The only difference I could see the govan being better is that since the leather is good quality you could change the soles over the shoes lifetime, extending the lifespan of the pair. If they introduce outsole sales then the shoe would easily last more than twice the af1's span.
Its a small batch production so the target audience is generally not practical and economical. Almost no small clothing manufacturer cant compete in a pure value with larg corps. People just want to support diversity in clothing manufacturing, keep things interesting.
Hey my man, I have noticed something weird. So, I recently showed my wife your channel and she loves the cutting boots in half concept. Recently she has been into quality footwear as well, and she just bought herself a pair of Iron Rangers. Oddly enough, I think there is a HUGE quality disparity between men's and women's red wing heritage boots. They advertise a softer leather and a texon insole, however they don't mention what seems to be a non-leather welt on the heel, and a sole that is just glued on rather than nailed. I'm not sure if there are other shortcuts in their construction, as I can't afford to cut my wife's boots in half. But considering they are the same price, I can't see a justification for using cheaper materials. Maybe you could take a look? Do a video?
When looking at how good of a value something is I don't think that small business vs big business comes into the equation. If you prefer to support small businesses and are willing to spend more money to do so, great, but for an equivalent product and support you will be getting less value for your money. I typically prefer to support small businesses and I feel like they do often have good value in ways that big companies don't, better support, more customization, or sometimes just better quality. I think with shoes and boots there is very significant value in spending more money for something that is more comfortable, even if you end up with something that doesn't last as long as the price would indicate, but like many other things it depends on the use case. Based entirely on this video and what I mentioned above I would consider these worth it over the airforce ones and that is completely ignoring that it is a small company.
Part of the reason these are so expensive is that they are made in a 1st world country (Italy) with 1st world wages. You can get much cheaper high-quality sneaker-like shoes for around $100, but they will be made in SE Asia, like the Birchbury's which are made in Vietnam....
No, it’s profit. These shoes MAYBE take $70 worth of materials, however govan is marking them up over 3-fold, this shoe if he wants to keep them competitive with a pair of AF1’s should sell for $150, because at the end of the day, this is just a slightly better leather AF1 with less durability in the sole ( which in a sneaker leather doesn’t really matter )
Agreed! Our costs to make the shoes are almost 3x the cost due to manufacturing conditions we are proud of. We could have our sneakers made in Asia, but the conditions aren't as nice. Our markup is also lower than Nike, adidas etc...
consider doing a regular AF-1 vs. the AF-1 "Craft." the crafts supposedly use better (read: real) leather and for that reason, are supposed to not only be far more comfortable, but crease less because of the genuine cowhide. would love to know if this is true, or another bunch of Nike marketing BS.
I understand how govan is being priced but still a bit expensive imo. The Govans seem to move and crease like I would expect for that grade of leather, with a sharp crease test like you did. Overall, probably worth the price, if I was in the market. It's objectively a better shoe, and a better company.
I don’t really understand what Govan was saying about the companies and black culture? What do the companies have to do with what shoes people choose to buy. If he said “we use ethical labour unlike Nike” I would’ve been on side, but he seemed to be trying to make it specifically about black culture, when it’s Pakistani and Vietnamese people Nike etc. generally exploit.

I love your videos. But my eyes popped when I saw Govan. It is a suburb of Glasgow, on the banks of the River Clyde in Scotland, quite an amazing place, and the really scary thing is it's the sort of place where the philosophy of Robert Govan would fit in quite nicely; sneaker culture, hip hop, injustice, a strong sense of pride. And of course, football; Rangers.
With the attention on AF1’s and the 40th anniversary being celebrated with the retro of the Color of the Month pairs, I’d be curious to see a dissection of those. I’ve heard they are pretty good. Curious to see how they hold up compared to the normal pair and the “fresh” pair 😁 Enjoyed the vid!

@@FgtRtd that’s the thing some people I’ve seen getting them say they’re the best AF1 out. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bumped it up a slight bit since it’s Color of the Month but you could be right. Could just be a regular old pair.
@@FgtRtd color of the month’s role in the history of the AF1 can’t be understated so I’m hoping what I’ve heard is true and the quality is at least A LITTLE better than a regular pair. I mean, the bar isn’t very high to begin with so it wouldn’t be that difficult for them to step it up just a little bit.
It’s funny every time you said Govan- in Scotland one of the most deprived areas of Glasgow has this name, once famous for its ship yards, it’s pronounced Guv’ un. It reminded me of an old comedy show we have in the UK. The husband was called Mr Bucket but the wife always pronounced it bouquet!
The Scots and Northern Irish were heavily involved in the tobacco and cotton plantations in the USA which is where cities like Glasgow and Belfast built much of their wealth. And many African slaves, when released, adopted the surnames of their plantation managers or even the names of the plantations where they worked, simply because they did not know their real names. That is why so many African Americans now have Scottish names and almost certainly the origin of the Govan name in this case.
Is funny how everyone forgot how the sneakers were back in the 80s and 90s. Almost every big Brand, Adidas, Nike, Kangaroos, Fila where made with a really big quality because they did last way longer and we destroyed them over time. And that leather stood up for the challenge! We deserve better!

this really isn't relevant to this video, but, did you ever think about slicing up some cycling shoes? I'd be really interested to see what you thought about some sidi, bont or s-works shoes and how they're made (if you do do this, wear a mask when you do the cutting, carbon fiber dust is bad for your lungs)
I don't mind sponsored reviews because of bias - I trust Weston to be as honest as anyone can while still making enough money to eat - but it bugs me that Govan has to pay for a review while Nike gets reviewed for free (actually, they get paid for the sneakers). I'm not throwing shade, I understand the economics of why it works that way and I don't know how to fix the problem. But the unfairness is a bummer.
Nobody would have heard of govan otherwise. There are Nikes everywhere, I'm interested to see them cut open as they are a likely choice for the average consumer. I'd never find Govans in a shop where I live and they are only of interest for me and would unlikely ever be purchased.
After getting my first pair of Horween leather Crown Northampton sneaker I have never looked back. I now have 3 pairs and the fact that they can be resoled back to life.. they would pretty much out live me and keeps looking better as the Horween leather ages.
There’s one with better leather compared to regular AF1 called AF1 Craft. I think you should break those down it will be an interesting video. Love your videos btw ❤
After watching your videos, I change my mindset on buying sneakers. Do you think you can cut and review Yeezy 380 and Yeezy 700 V3? Shout out from PR 🇵🇷
I don't think we should be expecting any less creasing even with most of the "higher quality" leathers used for sneakers. A lot of these leathers are still corrected grain rather than true full grain (not sure about Govans), and I think there's just diminishing returns trying to lengthen the pristine look lifespan by upping the leather quality past a point whereby sneakers becomes too expensive to own. IMO Puma has done a great job that was achieved through better shoe design- Look at how the way they made the Ralph Sampson- there's 2 ridges at the end of the tongue that would accommodate precisely where your toes would flex, eliminating most possibilities of crease marks. If you want something retro-looking, hate creases, allows for your own orthotics and usually cost less than AF1s, that's a good option.
Also the higher quality leather will last longer and look better over time. Wondering about the resoleability. If they did some rough out or heavily tumbled leather in the crease points it would also look better for longer.
hi. i wonder of you guys can do some cycling shoes. they are some of the most overpriced and heavily marketed sports equipment. and because cycling can get super expensive on the super enthusiast/pro level, the cycling shoes can get up to 300$. thanks for the good work and nice videos.

You should do a comparison of the Reebok club C 85 vs the club C 85 vintage. I have a pair of Adidas continental 80, which they don’t sell anymore, and a pair of Reebok club C 85s and the Adidas are much more comfortable than the Reeboks I believe the sole is a solid chunk of foam in the adidas and just a rubber cup sole with big voids in it on the Reebok, kind of like the Stan Smith. I think the vintage ones are slightly higher quality and made a similar way to the Adidas. Who knows this might change though because I believe Reebok just got sold. You could also throw a pair of the continental 80s into the comparison but since you can’t buy them retail anymore there’s probably no point in doing that.
I think most people that enjoy sneakers and especially this type of sneaker, they need force fields to stop the creasing from happening. Been using force fields in these tyoes of sneakers for years and its the only way to stop them from creasing right away.

I love when a channel is upfront and honest. Really love the channel!
Review the Air Force 1 craft, they’re the better quality version of the regular Air Force 1
Thanks for the info, that's really cool! Great to learn more things every day
you're way more objective than biased and that's what's important
With the attention on AF1’s and the 40th anniversary being celebrated with the retro of the Color of the Month pairs, I’d be curious to see a dissection of those. I’ve heard they are pretty good. Curious to see how they hold up compared to the normal pair and the “fresh” pair 😁
Enjoyed the vid!
They're modern Nikes lol so they'd be made with the same low quality materials with changed up colors in order to drive up reseller price and push sales

@@FgtRtd that’s the thing some people I’ve seen getting them say they’re the best AF1 out. I wouldn’t be surprised if they bumped it up a slight bit since it’s Color of the Month but you could be right. Could just be a regular old pair.
@@Jeffreynelius would be really nice, I've always been a Nike fan but I've just switched from forces to vapormax and 95's or 97's..
@@FgtRtd color of the month’s role in the history of the AF1 can’t be understated so I’m hoping what I’ve heard is true and the quality is at least A LITTLE better than a regular pair. I mean, the bar isn’t very high to begin with so it wouldn’t be that difficult for them to step it up just a little bit.
make air force 1 craft, the af1 with premium leather
What happened to the ‘center cut score’?
@UCvOnhrGuuQj_Kd7V0evE0fg what did I win?
I don't give a s*** about Air Force Ones or a shoe trying to look like them but to my eye the Govans look a lot nicer.
Man I love these Sneaker Saturdays
Govan is rough, rough area of Glasgow, Scotland.
It's the most frightening name I can think of.
😆
Side panels are too plain, most people would think its just a af1 replica, and a bad one.
@@joeybaseball7352 Yeah yeah i guess you always play the victim. And want to play the smart one by making a stupid comment passing as a sarcastic. Instead of recognize that we as customers play dumb and keep paying money for sh**tthat is not worth it!
As soon as he brought race into it I knew no matter what I wouldn’t buy these
this really isn't relevant to this video, but, did you ever think about slicing up some cycling shoes? I'd be really interested to see what you thought about some sidi, bont or s-works shoes and how they're made (if you do do this, wear a mask when you do the cutting, carbon fiber dust is bad for your lungs)
I second this. Also do a flat mountain bike shoe
Tan Govans looks dope 🥶
What a cool story! I don't wear these type of shoes but this is fantastic regardless, I wish Govan all the best! Also, what a great company photo!
Considering I see big brands give far less for similar price tags, this seems like good value if that's your reference
Please evaluate the $25 Walmart sneakers. Thanks, Ken
The af1 look like they creases less but the shape is absolutely horrendous. I actually prefer the natural creases more than bent cardboard imo
AF1 creases in an ugly unappealing way. You should try out the AF1 craft, the soft leather creases beautifully and they're more comfortable as well.
If you value durability and longevity in a shoe, something tells me you aren't exactly in the market for a pair of Air Force Ones.
Also the higher quality leather will last longer and look better over time.
Wondering about the resoleability.
If they did some rough out or heavily tumbled leather in the crease points it would also look better for longer.
Can you look at Air Force 1 High Sculpt? I just bought a pair on sale and to me they feel like much better quality than most othe AF1s I had in hand
hi. i wonder of you guys can do some cycling shoes. they are some of the most overpriced and heavily marketed sports equipment. and because cycling can get super expensive on the super enthusiast/pro level, the cycling shoes can get up to 300$. thanks for the good work and nice videos.
Well they cost twice as much as the "original", so obviously they can afford better materials and quality...
For twice the price you can get two pairs of air forces and wear both and they whould last for a long time
Hows the sizing on the Basketeers?? Can’t seem to find any sizing info anywhere. They don’t have 1/2 sizes so trying to figure out if I go with 11 or 12. Thanks 🙏🏼🙏🏼
Id love to see how these compare to the lunar forces and how the tech in each shoe differs!
Super interesting discussion on value. I definitely agree
would like a review on the Twisted X Men's Lace-Up Chukka Driving Moc review and sizing !! How about it !!
Maybe you should try the Hender Scheme version of AF1? For the “finalest” decision ahah
You could also throw a pair of the continental 80s into the comparison but since you can’t buy them retail anymore there’s probably no point in doing that.
great video!! can you do a video on palladium boots?
I think most people that enjoy sneakers and especially this type of sneaker, they need force fields to stop the creasing from happening. Been using force fields in these tyoes of sneakers for years and its the only way to stop them from creasing right away.
No score on centering the cut on the heal? Your slippin bro.
How do they fit?
He's... Very proud to just knock off a popular shoe, charge double for it, and rationalize it as some social victory.
Try the John Elliot af1 supposedly it has double the leather and a lunarlon super thick insole w zoom
If you are concerned about your sneakers creasing, newsflash no one cares. Great video as always.
Can you review the Nocta Air Force 1? They’re the new all white Air Force 1 collab and it’s supposed to have really high quality leather.
Check out the AF1 Craft, they seem to be made of better (softer) leather.
You mean the one he just cut open and it was dogshit?
@@fioredeutchmark nope, those are the fresh. Crafts got a suede heel tab.
ever thought of cutting open the sb force 58? suede and leather versions?
I would definitely favour the Govan shoes over AF1s if I'm supporting the little guy. Nike is definitely not a great company.
Great company or not, stealing someone's design, claiming to make it premium, and selling it for two times the price is not a great thing to do.
@@shaggyrogers9028 stealing someone's design? You mean like Nike Pumps?? 😂😂
Great video, man! I am wondering if you have any opinions on JK boots? How do they compare to Nick's boots, since they are in the similar price point. Will you review a pair of them in the future? Thanks man!
Can you cut an our legacy camion boot, very hyped within fashion circles and would love to see your thoughts
You know what is interesting about this is that I just watched a video about wearing fake or inspired clothes. This shoe would fit under that type of shoe. Not actually fake or a replica but still inspired so some times according to that other video still called a rep. It was a very interesting video.
Just received ny new Gowan’s went for the Honey they are lovely. Great thanks from the UK for your review
You should cut open the Rick Owens drkshdw Ramones, I’m really curious if there’s a shank in the midsole because they are very stiff on feet but comfortable and give support.
Govan might crease a bit more but still looks waaaay better vreased up and holds its shape very well too.
