My favorite part of BG3 monk are the changes to step of the wind. By making it so it grants infinite jumping on that turn, if you've taken feats and equipment that bump jump distance, you don't dump STR, or you have Enhance Jump, you effectively get multiple misty steps on a single turn and can travel several hundreds of feet in six seconds. There are time constrained scenarios in the game where you have X turns to complete a task that are absolutely trivialized by a single monk. Easily the most mobile class in the game.

Yeah...really helped with the Act 2 BBEG. I jumped over all the adds, jumped of to Dame Aylin and got her up and moving, and then jumped up to the mindflayer on the highest platform, all in one turn.

@mikevismyelement 😂 I'm so glad I'm not alone on this. . . I, too, am i'm on my third monk. I really meant to try something else out-- but I caved. My husband was like ". . . Why. . . Why are you like this?"
Tbh, I also like really enjoy just running around in pretty much nothing but my durge cloak, bracers, and the blood of my enemies. One thing that kind of sucks though, is the lack of fun/witty dialogue. I really wish there were better dialogue options. Like these are high WIS characters-- and even when you spec into charisma-- uh--well I don't think programmers accounted for that. . . No shade, it's an odd decision. But, yea, Monks FTW

I actually used my monk in this exactly Scenario. I was in a part of the game where we had 6 turns to do something, but I needed to get 1 character to the far side of the area and interact with 4+ different things while also fighting off opponents. Without teleporting, which I needed to have another character save for an escort mission on the opposite side of the area, this was the only way I could have had one of my characters accomplish this without leaving some interactions behind.

@@mikealgiers7852 for sure tavern brawler is a major milestone in Monk builds for BG3, at level 6 you just get the rest of abilities you'll need to use with wholeness of body and additional passive damage. I think this is just enough to get the max efficiency from your class flavour, the rest 6 levels can go to multiclassing experiments.

@diomedes7971 I tested this ability out and didn't really like it just because it doesn't really work for my character roleplay. That's why I never took more than 8 levels in Monk. You can do fine just punching people without any explosion shenanigans.

Tavern brawler on a STR monk is absolutely incredible as it adds your STR mod TWICE to attack and damage rolls for unarmed strikes. I completely stopped using weapons entirely. as each hit was getting +10 to damage without them.
Going first 2 levels fighter for heavy armour and action surge then 10 levels of open palm monk is absolutely devastating. I highly advise it!

The takeaway I get from this is that the way to buff martial classes is to give them decent, practically resource-less features. Wholeness of M/B/S as highlighted here, Manifest Echo from Echo Knight, and Ancestral Protectors from Ancestral Guardian Barbarian all feel like this.

There are also so many items around the game that focus on adding +2 dmg of an elemental type, or adding advantage/dmg to unarmed strikes that the class gets even crazier.
A whole lot of these things can be grabbed by level 6, not to mention how broken haste/speed potions are in general.
You can also sink 1 level into Barbarian for an extra +2 damage per hit and physical resistance, if you plan to be unarmored.

I think the simplest reason that BG3 Monk is so much better is because the game has a LVL cap of 12 instead of 20, so the devs knew that following the PHB to the letter would have been a death sentence for most classes, let alone the Monk

If you're on PC, get the "unlocked unarmed strike" mod if you're a monk. Basically, it allows you to use unarmed attacks even if you have a weapon equipped (this doesn't just unlock that for monks, but obviously they get the most use from it). Considering there's weapons which boost your unarmed attack rolls and damage even from early act 1 (e.g. correlon's grace from Auntie Ethel), it allows you to get the most out of that boost and also allows you to roleplay as a monk better imo, instead of only doing unarmed attacks as bonus attacks or with flurry of blows.

He didn't even mention wha might just be the most potent part of Wholeness of Body in BG3. When activated it recovers HALF YOUR MAXIMUM KI POINTS, and ALSO regenerates a ki point PER TURN for it's duration. So even if youre double Flurrying every turn you're only neting a loss of ONE KI POINT EVERY TURN. This is INSANE. It allows you to essentially NEVER RUN OUT OF KI IN A FIGHT if you're managing correctly. At level 6 you have 6 ki points, you can turn 1&2 flurry of blows, as well as deflect missles and throw it back. FOLLOWED by regenerating all 3 of those points back on turn 3, then use 2 flurry's. Next turn, instead of being back down to 4, you now have 5. 2 flurry's. Next turn 4. This lasts 5 turns. FIVE. TURNS. It's honestly one of the best buffs Monks got for drawn-out figts and it's AMAZING.

    • @Blckviper
      @Blckviper 10 месяцев назад +1

I want to stress, this is only with 6 levels, and doesn't even take into account multiclassing. As other's have pointed out, 3 levels of rogue for thief now you can have 3 bonus actions in a turn. Haste the monk and now you're looking at 10 attacks at level 9 only net losing 2 Ki points a turn. Grab 2 levels of fighter and action surge for another 2 attacks. Grab a 7th level in monk and you can just do that more often, or a 3rd in fighter for champion and crit more often, or a 4th in rogue for another feat/ASI, or grab a level in cleric for heavy armor. THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS AND THEY'RE ALL AMAZING.

Triple dipping Dex and Wisdom for damage on your unarmed strikes is huge. Nevermind, Tavern Brawler, playing a Monk, as a Monk, is vastly improved by simply having Magic Items, that exist, made for a Monk to use. Gloves of Soul Catching, Boots of Uninhibited Kushigo, Vestments of Soul Rejuvination, then the relatively minor changes to Open Hand that give us the Manifestations, making Wholeness of Body return Ki Points, and introducing the Elixir system.
    Massive changes.
Prior: Monk can do a lot of things, and alot of things at once, but the pathways to improvement on any of them lie in Magic Items, and Ability Scores. The biggest problem is, as its always been: Too MAD, too broke, too few short rests to spend it well.

Monks in BG3 bring insane mobility AND damage. There are tons of gear options that really make the monk pop off. Level 4,. respeccing for STR and Tavern brawler is a must. End game with max STR, and WIS taking advantage of tavern brawler feat and the Boots of the Uninhibited Kushigo which adds wisdom modifier to unarmored strikes. Being able to engage, kill multiple enemies, and still have the mobility to get to safety is great. Add in the flurry of numbers after an attack and it is just one of the most fun classes I've played. I think towards the end my Flurry of Blows was hitting for 44-84 dmg. Coupled with 3 points in thief and haste, it felt like I was cheating.

This is why I adore the DM for the campaign I currently play in. I’m a Sorcerer/Monk (Lunar Sorcery, Astral Soul, if we wanna be specific), and the DM worked with me to make my character into what we affectional call a “Spellfist.” Essentially, my character is able to channel aspects of magic into her attacks to give them serious damage boosts for the cost of some sorcery points or a spell slot. Think something like Maliketh the Black Blade from Elden Ring, only no sword. I adore playing the character, the extra fun of the class just made her so much more badass.

What I like about Open Hand Monk in BG3 is that it largely operates off your bonus actions, leaving your regular actions for things that another class can do, like Barbarian. You can use your normal attacks as a Barbarian that are powered up with rage, and then use your bonus actions to do your Monk stuff. There is a surprising amount of synergy between the two in terms of action economy. Sure, it is very MAD (multi-ability dependent), but there are plenty of magic items that can massively boost certain stats, like the Gauntlets of Hill Giant Strength, and you can easily respec such a character as needed.

An Open Hand (8 lvls) Thief (3 lvls) Barbarian (1 lvl) is absolutely busted.
1st round of combat, you can pop a haste potion and rage in the same turn. Then you get 4 attacks (2 per action) that round and up to 8 in the next (2 per attack action + 2 per bonus action if you flurry) and all get that flat +2 rage damage.
I’ve seen some arguments about only going up to level 7 in monk, 3 to get thief rogue, and then putting 2 into Ranger for hunters mark and the beast tamer Natural Explorer to get a free familiar that does a little extra damage, and the dueling fighting style (flat +2 damage to attacks made with single handed weapons, which a few monk weapons fall into). There’s also a free proficiency(ies) and/or cantrip/spells from Favored Enemy.
The flat 1d6 to every attack from Hunter’s Mark is tempting. It’s only 1 bonus action to cast, and it’s concentrions until a long rest, so casting it once generally means not having to cast it again if you have decent CON for concentration saves. A familiar is always nice to have, and they have an extra ~1d4+1 damage and some kind of useful status effect (the Raven blinds and the rat lowers constitution to fuck over spell caster concentration checks. Once you get Scratch as a familiar, he does 1d6 damage). The flat 2 damage on the action attacks with a single handed monk weapon (dagger, short sword, scimitar I think) is 4 damage regularly, 8 damage hasted, which is less than the Barbarian’s +2 to everything, but the 3.5 damage/attack average from Hunter’s Mark makes up for it. A little bit more proficiency may or may not be worth it to you.
The downsides to this build: losing your 2nd and 3rd ASI/Feat. This is huge scaling potential that is lost. The damage output doesn’t really matter if you can’t hit. The mobile or athlete feats makes any martial build even more dangerous as they’re even more capable or reaching enemies quickly.
That extra d6 damage needs to be refocused as a BA once an enemy dies, which could be used for more attacks.
The hp base and retention differential is also a thing. Monks and Rogues have d8 as their hit die, Rangers have d10, and Barbarians have d12. The average of those is 5, 6, and 7 hp respectively, so there is no difference in taking 8/3/1 in Monk/Rogue/Barb and 7/3/2 in Monk/Rogue/Ranger hp wise, assuming you start with your first levels in monk or rogue (you’ll end up with 65+(CON mod x 12) regardless). If you start with Barbarian or Ranger however, you will have a base lvl 1 hp of either 12+CON mod or 10+CON mod, which is only a 2 hp difference that drops to a 1 hp difference once you take your second level in Ranger instead of monk. The eventual hp bases at level 12 look like this: 65 starting with monk/rogue, 66 staring with Ranger, and 67 starting with Barbarian. HP retention is the big thing though. The Barbarian physical damage resistances during rage are huge in a fight, especially early game. You’re taking less damage overall.
Alternatively, if you take a level in warlock over barbarian and choose fiend, you heal from killing people with Dark One’s Blessing, effectively abusing your damage output to keep yourself in the fight longer. It won’t be much healing (likely only 2-3 hp/kill) but I’ve gone down because I took 2 more hp than I had left.
Or if you take Great Old One, your crits frighten nearby enemies (disadvantage on attack and ability checks while in line of sight) potentially saving yourself and party members from some really heavy attacks. Considering how many attacks per round you have, crits are very likely, and if you take the Luck of the Far Realms illithid power, you can choose to crit.
The hp base for this build is all d8s so it’s 63, but if you’re constantly healing or constantly being missed by attacks, that can be negligible. They also get everything back on a short rest.
TL;DR: Monk Builds are wild and there are a fuck ton of ways to get more dmg/hp out of them. The Open Hand(8)/Thief(3)/Barb(1) build is good for hp retention and consistent static damage through rages (Tank build). The Open Hand(7)/Thief(3)/Ranger(2) build is more for focused damage on one enemy at a time through Hunter’s Mark and a well chosen familiar (BBEG Bully). The Open Hand(8)/Thief(3)/Warlock(1) builds are for either hp regeneration (old one) or battlefield control (fiend) that get everything back on a short rest (Energizer Bunny).

    Here's what you do:
    First feat -- Tavern Brawler
Second Feat -- Heavy Armor Proficiency
You get cinder gauntlets pretty early in the game prior to the underdark so this is 1-4 damage
Spec as Barb early on until you get heavy armor proficiency and get Open-Hand style...alright after you get all of this down then Act 2 and onwards:
Third Feat max out your strength not dex, respec into Fighter for action surge and also Rogue for the extra bonus action...in one turn at 20 strength you will dish out around 13-28 damage per normal fist strike, (so much more damage throwing items though), and you can basically dont have to respec your stats for constitution and strength (20). Equip Vaconia's Shield and youre set to just wreak havoc...
Asterion is incredibly OP though to build with heavy armor monk, he can solo Gortash and his mob soloing. I dont think monk was supposed to be played as a solo class but it build incredibly well with tavern brawler

Tavern brawler shoots the damage out the roof where your dealing damn near 80 damage without a second bonus action as your punches are dealing like 16 damage MINIMUN and capping out at like I think 28 or 30 and then you add the hope gloves and that’s adds another d10 of damage or you do the hill gaint gauntlets and dump points into wisdom and dex for ac and wholeness damage and it gets crazy mid to end game where your murdering bosses in like 2 to 3 turns with ease

There's also the their martial arts die scaling faster (d6 at level 1) and flurry of blows not necessitating that the monk take its action first. Usually yeah your open hand technique can make enemies prone but RAW (crawford had confirmed this) you cannot first flurry and topple the target and then make your unarmed strikes with advantage, but baldur's gate basically says "fuck that" and allows you to make your bonus action in any sequence, so you can make your attack actions with advantage. Furthermore baldur's gate actually gives you good robes and gloves, which dnd is sorely lacking in (you almost always have to homebrew these items), and while i won't touch on tavern brawler (because even a straight dex monk is amazing), magic items adding a d4 on every hit of the class which makes the most hits per turn is just great

Let's not forget the extra bonus action you can get by dumping 3 levels in rogue, that's also insanely powerful for the monk. The items for the monk in this game are also great. My only gripe is at a point in the game where the game gives you two insanely powerful items for the monk for the same slot and you end up never using the coolest one of the two because it's subpar if you are willing to respec, which is kind of sad. The fact that all weapons are monk weapons if you are proficient with them is also amazing. I also play monk in tabletop and I don't find it weak but you can't really play it in a way that makes you loved by your party, you go in, hit and skedaddle further than your mage, it's very strong at doing that and you'll likely be the last one to die in any party wipe and unlike the others you'll get the choice of actually saving your skin during a party wipe if you want. People may just hate you but I've had plenty of fun playing the monk.

BG3 Tavern Brawler lets you add your STR bonus twice to both attack And damage on unarmed, thrown, and improvised attacks. So if your Monk is STR based, assuming you hit 18 strength with the Stat bump TB gives, your fists become effectively +4 weapons.
To put that into perspective, even the most powerful legendary weapons *ever* really only carry a +3 to attacks and damage.
And then you can get STR to 20 for a +5, and magic items can give further boosts...

I haven’t been able to bring myself to play a Monk because the mechanics fail to capture the fantasy. Mechanically, the Monk fails at everything they’re supposed to be good at: they deal low damage, they can’t dodge hits due to low AC, and they can’t take the hits that they’re inevitably going to take due to their low AC because of their d8 hit die. All of those things are core to my fantasy of playing a Monk, and when the mechanics of the class fail to capture my Kung Fu Master fantasy, then I’d rather play a Fighter flavored as a gruff sellsword or a Paladin as a noble knight or a Rogue as a stealthy thief because the mechanics capture enough of the fantasy to make the class work both in and out of combat.

Dood! I figured this out like 3 days ago! I switched to open hand monk and with magic item gloves adding wis modifier to each punches damage... THEN I figured out that... their bonus action is a double attack ... and Thief rogues get TWO! bonus actions at all times.... basically each punch does as much damage as a greatsword, two attacks + 2 attacks per bonus action which I now(at lvl 10) have 2 of each turn. probably the most single target damage + stunning strike/topple flurry being GREAT at incapacitating people if there's many enemies on the board. with unparalleled movement options - IT'S GREAT!
and having the extra bonus action means I can be MORE mobile with jumping around as needed while still able to get off a flurry of blows. AND if I use the wholeness of body I suddenly have 3 bonus actions... (I haven't tried out this in combat but the symbol of BA gets to 3)
and I have to say - being the "face" of the party, doing the most interactions, being a rogue I get expertise in a bunch of things as well - I really like my character and it's strengths

    > Everything the Monk wants to be is outperformed by something else
Yes, and then you have to wonder why the Monk is capable of doing several roles at once while all these outperforming classes are stunted by being specialized. They are Rogueish skirmishers while doing damage and locking down enemies, as well as having ranged options both to complement their skirmishing and to use when enemies stay out of their range.
The thing with the Monk is not in what it excells at, but at the range of options they have.
Rogues, Warlocks, and Wizards all cannot fight like a Monk can, while a Monk can do what they are capable of. Fighters do not have the inherent range of options of the Monk, especially when you want to outperform one by going Great Weapon Master.
The only real problem is indeed the Ki tax on everything they do. If you were to actually fix the way that Monks are in 5e, you would make their abilities more powerful than those of other classes while keeping the low amount of uses they get for them. They become explosive in power, but selective in when to use it. By making the Monk just generally more effective at what they do, you end up with no reason to play any other class due to the Monk being all other classes rolled up in one. Which is the exact argument used against the Monk.
So yeah... Either live with the niche that the Monk has of being serviceable in many different roles without needing different characters, or make a niche where they are less useful than any other class but can choose to outperform all other classes for a short while. Because a blanket buff for the Monk does not solve the balance issues you have.

  • @NightWing1800
    @NightWing1800 10 месяцев назад

I'm pretty sure monk has the same amount of ki points. In bg3 its 1 point per level starting at level one, and in the table top it's 2 at level 2 and then 1 level each after.
However somethings that do make it stand out compared to the tabletop is that the game is fundamentally different. In tabletop, a lot of encounters you can get into action in one turn without burning your action or at worst you dash. I just have not had a DM who wants to make maps as complicated as BG3 level design. In BG3, I might actually lose a turn or even two without getting to do anything productive as a melee martial. I have Karlach in my party on my second playthrough and the most valuable items I've found for her is a returning throwing weapon, a ring that boosts its damage, and a ring that increases her movement speed. Fighter can double monks damage, but that won't matter if fighter cant get close enough to actually use any of it. Monks movement makes it feel so much nicer to play.
Secondly, theres magic stuff everywhere and no attunement cap. Early on theres gloves that give 2 lighting charges each punch, which translates into +1 hit and damage and then theyre consumed at 5 for 1d8. Thats pretty good on a monk. I got that at level three but if I had a better party composition, I could have gotten it at level 2. Theres also gloves that add a d4 fire damage. Theres an amulet that restores ki points. Theres clothes that give me +2 dex and advantage on dex checks. Theres a lot that feels great to have as a monk.
And lastly the Illithid Powers. Different classes can leverage these in more effective ways. Paladin getting one free crit is really good in a smite. I have a cantrip at level 5 that deals 3d6 and heals me the same amount of the target is concentrating because I can make my powers a bonus action and just cast guidance on myself with my action. For monk, psionic overload adding a d4 is really strong because I just get more attacks per round than everyone, and the ability that kills things with less hit points than I have spent tadpoles goes farther. On other characters, I would just run out of nearby targets sometimes and not get to do everything I could have done. As a monk, I have the movement speed and attacks to take out a lot of smaller enemies very quickly that could have worn me down otherwise because I basically treat them as having 10 less hp then they do. Leveraging that on other classes has not felt as easy.
I also just think while monk got better, everyone else got weaker in some ways. Movement and positioning are much bigger concerns, no first level feat makes builds come in line slower, and the DM being a machine means you cant do things like "Scorching ray, did the first two kill? It did? Switching targets for the first." Sometimes I'm committing an extra magic missile or eldritch blast because they might survive on 2 hp and that would be devastating. So I'm missing potential damage if that second beam would kill but the third wouldnt. On top of restricted spell list meaning that casters dont have the answer to everything all the time. I had Shadowheart on my first play through, and she actually felt like the weakest in the party compared to Astarion and Laezel, who I respecced into a dex fighter and gave a bow. I even respecced her to Light cleric because I just needed her to be pulling more weight.
The game introduced ways to play that don't match the tabletop, and monk navigates those differences very well. My opinion might change as I get into later acts, because druid felt a lot stronger in acts 1 and 2 than it did in act 3, but so far, monk has been my favorite martial class in act 1.

Tavern brawler is absolutely stupid in BG3 in the best way possible. It gives you a +1 to strength plus you get to double your strength mod to hit and to damage. If you have a 20 strength, you're adding 20 extra damage per turn, plus it makes it so hard to not hit. Play a strength monk and absolutely eviscerate everybody. I ended up respec-ing mine because it made everything too trivial, especially when you get hasted, have 3 rogue levels for an extra BA, and use the level 6 feature for another BA. 10 attacks per turn and you're doing hundreds of points of damage.
