- Germany’s biggest state Bavaria is bracing for its local elections. The traditionally conservative region is considered the wealthiest state of all in Germany. Still, the far right Alternative für Deutschland, as in the rest of Germany, is projected to reach a new record share of the vote in the upcoming elections. We went there to the Bavarian city of Straubing to find out why.
DW's political correspondent Benajmin Alvarez-Gruber tells us more on the significance of the AfD's rise in Germany. And we talk to our political correspondent Thomas Sparrow, who reports for us on the AfD's convention in Magdeburg.

Every time the AfD was mentioned in this video, it was preceded by "far-right", yet it failed to mention what policies make it far-right. I dont think opposing immigration can be considered far-right, seeing as here in South Africa, its mainly the far-left communists who oppose Zimbabwean immigration. So immigration isnt a left/right issue. What else makes AfD far-right?

I appreciate that Germans are concerned about the right wing for historical reasons, but pieces like this seem extremely politically intolerant. How can a news organization so unselfconsciously label a party "far" right because it is against immigration? It is quite absurd. If the party is in fact extremist, then evidence should be provided to motivate the label.
The party IS extremist hence anti-democratic. Lots of parties are against illegal migration but it shouldn't be based on hate and racism as it's the case of AFD. The party is fuelled by disinformation too.
The germans themselves are voting them, they aren't winning through cheating.
The German domestic intelligence service observes the party and members as suspected right-wing extremists. In addition, one of the party's associations has already been classified as proven right-wing extremist. Many in the party use national socialist phrases. Do your research first before saying: "But where is the evidence?"

If any politician in any other party wants to take the voters back from AfD, all they need to do is take a harder stance on immigration. People who are afraid of how Germany is changing are more and more forced to go to the right to find a party willing to take a tougher stance. I don't know why every party from the CSU and left ignore this issue. What needs to happen here? AfD with a majority? That would just be horrible.

After the latest mega-rush in arm purchases, Poland will be *better* armed than DE - not to speak of army morale, considering how Bundeswehr was marginalized during the last two decades.

The party has on multiple occasions expressed itself as racist and anti immigration on grounds of racism. If you come here and talk to the people that vote for this party, you'll feel the heat. They aren't gonna treat you well because of your skin colour alone. Furthermore, they don't have any realistic policies to change the country. They are literally just spewing hatred among races, religions and cultures.
That ‘system’ is pluralism, where people have the freedom to choose their lives, but are required to respect and tolerate others and their choices. What holds the community together is not belonging to a traditional culture or ethnic identity, but their ‘civic’ status, as equal citizens in rights and in dignity. So no, you don’t have to respect anything, except other people. Which is why AfD is absolutely wrong, and dangerous - they are doing the opposite.

Interesting fact: Germany lacks in nursing staff. So foreigners are invited to work in Germany, e.g. from the Philippines. However, there this professsion is academic, contrary to Germany. As a consequence, sometimes there is dispute at the workplace because the forreigner has more knowlegde than his superior. Sooner or later, the frustration is growing and the foreigner leaves Germany.

I do think immigration is an issue. For integration to work, there must be some degree of conformity. And the s(us)t(ain)ability of our social security, healthcare, education etc. is at the very least weakened by people who require more resources. Finding humane answers is not always easy, but condemning e.g. religious extremism and imported sexism should be an easy step to take.

There's really little doubt that humanity is quite lost. There is some strange notion that we are in control and drive these changes but we are very much at the whim and stochastic indeterminacy of a system of communication, culture and technology that maximally self-propagates as a function of the turbulent dissonance it invokes and sustains. All ideologies, plausibly - all systems of belief - are in the ultimate analysis all basically fictions, stories which we have told for so long that we think that there is something essential and "true" about them when there really is no such thing. The herding instincts overrule the capacity fo0r rational thought and populist icons (and idioms) hold the center because they generate just the right kinds of communications systems turbulence so as to revivify and self-validate their own shaky foundational assumptions and axioms.
It's always interesting how those with the slowest brain and least knowledge are the ones who are the most susceptible to fairly tale stories while on the other hand they are the loudest when it comes to demanding that others should stay out because of the lack of fast gray mater between the ears.
Makes me wonder when they'll stop being hypocritical and throw themselves out of Germany first and EU second to make their vision of "smart and strong fortress not-just-EU-but-also-Germany" a reality.
The total commitment and dedication of the AfD will be the political and economic salvation of Germany , and most of Europe.
A part of the traditional, conservative CSU voters was always far right since that party was founded. No wonder those are now voting for AfD. They speak their language. They are deeply rooted in the ultra-conservatives. F.Schönhuber and F.Handlos for the "Republikaner", former CSU members. The coalition partner "Freie Wähler" with the leader H.Aiwanger also uses right-winged populist language! "Wehret den Anfängen". That's what i would recommend. Don't fall for those!
