This is such a great video! This is exactly what my lactation consultant taught me, and I was having such a hard time explaining this to my husband (not allowed in the hospital because of pandemic precautionary measures) and I'm so happy he will have this as a good reference :)
It basically means the tongue has limited range of motion due to being connected to the bottom of the mouth too tightly by the sublingual membrane. It can affect speech, too, if severe and left untreated.
The tongue can be connected to the floor of the mouth by a thin mucous structure called a frenulum. When it’s too short or tight it limits the movement of the tongue and we call it tied. I teach a class on this if you want more information. Go to LALactation.com to sign up
I watched other videos and she is very gentle with babies. They all. Seem to like her. No latch. Keeps losing it. Some babies simply won't breast feed. It is to hard for them.

Hello, can the suck get better with training even if we don't release the tie? My little one has a posterior tie. however the pediatric dentist feels that the functional mobility of the tongue is good and it can wait. her suck is very poor and chomps on my finger. lot of clicks and dribbles milk while eating

Did you mean cotton or bottle? In the '70s when I had my 6, 5 living children; they insisted on giving my babies bottles. This made them refuse to nurse because milk comes out of a bottle easier. Jackie would have starved herself rather than nurse & thru horrible fits. I finally gave up at 4 mts. I only used a bottle for water & many parents don't realize that babies get thirsty, especially bottle fed babies. I insisted on no bottle in hospital to my Dr's. w 6th & finally wá able to successfully nurse her until 18mts when she started biting me!

They have a reflex and instinct to suck, but some times the suck is disorganized or not efficient. We can teach babies to organize their suck and to be more efficient at getting milk.
All babies do these things as an automatic reflex. Or if they don't, there's something wrong. These reflexes are checked in the hospital right after birth. Google "What reflexes do infants display?"
I didn't know this was a big problem.. interesting. I would recommend no strong anything on mom like soap and deodorant. Soap residue tastes terrible and the strong scents can cause many problems.

As a hospital trained healthcare provider, yes, theoretically you could stick your washed finger in a baby’s mouth. But this is not my baby. It’s my patient. And wearing gloves is still standard care for medical employees when working in other people’s mouths. Yes, I have the parents just wash their hands and use a clean finger. This is a one time demonstration to the family.
