What made the difference for me when getting to 1000 was doing puzzles 30 min to 1 hr each day and playing 15 10 instead of 10 minutes. Alot of people play very quickly in 10 minute games and it can be hard to win with low time. Great content so far!
Sorry about this comment on an older video, I just noticed 8:43 it's a blunder (There's another comment about this, but they don't explain much). White can push the "a" pawn and you lose a knight no matter what, as they either take with the pawn or with the bishop. As a general principle, avoid having two pieces protecting each other if there is no other piece protecting them, as it can lead to nasty situations like this one.
On move 6 when you have to retreat your bishop, I much prefer Bb6 and then a6 to make a hidey hole for it on a7 if necessary. Your bishop has a beautiful diagonal (g1-a7) and it doesn’t do too much on e7. My phone jumped between the two moves but ultimately prefers Bb6. Also, in the endgame, if you could open up your light square bishop, you had mate in 1. Not sure you actually had the chance, but it’s a good thing to be aware of when you’re looking at moves. Those “sniper bishops” can be deadly, especially at lower ratings.
interesting.. the default logic I usually resort to is keeping the minor pieces centralized which is why Be7 was played but maybe that doesn't always need to be the case
@@IvanLChess It's a good principle especially for knights, and the computer thinks that Be7 is much the same (0.1 worse). But we are not computers, and in chess, the answer is always "it depends on the position"*. Be7 leads to a position where black's bishop is pinned in and his knight ends up back on b8. White is having all the fun here. Bb6 leaves the bishop where it hits the centre and is pointed directly at white's king after he castles and the knight can stay on c6. I would much rather play that. * fun story. Famously, a journalist asked Boris Spassky whether he preferred chess to sex, and he replied "It depends on the position"
And because he’s already played Bc5 the best move after 4. d3 is Nf6, then if the knight jumps to g5 you can just castle and you are completely safe and have a lead in development
1250 here, Not that much higher than 1000. But just my two cents: but at my level and below what makes a world of difference is simply blunder checking, and trying to think positionally. Blunder checking is inherently tied to calculation. And a mistake is often just a mistake in calculation(you can’t prevent what you don’t see). If you aren’t thinking what’s the worst thing that my opponent can do, you’re going to get caught off guard. Often times your strategy is informed by what your opponent can and can’t do. This is inherently tied to thinking positionally in chess because A) it’s your defense, your always trying to prevent your opponent’s strength in terms of their positions in relation to 2) your positioning, which ultimately is what creates your offense. GM Amand chess habits was a game changer, it’s amazing how far you can get staying disciplined about simply developing properly and not making simple common positional errors.
You skipped this in the game review, but your first blunder was 12…Nfd5, because white can win a knight with a3. Lucky for you your opponent missed the idea.

fair enough. I always figured two knights protecting each other was okay but maybe not as you pointed out.

It couldn't be a fried liver because you played Bc5 on move 3. The fried liver could have arisen if you had played Nf6 instead of Bc5.

Getting to 1000 is the hard part. I was at 1000 like a month ago and now I'm 1250
Strangely 1300s seem weaker than 1200s. Just get pust 1300 you will reach 1400 in no time
