In all my years of playing SMB, I never knew that lifts did not count against chain stomps. I'll have to see if this still applies in SMBDX, as it would allow for much higher scores to be possible in Challenge Mode. I seriously learn something new about SMB every time I watch one of your videos!
I remember having a fun time trying to get as many 1-ups as I could with the star in 3D World 3-7, because high-value enemies like hammer bros end up just adding three to your current chain level in that game too (200+400 can become 1000+400 or 200+2000), and the way that interacts with stars (which reset the chain every 8 enemies in 3D World)... I actually forget.
Mario games will be 42 years old this year (this July) if we’re counting Donkey Kong (1981), and though he was technically called Jump Man in it, he was retroactively named Mario soon after. I just hit level 50 in life. 😂 I’ve been playing games since 1976. Pong in 76, Atari VCS in 1979, ColecoVision in 1982 (all because I needed the DK pack-in game!), but getting the NES Deluxe Set in 1985 was a life changer for me. I wasn’t able to get SMB until February 1986 (I was 13) I had all the time in the world to play it, and worked a 🗞 paper route in order to buy new games for the NES. What a time to be a kid gamer. Those were the days… as they say. 👍
When I played SMB1 on SM All Stars, I was having trouble with world 8, so I got myself to 8-2 and painfully set up the infinite one ups trick on the second koopa on the stairs. It was totally worth it though, as it gave me enough lives to comfortably finish world 8. If only I could beat 8-4 in the lost levels 😥
on smb1 twds the end of 8-2 there is Another staircase with a jumping koopa that i was able to do the infinite lives trick on both nes and vs smb versions!

Didn’t realize that stopping a shell doesn’t reset the kill combo counter in this game. Probably would’ve been a little broken in later games where you can pick the shell up after.
*You have just exploded my childhood brain of my 1992 days* , when I have discovered this shell trick into the stair wall all by myself back then; no guide. Such a weird staggering feeling. I thank you.
Awesome video - I didn't know about a lot of these tricks and we will definitely try some of them! And we LOVE magic spoon - our daughter has Type 1 Diabetes and Magic Spoon has been a GAME CHANGER for our family! I cannot say enough nice things about them!
I knew some of these tricks, like how standing on sprite platforms doesn't reset your stomping combo (which is more well-known in SMB3, but doesn't work in SMW, where sprite platforms do reset your combo). Also, in SMB3, it takes 9 combo hits (not 8) to start getting 1-ups, since the point values for both stomps and shell-kills go 100, 200, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, 4000, 8000, 1-up. Anyway, really nice 10-life combo in 3-2 at the very end of this video! (Man, I miss SMB35, which that kinda reminded me of, where you could easily fit dozens of sent enemies into a shell-kill combo, especially in world 3-2.)
0:38 I did that many, many times on the second quest, same for 2-1, you can do that when you have the second quest, but you've got to be pretty quick, because it comes down fast.
The locals in my region, back in the 80s, referred to the shell stomping trick as "turtle tipping." I've never heard the phrase used again since then but it was a cool name for the trick I thought.
One of my favorite videos on RUclips is footage from a Video Games Live concert in Brazil. Barry Leitch is introduced and the crowd reacts like he's a rock star.
3:55 I get this 1Up by stopping the koopa as it rebounds and then kicking it back and forth until it clears every koopa, since stopping the koopa doesn't reset the kick counter.
Correct! I didn't realize until watching it back after it was live 😔 the confusion comes from the 10 lives category I was talking about. In my head I thought that combo gets 2 1-ups, because in that route you only get 1 more 1-up than the previous route with the trick in 1-1. But that's because you skip the trick in 1-1... haha. 3 - 1 = 2
thats more of a glitch though. but still amazing cause its super hard! a glitch cause the turtle is walking below the ground with his head above it. so it would not count if NES "looked at it" or reviewed it
This is a phenomenal video. It rocks, you rock, this game rocks...good vintage games never die. :D I must go back and achieve these new found skills to add to my gaming portfolio.
I would do stuff like this in the Genesis Sonic games as a kid, try to get as many lives as I could in one playthrough of a game and glitch out the life counter
It kinda makes sense to me that there's a lot of unexplored territory; consider how long the speedrun has been being optimized for, and how that only covers a small subset of levels. Presumably there's plenty of other stuff waiting to be found in the levels that any% runners don't go through, purely because of how many runs and eyeballs being on that critical path pulls to part of the game. At the same time, wow.
yeah, pretty much just the speedrun has been so incredibly optimized. Other competitive things even, like high score, is nowhere near as explored. And when we worked on projects like minimum A press, brand new things were discovered/documented. Even after this video, happylee went and figured out a new thing with kicking shells!
well there is another way, run the game in 2 players mode, finish the game, start the new quest, go to 1-2 with mario and die on a first goomba, then go with luigi to 5-2, hit the block with the vine and when it grows up die to a hammer, then mario will be back in the beginning of 1-2 with the vine growing from the ground, so you can hang on it with beetle shell between you/vine and the left wall, infinite 1ups
this video was great! it also made me curious to see how this kind of technical video could mix with your other style of videos (where you record your life streams and edit them) since i feel your "fun" vibes in these streams could match pretty well with these deep technical explanations vibes
No one seems to believe me but 100% true I had a friend back in school that thought it was funny and never told me how but once you beat the game one the screen with the Princess you can hit a button combo and pick what ever lvl will have in quest 2 for example flying fish will replace all the enemies
I knew about the 8-1 koopa shell trick and when father saw us doing it he wanted to do it himself. But it was so funny watching him try again and again. We knew a few spots back then where it could be done but father would always shoot the koopa when pressing to run.
By the way, Marionaire discovered the interesting ways to get 1-Ups in 2008, but he got terminated, and it wasn't until AndrewG dug up archive triumvirate videos where he rediscovered those tricks.
is there any way I could get a link to all of these archived things from Marionaire? I definitely want to give credit where credit is due, and learn lots of new things myself from them!

I remember accidently bumping the old cart in an NES and getting not 1 not 5 not 10 but a groin worth of extra lives. Like the sprite that makes up the groin of the mushroom folks.
Moving platforms are treated as enemies internally. That's why they fail to load in 5-3 if the enemy slots are full. So honestly I'm not surprised that they don't reset the stomp counter.
they're simply sprites, not enemies. Horizontally moving platforms reset the stomp counter. The stomp chain counter gets reset in the "Land Player" function, and I'm not yet sure why that doesn't take place when landing on specifically vertical moving platforms (of various types).
@@Kosmicd12 I think you're mistaken. The horizontally moving platforms don't clear it either. (I overwrote the variable and it didn't get cleared when landing on said platforms) Landing on platforms is handled by the "Position Player On Platform" routine (different offset depending on platform size). They simply forgot to reset the stomp counter. Edit: The funny thing is, bullet bills (both variants) don't touch the stomp counter. Were you checking the behaviour in 1-3/5-3?
@@TakuikaNinja you know what, I was actually checking horizontal platforms in SMB2-J, since there were much easier spots to test. It's possible they fixed horizontal platforms in 2j? But they didn't fix vertical ones so I don't know why that would be the case lol. I'll have to test later when I have time.
Hi, I have a memory of me finishing a castle without collecting the axe. I think I jumped over it, completed the level and bowser bridge did not fall away. Any ideas if I was dreaming or if this was real?
If you land on one enemy followed by a second, you get 100-200. But for landing on both at the same time, you get 100-400. How does that work, and if you could theoretically cram many enemies into one block, would it continue skipping steps?
