- ( www.TFLcar.com ) Star Trek Anton Yelchin was recently killed when his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee rolled backwards crushing him. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but Anton Yelchin's Grand Cherokee was recalled by FCA for a gearshift that could have caused this accident. In this TFLcar video Jeep's Recalled Gearshift Issue is Demonstrated, Examined & Explained.

@@WerdnaNiraehs What's funny?
I remember reading about him being hit by his vehicle but I didn't realize it was due to such a weird gear selector on his vehicle. Makes it even more unfortunate.
I’m sorry for your loss.
@@JohnDoe-zw8vxI remember reading his death. So sad! But I didn't realize until today that he may have died due to this issue with his car. How utterly sad! RIP Mr.Yelchin! My deepest condolences to your family and friends!
This is one of the very best videos ever released on this channel; get right to the point, no long & loud annoying music!!!
I'm glad that every Prius I've owned (2 so far) has had a dedicated Park button. It's got a cvt that returns to center but that dedicated Park button makes it absolutely clear that you have engaged Park.
It's a stupid design. End story.
Thank you finally someone with a brain
yeah this is dumb, how are you supposed to know if it's in park if the battery is dead?
probably designed by some 20 year old new hire
+Marcus Taintor it won't even shift out of park if the battery is dead dumbass
+ldq23 wow that's an even worse ideas, who invented that?
When chief designer came from Logitech, this is what you end up with.
hey automotive engineers, stop trying to reinvent the wheel. just make a floor shifter that doesn't need to automatically return to the middle. What's the point of that?!? Who asked for that?!? Who wants that?!? I have never heard anyone say "I really like my new car, I just wish that when I put it in drive the gear selector would automatically return to the neutral position." Seriously stupid. Although people getting out of there rigs without putting them in park are also dumb, but this stupid gear selector design isn't helping.
Yeah, it's a solution desperately in search of a problem. Maybe their next great innovation will be an accelerator pedal that makes the car go slower when you push it down and faster when you let it back up.
Demont Washington lol no shit
Hey drivers learn how to operate a vehicle. Supposed to be putting the parking brake on whenever you park anyways.
I've had many cars that had parking brakes that couldn't handle steep hills.
+jimmelay71 that wasn't the parking brake it was a lack of vehicle maintenance. Parking brakes need to be regularly adjusted if they don't hold the vehicle weight on a steep grade.
I test drove a 2013 and i loved the old shifter ! It clunks and clicks into park just like old vehicles. When i saw the 2014 shifter i thought WHAT THE HELL IS THIS ????
It was going from the 5 speed transmission to the 8 speed, that's why they were different.
+The02CumminsRAM Incorrect. The old shifter was an electronic shifter as well. All it did was tell the Transmission to go into drive, reverse, neutral or park. Nothing else. The amount of gears in the Transmission was irrelevant, because that was handled by the transmission's electronics. You could literally do a 1:1 swap of the shifters and drive away with no problems. They use identical wiring harnesses. It is beyond absurd that Chrysler isn't swapping these ZF junk shifters out.
Exactly. clunk-R....clunk-N...clunk-D. Give me something I can feel
What an absolute stupid idea for a shifter . Good video though.
They were just trying to be fancy and failed at it, that's all lol
+MAN_ON_WHEELZ Agreed.
K.I.S.S. works every time.
I personally like the shifter a lot, but because of resale value I won't be buying a '15 GC. If people can't figure this out, they'd have no chance with a manual. This is ridiculously overblown.
What's wrong with it?
This is a stupidity / user error issue. Shouldn't have been a re-call. And I don't think it's fair to say that it's a flawed design. The use the same exact shifter design on Audi and there aren't any issues....
+Tarek EL Derbas you must be one of them not smart enough to operate one.
+lee hancock either that or he's just high
Actually, it also has the same issue in the Audi and several other makers. As they said, some did make a minor correction when the door opens. Others have not. FCA is just trying to get ahead of the issue this time around so they don't get fined as bad as they did for early 2000 model year vehicles. For the past several years FCA has been issuing voluntary recalls for minor or potential issues that a typical manufacturer would not.
maybe it's because Audi oh I don't know made a fucking fail safe for the shifter and it still works when shifting quickly up and down to get to the right selection. the Chrysler doesn't when quickly shifting so yeah that's a design flaw if it doesn't work well in a real world situation it will be put in then it needs a redesign.
Audi's design is much better and safer. I've driven both cars and with Audi's I've never had a problem, on the other hand, I did leave a Grand Cherokee in reverse instead of park once. and let me tell you, that shifter is very dangerous.
After a lot of research I had made my mind about changing my 2011 Sienna (don't need a van anymore) for the grand Cherokee this is a deal breaker for me honestly , I guess my original choice for the Lexus gs350 will be the one to get.
Great informative video! This what I love about this channel...always giving good honest information
Thanks for posting TFL. This definitely had enthusiasts scratching their heads including me.
i think it's to make it vaguely resemble a sequential transmission found in motorcycles and race cars.
This is an example of over engineering something. Jeep should go back to the 2013 shifter where it STAYS IN THE POSITION THE VEHICLE IS IN. Shifting into gears should be simple, don't make it more complicated than it has to be because our lives are already hard enough......
They have already gone back to the old shifter. .
That's what happens when you have a German company make a shifter
It is more of an example of under-engineer something. There are other companies such as Mercedes and Audi (who I think Jeep was trying to imitate) who have used this style of shifter without issue. However, as mentioned in the video, they also used an electronically controlled parking brake that can be automatically activated if inadvertently left in neutral. Not surprisingly, when this system was implemented into a cheaper car, some shortcuts were taken.
+pjbadgersuw26 a few Audi owners found that cars "roll away" in some cases. Cost cutting happens on the Luxury Level ALSO LOL
mate sivric I've have never heard of that and can't seem to find anything on it either. Where did you find that? The only way that I could see that happening is if you have some freak malfunction of the electrical system, which wouldn't be intentional cost cutting.
The commenters here stating people should be using their parking brake likely know the manual way of life. The reality is most people drive automatic and using a parking brake rarely crosses their mind unless they're on a hill.
PRNDL isn't broke. I don't get why companies are trying new designs for something I never heard anyone complain about.
If there's a handbrake, I always pull it, sometimes if I'm in a car without one, I'll still reach for it out of a habit formed driving manual cars. I almost never go for the footbrake without thinking about it though. It's just not as intuitive, and a generally less satisfying design to use.
My parents have driven automatics for a long time, they still set the Ebrake because you never know. I don’t understand why you wouldn’t. It’s easy and another safety device against the car rolling away.
It'll tell you right in your owners manual to set the ebrake before engaging your automatic transmission vehicle into park.
using my parking break is a habit of mine whether i’m on a hill or not.. is that weird?
To those people who are blaming driver error, realize this; 5 years from now when these are 2nd or 3rd owner cars with 100,000+miles on them the linkage will be worn out from returning to neutral and may cause the vehicle to jump into a different gear.
Wtf! It's not that hard to figure out if what fucking gear your car is in, come on people!
It's only when people get careless when they are in a rush. This design is poor. I wouldn't want this in a police or any emergency vehicles
Parking and drive are on the two ends, how can anybody miss that? This is common sense, BMW has similar gear selector, and a hand operated parking brake, how come I have never heard of any complaints from BMW drivers? idk man, to me, those people are just retarded
Again, it's careless. Common sense can't be used in this situation when your in a hurry. When they think they are in park but are in neutral because they didn't completely engage in park.
+Al Montoya you would think if you own the car for some time you know how to operate it. no excuses!
I have a 2014 GC and never had an issue with the shifter.
+Tarek EL Derbas ok so you're a dumb fuck that would fail to use a simple gear shifter.
I'm so glad to see this fully explained. I keep hearing so much miss information about these shifters and it's disturbing how few people who all own an automobile have no understanding of what they really are and how they operate.
Wow, what a terrible design. You should always be able tell what position a shifter is in by feel alone, with gear indicators and stick position as a secondary reference. These are simple things that your sub-conscience will notice. This shifter seems to be designed to fool your sub-conscience. The worst part is that there seems to be no advantage whatsoever to this design. It is different solely for the purpose of being different.
I have this car and shifter, and it does give you tactile feedback. You can feel the clicks as you change it, that is what I use as my primary feedback, and I have always picked up when I have missed the gear I wanted, the shifter only springs back when you let go, until that point you know which gear you are selecting. If I'm getting out of the car I also apply the park brake, common sense. They had to change to a new type of shifter to accommodate the 8 speed trans. This type is a common one of euro cars, makes sense they copied it.
No, this shifter has nothing to do with the eight speed transmission. And it is not common on European cars. And when i say you should be able to feel which gear it is in, i'm not referring to the fake tactile feedback, i am referring to where the stick itself rests.
Agree 100%. It's a solution desperately in search of a problem. Delivers no value at all. What's next - a triangular steering wheel?
How is that? Of course they had to change the shifter, they couldn't make the MB shifter work with the ZF 8 speed. It is used in the A8 and Merc and BMW SUVs. I've driven with this shifter for 2 years, it isn't a problem for me that it returns to center, and the spring forward allows the D position to double for Sport mode selection, which I use a fair bit. It delivers for those requirements, as it does in the A8.
+Bennnn0 Audi's has a fail-safe.
Excellent presentation!
thanks for the information bro
God forbid people use their damn parking brake. It pisses me off so much whenever I see a vehicle bounce off the parking pawl in the transmission.
I never use mine.
Pissis me off even more when a valet parker doesn’t use it on mine.
Same bro I let my friend borrow my Silverado and he had the nerve to park it on my uphill driveway with no parking brake 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
That’s automatic driver for you
@@JorgeRamirez-dl2hj they are designed to hold more than the weight of the vehicle. There is NOTHING wrong with using park on the transmission as the sole parking setup
Thank you. This is interesting. I did know about this because my neighbors Grand Cherokee went in reverse out his driveway and cross the street and into a neighbors car. Accident, mistake. I thought it was probably him. It wasn't.
GREAT VIDEO
The Prius has a similar gear shifter. It always returns to the same position when a mode is selected. I am not sure about the Jeep, but with the Prius, the car will automatically go into park when you turn the car off.
Glad you made this video, I thought it was an issue of shifting itself out of park after it was put in park, didn't realize it was people not really paying attention.
TBH I had a few moments of confusion working the shifter out when I first hoped in. The speedo area is busy so it's not so obvious what gear you're in and I found myself clicking into gears I wasn't intending several times. My friends also had the same experience. It's cool to try something new but not at the expense of ergonomics and usefulness.
Good job explaining that!
I just sold my 2012 JGC and bought the 2015 JGC SRT8 and noticed right away the gear shifter is totally different. It took me a few days to get use to it. I usually always back into my parking spots and driveway and it was tricky to go from drive to reverse. You just have to pay attention and not be in a hurry until you get rely use to the way this design of the shifter is. I like it because it uses less space but on the flip it is tricky to use.
every time i would get in a jeep or dodge i always hated this gear shiftier, you would have to be SOOO precise or else you will jump into some other gear. with that said i dont think there was a need for a recall, it was annoying and you had to be very specific, but its not something to recall over.
If you don't like this shifter, you would hate the one BMW uses. From park to reverse, you have to push the shifter up. For the BMW, park is a button on the top.
niuhuskieguy i have used BMW's and its far better sorted, its not nearly as touchy as this one and you dont need to be as exact or precise. (and once you learn the BMW shiftier its pretty easy)
Mercedes has a similar thing which was equally annoying.
Well since someone died I think it is
+Fancy Polak yeah and Benz shifter caused a multiple fatalities accident in nys with a train. Every one is trying to blame every one in this one. The lady was on some train tracks got confused with the non conventional shifter and go hit by the train killing herself and passengers on that train.
I have a 2014 GC Overland, I just broke 80,000 miles on it last month. The shifter is really the only thing I don't like about my vehicle. It is a crappy design.
That said, in my 80,000+ miles I've never had my Jeep roll away on me because I failed to put it in park. Ultimately the issue of rolling away falls on driver negligence, even if the shifter design still sucks.
I haven't taken my jeep in for the fix because I don't want an autopark feature every time the door is opened.
Couldn't agree more. At the end of the day, this "issue" comes down to stupid people not ensuring their vehicle is actually in P before exiting.
I did the fix and the shit is annoying. Every time I try to move forward or back a little bit with the door open, it jerks the heck out of me.
This is the reason why I would go with a 2016 and up Grand Cherokee because the the 2016 Grand Cherokee went back to the traditional gear shift design because of the complaints of the 2014-15 models.
A friend of mine recently bought a 2014 Charger with this same shifter. I drove a 2015 with the same transmission that had the better designed shifter shown in the Challenger. I made a comment that I hated his shifter when he bought it, but I didn't think about it causing issues. I told him about it and he said he doesn't care and has gotten used to the shifter. But I also taught him to use his parking brake. People just need to start using their parking brake when parked, especially when on hills. It's not good on transmissions to hold the car with the brake off. That way if they get out with it in neutral or reverse it's less likely to roll off on them.
In all honesty FCA made sure to have audio & visual warnings to let drivers know that the vehicle isn't in park, carelessness & impatience is the only blame for any false park situation.
It does both actually. The entire LCD gauge cluster changes not only color, but displays a warning in text and it makes a ding when you open the door.
I'm sorry, who looks at the dash when they get out of the car? I certainly don't I look where the door and I going. As for the audio chimes, I'm almost immune to them as they chime for every little thing - mostly seatbelt related. If they were going to put this design in the public's hands, the fail-safe should have been implemented at the start. I also can't believe that no-one picked up on this design flaw earlier - like during development? So sad that it looks like someone lost their life due to this.
Next up: High voltage electroshock feedback warning option. When they really really want you to pay attention.
Exactly. Everyone else that uses the same 8 speed automatic transmission either uses a different gear selector that is more intuitive, or has implemented a fail safe that either sends the transmission into park mode or activates the parking brake when the doors are opened.
Remember that you can't always assume that people will behave the way you expect them to behave or as designed; you need to design fail-safes into the system that will actively prevent injury or damage to property when things don't go as intended. This was just bad engineering from Fiat-Chrysler for not anticipating or installing a fail safe into their shifter designs.
While it is a stupid design and the lack of a proper fail safe is inexcusable, you really should know how the vehicle you drive operates. At this point in time FCA has mailed warnings and instructions to people so there is no longer any excuse for accidents caused by this shifter design, any accidents now are simply operator error
Whats wrong with good old fashioned linkages connecting the shifter directly to the transmission?
WHAT I HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ON MY 97 DODGE!
Also on my 97 Chevy too.
Yea! And what's wrong with these new-tangled cars also! We got around just fine riding horses and goats before some idiot engineer decided that we needed these cars. I get so tired of people always trying to improve things.
my ancestors rode your ancestors
99 1500 here
Thanks for clarifying. I wish more people read the manual.
Great video
Thanks for the wonderful explanation, I don't think people realize the failure of this design. People get in a hurry and with all the notifications, incidents happen. The FCA engineers should never have allowed this and sadly the death of one young man, has brought this flaw to light.
If other manufacturers are smart enough to design this type of shifter with fail-safes, why the fuck does FCA cheap out on their top of line Jeep?
If people are ignorant enough to not check if there vehicle says PARK then maybe they shouldn't be driving. It will chime If it's not in park and you open the door. like WTF does the vehicle need to wipe your ass too?
Yup, plus its an SUV. It has a manual foot ebrake, just like most other SUVs out there.
Shouldn't be a surprise. Chrysler went cheap on their early 2000s minivans and refused to put a shift lock because of added costs, even though it killed multiple people.
***** you mean Daimler the cost cutting assholes. Also the previous 5 speed automatic gearbox selector was not comparable with the new 8 speed. Audi used the same design. Why is everyone bashing Jeep now.
It's a shifter, it doesn't need failsafes. The user is supposed to place it in the correct position. If you can't do that, maybe you should hand your licence in.
So glad I found this video because I can't tell you how many times Ive shifted into the wrong gear or put the car in sport mode accidentally because of the way it works
Very clear explanation. Thanks.
The current Tesla is one of the cars who's selector returns to the same position irrespective of the drive selected but belongs to the group of cars you mentioned that put on the electric emergency brake when the drivers door is opened (it will stay on until a drive is selected via the stalk).
New A4 has that and I'm not a fan of it (as of right now). I really think they idea of having it moving back is really pointless and is still very new and needs more development/research put into it.
Saying the shifter returns to "neutral" after each use ins't an accurate description. I know what you're trying to say. The shifter handle returns to a central position from fore / aft manipulation, but your statement implies the transmission is returning to "neutral" after each manipulation which it isn't doing. This video may misinform some people the way you've presented it. Use of the word "neutral" to mean two different things. Otherwise a nicely produced video.
When I used to be a valet a few years ago and they came out with this shifter I was always so irritated because I'd be in a rush to park a car or retrieve it and run back to the venue and I'd be there fiddling back and forth with these. The problem wasn't figuring out how to use it or knowing what gear I was in, but if you weren't SUPER gentle it would go into park or neutral when you just wanted f**king reverse.
I got my 2014 Grand Cherokee Laredo two years ago when it was brand new. Prior to that, I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The shifter took some getting used to, and initially I would shift into the wrong gear. However, unlike a lot of the people I see on the road, I'm not texting or have my phone glued to my ear 24/7. I knew that the shifter would take some getting used to, and since I don't drive distracted, I paid attention and learned how to properly drive my Jeep. Guess what? No problems. If you can't tell that the vehicle isn't in park by the indicators on the shifter and dashboard as well as the chimes and "Vehicle Not In Park" that come up when you open the door while in gear, you shouldn't be behind the wheel. I had more issues with getting used to not turning a key to turn on or off the ignition and not having a gas cap for the first time since learning to drive in 1990 than I did with figuring out the shifter.
Almost makes me wish that there was an enforced standard for how automatic transmission selectors must work.
a joystick shifter...what could possibly go wrong?
My 2014 Chrysler 300 had this exact same transmission lever and plenty of times I shifted to reverse when I thought I shifted to park. If you aren’t paying attention you can really end up in a bad situation. They changed it to a rotary shifter for the 2015 model.
0:25 remind me of veritasium channel, love your video, i'm subbing
R.I.P. Pavel Chekov. Good going Chrysler Fait. Thanks for killing the nicest guy in Star Trek.
is it me or does dodge (and co) have the strongest history of defects and recalls
Gm is up there too.
Oh hell yea, I'm gonna be using this in my negotiations for a 2015 Jeep GC.
The recall involves flashing your pcm, tcm, rfh, and ipc modules. Essentially giving it the ability when not in park to check if the driver is in the seat, if the door is open, if the brake pedal or parking brake pedal are applied, and I think if the seatbelt is latched. If a certain combination of these requirements are not met the transmission will automatically shift to park with no driver input. Easiest 2.3 hours you'll get as a technician :)
Bad design? Aka people not paying attention when they drive.
maybe a nice push button transmission
That wouldnt be good lol
retro legacy - and it worked fine
The point is it's a stupid design, is it necessary to make it such a pain in the ass? It's horseshit
This issue is solely caused by bad drivers, not bad design. If you're parking a vehicle on a hill steep enough for the vehicle to roll, you should be manually applying the parking/emergency brake, in addition to putting the vehicle in park. If you're operating the vehicle correctly, it wouldn't matter if you left the transmission in neutral on a hill, the parking brake would keep it from rolling.
People who just throw the shifter in park on steep hills and just get out are idiots. The parking pawl in the transmission is not designed to reliably support the full vehicle weight on an incline. Every owner's manual ever tells you to apply the parking brake on hills for this very reason.
Another reason why this is bad practice is that in AWDs with open diffs, if one wheel loses traction, the other 3 can turn the diff and the car will move, even if it is in Park. You should always apply the park brake.
The parking brake should be engaged EVERY time, not only on inclines or declines. Shift into Park then press the parking brake pedal, then release the brake pedal. Simple.
*****
It doesn't matter how bad the shifter design is. If you're engaging the parking brake as you should be, then the vehicle will never roll back on you. End of story.
Blaming the vehicle when it rolls back on you after you failed to engage the parking brake is just as idiotic as blaming the vehicle when you crashed because you failed to turn on your headlights at night and couldn't see.
Hmm, a person has died, it isn't clear yet what happened, was his judgement impaired, did he apply the park brake, have other people died using regular shifters? Wouldn't that suggest that some people may make mistakes no matter the design of the shifter? Some people hate it, others like it, I find its the simplest and most intuitive shifter I've ever used. But some people are more adaptable to different design than others.
*****
There's actually a lot of roll-away accidents associated with manual transmissions from people doing the same dumb thing: They leave the vehicle on a hill without the parking brake engaged.
The moral of the story is that no matter the transmission design, there can be confusion as to whether the vehicle is neutral or not in if you're not careful. So you should always be safe and apply the parking brake before exiting the vehicle.
I had a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, sometime when I try to shift to Reverse, it went to park. That was one of the thing I hate about the 2014.
I had 2014 Grand Cherokee and I didn't have an issue with shifter. I actually liked it. When my lease was up I switched to a 2016 Durango r/t and it had a rotary shift knob which I couldn't stand.
The less electronics involved in my vehicle operation, the better!
fuck that automatic bull shit, who else here is a die hard manual driver?
Getting an SUV like this in a manual is the height of stupid bullshit.
+Icenineiv naaaa bro, id rock a manual anything. ill drive the shit out of family mini van. this suv might be more of the "luxury" but id compare it to the 4door jeeps, they make 6speeds and there sweet
only stick for me
I get driving manual on something sporty, or an actual off road vehicle, but it sucks ass in traffic. And this jeep here, it ain't a wrangler, it's a soccer mom jeep.
You "only manual" people are so annoying stfu with that shit already Jesus Christ. This is a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, they don't make them in manual so your comment is pointless.
I have a 2015 JGC LTD which I'm wondering can I change the gear shifter to the other one that I can downshift as opposed to using paddles?
Bought my 2014 Grand Cherokee 7 years ago now. Took a few minutes to get used to new shifter, but after that had no problems.
Now in 2022 and I think the safety "fix" put in place (probably a few years ago) is good, but prevents driver from having for open and intentionally letting the car roll while in neutral. I was at a mechanics shop and needed to roll back a couple of feet, opened the door and put the vehicle in neutral. It kept jumping back into park. I kept thinking something was wrong. Lol
Want until months later I realized why this was happening.
There was an actor killed when his Jeep rolled and crushed him. Can't remember his name, but I think this prompted Jeep to add this safety feature.
Chrysler thrives off the stupidity of their customers, this will not go well for them. They try so hard to be innovative and fail every time. Just give it up Chrysler and stop flooding the market with your junk vehicles.
It's not just Chrysler on this shifter. It was quite widespread during these model years.
Very true my friend. Chrysler and the whole Fiat group is a pile of dog shit garbage. The company and all those who make decisions in it are stupid, and even stupider are the people who buy these cars despite of every review and rating around the world, telling people not to buy them! If we just allowed evolution to happen, these people would be long gone.
i have had 3 chryslers, all shit. I switched to chevy and life has been great. Fiat motor group has sucked dog balls lately. Our cars were all newer models too.
Except for their higher end brands like Maserati, apart from that I would touch Fiat-Chrysler
+Agrajag72 And Fiats are even bigger pieces of shit, I work on those turds too.
Damn, what’s crazy is I’ve never had this issue with my Jeep and there’s no way I’d ever be unsure of what gear I’m in lmfao
I have a 2015 overland and I've never had this problem. Works fine if you're paying attention, like you should be anytime you're in any car.
I did not think it was such a bad idea.
I love my 2014 Jeep GC and the transmission where it is and how it operates. But now that i think about it, the fact is it can be very dangerous for someone who is unfamiliar with the vehicle.
I have a 2010 and it has the standard levers connected to the transfer case. In what year did Jeep change it?
It was announced today that dealers will have the software to re-flash the Pentastar and Hemi Grand Cherokees this Friday. The software for the SRT and diesel will come later. The update will put the car in park if you open the door and it isn't already in park.
Hope no one opens their door on the freeway!
+os opz I can that happening now that you mention it
Why would someone do that?
+Brandon Wright u let someone borrow ur car and he needs to puke out on the freeway maybe? I can think of many scenarios...
os opz The software will look at speed and whether the seat belt is fastened.
CFA engineers had too much faith in the average consumer. lol... You have to make things idiot poor these days because there are a LOT of people who don't pay attention to how things work.
I have a 2015 as of 2/11/18 I havent gotten a recall yet on my truck. I did have a lot of shifting issues when I first bought it but they sent me a usb and I download an upgrade works good now. Took a while to get used to shifter I almost got out with it in reverse after a few times I learned to look down at shifter before I got out of truck.
2020 do they offer any convertion to a more traditional gear shifter ?
i got 2014 laredo and it suck
Apparently we have a population that can drive all sorts of computer devices - cell phones etc - but can't use a very simple shifter! The mind boggles!
Honestly, this system is so straight forward, but people just want to make it out to be a huge deal!
It's easy to mess up and put it in the wrong position, that's the problem.
People just need to pay attention. Problem solved.
test drove a 14 recently with roughly 100k miles, the shifter solenoid sounded like it was approaching the end of its life and engaged into every gear with an audible clunk.
what happens if I put it in park and it says I am in park but I am actually in reverse. sometimes I can backup while the shifter and dash says park.
R.I.P. Anton Yelchin. Too bad it took a celebrity to make widespread aware of this recall. If it was a normal person who got killed, you would have never heard about it (Jeep Recall for non-owners).
So this is too complicated... "Dont use the hair dryer in the bath tub."
Come on, this a computerized gadget.
I really like the shifter and in 2 years have never had a problem.
I normally never have an issue with these electronic gear selectors and usually it only takes a second for me to get accustomed to it. But the ones that annoy me to no end are the ones on BMWs. On those, you throw the lever forward to put it into Reverse. More than once I inadvertently put the vehicle into Reverse when I intended to put it in Park only to realize the vehicle was crawling backwards leading me to slam on the brakes nearly avoiding hitting something behind me. I can see a BMW owner who drives it daily getting used to it but if you pick one up as a ZipCar and you are used to the traditional shifter where you put the lever forward to park it this can be potentially dangerous. Cadillac has an almost identical shifter except to put it in Reverse you push it forward then over to the left. Which makes more sense to me.
People can use a smartphone, but are to stupid to operate their vehicle...
But they're having trouble driving because they're using their smartphone‼️😕😕😕
Dave Well Yeah, but it's O.K. because I was steering with my knees‼️😜😜😜
oh, I'm sure people are misusing their smartphones. The difference is they don't roll down the hill and smash into things.
they do cross double yellow lines on freeways/highways and cause multi-fatality head on collisions!!!!
It doesn't have shit to do with "being too stupid". It's a shitty design that's unnecessarily prone to error.
I've had no problem with my shifter. I actually like it.
For the last ten years my vehicles have had an electric shifter on the steering column which returns to the center position after a shift is made. In all that time and all those miles I have never had a problem or mishap. Am I that much smarter or are others far less attentive when using the shifter?
When I put the transmission on the Neutral position and step down the parking brake (the far left paddle), the car is still moving, is that normal?
I own a 2015 Jeep with this shifter and I have never had this problem with changing gears. The way this guy demonstrate shifting is not really how I do it because what he's doing is confusing people. P,R,N,D/S. If I want park just push it all the way to the top until it cant go anymore. If u want drive just pull it all the way down until it cant go anymore. No need to go through all the gears. If I want reverse just look at the shifter and push it to R and then let go. VERY easy.... these morons having problems are the reasons why they put instructions on shampoo.
The problem is that people are idiots! You can't idiot proof cars. I've never had an issue with this shifter. Yes its not the best, but blaming Jeep. just typical as people are not taking responsibility for their actions.
While I do agree people should pay more attention to what they're doing, we humans, do make mistakes and the way the shifter was made makes it easier to make a mistake, andJeep should have realized that before putting it into production, in my opinion. Be carefull when calling others idiots, because tomorrow you can be that idiot.
point taken, very well said!
+Emeka Ossai 😊😊
Emeka Ossai :)
exactly no one has any personal responsibilty anymore and cant wait to blame some one else for their screw up.
Yeah I dont the shifter on my '15 GC. But really how do you get 23.4 MPG???
I'm 17-21 MAX!
I've had a 2013 and currently have a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I have never once had a problem shifting in the last 4 years. Not a very hard concept but then again not many people even know how to drive a stick.
I've driven this car. It's honestly not bad at all. People are just dumb. End of story.
So the class action lawsuit is just because people that bought this are stupid? 1.1 million recalls because people are stupid.. get a clue ass hat
Or you just buy car with manual gearbox?
I doubt that Jeep has a manual option. I don't know why anyone would by an auto Challenger though...
not too many offer that option nowadays, sad, sad, sad
your funny
I don't think its gonna solve the problem. The persons absolutely do not know how place the gear in selector. Operator choose R to move forward or maybe leave it in first gear and leave from the car or press the clutch to stop or brake pedal to accelerate.
My wifes 2014 SRT Jeep didn't give us that option...
the 1st one who explains it clearly. I am a summit owner. you just need to be used to with that gear and know how it operates. :) appreciate the video guys :D
I own a 2015 Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 Hemi (of course) and have had zero problems. Either with the shifter or with the vehicle.
That shifter is in my moms jeep, it's neat looking but I like to call it the shit shifter because it's confusing and shit. Even the Chrysler 200/300 is electronic but it works so much better
I love the shift knob.
The shift knob/dial might actually be a good solution. Just don't make it return to center after you select your setting.
Wait what, recall because people are lazy to check if the car is secured before they open the doors and leave it? WHAT? And why would anyone suddenly change it into wrong gear, there is no reason to take it out of Drive unless you really know you need/want to go in reverse, and in that case you'd look where it's in.. You even said it has audio feedback, it's shown on dial in which mode it is, and there are even those P, R, N, D highlighted on the dash.. I don't see how this can cause accidents, if you wanted to talk about stupidity, you should have covered VW's dumb idea to put reverse and 1st gear in same position(talking about manual transmission). It wasn't once that i saw people earn scratches and dents in parking lots or hitting something else because they wanted to go in reverse but dumb shifter actually engaged 1st.
Idiots will be Idiots. Now Jeep has a bad name due to this 😕. Not a fan of american cars but its a dumb thing that people percieve as a safety issue and now they stay away from jeeps.
😐
1000% agree! People are really hopping out without ensuring it's in the correct gear? This is NOT Chrysler's fault, IMO. The design is legit.
Lol they need to learn how to use a car first
The fucktards are real 👆🏼
One thing I did was I always check the dashboard what gear I was on.
this is a really dangerous design I work at enterprise and Boss accidentally backed up into a fence cause he thought he was in park
the moment you release the brake pedal n the vehicle moves, you know you're not in park or you can yank it all the way forward to ensure its in park and that gear indicator in the dash are there for a reason. Use it! One common issues with auto transmission is stepping on the accelerator pedal instead of the brake and you crash your car. Its the driver's mistake not the car's.
If you're on level ground and you go to get out with it in neutral, it may initially remain stationary long enough to make you think it's in park. However, it can eventually begin to roll once it picks up enough momentum if there is a slight incline.
You can just as easily step on the accelerator rather than the brake with a manual transmission vehicle as there is the introduction of a third pedal. This confuses a lot of people. Your argument is invalid and has nothing specifically to do with auto transmission vehicles.
+LiveTrash you hv juz answered urself. with the third pedal ur car aint gg anywher without releasing it even if u stepped on the Acc pedal uninttentionally, unlike in an auto. neva heard of ppl crashing their car in a manual bcoz they stepped on the wrng pedal.. u probably had not driven a manual before
+LiveTrash n regarding a rolling vehicle when in neutral. its the driver's duty to ensure its in park n the parking brake is engaged. Its the driver's fault for not ensuring its in park mode. thats what the gear indicator are for. to see which gear ur in n if u dun utilise those factory installed instruments, den god cant even help u.
You are right. And common sense isn't that common. Sorry FCA thought humans were smarter. What's the difference in driving a manual and not knowing if it's in gear or neutral. It's the drivers responsibility
I find it very hard to take anything you say seriously when you spell like that. If you want to argue my point then spell properly, otherwise move along.
The only problem is that it isn't idiot proof. This day and age people are just to lazy to learn or be accountable for their actions.
lee hancock It is impossible to make a system completely idiot proof. Idiots are too ingenious.
Exactly! As i mentioned in an above post, I personally own a 2015 GC, and the shifter is great. Very simple and quick to use. Plenty tactile enough for any idiot to use. If people are having issues with selecting the correct gear... they need to be more aware of what they are doing... if not, perhaps they shouldn't be driving full stop. Ie: A responsible driver would check to see if there is a car in the lane next to him/her before they want to change lanes... same as a responsible driver would make sure (and should be in habit) of making sure they have the vehicle in Park, with the hand/foot break engaged, before they even touch the door handle to get out. If they aren't doing these basic things... that isn't the manufacturers fault, or the cars fault... it's the user!
EXACTLY!! I love mine too! (2015 JGC Overland) Took some getting used to (shifter) but doesn't take long and it actually IS intuitive.
Amen Sir. This is the dumbest fucking country I have ever been to. People seem to thrive on being stupid as shit here.
obviously some people have no business with a driver's license. my wife had a 2014 GC and this was a non issue. the car gives more than enough feedback to let you know what gear your in.
I own a 15 gc limited. If i try to leave the car in any gear other than park. It puts itself in park when it detects the door is open
I never had an issue with my gear shift. Maybe I'm in the small minority that looks at which gear I'm in. A couple days ago I tried to make my GC roll back, but I was only successful when I rushed to put the GC in 'Park' and not look at either the gear shift or the display screen. I feel sorry for any one injured or killed, but someone has to not play attention for this potential accident. When I bought my GC I was having a conversion with with salesman and I said someone going have an accident because of the gear shifter. I had no idea it would get to this point. It's a lesson to car companies and other businesses(included my own) Always dumb down either your product or wording for your product.
Yep! They have to make the cars FOOL-proof, accent on the fool.
Typical Chrysler..... even in this modern age they still have transmission problems.
I have that gear selector for my 2014 charger r/t I also got the letter from dodge stating that I need to bring my car in
do you think if I do that they will change the gear selector completely ?
Nope, it is a software fix to engage Park if you open the door and it isn't in park.
+Ben Ponting thanks for the info man 👌
Is this any zf 8speed? Like in 14 chargers
