Man, I wish more RUclips channels would say this exact thing. When I first got into fishing I got baited into buying expensive rods for specific techniques by popular bass fishing channels, thinking that if I didn’t I was doing it wrong
Best video on RUclips for fishing advice. Thank you. This is all true stuff and needed to be said. I’m 70 and just retired and taught my son at a 4, the basics. Today he a far better fisherman than I. Why, because he fishes often with what is available to him. Thank you again.
You are so spot on. All a person really needs is like 3-4 rods and you can do almost anything. Now, if you want to pick up you're landing percentages, that's when you start fine-tuning technique specific rods. I like how you keep it real with your viewers
30 years ago!? You just broke down my current tackle box! lol. I don't think I'll ever have a motor boat, but I LOVE fishing. Thanks for keeping it simple for all of us. As we used to say 30 years ago, you're so rad! lol
yea, talk about confusing. Took a 40 year break doing life. Sold my ATV. Family talked me into kayaking. I'm hooked. Getting back into fishing, I listened to you guys, purchased just about every baitcaster rod weight and action. Come to find out, Ultra light gives me the happy place. Man I love panfishing with UL. Shopping begins again. Saying that, my favorite baitcasting rod is a 7'6 mh, mf. Lets talk line. I got so confused, I just put braid to mono or flouro on everything. Thanx Brian.
I began watching B-Lat after my wife bought me a boat in late 2020. I have so many rod and reels set up on your advice. Love your honesty and content. My favorite fishing guide.
You are one of the best I've seen man , I love the realism here and making things more simple for rookies trying to soak in all the knowledge without headache.
What's good B-Lat I have been fishing my whole life but only have used spinning reels up until now but I did just purchase my first baitcaster(Lews Mach 2) so I'm really glad you made this video because yes it's really confusing trying to decide as a new baitcaster user which one is right for me because all i have been hearing from RUclips videos is if you throw a spinnerbait you need a special rod for that, and if you throw a crank bait you need a special rod for that and it just seemed like whatever lure I wanted to throw i needed to purchase all these different rods but after watching this video it was good to hear you say that i really don't need all those different rod setups especially as a newbie to the baitcasting world. So thank you for this video and all your videos. God Bless and Tightlines
Thanks BLat for another practical video. I've been outfished by someone with a stick and a line tied to a hook. When we don't overcomplicate fishing, it's fun, it's that simple. Such a great perspective you've shared! Peace & Blessings
Great video. With no industry standard for power or action, yep it is confusing. …. I agree with everything you say. Id add to find a budget point and then buy three rods. 1-spinning rod M/F, 2 - casting rod M/MF, and 3 - casting rod MH/F. I do have 4 additional rods that are technique specific for how I fish, but my core three allow me to cover multiple techniques and all hook types.
I build my own rods and have built a few for specific lures. That being said you could fish 90% of your bass lures on a 7ft Med weight, med fast taper, graphite bait casting rod with 15lb Mono. Fast taper if you don’t fish lures with treble hooks. The mono and slower taper will help keeping treble hook baits pegged and the stretch of mono helps the fish get Spinnerbait better. Line stretch between mono, Flouro and braid can be used to compensate for power and action of a given rod.
Absolutly the best advice, new to the game and all my questions you answered spot on. This is what i needed to get things started... Hats off to you for making it real
Just a bank guy who fishes evenings and weekends. I started down the route of a specific rod for everything, then decided it was too much stuff to carry. I sold everything off and started again. Got myself all mid-range gear. Orochi/Levante and Zodias/Expride rods. A medium spinning rod. A heavy, medium-heavy and glass casting rod. I throw everything on those four rods. I honestly don't think anyone who just does this casually needs anything else. My rods are plenty sensitive and light, and if I slip on a rock and break my rod, it's not a 1000 dollar NRX.
Great video! I’m just getting back into fishing after spending 30 years working and raising a family. The amount of information out there is overwhelming and I’m looking for some simple fishing for dummies videos just to keep things simple so I don’t get too overwhelmed or confused.
Well said. Focus ALL of your effort into learning where and how to find fish to begin with. Then figure out how to get bait to where they are. Absolutely NOTHING else really matters until you can find fish. My nicest, most expensive set up doesn’t catch anything if I’m throwing into dead water. My cheapest combo catches plenty when I throw to fish. And honestly, even what I throw to them doesn’t really matter that much. I still tend to overcomplicate things, because that is how I am, but I am learning more and more that a LOT of what is on the market these days is designed to “catch fishermen” moreso than to necessarily catch fish. I pond fish from the bank and I’m finding myself carrying less and less “gear” on/with me. A couple of rods and two, maybe three confidence baits, a pair of pliers, and a small scale, and I’m beating the banks throwing what I have to higher percentage spots. It is SO much more enjoyable than messing with 3-5 technique specific rods and three bags of baits and tackle, and I’ve caught more bass this year than I ever have in the past. Great video Brian, as always. It needed said!
I got serious about two years ago, and started out bank fishing. I would bring everything I had. I would also try to fish for multiple species at a time. The 2nd to 3rd most important thing I would recommend, after being able to find fish, is determining and narrowing down what species youre targeting and stick to it. If bass werent immediatley hitting I would break out the worms for bluegill and bream. This year I vowed to not buy anymore worms and to dedicate myself to catching bass. I can see the improvements, but its a long process. It also helped that I bought a small boat.
I’ve been fishing for years, and have always used bait casters since learning how to cast those. But I always whip out my Zebco push button reel I keep around for the nephews at least once or twice a year. It’s just a blast and it’ll take you back to your roots. Nothing wrong with simplicity if it works 🤷🏼♂️
Good advice...I personally scrapped the technique specific rod & reel combos since it was getting expensive and opted to just have a rod & reel combo specific to the type of fish I want to catch...an ultra light/light spinning rod for panfish/trout, a medium light all-purpose spinning rod for panfish and small bass, and a medium spinning rod/medium heavy casting rod for bass and larger fish like catfish or carp.
Amen!!! Fishing is simple and most make it hard!!! I catch fish all the time. My granddaddy used to take us hunting and fishing all the time when we were little children!!!
I still have a spinning rod and reel combo I bought from Bass Pro in 2002. It was over $150 but under $200 if I remembered correctly. It’s their brand and it’s still my go to spinning rod and reel to this day. I have a dozen rod and reels and it still can out perform my up to date equipment. It’s never let me down. Never broken and spins like new. It was the first rod and reel I bought for myself when I got a good job and could afford something better.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. As a very new, very amateur bank angler on a very limited budget, I can't afford the 6 different rods that you, Tyler Anderson, Tyler Berger and Alton have all told me I need. I buy a couple of lures every season and that's it. 2 bags of soft plastics or a popper one year, a chatterbait and an assortment of 2/0 - 5/0 regular, WG and EWG hooks another year. I catch maybe 10 fish a year. I no longer have an older brother who I used to call Skipper because he used to call me Gilligan or Little Buddy when we'd go fishing for walleye or muskie (never caught one) in his boat. I don't have a roommate that has a boat like I used to. I have to make do with what I have and that's the escape from the real world that fishing provides, the memories of my brother and my dad when he was able to join us, the loons and bald eagles catching more fish than me, all on a bait caster and 2 spinning rods. Couldn't tell you the power or action of any of them. Thanks for your content, I appreciate you.
I totally agree! That's what I tell kids all the time! I tell them they don't need to spend crazy money on rods or reels and to buy a decent $50-$80 rods between 7' - 7'2" MH fast or moderate fast because it's the most versatile Do-All rod type. As a Florida boy, the ONLY technique specific rod I think anyone needs given the heavy grass and pads, coupled with lime rock ledges and boulders are heavy jigging rods because you actually NEED a sort of BROOMSTICK to be able to retrieve your jigs through all that type of stuff. HOWEVER, a 7' - 7'2" MH Fast can get the job done, but you may end up overworking such a rod over timed eventually eyelets might pop out of the guides or you might even break a rod. But realistically speaking, for a while, you can make that singular rod do the job "well enough". Pssshoooot… When I was a young teenager, I mowed some lawns on crutches to be Abel to buy my very first Baitcasting rod & reel and the rod was a good ole (new at the time) one-handed PISTOL GRIP Rod sold at Eckerd's Drug Store (my old school Florida people KNOW!!!) and my very first bait caster was Bill Dance's Daiwa PT33P which he advertised on ESPN Outdoors for a couple of years. THAT'S IT!!! I fished Texas rig everything, crank baits, twitch baits, Spinner baits, Jigs, WHATEVER… That ONE Rod did it all… Because as a broke kid who's parents didn't care one bit about fishing… It had to! They didn't buy me my setup and they sure as hell weren't going to buy me a 2nd one when that one caught me fish all day, every day.
I see you got some Level rods. I recommended those as part of a selection of new rods in your rod sponsor video. They are really nice and not so expensive to break a budget.
Good stuff, case in point my favorite rod for top water lures is labeled as a spinner bait rod. Rarely will I buy a rod online initially I like to go to the store see how it feels, how the tip reacts etc… if I am replacing a rod then I might order it online since I know the history of it.
I was smallmouth fishing, spinning, light line, underspin, small 3 inch Keitech swim bait when a 24.3 pound 49 inch northern slammed it. Took 15 minutes but I landed it. It’s true, you don’t need 20 rods because sometimes, you don’t have a choice in the matter.
I grew up fishing with Berkeley Cherrywoods. I still prefer to use them. My $70 Fenwick broke the other day and reminded me why I prefer to use cheaper rods
I just started fishing 3 weeks ago. My wife and i went to academy sports and bought 2 zebco $25 rod/reels. Bought a can of night crawlers and went the lake. I caught 3 bluegills that day. 1st time in my life catching a fish. Wife didnt catch one until i retied her line and baited her hook. She caught a bigger one than i had on her very 1st cast. We fell in love again that day. It started dumping rain on us and were scrambling to get our gear back in the jeep. When we got in soaking wet we looked each other and bussed out laughing. 25 years married and we just started fishing. Definetely a bonding experience😂😂😂
Hey Brian, I'm gonna start f8shing Lake Hartwell in September. What top 5 lures should I use to just put some fish in the boat for September. Any advice would help me out.
I've noticed with all the personal channels...Realism of fishing is coming back to life. Started watching alot of pros again. I had switched to original RUclips content creators because everyone had started mimicking each other in the professional fishing. They all turned into car salesmen.
When I was a kid in the 50s, everyone I know (including me and my dad) only had one fishing pole. I started with a cane pole that did not even have a reel on it. I am 71 now. I have about 14 or 15 now. I make my own for fun.
wow, I wish I saw this video a month ago. I am just getting into fishing, and I have wasted so much money and time trying to get the "perfect" everything.
A good rule of thumb is to start fishing with what you have, and only buy new things when you truly understand why you need it. Or more specifically, understand how and why it will benefit you over what you have.
When I was a kid, I was dirt poor and had 1 spinning rod from a tag sale. I caught thousands of fish on it and didn't know the difference until I was grown and could afford to have 20 different rods. Now I meet people who clearly don't know how to fish, but they're packing multiple 300+ dollar combos and think 4 bass is a good day. The right gear only matters when you're proficient enough to maximize it. It's like buying a thousand dollar guitar when you can only play 3 notes from an entire song.
The best way i learned was getting hands on. You can explain why you dont use a medium light spinning rod for "top water" sure! Its possible to catch one. But instead of listening to people tell me. You cant so this and this is "why". I decided to try it for myself..i remember trying a top frog in heavy covered lillys, with a medium light gx2 Ugly Stik. And, after each hit trying and trying and trying and trying again to set that hook..it just wouldnt work. I caught 1 out of 10 hits.. I eventually felt and seen what these guys talk about when they speak about medium/heavy. You must learn from experience of failing to learn to be better. Its about making it easier. Not harder. Now im using a SICK STIK Medium Heavy 7 2" the latimer special for my top water...which is glorious lol😂
Thats what im talking about brother having them kids exposed to fishing thats nice how your boys are moving up in fishing from that push button my boys doesn't want to they told me there good using that push button
The most important part is to go fishing! But the 2nd, 3rd and 4th most important thing is being able to find fish. If you can't find em you already lost.
This. My most expensive combo don’t catch fish if I throw to dead water. My least expensive set up catches fish when I throw where the fish are. Period.
For a year I only had a medium and 12-15 pound mono and I cranked on it jerked on it flipped on it frogged on it even thrown a magdraft on it almost broke it but it thrown it
Man I remember the days getting backlashes on my first baitcaster. Nothing has changed except when I got backlashes then I blamed it on getting adjusted now I just get pissed cause it’s definitely my fault at this point 😂
He’s not even lying you can hook em on anything at all I’ve hooked em on my first ugly stik I’ve hooked em on tiny rods and I’m currently hookin em on an upside down spinning rod with a baitcaster on it just go fishing grab some rod grab some bait and get after it
You preaching in this vid. People make fishing so complicated when it doesn’t need to be. I probably caught more fish as a kid in a cane pole. Just fish and you’ll catch.
To add on There's no point in obsessing over the labels of the action of a rod because there's no standard. Med heavy fxfast shimano Is not the same as a med heavy fast st Croix. And if you haven't learned and felt why you want these specific rods and reel combos you won't know the difference
And a lot of it are the ones who are sponsored by rod companies. They want them to push selling you an expensive rod because they say you have to have it. It’s all about making money
There’s no such thing as a “beginner” fishing rod. The only thing that separates a beginner from an advanced fisherman is a beginner knows every rod you need for every situation and an advanced angler knows you only need one rod for every situation. You’ll catch all the large mouth bass in the world on a medium fast rod with a 2500 reel.
@@BrianLatimerFishing I think you’re the 1st professional angler that I ever heard mention that brand. Traditionally I have never seen a single add for the H20 brand which means you have to shop at Academy to know about them. Just giving you a hard time. Love your content.

Man this right here!!!! Please do a part 2. There are so many options that it's overwhelming.

I have 22 fishing rods and plan on adding more 😂
Good video man
When I was a kid in the 50s, everyone I know (including me and my dad) only had one fishing pole. I started with a cane pole that did not even have a reel on it. I am 71 now. I have about 14 or 15 now. I make my own for fun.
You should come to Washington and get into some trout and salmon.
BIG FACTS!! 🦾💯
wow, I wish I saw this video a month ago.
Yup. Keep it up
The best way i learned was getting hands on.
What microphone do you use Brian?
Thats what im talking about brother having them kids exposed to fishing thats nice how your boys are moving up in fishing from that push button my boys doesn't want to they told me there good using that push button
You can get a number 3 mepps aglia and a medium spinning rod or medium light and go out and catch fish
Love those old tackle boxes. You would get it all organized then you or someone would accidentally dump it and all you terminal and baits go to heck…
Here’s my advice, just get a casting 7-7’3 medium heavy. You can pretty much power fish any bait with that rod.
You gonna use level rods?
The most important part is to go fishing! But the 2nd, 3rd and 4th most important thing is being able to find fish. If you can't find em you already lost.
This. My most expensive combo don’t catch fish if I throw to dead water. My least expensive set up catches fish when I throw where the fish are. Period.
Bravo .....
I refuse to use a Ugly Stick combo and that's that. 😆 🤣 😂
My kinda video. 😎
He’s not even lying you can hook em on anything at all I’ve hooked em on my first ugly stik I’ve hooked em on tiny rods and I’m currently hookin em on an upside down spinning rod with a baitcaster on it just go fishing grab some rod grab some bait and get after it
So much truth in this video Brian so many people thing the rods will make them catch fish . That idea is so far from the truth.
Back to the basics, but mentally, I just can't do it. My name is Andy, and I am a tackle addict
You preaching in this vid. People make fishing so complicated when it doesn’t need to be. I probably caught more fish as a kid in a cane pole. Just fish and you’ll catch.
I've been telling the truth about fishing for years especially to the youth!!! Fish the way you want!!! Nothing is wrong to be honest!
Brian don't you love them white flies on orange lake. Been fishing there my entire life and I think they're more annoying than biting flies
Knowing what gear you need, requires experience on the water.
Brian your telling the honest to god truth. But you going to lose more sponsors lol😂😂
To add on There's no point in obsessing over the labels of the action of a rod because there's no standard.
Med heavy fxfast shimano
Is not the same as a med heavy fast st Croix. And if you haven't learned and felt why you want these specific rods and reel combos you won't know the difference
I've caught more crappie on a cane poll than I have on anything else.
The Coca-Cola people will be mad at this video.
If only we could make that logic apply to women and shoes!
Wait I am surprised he knows what a h20 brand from Academy is. 😂
Why is that?
@@BrianLatimerFishing I think you’re the 1st professional angler that I ever heard mention that brand. Traditionally I have never seen a single add for the H20 brand which means you have to shop at Academy to know about them.
Just giving you a hard time. Love your content.
