    One of the best buss comp shootouts I've seen! First the compressed drums, then compressed drums within the mix and lastly compressed full mix, while comparing with the raw mix throughout! Excellent! I believe, for this song, the SSL sounds the smoothest and most balanced, the Dangerous was the cleanest and most open, and I was very impressed by the TK Audio BC1 THD which is close to the big boys and considering the price that's pretty amazing! I don't think the Overstayer suited this song, the kick was too big and punchy, and the Warm felt a little dull to me, but that could be due to the engaged transformer. They're all good, but for the money, I think the BC1 THD is the winner!

    Cool to hear what these different compressors are capable of 🔥
    It’s not an Apples to Apples comparison when there is different attacks , ratios & thresholds being used on several of the compressors.
    To truly compare you could use a test tone/ pink noise to set up the comps to trigger the same amount of compression w/ the same ratio.
    Using the same ratio on each comp is very important b/c when you change the ratio it changes the knee of the compressor resulting in more compression/ gain reduction.
    I really liked the Dangerous, TK did something weird to the vocals on the full mix. Warm seemed to enhance the low mid made the kick drum a little tubby but I was kinda surprised how well it did, liked it better than TK for sure. Overstayer had the most vintage analog colored sound, slightly rolled off top, full low end, really made the bottom octave of the kick drum come out on the drum mix. SSL didn’t stand out to me for some reason, will have to revisit it.

    The TK-1 keeps the same level of stereo image as the SSL and OverStayer, but the Warm audio smears the stereo image. Listen to the cymbals and upper register. It is just a cloud with the Warm, but the others seem to keep a nice open clear stereo image.

    Man they’re all good. Overstayer is the fullest and roundest. TK had a great punchy mid thing goin’ on. But the Dangerous…it all felt complete. Hi-fi. Clarity in the lows, mids and highs. Honestly I wouldn’t poo poo that Warm either. For the money it’s killer

    What am I missing here? I listened to this video once at Vintage king' site (mainly the full mix comparisons) and thought the results were shockingly different and immediately obvious... I went to RUclips to look at the comments and it's like a complete 180 from what I heard! To my ears the Warm and SSL sounded great with this material, I could hear what the TK was doing, but was on the fence about whether i liked it, the Dangerous was just "meh" and added nothing special for me while the Overstayer made everything sound worse and somewhat "emptier." It was like the stereo image collapsed inward, high end dropped and there was no excitement or pumping with those last two units- but all of the recent comments seem to be praising the Overstayer and Dangerous. As an engineer, I'm a product of mixing on large format consoles and VERY used to the sound of an SSL bus comp strapped across the mix... maybe my ears and brain are just stuck in the 90's and 2000's.

  • @nickrobinson2276
    @nickrobinson2276 4 года назад +9

    SSL sounded a little more "open" across the entire mix compared to the Warm. This could be the result of having the transformers engaged on the Warm giving a more "round" sound with a lazier transient response. The Dangerous had more "vibe" across the mix. So subtle and subjective though. I would be happy with any of these across my mixbus.

  • @DDPAV
    @DDPAV 3 года назад +2

    No fan of Warm audio but I recently had the bus comp in the studio for a mix I was doing. It ended up being my choice for the final mix with the transformer engage- I was beyond surprised. The client came in and I gave him a listen between several bus comps and he picked the Manley Varimu on the bus (Hardware unit). Just goes to show there's no "one is perfect" and price doesn't dictated what is best for a particular song/artist/producer. The next project picked the WesAudio Dione on the bus.... thank god for choices.......

    Damn the TK seems so much brighter and forward to me. Dig it! The Ssl is natural, but not that exciting. I've tried the SSL 500 and the Overstayer and the Smart C1, which is where I landed. The C1 (sadly not included here) has the SSL vibe with more grit and punch that the SSL 500 series. It's the one if your looking for classic SSL imho. THANKS VK!

    Transparency to Color = TK, SSL, Warm, Dangerous, Overstayer. The TK is very clean and works everywhere but I don't think they have the THD button engaged? The SSL has the classic SSL upper-mid thing, good punch, and sounds like records you have heard. The Warm is a great value and adds some (no pun intended) warmth. The Dangerous would sound great crushing room mics, on the Mix, and as far as I can tell is the only compressor in the shootout that can be used in dual mono. But, the Overstayer wins the mojo contest.

  • @DanielGruszka
    @DanielGruszka 4 года назад +24

    Dangerous and Overstayer had most vibe for sure, thick rich sound. SSL sounded thin to me, not a fan of that sound. Warm and TK are decent for the price point.

  • @PhilippBeesen
    @PhilippBeesen 4 года назад +3

    It's very interesting this video. When you especially hear to the part "... comin home tonight" minute 4:10 on the ssl and minute 4:48 on the dangerous you can hear the sound of the "comin" is much sharper on the dangerous and more agressive. The ssl sound still open and wide. The Warm audio and the tk are quite similar they sound more compressed than the others not so open. The overstrayer in my opinion let the snare and hihat sound not so bright anymore. Can be an interesting thing to make something more smooth but for sure this machine won't work on a mixbus for every song. In my opinion the SSL is doing the job right here it sounds musical to my ears and keeps the sound of the mix transparent and naturally open.

    Ssl G comp man phew and dangerous bus!!

  • @theclaverman
    @theclaverman 8 месяцев назад

    This is what I´m hearing when engaged on the full mix:
    I surprisingly liked the Warm best at the drums, as it gave a lot of body to the snare with the transformers engaged. But to me, the Warm somewhat fails (only slightly) to glue the whole mix together and it seems like it was placing the snare slightly in front of the vocals, almost making the snare the dominant track in the mix. And I didn't like that.
    The SSl....well it is the SSL. Glue, glue and some more glue and then some punch. To me this was the winner. I don´t know what voodoo SSL have incorporated into the G-bus but everything just sits in place very nicely in place.
    In this shootout I'll give the second place to Dangerous, as it also sounds really darn good and is probably a lot more flexible than the G-bus.
    That said all of them is more than capable of doing the job (we are splitting hairs) , and I'll have to admit that if money are a concern the Warm will give you some serious bang for the buck.

  • @DeadlyMixKrew
    @DeadlyMixKrew 3 года назад +2

    The overstayed would be nice for dirty Wu-Tang RZA style drums. The Dangerous would be nice for a general comp during the mix. The Warm adds a nice "bump" to the kick that might also work on a track channel or maybe even tracking. The TK is thin and airy almost like a plugin. Too transparent. And the SSL (as one expects) sounds like a polished and ready to release track.
    I'm disappointed because TK has some nice added features and a 500 series version that would take up no more room than the SSL and save money in the process. It's looking like my console is gonna be getting an SSL.

    Since I’d most likely be using a bus compressor for the entire bus mix, I’m speaking in context of that. So I really like the Warm Audio and Overstayer for the huge dimension and space it gave the entire mix (but I have to choose the WA right now because I’m in the beginning stages and can afford that). The SSL was too clean for my taste, the TK was too colored, and the Dangerous had even way more too much color for me.

    The warm was the dullest. The dangerous sounds amazing 👏...but different. Not sure it's a VCA comp, I think it's a vari mu so the sound would obviously differ. On the full mix when the singer holds the word home...u really hear each compressor in action. I wanted the warm to sound better I really did. 😕

  • @greenenoiseaudio
    @greenenoiseaudio 4 года назад +2

    The Warm seemed to consistently have the fastest attack, sometimes significantly so, 1ms in comparison to 30ms on the SSL I believe. Given that they're in the same family of compressor does this indicate that the action of the attack is significantly slower than others? I've felt this comp could be useful as a parallel on drum bus and probably still is but maybe it's attack times have less versatility in this regard.

    Definitely like the Overstayer. The bottom end was bigger and still well defined, thick mids, nice highs.
    Didn't care for the Warm, did nothing I would like to use in a mix.
    The SSL ruined the low end but did something interesting to the vocals. Nice surprise, as I wouldn't consider myself a, SSL fanboy. So maybe on a vocal bus.
    The TK also worked well on the vocals I thought, and worked ok on the drums.
    The Dangerous felt cleaner, but not in a surgical way, just more natural... The instruments sounded more like themselves, which one may or may not want.
    If I were in the market for bus compressors, and these were my options, I would think "Overstayer for character, Dangerous for less intrusive compression/limiting.

    I've just bought the Warm and I love it so far (it's my first outboard bus comp), but probably like the SSL best here, it's the most open in the upper frequencies, but they all do a decent job. I think the Overstayer is a little too bottom-heavy for this track, the Dangerous has a great sheen to it, but seems like it's robbing the low end a little. The Warm is definitely a step up form plugins I compared it to the UAD SSL MKII and it treats the transients nicer and has that analogue tone in comparison.

    They all did the job. Only the overstayer sounded darker. Warm did the job, but SSL was a tad more snappier. Tk was clear. Dangerous was natural, but not as snappy as the SSL and not as clear sounding as the TK, but just a different flavor. At the end of the day, the song matters more than which one of these compressors was used.

But the Dangerous is so 4k/HD or whatever that it's a must on a mix just for that reason alone! It has that special je ne sais quoi! That Overstayer would be so wicked on just snares, and distorted guitars, or anything that has grit to it! Between those 3 compressors you can get whatever you need for compression tones! If you can't get it on those 3 compressors, you just can't get it period!

Too dense and thick. Overstayer has urgency but can sound taxing after sometime. TK was hallow and cavernous and featureless. Warm Audio was comparable to the TK.
