2018 Volvo V90 / V90 Cross Country Review and Road Test In 4K UHD

- The station wagon is truly the original crossover. With the driving dynamics of a sedan but a bigger cargo area on the back, an estate (as they call them across the pond) makes a great deal of practical sense. Unfortunately the allure of a higher seating position has left wagon sales in America at an all time low. But that hasn't stopped the Swedish brand synonymous with wagons from deeping four wagons on their American menu. Joining the V60 and V60 Cross Country for 2018 are the all-new V90 and V90 Cross Country, the practical variant of the new S90 sedan.

8 out of 10 for the front seats??? I guess you really cannot understand how good Volvo seats are unless you've had a severe back injury, like me. I've seen at least one reviewer of Volvo's new line-up try to explain this to people who are young, or who have not had a bad back injury. They just don't quite understand. Volvo built their front seats with the input of orthopedic surgeons, and they're a masterpiece.
I agree, I have had two recent Volvos (I rate them 10) and drove the XC90 with what I assume is the same seat design. 10/10 there too. My X5 with sport seats is a park bench in comparison. maybe a 6/10. And it costs 50% more!

Alex is pretty hung up on 4 way power lumbar. I have never used the lumbar in any vehicle in my life.
And not to mention they are extremely narrow (hence the great leg room for rear passengers). A comparable 5 series BMW front seats are twice as thick as the ones in a V90, yet the Volvo seats are much more comfortable and offer the same high trim tech. This is really a class leading seat design in the V90.
There are actually three seat options on the V90. They have weird names but basically they have one that is hard and carved out for the R-Design, one that is more flat and sculpted for comfort on the Inscription with Nappa Leather and the standard seats, which use the same shape as the Inscription upgraded seats but have less padding and less forgiving leather.
I think the cross country has the standard seats because they are a mix of comfort and sportiness (Offroad type driving would benefit from this). Alex rated 10/10 on other Volvo models with the more comfortable seat option.
This was a very well done review. You touched upon so many items disregarded by other reviewers, such as the location of the radar, the small storage space under the rear floor, and the details of the steering wheel buttons. Thank you!
I'm in my early 30's and I absolutely LOVE VOLVO's. Always had, the 850's first and then the V70's that later followed. None of my friends or family like the brand or the models and I'm sure they represent the common american buyer. I've had sports cars (911, corvette, xkr etc) but I think the wagons are gorgeous and after i rented one I wouldn't mind driving it every day.
Alex as always an amazing job! I truly appreciate the detail you get into and always learn something. Great work!
The V90 looks much more attractive than the competition, including the E400 wagon. If I was in the market for something of that size and style it would be my first choice.
Justin Reid I would use that money to buy a used e63 wagon with bumper to bumper warranty
Agree, that mercedes in the final comparison/as a first choice looks hideous compared to the volvo ;)
If i have the extra money, i'd get the E400, if not, V90 is also still a great choice, and i do find all new Volvo models are very attractive.
Referring to the MY17 or '18 Merc E400 as "hideous compared to the Volvo" is a bit much don't ya think. .. All of these wagon's are a 4 box design to which there isn't an endless design path. .. The most recent Volvo designs that's exterior and interior are striking, I'll give ya that. .. The Volvo engine pallet consisting of a singular 4cly architecture begs further study. .. One 4cly version operates with two forced induction types which can be complicated, and more so considering the dealership service tech hierarchy. .. Recall the days when Porsche Design AG was Volvo's accomplice in engine creation and very much in the background. .. For that era, the inline straight 6cly as example fitted to 960 wagon, was a thing of beauty. .. Cheers, M/S out
From the picture shown I do not find the Merc' beautiful at all. The front just looks limp and the line from the lights to the rear window has a slight curve that doesn't work for me. That the grille stands proud of the lights looks wrong to me and the rest just looks like a generic wagon from the late 2000's.
Though it should be noted that as a Scandinavian I am biased.
I wished wagons would become a thing again in the US!! At least hatchbacks are making a comeback
Tech Defender Doesn't really have to be a thing. You just have to buy one, enjoy the practicality and uniqueness, and support the manufacturer in the process! If the Mazda 6 Wagon was sold in diesel form in my country, i would've aimed to own one one day.
If sedan sales are dying, wagons have no chance.
Not unless gas prices become ridiculous again. Everyone and their mom will immediately ditch SUV for hybrids & EV when that happens. Until then wagons will continue to remain a minority in North America.
Modern crossover SUVs are basically raised wagons with a higher roof height. Really, just photoshop the side view of V90to have a higher roofline and presto! Modern crossover SUV Bullshit.
Tech Defender would love a rwd, manual wagon.
Superb review on a beautiful, intriguing vehicle. Also, kudos to the 4K. Looks incredible on my Galaxy S8 Plus.
Volvo has been on a roll since the new XC90 was introduced and this is another solid entry. I hope for a XC60 T6 review when possible. Good job as usual Alex.
Great channel for descriptive reviews. Well spoken, edited and informative. Thank you.
Carol from Australia. We have always loved Volvos. They are unique cars.
Can we all agree that the 5 series GT is horribly ugly? Just terrible
Blake Swan ahh my fellow FB car commentator. Cool 👍🏽 Yes I definitely agree with your comment
Blake Swan
Absolutely!👎
Not to me it has amazing practicality
The Volvo v90 is my favorite wagon as well as my favorite Volvo
I ordered one and we LOVE it!
Elizabeth Cline u still love it?. I ordered one today.
Your vids are amazingly thorough. So helpful.
Let me say it again. People have no individuality when it comes to automobiles. They buy what everyone else is buying. Dare to be different and people try and tell you Volvo are overpriced but in the same breath they drop 35k on a RAV4 or CRV.
You see a lot of these cars in Europe.
Well said. To add to that, wagons are still not popular here in the states. What a shame.
Polestar Wes Yes, they’re called sheeple.
Polestar Wes If the car don't sell and you blame the consumer for it. You've lost!
The American public is fickle about cars. Practicality often takes a back seat to "looking cool or powerful." This is the reason Americans are so hooked on trucks and SUV's. When I see a guy in an escalade or 3/4 ton pickup, I automatically think he's trying to compensate for a tiny or impotent penis.
Very nice detailed review. I wish more reviews on RUclips were like this.
Beautiful wagon and style direction. Wonderful review Alex!
Volvo are doing so much great work these days!!
Love the new designs.
Had a v50 and 70 before. Loved the cars! Stationwagons are amazing and such good looking. Better than sedans...
Great looking car. Thanks for covering it.
C O V E R I N G ?
I cannot agree that the Mercedes seats are better. No way! The E class estate seats gave me back ache, something I have never had in any Volvo.
Absolutely right! The hysteresis requirements at Volvo are insanely high and only a few of the big seats manufacturers are able to meet them.
Also, Volvo seats have seven different foam types in the seats compared to three in the Benz E-class.
Just drove a V90 and new E class back to back 1.5k miles on a ski trip. The Volvo seats and general interior feel beats the Merc E class hands down. Not saying the Merc is not good, it is really great - but the Volvo just feels a generation ahead. The seats are industry leading.
+1. .. Agreed. .. The seats were excellent. .. We drove a demo MY17 E400 wagon demo vehicle for an entire day; 68mi.
All the MB seats from the past until this day is crap. Soft and hard at the same time. I just hate them.
I drive a v 90 r design and find the seats very narrow and a bit hard.Great car though
Thank you for the review, I am seriously considering purchasing this vehicle.
Bravo excellent video one of the best Volvos yet
Excellent run down, Alex. Thank you.
I think the V90 and the Buick Regal wagon are both lookers. I'm surprised you didn't mention to some of your newer viewers about your past video about your adventure on ordering & acquiring the V70R back in 2006. Maybe a link?
Great video and information, thank you!!
Well done review!
Hope it will be my next toy....
great in-depth review as always, can we please get an Audi A4 review? 2nd Attempt
Volvo has styled this car absolutely fantastic! minimalistic approach everywhere. Front, side profile. Even rear all feel soothing to look at. Otherwise many of will be busy all these aspects. Even interior is good without being hiiting on face. No led theme trim lights running through out interior which always looks to me a aftermarket thought . Glad Volvo doesn't have. Nice review. Only gripe people may say that tad underpowered or low engine specs. Volvo should offer more powerful or more cylinder version of their line up. Nice review. Very detailed.
Excellent detailed review and information. You know infinitely more about this car than the 3 different Volvo dealers I've talked to. The only content missing from the review is information on the proprietary hitch and towing capabilities of the V90 CC. Most likely because they aren't selling a lot of them so they haven't focused much energy on understanding the car and it's competition (or lack thereof). Volvo has clearly failed miserably in their go to market with this car - I am the perfect target market for this vehicle and am only now realizing (partially based on some of the info you present in your review) some of the differentiation relative to the market after researching it for about a year an talking to multiple Volvo dealers. Upon my initial review/research, this just looked like a vehicle with a 15-20% price premium to the competition (allroad, Q5, Q7) but there are some things that are more interesting. But there are also some trade-offs - such as the proprietary hitch, which forces the customer to chose between towing capability or hitch-mounted accessories (such as a bike rack).
I really appreciate the devided screen...... a lot of people just film themselves talking in the driver's seat
I have one and love it. The best Volvo that I have ever owned (I had bought three Volvos before this one.)
saw one ,,, went out to buy one ,,,, looked at the engine options ,,, and stayed with my old allroad.
This car is beautiful on so many levels
You V70 R was incredible, I miss that car.
A terrific review, lots of valuable information and analysis. I think I'll end up with a V60 T5 Inscription with the 4-C and Polestar suspension. The V90 seems too big to me and, as Alex has pointed out, that makes it less nimble. Beautiful cars, though, and I'd only buy one built in the US or Europe.
I've watched a number of videos and I think we're going to buy one of these next weekend. I use an all terrain walker which requires a lot of cargo space. But, I'm also short so getting my walker in and out of an SUV is cumbersome because they are too high off the ground. We decided that a full size wagon was the best option for us but, sadly, there aren't many to choose from in the U.S. We purchased a Ford Flex two years ago because it was as close as we could find to what we really need without spending over 50K. After driving it for two years, we realize that it's not a great fit for me and it gets terrible gas mileage. I like that this Volvo has plenty of cargo space and a lower profile than an SUV, but it still has a sporty appearance. It doesn't look anything like the wagons that all the mother's drove when I was a kid. It's time to bite the bullet and purchase our first ever luxury automobile. This will be our biggest purchase other than our house! It has taken nearly a lifetime to realize that sometimes it's better to go ahead and spend the money on a better product that will last longer and retain it's value. You'll save money in the long run. I'm fully prepared to be bashed as unpatriotic, but I trust this vehicle more "because" it's foreign made. I've owned over a dozen cars in my life and, by far, the best quality I ever owned was a Honda. So, there you go.
Why was the first one you uploaded deleted?
hmm is that a camera in the volvo logo at the front.... I think u didn't mention it.... I guess it's just a part of the 360 camera system
Excellent! Very comprehensive! I’d ask to sponsor your program, but I own a distillery. No need to elaborate...haha. Nevertheless, I’m a raving fan. Thanks.
Very informative.
Alex (or anyone else!), does Volvo make the V90 in a long wheelbase version available somewhere else besides the US? You mention that V90 only comes in the same length as the shorter wheelbase S90 in the US, but I can't find info anywhere indicating if it's possible to get a long wheelbase V90 in Europe or Asia. Thanks!
Yup Volvo wagons are just awesome. Full power full luxury super solid and rugged. Quality to the max. And fast.
Is the 2019 V90 getting the long wheel base since the 2019 S90 will only come in LWB? Can anyone confirm that?
manual polestar cross country version anytime soon?
props for being a P2R owner,ONE OF US! ONE OF US!
I'm switching from a sedan (BMW 640ix GC) to a "crossover" because I want better visibility, higher ground clearance (so I don't keep scraping the front bumper or running into parking curbs), a more manageable length (for easier parking), and more carrying capacity. Volvo XC60 seems to fit all these criteria but the V90 CC does as well with the exception that rear seat legroom is minimal and, more importantly, it's a long car (from my perspective, since it's about as long as my current car); I wanted something about 185 inches. I realize that's not possible with a wagon, it becomes a tradeoff between having something that is less "upright" and has to some degree sedan handling and driving around what I consider to be a larger car. To show you how analytical I am, the fact you can get blackout window surrounds may be the deciding factor. :)
When will you review the b9 A4 or latest Q5?
Alex, do you intend to test the Cadillac XT4 Sport?
Great video! I'm confused by the claimed 19.7 cu ft of cargo space however. I compared the V90CC cargo space to the A4 all-road and MB E400 wagon with a measuring tape at an auto show and found the V90CC to have the largest cargo space by far (including the sloped back window). Would love more info on this.
This is the official Volvo rated size based on SAE measurement procedures. It all has to do with the slope, we fit an additional 24" roller bag in the E400 for instance
Thank you for your prompt reply! What is strange with the 19.7 cu ft number is that the A4 has a similarly slanted back window to the V90 but a clearly shorter trunk. However, Audi claims 24.2 cu ft.
Alex PLEASE REVIEW CAMRY 2018 and EQUINOX 2.0 or GMC Terrain 2.0 2018!
i seen a few of the e400 station wagons on the road, the bmw gt but thats it for that stuff. i really like the xc90 but thats a video for another day.
I cross shopped a V70r back on the 90s, and went w a 96 DOHC cobra instead. I am trying to get me wife to consider. She likes the new Q7, which is really cool (for an SUV)
Alex, I have noticed that you often mention tire width as a factor in handling performance, particularly braking. While tire width is an important metric in handling and braking, tire design and composition is often just as important (if not more so). A narrow high performance tire will out perform a wider all-season tire in most conditions, except cold-weather performance, which is directly related to tire compound and design, not width.
Good to see the safety stuff moved to a much less obnoxious location.
Killacamfoo O.G. Yeah, sad that now anytime you break your windshield it will now cost you closer to $2000 to replace and not $200. -owner of a glass company
I mean, the windshield just has to have the correct tinting and cutouts near the camera. The system is separable from the glass.
Why the re-upload?
Hey, Alex how was/is reliability and cost of ownership on ur previous Volvos u owned? I am considering a 2014 or 2015 XC70 but i am scared about cost of ownership on another European vehicle. I currently have a 12 year old Mercedes and maintenance is a nightmare 😫😫😫
It seems that between the manufacturers they have decided since sedan sales are dropping, we are getting more wagon and hatchback options again. Volvo and Subaru have stuck it out with wagons over the years, but GM (Chevy and Buick), Audi, BMW, and other nameplates are coming back with both those designs again. We will see if they actually sell and stay around - hope they do.
what is the difference between the 2.0L turbo and the 2.0L TC/SC???
2.0L turbo - 250hp
2.0L turbo & supercharger - 316 hp
I think the Buick Regal TourX could have at least been included in your size comparison chart.
Plain and simple: People are not willing to give up the commanding position, more vertical space and better view of the road that CUVs offer all while having more less the same performance & mpg. We are not Europe or the rest of the world for that matter, TUFF luck for wagons on the land of the SUV and CUV(USA).
Personally, i would love to own one, specially when my current ride it's not even worth $1500, I love being dirt broke !
Great work as usual, Mr. Alex !
P.S: They need to cut using the misleading badges, there's no more turbo 5 or 6 cyl engines anymore, only crappy and strung out to the Moon 4 cyl time bombs waiting to detonate as miles go by.
And i hope they took care of their crappy transmissions giving up the fight at less than 50k miles.
Hey Alex, why reupload?
The V90 is absolutely the best looking car among it's competitors -BY FAR!
Can you please review the Subaru Impreza?
Where was this filmed? that road was wicked...
Excellent! :o)
I love station wagons. The Volvo V90 via Overseas Delivery is the best thing on the market. Plus, station wagons are phallic. I quite enjoy phalluses... Giggity-giggity, station wagons!!
Those are sharp cars, but 300+ horsepower from a 2.0L engine doesn't make for a long-lived combination.
how does it have less trunk space than my focus.
My favourite
Subaru Outback has eyesight which is mounted in windshield first. Not as expensive a car either albeit not as luxurious, but arguably more rugged awd system
The T8 Hybrid is starting this late summer in Europe.
Very nice car 🇸🇪👍
I would say, that the V60 is more comparable with the Audi A4. It also has a Cross-Country configuration.
Just found out there is no aux input on the 2018 V90 CC in the US. Sadly, it's been deleted.
it is an aux/usb an all that shit in the mid rest. whatever u Call it
Not in the 2018.
A used 2017 v90 cc is about 40% off the mark as of Feb 2021. I’ll trade in my XC70 for a V90 CC sooner or later.
XC70 is king!
Any plans to review the A4 Allroad Alex?
What? No comparison to the BMW 3 Series wagon? I know it's not quite the same, but it seems to make more sense than the 5 Series GT.
The 3-series is considerably smaller and the direct competitor to the V60 wagon. If Volvo didn't have a V60 then maybe it would make sense to make that comparison but as it is a 3-Series to V90 makes no sense. They start about $10,000 apart, one is much larger, etc. The 90 series is a direct 5 series competitor so the 5GT in lieu of a 5-series wagon is really the only valid BMW comparison
How much does it cost
I am thankful for a station wagon. I do not like SUV styling or height and have zero need for a 3rd seat. While I enjoyed my XC70 this has a more car like ride and the styling is fine. I also like the lower roof line as it makes loading my kayak easier. The increased safety features were also a big draw.
At 4,300 lbs or is almost 600 lbs more than a Regal TourX. Giving them similar performamce results in accleration.
One bad ass wagon
Great video but also would have liked the Subaru in there for comparison. Not like there are that many station wagons around and they never left the market.
The trouble with a Subaru comparison is that there were few cross-shops according to independent data back with the old XC70 and with a $30,000 price gap I really don't see many true V90/Outback shops.
What a timely wagon overview. .. The '90's era Volvo 960 wagon we'd order didn't age very well - this was our first Volvo experience. .. The Volvo Denver techs deserve an A+ addressing the many squeaks and rattles. .. The wagon proved not to have the level of refinement expected from an upscale Volvo. .. Our first and last Volvo. .. A performance Audi '95.5 UrS6 Avant soon replaced the squeaky 960 wagon. .. Okay fast forward a decade + and we're eyeing the 2 German made -US market available wagons; The Audi Allroad (A4) and the MY18 Merc E400 wagon. .. Agree with Herr Alex, get carried away with the option list of either at your own peril. .. A MB w/luxury body version, w/pkg 2 option, Acoustic option, Air Body suspension option, metallic grey exterior, rear seat heat and air bag options, with the No Cost MB Tex interior. .. This spec level positions a E400 wagon in the $78,000 MSRP area. .. As a spec. ordered sale and several MB dealer's price our spec'd wagon in the high $60,000's. .. Not an overly stupid price level for a wagon we'll own for well over 10 yrs plus. .. Our ole MY95.5 Audi S6 wagon (UrS6) with RS2 mod's was the uber ski wagon day in - day out over its 10-year daily driver duty. ..
Weird how it didnt age well. I see 900 series volvos on the road all the time, very often with no rust or anything.
Would you purchase a Volvo S90 or a Buick LaCrosse? I plan on keeping the car about 8 years. Reliability & Safety are major concerns.
U can see it everywhere in sweden
How could that not have simple buttons for the heated seats..
I do love wagons course you can get Wagons here if your life them two inches (5.08 cm)
soooo many stupid comments I cant even begin to.....
from people who never drove a volvo, or at least not a recent model, and most of them surely never test drove THIS car, but hey, yapping on the internet about things you dont know, is all too easy.
TheArrogantOne no dude, 4-cyl engine usually ppl do not want in this class. Deal with it.
The 4 cylinder delivers, but in a coarse way some people do not like. I didn't mind it, but went with the I6 R design instead and love it. At the higher price point of the V90, that would have been the proper engine choice.
TheArrogantOne Exactly, most ppl just don't understand how to appreciate cars inside out. Volvo active & passive safety quality, chassis design (especially for Cross Country), interior design and many more. V engine is a rare breed nowadays with the market demands, but still some Germans are still making em. But if 0-60 is the goal here, then after trying T6 4-cyl Volvos, sub 6 sec will just do more than enough on almost any cases.
@@SagaAcademica nothing wrong with a 4
Alex! Are you going to do the XC60 anytime soon?
Just did it today.
It will be interesting to see how that SC+TC 2L engine holds up terms of reliability. To me, it seems like all that "charging" would put quite a bit of stress on the engine. Other than that, I think this is a gorgeous car and I wish I could afford one! Great review, Alex!
7:32 - holy seat tilt Batman!
Awesome car , people worry bout reliability and maintenance costs
People who have to pay for cars with their hard-earned money certainly should worry about reliability.
I wonder if that leather will wear similar to my old 850 turbo? lol
2023: unfortunately they dont offer the V90 wagon at all anymore in Canada but I assume its all NA that they discontinued it.
I’m in the UK and If I had to choose one I’d buy the Volvo V90. I love the shape and seats in the higher spec. I thought the new Mercedes CLS would be better but it looks the same as the other Mercs. In the UK I think the Volvo have an air of a more educated buyer gets them. My son loves his new shape 5 series and although it’s a nice big car. I wouldn’t have one.
I do miss the styling of the sharp rear end of the V70
I'd personally have the V90 R-Design.
This is my kind of review
Honestly though, how much do one need that extra cargo space had it not been a sloped window? It may not be as practical as the older V70 but if you can't fit everything you really need you're one of the odd few. For everyday use the design over cargo size is not a sacrifice.
As far as I know, the 2017 S90 and V90 are both built in Sweden. While the 2018 S90 will be built in China with the longer wheelbase. Will the 2018 V90 also come in with the long wheelbase, built in China? Would that make it the second car imported into North America from China, behind the Buick Envision?
