Thanks so much for watching this free harmonica lesson on how to play the blues scale on harmonica for beginners.
The first beginner blues scale is The Simple Walking Blues scale and here are the tabs in C:
3 -3 -4 -5 6
-5 -4 -3 3
The second beginner blues scale is The "Almost" Blues Scale and here are the tabs in C:
-2 -3 4 -4 -5 6
-5 -4 4 -3 -2
Once that's comfy, then we can add the final few notes:
-2 -1 1 -1 -2
So tabs for the complete "Almost" Blues Scale on harmonica is:
-2 -3 4 -4 -5 6
-5 -4 4 -3 -2 -1 1 -1
And that's what we play 3 times over the 12-bar blues backing track in G. If you have any further questions drop a comment below. Congrats on learning the beginner harmonica blues scale!
Rock on,

I’ve played guitar for 45 years and have dabbled with harmonica. Copying songs best I could. Your lessons are concise and straightforward. I am retired now and plan on taking my harp playing to new levels. Thanks !
Great to hear!
I am 85 years young and deciding to give learning Harmonica again. Your teaching video is a great way to learn to play. You take to take to take it one step at a time. Thanks for the assistance, you are a wonderful teacher.
Good for you, Benny. That's awesome man! Thanks for the note. Rock on!
Agreed!
For us old timers, it’s a great workout for your lungs too.

Hey Luke, I'm 57 years old and having a great time having you teach me to play... the right way...
RIGHT ON!! 🙌🏼
I love your teaching style! However, I have a question: I have a 12 note chromatic harmonica. Most of what you played matched up with my harmonica, except the -2 draw. The 2 blow matched the sound of your -2 draw. Will it make a difference if I play it as a 2 blow (I mean it sounds like yours, but played a little differently) or should I get myself a 10 hole diatonic harmonica?
After buying a harmonica over 19 years ago, I am finally just starting to learn how to play it, through your instructions on RUclips! I love it! Thank you.
Wonderful! I'm so glad you're playing Tamara, and I hope you never stop!!! 🙌🏼

Hey mate, I’m guitar player looking to diversify the solo sounds. This lesson is the best one I could find suiting what I have in mind! I’m able to bend a note but not very good at play the note already straight bent yet, if that makes sense. However, this little scale opened the world to me. Thank you very much for that. And you are a great teacher!

Special 20
Luke you're awesome .. I need your autograph buddy .
Ha! Right on Ananda. Thanks bud.
Aloha,

I surfed around Japan’s harmonica RUclips but can’t find this kind of lessen .Most harmonica players just show us their excellent play . Though their play heal me , I am eager to improve my harmonica ability. So I wanted this kind of lessen video which no one would complain if you were asked to pay 😌
RUclips
Awww, right on Tomoo! I'm glad it was helpful for you.
Hey Luke,i have so much fun follow your lessons.
But your intro on the easy going blues scale is awesome,i try tot play
along but i can't figure out the tabs.
I hope you will tell me the tabs. A big thanks .
That's a trill between -4 and -5 which I kinda bend down and up while trilling then:
-4' -4' -4' -4' -4 -4' -4 '-4 -4' -3' -2
-3' -2 -2" -1 -2" -2
Luke, thanks so much for the great lesson! One question and one suggestion for you: I like to play acoustic blues guitar using Em pentatonic or Am pentatonic a lot. Do I need a different harmonica to accompany that, or can I do it with a C harmonica but just playing different notes on the scale? Also a suggestion that in addition to the hole number for the draws and blows you add the note that it gives you as well. That would really help with understanding the scales as they relate to other instruments and keys. Thanks again!
Hey William - Yeah you'll want an A harmonica for E blues, and a D harmonica for A blues.
I explain how to figure out keys for playing blues in this vid: ruclips.net/video/V2aokP8GriI/видео.html
Rock on!
Great lesson Luke! My first scale on harmonica. Much fun!!! Merry Christmas!! Take care and stay safe!
Thanks! You too, Dean! Merry Christmas!
Rock on,
Luke
I just bought harmonicas for my whole family after watching your introduction video. I'm ecstatic to continue learning more! I like playing blues and jazz guitar and violin so this will be fun!
Can you recommend a good blues backing track mix? Should they all be in C?
You want blues backing tracks in the key of G actually for playing along with on a C harmonica.
Here's one:

@@Harmonicacom thank you for clarifying. I tried a C backing track and had to change it up a lot. Is that because blowing 123 is a G chord on the harmonica?
I started trying to learn much too late. My continues smoking for many years really hurts me. But the good thing is that maybe this is enough to make me finally quit after 59 years of polluting my lungs and also, I'm not giving up learning this harp that Marlboro has sent me from all the cigarette coupons I have saved.
Right on Charlie. I have plenty of students decades older than you who have started and are progressing well. Harmonica is good for your lungs bro! God bless you on your journey. Don't give up. You got this. 👊🏼🎶💥💯
Hey Luke thanks for 5he video when you are playing these scales are you in second position
Hey Mike - you're very welcome! Yep! 2nd position on the C harmonica, so playing the key of G. You got it. Rock on!!
I understand how can play blues while watch your video. You are my harmonica teacher. You are very nice🙏
Happy to hear that! Honored to be part of your journey. 👊🏼
Elton John said he wants his glasses back😂
Thanks for the lesson brother.
LOL. Right on Darren! You're very welcome.
Hi! Thank you for this lesson!!!! Where I find backing track? Tnx❤
Isn't it here? www.harmonica.com/easy-blues-scale-video-lesson/
LMK if you can't find it. 👊🏼
@@Harmonicacom thank you 🙏
Luke can you post the bpm in your vids or notes so we can set a metro to practice your most excellent lessons?
Post a time link and I can tell you. Most metronomes have a tap feature, so you can just tap along with the song to get the BPM.
Also jam track here: !soundcloud.com/user-58351614/chicago-blues-backing-track-in-g-slow?in=user-58351614/sets/6-easy-blues-riffs-anyone-can-play&si=b8271a12685541ee839d4176dfa816f1&
Just bought a harmonica. It’s a Conjurer 10hole in C. Any reviews on it?
Sorry, Juan. Never heard of it.
😊👍♫🧡
👍👏
Right on Dolf! Thanks man. 👊🏼
Hey Luke, I just bought a Lee Oskar harmonica, and it won't draw on number 2 hole, and number 1 is also very weak, i've tried gentle draw on 2 to no avail. I have no trouble with the East top diatonic 10 hole that I have, should I send the Lee Oskar back to Amazon?
Yes, send her back. All of the great harmonica manufacturers still send out a lemon every once in awhile. They'll make it right. 👌🏼
👍✌️
🤙🏼
Hi, does this scale works for any harmonica in others keys, or is only for C?
Hey Giuseppe - C to sound good playing along with me. But tabs are the same for any harmonica! No need learn something new for new key. All the same. 😎
👍🤙
Thanks Frank!
Thanks again for all 👌😁
I've some questions...
Will those scales apply to others harmonica tunes?
& how do I know which harmonica tune suits to the songs I need to play on?
For exemple, for "Dirty old town" I thought I need a C, but seems I'm wrong..
Also, I want to play on some creations of mine which are E on guitar... 🤔😜
I would be great if you could help me 😁
Is there any rules for those harmonica choices 😎✌️
Forgive my "English" I'm a poor frenchie 😜
You need a D for Dirty Old Town ruclips.net/video/V2aokP8GriI/видео.html
Hope that helps!
@@Harmonicacom, I don't understand why... Because, on a guitar that song is a C... So why a D harmonica? 🤔
@@Harmonicacom, OK after few research, seems it's an artist choice for that song, intro with a D, and also use a C and G 😜
I didn't made things easy 😅😂
Anyway, thanks for your answer & all that you do 😎🍀✌️
👍
Thanks for watching! 😎🙌🏼🎶
Hi luke is there a certain key that sounds sort of the same as electric guitar like juzzie smith style?
Adam, I think any key works, but what makes it sounds electric is playing through a bullet style mic. Juzzie uses a Bulletini from Blows Me Away Productions. They're like $200. The Hohner Harp Blaster HB-52 is a bit cheaper and sounds similar.
@@Harmonicacom thanks for the info i appreciate it 😀
Struggling to make a solid sound on draws lower than 3, any tips?
Hey Joe - yep! Drop your jaw, let it hang low and relaxed, lower the back of the tongue like when you yawn, and don't draw TOO hard. Just a nice easy draw. What brand /age harp are you using?
اجمل قناة هارمونيكة فالعالم ارجوك لاتتتكلم اعطينا معزوفة راءعة فقط ❤🇲🇦🙋♂️💃
Lol. I never stop talking!
How do you not fill up on air or how do you expell it with out interfearing with the notes
Pay attention to the nose. Make sure you're not letting air come in thru it on draw or escape it on blows (except for when you HAVE to in order to equalize lungs.) I go over this a lot in my Beginner to Boss course. www.harmonica.com/lessons/
That 2 draw gonna be my gatekeeper, I can do it if i focus, but not fast
Relaxation. 🔑 You got this! 👊🏼

OK.
What is the benefit of the online lessons for USD 187, over the free lessons on RUclips?
The paid course is tailored to take you step by step in bite size bits building skills in a progressive way. It's a night and day difference if you're serious about wanting to learn to play and feeling frustrated. 180 Day money-back guarantee. But if you're feeling inspired and growing with free content, then rock on! 😎
how are you related to JP Allen?
how is JP and HAL?
He passed the torch to me when he decided to retire from making harmonica vids.
If the 2 draw is so hard to play, and the 3 blow is the same note, why not just play the 3 blow instead? In some licks it just seems more natural, but I don't want to get into any bad habits that I might regret later on.
Hey Lee - you can always play either. I recommend always trying both ways. Later there are advantages to -2 like you can bend into it. But I wouldn't overly worry about "developing a bad habit" playing the 3 blow. Once bending comes together, you'll naturally start wanting to play the -2 more often.
What do you mean that IS the best harmonica solo.
Hmmmmmm.... not sure what you're referring to here David?
Thanks a lot, now my wife says she'll blow less.
Ooof. Sorry about that Anthony. ;-)
I’m definitely not breathing properly. Lol help?
Breathe in, belly out
Breathe out, belly in
That's the key!
Also, "Outgassing" is pushing air out your nose when you're blowing on the harmonica so that you can get more air out of your lungs more quickly.
Make sure you're not allowing air to come in through your nose when you're breathing in. You can confirm this by pinching your nose. I check myself like this and find all the time that I am allowing air to come in through my nose when I'm drawing on the harmonica.g
Lol I caint do it fast
That's ok Chuck! Slow and clean, over and over and over.... 🤣 The speed will come with time. Slow and steady wins the race. the more you go slow the faster you grow
