Overall, on my calibrated studio monitors, the low end of the SSL unit had more oomph. Warm Audio unit was a bit thinner, though as wide as the SSL. The plugin was sounding weird on guitars and full mix. It sounded like depth and width were lost compared to SSL and WA. Thanks for this great video guys!
I’m not currently listening on my monitors, so I can’t comment on the lowend. But I can hear a shift in the mids on the warm vs the ssl, not in a better or worse. But I 100% agree on the lack of width with the plugin. I feel the warm is a great option for the price range.
The SSL pushes miss forward and has a tighter bottom end.& a touch more glue. The Warm sounds pretty damn good, ssl wins but let’s be clear the price difference in Canada is over $2K more for the SSL so it’s not even in the same league price wise and what the Warm does is fantastic. I don’t think you can beat the warm for that, it’s kind of in a class of its own. The plug-in loses all 3d compared to the outboard conps. Outboard sounds way better imo. Awesome video. Thanks.
Personal observations: WA is the widest sounding and colors the sound a tiny bit. SSL is definitely tighter and more sterile, than WA, but has narrower mids. The plugin is actually pretty underwhelming imho. Compared to hardware units it has the right compression envelope, but it significantly collapses the stereo field and outright sounds muddy - i would say it fails at its role as a stereo bus compressor. I wonder how "The Glue" by Cytomic would compare to the UAD plugin. The WA sounds very pleasing to me, to be honest way more fun than the actual SSL. That makes me really happy because i want to get it sometime in the future.
Thank you for the great video. Finally a professional review by people who know what they are doing. I think the warm audio sounds pretty good. a bit shy on the low end and a bit cleaner on the comperession. I read somewhere that it is not an exact clone of the SSL. The SSL sounded best and more like the real deal. I used one on a SSL G console. they sound very close. But for the money you can't go wrong with the warm audio. Maybe of few knobs tweaks and they will sound even close to each other.
The warm audio sounds softer on the left channel, compared to the ssl, as it was s bass freq drop. Maybe it was a cabling issue or a AD calibration. The plugin sound good but not so large as the two units.
Hey La Fucina Music, thanks for your Comment! We used the same cables and channels and switched both devices after every take so both run through the same desk channels und interface channels. We double checked it, probobaly the desk does some things to that. But of course the plugin is nice, but i wouldn´t use it for a professional master in the master bus i think. Have a nice weekend and stay healthy!
Great comparison! I think I like the warm audio on the guitars just a little better, as a preference of tone, it sounds a bit rounder overall, the SSL has more natural punch and clarity though. And the SSL really let the low body of the kick and snare through very well, and it really shines on the mixbus bringing clarity from lows to highs, the warm audio very good too. The UAD always sounded more narrow and like the my speakers had a thin blanket over it, as you say it doesn't sound bad, it gives you a great understanding and feel for what this compressor is supposed to do, but it doesn't compare.
Interesting comparison, anyone else think the the real differences were between the both hard pieces against the Plugin? I felt that the plugin was way less transparent... had to try on multiple speaker sources too...
For me the SSL had more mids "in your face" while the Warm was smoother in general. The UAD as a bit of deception here. For 699 U$D it's nor brainer/ Vielen Danke guys!
On the drum buds I preferred the SSL. But guitar and overall mix the warm is a little different but holds its own for the price! A little different, but at a fraction of the cost....of it hold up over time with no issues I’d pick it over the SSL on the money.
I'm listening on my ATCs and I can barely hear the difference. Crazy. Never in a million years did I think the economic marketplace for analog gear would become this good at this price.
@@DeeKeiMixes so many ssl bus plugins and so many hw clones. what's clear is that the hw clones defeat the plugins by and large and the real thing defeats the clones but by a slightly smaller margin. i got the chameleon myself, but now i'm not sure whether i really want to upgrade to an x-logic or not. so hard to choose between sound and value!
i did many testing with the original SSL and others , it's sometimes not possible to hear , but sometimes you here detailed things sound better with the original , but it's already very detailed , and you need very good monitors to hear !
how did you use the plugin vs the hardware ? the plugins in and out of converters and brought back side by side on an analog mixer/console ? The Warm audio sounds mushy
Well, those are completely usable results all round, to be sure. In soloed drum bus compression, I liked the SSL best. In parallel drum compression, I liked the Warm best. In solo guitar bus, I liked the Warm best. In full mix compression, I liked the Plugin best for the Tom section, but the least for the rest of the track. I suspect that if you used TWO different instances of the plug for left and right, you might find a different result, because it sounded like there was some phase/crosstalk stuff going on in there to me. Also, I think that at least part of those preferences was based on the settings of the units. If you watch the meters, the Warm is a touch more aggressive on heavy transients in parts, so it has a tiny bit of an unfair advantage in parallel mode IMO. But honestly, I think perfectly usable and professional results could be achieved with any of these devices assuming a baseline of skill and perception. Given the price of the Warm, I think I will pick one up to parallel compress the output of my Burl B32, on which I submix drums.
Ssl a little more balanced and open, warm a little more.. warm (in the mids), and surprised how poor the plugin performed. Maybe closer with two identical plugins in series? Anyway, Im getting the Warm :-)
I assume analog gear was going out through mixer/console and VST stayed "in the box"? There's clearly difference 3D/2D in Hardware and Plugins. Can you tell me the path of audio signals in both cases?
I thought the lows on the SSL were very smooth and tight which allowed the guitars to surf just above the lows in a very musical way. Whereas, the Warm Audio had less of that definition. Other that, both the SSL and Warm audio had the same sparkle, just the SSL a little smoother and more defined. I thought the software sounded like a dog's ass during diaria. l believe the warm audio could be dialed in closer to the SSL with some EQ adjustments to get those mid-high-mids surfing above some smoother lows.
The SSL hardware is consistently cleaner, crisper (faster), and has a better signal to noise ratio and less distortion than the WA. I don't trust the SSL plugin because it sounds like the voltage output is dialed a hair lower on the SSL plugin. Using the same exact settings on a plugin as the hardware is not reliable -- at least as far as output is concerned. I think if they did a test that was sensitive to microvolts and put a sine wave through each device and checked the output voltage I'm certain it's a hair lower on the SSL plugin. You can't trust the button/know position on the output side to be perfectly the same without verifying voltage for exactness. It may also be that the SSL plugin is simply slower than the hardware due to the latency introduced in digital signal manipulation. Hard to tell without being there. I'll take the SSL any day. I found the warm audio to overcompress, has a less expansive virtual soundstage than the SSL. It' sounds ok but I'd never take it over the SSL having heard the difference on youtube. WA seems to have a slightly sterile sound to it. No objectionable but less less character. Like hiring an accountant to compress your sound. It's clean but it's missing some liveliness.
SSL X Rack Stereobus Compressor und SSL Mynx bekommt man beides ca für 2.5k€ . Gibt es da noch einen Unterschied zu der 19er Variante warum die noch einmal 1k€ mehr kostet ?
Love the WA for the price. 800 dollars here in sweden and we use it on buss auxes a lot for the open punchy sound it has. And agree plugin does fall short.
Hey Carl, thanks for your comment. Absolute! For that price it‘s a nobrainer. The Plugins is in this case really far beyond, shocking. Stay healthy ! Looking forward to hearing from you.

Für mich klingt das Plugin viel zu flach. Erst auf dem Mixbus kommt ein Anschwung von Dichte in den Mix - ich denke das Plugin wurde darauf ausgelegt, auf dem Master verwendet zu werden.
