    Volvo is currently really impressive in its 4wd and TC management. smooth and quick reaction. Now in some situations letting the wheels spin a bit can also be an advantage.

    Again, a test that is pleasure to look at. No dramma, no pain, just systems doing their things. No instant reactions, but just good enough.
    Some hiccup in audi in auto mode, but otherwise both cars performed well.

    Volvo сделал то, что не может сделать ни Прадо ни Паджеро Спорт 3. Это достойно уважения. Когда я увидел 3 ролика под колесами - я был уверен что но Volvo ни Ауди не справятся с этим. Ауди далось это с большим трудом.
    Volvo просто поразила. Это новый УРОВЕНЬ работы awd!!!

    This summer I sold my 90cc diesel (looks identical to this one). Although I loved it, I expected it to lose against Audi in this test purely on German reputation. That said, I went to Switzerland, Italy and Austria for winter holidays and I was blown away by the performance in the snow. On couple of occasions we were the only ones moving over snow covered mountain passes (Michelin). Effortlessly at that. We had 500 km of snow covered autobahn too, not a single problem. I should also mention that the drive shaft, all axels and the haldex were replaced in the first two years of ownership 😬Thanks for the test.

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers They were replaced because I noticed vibrations around 30 and around 130 km/h, also when accelerating. Everything was replaced under warranty, it was a new car. In the first year, I had axles and driveshafts replaced, in the second year the complete haldex was replaced. After that, I had a year and a half without any issues.

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollersBut, unfortunately they do. The buttons in the boot for folding rear seats were not connected from the factory. Must have been a Monday morning car :) Now I have a Tesla which is also exciting to own in this regard.

    I'm an owner of a 2020V60 CROSS COUNTRY, I always thought Quattro was better but apparently I was wrong. The Haldex system in my Volvo just as good maybe better. I live just north of Boston, can't wait for a big blizzard didn't have one last winter!

      on rollers.. maybe is better that pseudo permanent awd fwd, but in REAL, for snow or slippery conditions, that allroad will be at lightyears better.. check it.

      @@deverenfogle3201 i checked every winter, when i climb until 1720m rolling on forest road, which are snow covered. I use a torsen t2 permanent awd system and usually those which use that garbage "awd BADGE" -permanent FWD for supermarket shopping..need to be helped to pass many sectors. That if they dare to try climbing until end of the road, but that is hapen rarely, most of them leaving the cars at 1200m.

      on some dirt and gravel driveways and paths I found the v90 T6 effortless and surprisingly capable. Om the highway, very smooth and soft... not to mention the luxury.

    What you see again and again: smooth Audi Torsen Quattro with actual force distribution in 0 ms between front and rear. Fantastic! This makes it very active on the road. The Volvo with hang-on system all-wheel drive is well programmed.

      0 ms only front/rear and only up to TBR ratio. Here much more is needed so actually both cars must rely entirely on electronics - in such case haldex is much faster.

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers That's right. Whether Audi wants to go fast is not known at all. Smoothness is the key. Every manufacturer has his own ideas here. I can only say from experience that in the right terrain the electronics work very well in combination with the mechanics from VW /Audi /Mercedes. The rollers are nice to look at what happens, but they miss the reality a bit.

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers Yesterday I have tested an Q5 45TDi (3L TDI 231 HP / 500 Nm)) with Torsen Quattro and a BMW X3 3.0d xDirve (265HP / 620 Nm) on a wet grassy hill. The Audi reacts totaly schmooth, the BMW reacts with harshness if you interlock it (front left and back right is no grip). Both cars drive up the slope, but with different reactions.
      Then we tested the acceleration of both cars on wet roads. According to the data sheet the BMW needs 5.8 sec and the Audi 6.7 sec, so the BMW should be clearly faster. It should also be significantly faster on wet roads. But this was not the case. Up to 40 km/h the Audi was even slightly in front, up to 140 both were equally up, only after 140 km/h the BMW pulled away. Why? At the start, the front axle of the BMW had to fight for traction. The xDirve system could only react after it detected the loss of traction. Disadvantage of every "hang-on-system". On dry roads, the BMW is programmed in such a way that the Launch-Control Start is 100% successful. If the conditions change, the system is at a disadvantage. When going to Audi there was no noticeable loss of traction - because the distribution of power happens in 0 ms. Both cars have identical weights (we weighed about 2t).
      We waiting for snow and test again - but then it depends a lot on the tires. Let's see... :-)

      @@KCKNV If Bmw system could only react after the loss of traction was detected it only means that system is reactive, not proactive. All up to software. It should do exactly the opposite - always start with awd engaged and disengage it only in certain situations.
      I also understand that both cars had the same tyres. If not - no serious conclusions possible.
      PS. What version of xDrive was that? "Classic" one or "Ultra" one?

      @@4x4.tests.on.rollers That's what it does. It has been programmed for dry road. The xDrive does not know it is wet. So the power distribution is initially 50:50 (or 60:40 rear/front for BMW?) until it notices that there is no grip on the front axle due to the wet road and it distributes more power to the rear. At that point the Audi is already in front. The same thing happens with the Tiguan on the rear axle (we also tested 240HP TDi 4Motion). Also a reactive system. Pro-Active only works under one condition and that is usually the dry road. That is still the advantage of the Torsen Quattro, it is pro-active and reactive at the same time and it doesn't matter if it is wet or dry.

    For the money, I'd say that the 3-1 test you performed a few weeks ago on the Suzuki Grand Vitara 2.7 V6 in lock mode is near the top of the list...if I don't see positive engagement in 1-2 seconds, then I think the engineers have more work to do to replace the mechanical LSD

      Actually Grand Vitara worked amazing in 4L LOCK. But it also did great in 4H LOCK.

    Nigdy nie rozumiałem fenomenu audi i ich napędów. Jest to tylko stara legenda z rajdowych modeli, jednak jak widać chińskie volvo wypada lepiej od niesamowitego napędu Quattro.

      Jeżeli się przyjrzeć bliżej rajdowej legendzie, to Audi zwyciężało tylko i wyłącznie z samochodami RWD, co więcej - w 1983 przegrali mistrzostwa z tylnonapędową Lancią. Natomiast z konkurencją 4x4 udało im się wygrać jeden rajd.

      you should watch the comparison of the v90 vs the outback. Same result as here... V90 is better, and more efficient with more power.

    Before you sound like an ignoramus and insist that the A6 now comes with Haldex, read this. The 3.0 Diesel comes with Torsen and 8 speed auto as engine is over 500Nm of torque, 2.0 and 3.0 gas have ultra with 7 speed s-tonic dct. Ultra is not the same as Haldex. Ultra is not even made by the same company (ultra is made by magna powertrain while Haldex is now made by Borg Warner). Also, ultra is only for vehicles on the MLB Evo platform (so not transverse engined models as these would be MQB vehicles with Haldex if AWD) with engines producing 500Nm of torque or less that also come with the s-tronic transmission. That is why the A8 still uses Torsen, as even though the base engine has 500Nm or less, it uses the 8 speed auto and ultra is not made for this transmission. Quattro ultra features 2 clutches to disconnect the propeller shaft from the drivetrain and therefore disconnect the rear wheels. The first clutch is mounted in the transmission tail shaft. There is also a claw clutch in the rear axle differential to disconnect the right rear half-shaft and eliminate unnecessary rotation of the differential ring gear. These two clutches are required to facilitate the cessation of rotation of the propeller shaft. This eliminates the parasitic drag from the portion of the drivetrain rear of the transmission. When in FWD mode, the only portion of the drivetrain rear of the transmission that will rotate is the differential bevel gears, the half shafts, and the wheels. Obviously no drive torque will be applied to the rear axle. Haldex also features a clutch, but it is mounted ahead of the rear axle differential, not behind the transmission. As a result, when the rear wheels of a Haldex vehicle are not engaged, there will still be parasitic drag losses as a result of friction and the rotational inertia of the propshaft.

      Bez różnicy. Sportowy dyfer nie działa jak lsd (nie zmniejsza różnicy prędkości obrotowych pomiędzy kołami), działa dokładnie odwrotnie - zwiększa tę różnicę (nadpędza tylne zewnętrzne koło w zakręcie aby niwelować podsterowność).

      @@imperia777 Toyota. Actually it wasn't manufacturer but one of European representatives. The problem was with comparison of Rav4 Hybrid vs Rav4 petrol. Luckily hybrid version belonged to private user, so it is still on the channel.

    After watching few of these you start to pick up the tactics for torque transfer when they apply brakes on the wheel thats slipping on the same axle as the wheel with grip. Volvos system seems exellent on that area... Its really simple procedure to compensate the lack of an lsd

      @Martin Svensson I suppose its the style of manufacturers in some level. In the xDrive vs quattro winter test the bmw shined on the curves even with TC on unlike the audi which had its braking kick in at every corner killing the fun... As seen on other videos the Volvo too seems to be agressive on situations where you are trying to have fun by cutting the power which can also lead to catastrophic understeer. It might be the future of awd variants to have a button for it when your stuck to activate the extreme torque transfer braking.
      So what I meant at first that the volvos system is exeptionally responsive with the torque transfer but it might not be best for all situations of everyday driving

      @Martin Svensson Similar system is present in Xdrive BMWs since mid 2000's. EBD(Electronic Brake Distribution) in combination with ABS making them (in theory) able to shift 100% power on a single wheel. Having BMW X3 myself I can tell its not gonna do miracles, but it does help a lot in certain situations.

      @Martin Svensson The xdrive seems to do well on these sort of tests too but the v90 is just faster and reacts with less throttle input compared to bmw and audi. I have no doubt theyll get going irl too cause the roller set up is exeptionally hard with zero traction and the hole the slipping wheels sit in

      No współczesny haldex elektronicznie zepnie naprawdę szybko, jednak w drogowych warunkach torsen będzie zawsze lepszy. No może poza większym spalaniem

      Не важно торсен или халдекс, в первую очередь на таких авто это работа электроники. ВАГ на текущей MLB-evo к сожалению ликвидировал блокировки как класс.

      Ice, especially black is very similar to rollers. Snow may be very different (deep, mild, slush etc.) so it will be different in each case.

    Now, how does the result of this artificial test translate into real life driving experience? It is seldom that you have 10 times more traction on one wheel. Hanging on two wheels is the worst case scenario in rough terrain, but one wheel? And most of the time you just need good traction on snow, stability in corners, neutral behavior when accelerating and braking with the engine. That's where Audi or Subaru may still be better.

      That's correct, one wheel with full grip and three wheels with zero grip is just a test situation. However - that is not an unusual situation in real conditions when three wheels are spinning and fourth is not due to resistance/grip it has.

    I hope you guys manage to test Forester e-boxer one day :)
    I realise the chances are low, since there might be only few driving on Polish roads :)
    I was shocked to learn how long it took Subaru PL to bring new gen Forester to Poland. It's in the USA for few years now...
    Saying that, the old Outback is still sold in Japan :)

      I'm very disappointed at Subaru Poland. :(
      They have done similar things to TFL in the USA after they shown how the CVT cuts power down.
      Subaru often seems too emotional. To bad, as they still have a lot to prove, especially in the EU.
      Also, the models on the Subaru Global Platform offer very good value for money for people who want good AWD. At least in Japan and USA the prices are very competitive.
      I like the Forester but I think there is something seriously wrong with the management.
      I also try to be realistic towards the brand and I have a list of things I'd like to say to the main management... mostly to grow a pair and to start acting like a traditional Japanese company. :)
