  • Loads in the back of trucks must be restrained correctly to prevent accidents and protect all drivers. Join our officers on the road as they pull over trucks and check what's in the back.

I drive a 10tonne truck and I pulled up to a place to pick up 2 pallets. As soon as the loader saw my truck he noticed it wasn't going to be suitable to restrain the load. On the left side front of the truck is a Pantech door. The rest of the truck is curtain sider. Both containers weighed over 1.5t and were metal. As I can't put a heavy item near the headboard due to not being able to tie down to stop sideways movement my lashings wouldn't have been sufficient to stop the load moving forward under braking.
That is an example of chain of responsibility in action. Under previous laws the loader might not have cared as all the responsibility fell on the driver. Whereas now, he can actually be prosecuted for allowing me to take that load.
