I just acknowledge the real. If you have the money, get the best thing.
There's a tiny increase in the overall sound compared to the warm audio... money wise you would think it's not worth spending 3 times more for a little bit of a better sound... but that little bit is the diffrence of what makes a really good track.... the money is worth it for the SSL, but you're not getting something rubbish with the warm audio... if I get the wrm audio, the idea would be to up grade at some point... and then the warm audio would find welcome home on a bus... for matiral to huge other parts meant to stand out
Came here cus i wanted to like the warm .. i mean its not bad.. but to coloured not what u want from a mastering / mixbuscomp. Alot of people here be like its so warm.. i call that muddy.. not warm. Came here cus i need to make a decision SSL Fusion and a warm or the SSL bus+ ... think im going for the bus+
Warm sounds good on acoustic. But having a lunchbox makes me still want the SSL. But there are far more cheaper options in the 500 series. Not as cheap as warm. But around 1k or so.
The warm is great....I’d probably want the SSL if money wasn’t an object but the warm was pleasing too. How can I find that song let it die to download/buy?
Hmmm are you overdriving your return bus for the Warm Audio? I just kept hearing nastry distorsion with the Warm, for instance at 1:50 and 4:12. I hope it's not lack of headroom in the comp because I've ordered one!
Do you have the Dynaudio BM15a and the Adam a77x? If you have time, would you explain why you have both please? I have the BM15a and I was thinking of changing to the Adams. I'd love to know your thoughts! Thanks, Alex
Very good video, thanks a lot. At some point you're turning off the comp (any of them) and quickly turning it back on... Seems like it sounds so much better with the compression that you're like "no way, I'm turning this back on". At least that's the feeling I had when watching, I felt I wanted to turn it back on everytime you're turning it off lol :)
Care to elaborate? Not targeted at OP but A bit tired of those random "sounds better" type of comments. Feeling the differences between VCA-based compressors is not something you can randomly "get" nor is it anything that obvious. "Clearly sounds better" - Yeah, right. I bet a quick listen to any of the mixes of these overnight sound experts would prove their ears are not as fine tuned as what they'd have us believe 👍 Maybe a good principle could be: If most people don't recognise your mixes as sounding outstanding, please think twice before asserting how good anything sounds
Stam Audio sa4000 Mk2 is the closest to the SSL sound unfortunately they are out of stock they made 19 units handmade and who knows if we will get them in the future it completely defeats the warm audio, the audioescape.
Thanks for the a/b. I like both. SSL is classic, but Warm for the price adding serious analog stamp, would maybe use it a little more judiciously than in the vid They do different things so if I could only have 1 I'd take the SSL, That being said for $699 how can you pass up the Warm 2 buss

The engage transformers button on the WA stereo bus comp really works well for intimate acoustic tracks like this. However, I'm convinced that the SSL handles the transients better. It was really noticeable on the attack of that guitar. The knobs on the SSL aren't stepped, right?
The ratio, attack, and release are stepped. Only the threshold and make up gain are continuously variable.
You have to match the output gain.
Have you tried the SA4000mk2 by Stam Audio? if Yes what's your opinion and which ssl clone do you think is Best!!!
Might agree if the SSL had the HPF to bypass lower frequencies.
The song at 1:00 is so amazing. Where can I buy it?
Let's be honest ...SSL just sounds better. It is what it is. I have the Warm unit and it does sound OK for the money. SSL just simply sounds better to me. There is a reason so many manufacturers clone SSL products....because they sound great! I'm not a SSL fan boy I just acknowledge the real. If you have the money, get the best thing.
The SSL one clearly sounds better, but honestly doesn’t sound $1500 better to me. Warm makes great budget stuff
Said the overnight sound expert whose mixes would probably have us run for our lives. I guess Thanks for the input anyway
Yea SSL definitely sounds better. That's funny because when I got my hands on the Warm I felt the same way. It just didn't have the it factor
Are there any links or a way to hear more of the song/artist Michael Morgan and the song you used?
Seriously I want this song, such good lyrics and just sounds rad overall
one of the few songs i've ever heard on a demo video where i've actually wanted to listen to it lol
I like Warm and bigness on Warm but... SSL its only amaizing (the Punch and Glue)
There's a tiny increase in the overall sound compared to the warm audio... money wise you would think it's not worth spending 3 times more for a little bit of a better sound... but that little bit is the diffrence of what makes a really good track.... the money is worth it for the SSL, but you're not getting something rubbish with the warm audio... if I get the wrm audio, the idea would be to up grade at some point... and then the warm audio would find welcome home on a bus... for matiral to huge other parts meant to stand out
definitely removes the blanket over the mix ~ I like the warm better
Warm Audio is dope!!!
No competition ! SSl wipes floor with it. Warm audio throwing LM/M bump on everything.
The warm sounds better for punk . More dirty and more balls on drums and guitars . The ssl on punk sounds so 90s punk .
Lol nothings as cheap as warm, lowest gear in the game IMO.
ssl ....best
Great video but I would have loved to hear the warm vs the ssl without the transformers engaged longer so we could hear how the vca stand up
ok im getting one...cool vid thanks
The warm is great....I’d probably want the SSL if money wasn’t an object but the warm was pleasing too. How can I find that song let it die to download/buy?
The warm audio has more width than the ssl
Hmmm are you overdriving your return bus for the Warm Audio? I just kept hearing nastry distorsion with the Warm, for instance at 1:50 and 4:12. I hope it's not lack of headroom in the comp because I've ordered one!
Yes - Did you end up finding the answer Mr Rodent :) ?
Can’t wait to get mine!
Not a apples to apples comparison IMO , should have either both rack units or either equal 500 series .
Seems to me that the Warm Audio unit is adding much more headroom or were the mixes not level matched?
Do you have the Dynaudio BM15a and the Adam a77x? If you have time, would you explain why you have both please? I have the BM15a and I was thinking of changing to the Adams. I'd love to know your thoughts! Thanks, Alex
The SSL is so much cleaner, punchier and transparent. The warm adds a low mid. For the price the warm is ok.
can the warm audio be connected to pc and compress digital sounds in the daw?
Hi. Is this compressor similar to the old dbx 160 ? Thanks a lot..
Get the audio scape g bus compressor
does this only apply to busses?
Very good video, thanks a lot.
At some point you're turning off the comp (any of them) and quickly turning it back on... Seems like it sounds so much better with the compression that you're like "no way, I'm turning this back on". At least that's the feeling I had when watching, I felt I wanted to turn it back on everytime you're turning it off lol :)
The last song is good
Care to elaborate? Not targeted at OP but A bit tired of those random "sounds better" type of comments. Feeling the differences between VCA-based compressors is not something you can randomly "get" nor is it anything that obvious. "Clearly sounds better" - Yeah, right. I bet a quick listen to any of the mixes of these overnight sound experts would prove their ears are not as fine tuned as what they'd have us believe 👍 Maybe a good principle could be: If most people don't recognise your mixes as sounding outstanding, please think twice before asserting how good anything sounds
Stam Audio sa4000 Mk2 is the closest to the SSL sound unfortunately they are out of stock they made 19 units handmade and who knows if we will get them in the future it completely defeats the warm audio, the audioescape.
you didnt shoot out anything, the warm audio transformer was engaged EVERY TIME!!!!
just curious how do your prefer to send your tracks from your daw into the side chain input of this compressor ?
What's your verdict between two 😊
AlexEMusic the warm is waaay better. more flexible with the hpf and switchable transformers.
@@ShredShed Just bought one because of this video
Leisure Muffin nice!! Warm did a killer job with this
@@ShredShed Such a wide and warming, to the face sound, love it!
Thanks for the a/b. I like both. SSL is classic, but Warm for the price adding serious analog stamp, would maybe use it a little more judiciously than in the vid
They do different things so if I could only have 1 I'd take the SSL, That being said for $699 how can you pass up the Warm 2 buss
SSL sure is transparent!
