Wrath of Khan saved the Star Trek franchise. When the opening notes of Alexander Courage’s original theme were heard, the audience in the theater I was in that summer in 1982 went absolutely batshit. I cannot over emphasize what an exhilarating moment that was, because right then and there we knew that Star Trek was truly back!
This same reaction must have occurred all over the country. Exact same thing happened in a theatre in Ft Wayne Indiana, summer 1982. Wouldn't have missed it for the world!
@Scott Gammans You can make a very strong argument that Wrath of Khan brought the franchise back to glory, but in terms a saving the franchise, the original film saved it. Until the ‘09 reboot, The Motion Picture was the most financially successful film. Since the original show stoped airing ten years before the original film came out, only people who either viewed the show remember it fondly. This inspired CBS and Paramount to make more films, and bring in a new show in 1987. So Wrath of Khan didn’t save the franchise, but very strong arguments can be made saying it brought it back to glory.
The Motion Picture is still this trekker's favourite. Seeing the full size of the Enterprise, in her glory. The later movies did not take the time to give that girl her proper screen time, in my opinion.
Silvestri is good but John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Basil Poledouris, James Horner, John Barry, Bill Conti, and Vangelis were/are in classes by themselves. Of those, Conti, Vangelis and Williams are the only ones still alive.
"This is Admiral Kirk, we tried it your way Khan you game for a rematch? Khan, i'm laughing at the Superior intellect." --James T Kirk at the Battle of the Mutara Nebula
I always thought the composer nailed the sound of Star Trek with this. 1:50 - 2:30 sounds like the graceful passage of a starship, and the mysterious beauty of space and the unknown.
I saw "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in the theaters and, like so many others, was pleased to see the classic crew on the big screen... but was left somewhat unfulfilled. Then... came *this* masterpiece. They had me at *Kobayashi Maru* - and for the first time ever, a space battle with the Enterprise taking serious hits, and factoring in the three dimensional nature of fighting off planet. Now, every time I hear this theme, I remember "he was the most... *human...* ", and how I thought "Holy SHIT - Shatner actually took some acting lessons...!" 😏😄
Best. Star Trek. Movie. Ever. Followed by Star Trek First Contact. Both movies utilized the human side of the story more than all the gadgets, gismos and high tech. Wonderful!!
He tasks me! He tasks me and I shall have him! I'll chase him round the moons of Nibia and 'round the Antares maelstrom and 'round perdition's flames before I give him up!
Oh man, it appears you aren't John WIlliams the prolific excellent film composer and assistant conductor of the BSO. You had me going there for a minute.
@@megamanfan3 I was commenting about the commenter with screenname John Williams, not the composer of this track. I was aware that this was not Williams
Ah yes, I love all of them too. But, have you ever watched all 6 movies back to back in a cinema? I have, it took all night and I walked out early the next afternoon, blinling at the sunlight. Every break, the line for the coffee and the line for the loo were both a mile long. But I loved every single minute, even the desperate mesures to stay awake. I'd do it again in a heartbeat. : D
As a die hard Star Wars and John Williams fan... I always found the theme songs to the Star Trek Movies epic, beautiful and perfect for the films... I'm proud so have seen this movie in the theater.
Loved all 6 but II is the best in my opinion! When I saw it there wasn't a dry eye in theater when Spock died, not one!! Put them back in the theater, how many times has Lucas re-released star wars I mean please!
Oh, my ex husband was the assistant manager of the cinema I think it was at the same time as number 6 came out that Gene Roddenberry died, and my ex thought that it would be a good time to organise it in memory of the creator of Star Trek. He put the idea to his manager and he was told to go and organise it. Fans from all over came to Norwich and a good night and morning was had by all. So much coffee was drunk, so many conversations, so long was the que for the loo. : D
One of the best movies of all time. One of the greatest sequels of all time and the best Star Trek movie ever made. My Favorite Sequels: 1. The Dark Knight 2. Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan 3. LOTR: Return of The King 4. Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back 5. Terminator: Judgment Day 6. Top Gun: Maverick
Kirk: [hailing Khan] This is Admiral Kirk. We tried it once your way, Khan, are you game for a rematch? Khan, I'm laughing at the "superior intellect." Khan: Full impulse power! Joachim: No, sir! You have Genesis! You can have whatever... Khan: [grabs Joachim in anger] FULL POWER! DAMN YOU!
I like that James Horner has variety. Put it this way, this music is by the same man who did the score of Titanic. Absolutely brilliant composer who was taken too early from us
Quite possibly my favorite film score of all, and that’s saying something in a world with John Williams. This is such an indescribable masterpiece, definitely my favorite Star Trek score.
Couldn't agree more about the JJ Abrams thing. He ruined Trek with that "Kelvin Timeline" garbage. He didn't have enough respect for Roddenberry's vision to stay within Star Trek canon.
Well... it wouldn't surprise me if the artist who drew the poster had no idea about the script. Maybe he or she thought it would be cool to show the Enterprise shooting at something... and didn't bother to check whether it made sense or not.
This music is THE BOMB! Love it, love it, love it. Someone made a comment some time ago, that this music was a rip-off of Korngolds 'The Sea Hawk'. It does sound similar in some movements, some elements are alike. A riif here, a passage there, a stylized trill and so forth.

Just saw it a few weeks ago with a meetup group at the George Eastman Dryden Theater in Rochester, New York. It was great to see it again, and we had a lively discussion afterward at a coffee place. Kudos to the Dryden Theater! A short time later thay also showed Galaxy Quest. (My first time.)

@@TheMan05555 I can see that POV.
5 years later, Star Trek TNG went on the air and would redeem the Star Trek 1: The Motion Picture's main theme in many a Trekker's eyes.
The Motion Picture is still this trekker's favourite. Seeing the full size of the Enterprise, in her glory. The later movies did not take the time to give that girl her proper screen time, in my opinion.
I always thought that great artists like James Horner and Alan Sylvesteri didn't get the recognition they deserved.
+Dr. Olympus To me, they belong up there with John Williams and Jerry Goldsmith.
Blake Kneipp Well after Titanic, Avatar and the Avengers saga, I’d say they both got quite a bit of recognition :)

Yes.... that's one of the themes that I always hear in my head when I think of Star Trek.
My favorite of all the Trek themes.
Mine too.
Me also
Same, here
I like them all :)

One of the best star trek themes, I miss the 80's.
The 80's was the real Trek in cinema and music altogether! The 80's will live long and prosper!

Dan Judge This is tough....
Farewell Mr nimoy much loved by all sadly missed.
I liked this theme... very nautical... that, and First Contact are my 2 faves...
'Hornblower in space'
As a die hard Star Wars and John Williams fan... I always found the theme songs to the Star Trek Movies epic, beautiful and perfect for the films... I'm proud so have seen this movie in the theater.
The great James Horner composed this music. You may know him for composing the music for Titanic, Commando and Avatar. Great great composer.
The Mask of Zorro, Braveheart, Aliens, Field of Dreams, Glory, The Rocketeer, Jumanji, etc...
Kenneth Crain And Battle Beyond The Stars.
And of course, Krull
Er. "The Land Before Time" for me...
This is epic, and it is also masterful.
Happy journey, James Horner.
The best Star Trek movie ever, superior to the JJ's movies.
*T.J. Hooker re-runs* are superior to Jar Jar's movies!!
Yep, movie fights!!!
RIP, Jame Horner
This price reminds me of how wonderful it was to be 10 years old in 1982
I heard this performed live by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. Absolutely breathtaking.
this is i think the best start trek them song there is.. 4 is ok too but this one is the top of the list

Tim H No kidding. That was very tear jerking, especially when Kirk said that Spock was the most human soul he met in his travels.
Goosebumps.
Best trek : OTS
Next gen
Wrath of khan
Search for Spock
Undiscovered country
First contact
(2009) reboot
It’s not a Star Trek movie without a James Horner score RIP
Or Jerry Goldsmith also RIP
They should use this theme for a future Star Trek series.

Leaving to go anywhere ( pre 2020) on a journey always had this in my mind
After 2020... whenever I go somewhere... the theme I have in my head is probably a track from Mad Max: Fury Road. 🤣
The best of all the Star Trek themes :)

Couldn't agree more about the JJ Abrams thing. He ruined Trek with that "Kelvin Timeline" garbage. He didn't have enough respect for Roddenberry's vision to stay within Star Trek canon.

Nicholas Meyer saved the franchise that time before Leonard Nimoy took over as director.
R.I.P. To The Original "Saavik". Kristie Alley 1951-2022
I adore this, it ties with the Motion Picture/Next Gen theme as being the best theme.
On what occasion was the theater showing all 6 movies? The 40th anniversary?
Best Star Trek Opener ever!
I had a sickness bug in the 80's and watched this amazing film and it sort of healed me, it was that good.

Mr. James Horner, you are missed.. amen.

I don’t know why, but Horner’s Star Trek theme just gives me a kind of Miklós Rózsa vibe.
