I love that Andrea didn't mind playing the ugly woman. You need some serious self confidence!!
Andrea Martin is actually very beautiful (as is Catherine O'Hara) but they both are confident enough comedians to play goofy or ugly characters.
Man two brilliant comediennes!
How do you know she didn't mind? Are you her spokesperson?
They're obviously both pretty women, but the difference is that Catherine is conventionally pretty because she meets western culture's beauty standards of blonde hair and blue eyes; therefor, Andrea (with her dark hair and dark eyes) by default plays the ugly woman. Of course, Andrea also had to mug for the camera to sell it.
Andrea played ugly because comedy comes first.
For all the sctv/Catherine O'Hara clips I've watched, its thos one that made me realize she was the mom in both Home Alone and Beetlejuice!
I knew a woman who cut her hair short "because too many guys thought it was beautiful when I had it long"
Maybe she was single by choice

Sketch for sketch, SCTV was always funnier than SNL. Being of the age to have watched them both from their first airing.

@@lahaza6515 No question about it. SCTV was brilliant and used more enduring themes on which to base its comedy, whereas SNL largely used what happened to be in the news that week. SCTV did have the advantage of time for writing, rehearsal and editing. But for pure richness of comedy, SCTV was the best sketch show of all time.

Couldn't agree more ! I grew up in this same era and I ALWAYS thought the SCTV work was far more " polished " and a stronger overall cast .

Something about Catherine’s character in this skit reminds me of SNL’s Roseanne Roseannadanna. She’s channeling Gilda!
