Thanks. Just picked up an R7 and this lens. As a professional portrait shooter, this is why I tend to favor crop sensor cameras. 85mm is my favorite focal length and a 50 becomes an 80mm on a crop sensor for a lot less money than an 85mm lens. Im not obsessed with bokeh and blowing backgrounds out but as your test shows, you still get more than enough of it with the R7.

I have the R6 MK II and this lens - wow it's so creamy smooth with the bokeh. I have more fun with the 24-70 but this little guys is sharp.
Still shooting with the R and enjoy using the RF 16, 50, and the 85. Each have proven to be very sharp for me. I would like to get the RF 35 as well.

Thank you! Do you use the 85mm a lot? I would be tempted to get that and the 24mm 1.8. 35mm is a little close to 50mm and it may be a little redundant for me.
@@JaredHoyman I use the 85 mainly if I’m shooting portraits. Also use it for macro quite a bit.

Great video, I've been using this lens since I started with the R system. I wanted native RF lenses and this lens is really great. I want the L lenses but right now I rent them. I went backwards lol, I bought the professional bodies(R, R6, and R6 II) first and use the cheap Rf lenses. For my weddings I rent the 28-70mm which I really want, and 15-35mm for video work. I own the 16 1.8, 50 1.8, 35 1.8, and 85 2.0. They work really really well, 95% of brides and grooms can't tell what equipment is used to capture the beautiful pictures.

Thabk you! I wish canon would allow lens IS only option and ability to disable ibis. It's great for some lenses and horrible for others.
@@JaredHoyman the sensor would still shake with the ibis . I just want canon to make a true successor to the EOS R. No ibis, big battery, top screen and the original mini hdmi, not the micro

I don't know if I would call it Super Sharp. The lens has acrylic elements to keep the price down. It's missing a lot of the micro contrast you would find in an all glass lens. Thumbs up on the video.

I did play with this lens on the R6 II, and i do see a lot of amazing things about this little lens, but Bokeh is definitely not among them and one main reason i won't use that for portrait.
the bokeh is actually okay on this. obv 1.2 is more ideal though. But are you saying it's really not workable with this lens?

hey i’ve been filming concerts as a hobby on an old hi8 cam and finally decided to improve the quality and buy an hd camera, would the canon xha1 be a solid option? found one for around $300. i’d be filming in low light a decent amount
Wow those have come down. If you are coming from hi8 I would at least buy a used 70D and find a couple cheap lenses. If you need unlimited recording for a concert look at the R10. Buy nice or buy twice. Canon xha1 was great 14yrs ago but you will get cleaner looking videos on today's dslr or mirrorless. Not to mention a lot lighter.

If you go full frame then R6 II all the way. I love the r7 and it makes a great second body but if I can only have one it would be R6 II.

The 85 f2 rf would be good for portraits on a full frame, but since you are shooting on a crop I would suggest shooting with the 50 1.8 RF for portrait. For photography of items that could be close up or the object is a little big so you need larger framing I would probably lean towards the Canon 35 1.8 RF or even the 24 1.8 RF Macro. It’s not as loud as the original but it’s also not ultra sonic like the L series. If you have talent mic’d or boomed you probably will not hear it.
@@JaredHoyman camera good for interview set up? i already have the c70 and r5c. can match color easily in post?
@@Dreamcatcherlou the color will mostly be contributed from the camera's and I'm pretty sure the c70 and r5c can match pretty well. Canon glass is pretty consistent in color rendition and contrast so you shouldn't see a huge difference from any other canon lenses you may be using. I think this lens would make an excellent choice, especially on a budget, for an interview lens. How do you like the c70 and r5c? Which one is your favorite and why?
@@JaredHoyman c70 is definitely better for video due to the flat cinematic look. but the r5c is great for wide-angle shots where detail is necessary. These cameras are a great combo. I'm also getting the r6 mark ii this week. i also want that new c400!!!

@@benedwards5503 check your local canon dealer and use that same promo code, because the promo code is Canon Directly. I would think it would work still wherever you decide to buy the lens.
I think Canon screwed up with this lens. After renting the rf50mm f1.2 for a handful of weddings I couldn’t justify the price vs this, when I’m primarily on 24-70 or 70-200 for almost everything anyways. This lens is an absolute steal at the price point.
Even when not on sale this lens is amazing for the price. Totally agree!
