  • A few cuts made on my PM1030V lathe. All of the cuts chipped nicely when DOC was pushed a little bit. Smaller lathes can absolutely cut well with carbide inserts and they can absolutely use negative rake tools.

    do you recommend negative inserts for hobby lathes like 1030V? Does your tool holder for 16mm?

    Really considering one of these. Do you think it would be possible to use a BXA tool post? I have 4 BXA holders already.

    • @hobbymachining4295
      @hobbymachining4295  5 лет назад

      I can't say for sure, but I think it could be made to fit. It would definitely be a bit on the large side. Though the machine comes with an AXA tool post installed and 5 holders, so you would not come out ahead much trying to get the BXA to fit.

    Want this lathe once I have enough money saved up to buy one. Did you get the variant with the DRO and if so do you think it’s worth it?

    • @hobbymachining4295
      @hobbymachining4295  5 лет назад

      I did not get the one with the DRO, though I think a DRO would be very useful. It is hard to say if it is worth the $500 as the DRO itself probably costs around $200-$300. The installation costs are a bit high in my opinion, but then you don't need to figure out yourself how to mount them. Personally, I would buy the DRO separate and spend the extra few hundred on more tooling.

    Hello, I'm wondering: Is that a San Ou chuck and how much runout does it have?

    • @hobbymachining4295
      @hobbymachining4295  5 лет назад

      Those are the stock chucks that came with the machine, there is no brand information on them so I can't say for sure. Runout isn't bad, though I am not sure what the correct way to measure the runout of a chuck is. I can get things running within .001" without much trouble generally.

      Hobby Machining Put a gauge pin in the 3 jaw then measure the cylindrical part of the gauge block with a dial indicator. 4 jaw is pointless because of its versatility.

    • @Levite92
      @Levite92 10 месяцев назад

      @@trainman53714 jaws are definitely not pointless. You can clamp on parts offset or even square or rectangular parts. You can dial in a 4 jaw more perfect than a 3 jaw as well. Very useful tool if you know how to use it.

      I absolutely agree with you. I made that comment before I went to trade school and got to use a 4 jaw lol. Very useful chucks!

    by anychance does ANYONE Own this lathe, and can get me a dimension of the feet that attach to the chip tray, im doing a spanning beam bench before it shows up, and no one can seem to find the dimension im looking for, any help would be appreciated!!

    • @hobbymachining4295
      @hobbymachining4295  3 года назад

      End to end, the feet span about 44.75". The headstock foot is 5.25" in X and 6.375" in Z. The tailstock foot is 5.25" in X and 4" in Z. Hope that helps.

    Is it just the microphone, or is it really that noisy? I've been considering this machine, but this sounds just flat out awful! I'd like to see some large diameter faceplate stuff close to maximum swing capability turned at the lowest rpm, as well as some fairly large diameter coarse threading, say 1 inch dia. I have a hard time believing that any of these variable speed lathes have enough torque to do that on low speed settings.

    • @hobbymachining4295
      @hobbymachining4295  6 лет назад

      It is probably a little bit of both. The machine is dead quiet without the gears engaged, but the gear fit isn't fantastic so it does make a fair bit of noise. But there is nothing else on in the shop so there is no comparison for noise level. However, you can have a conversation with the lathe on and cutting, though you will need to raise your voice a little bit. Torque on the low end is limited, but it has been capable for most of the stuff I have done.
