I don't think Ai isn't gonna come in V2. Because It's a feature that will force people to buy V3

in recent status update hey mentioned that they now have less incentive to hold back features because they have Canva's "resources" (subscription money). Time will show how they'll deliver on this promise

    Suite:
-Plugin/Scripting architecture/api; the thought of being able to use Astute's tools inside of AD sets one's head to spinning, and that's just baseline.
-A DAM or DAM lite, as Bridge isn't really a DAM.
    AD:
    -Shapes to Guides
-Blend Tool (what you're calling Auto Blend, We think)
-Pattern Tool and Pattern Brush (think less what they call a pattern brush and more like what Illustrator's is capable of).
-Seconded on _real_ vector brushes, which interfaces with the above desired pattern brush.
    AP:
-More parity with Adobe's Layer Styles, the math isn't mathing there at all.
-The ability to edit each color channel separately, how this is still missing boggles the mind
-Some of more interesting Blur options from PS like Directional (no, Motion is not the same thing) and Shape Blur.
-Speaking of Blur, some more detailed explanations of the more arcane features like Custom Blur which throw an alien dialog box at Us and expect Us to know what in the hells it is.
    Do Not Care:
-Autotrace. Not a priority and was never as good a tool as simply tracing a sketch with vector lines. Vocal minority making this seem more in demand than it is.
-Animation/AE "killer". Not happening, stop asking.

Why would people want Astute's tools? Most folks move away from Adobe due to the subscription model, how many would then be willing to pay for a subscription model of Astute's tools (even though it's way cheaper then the full Adobe suite)? If you're interested in Astute's tools, chances are that you're willing to pay Adobe prices and model. I do think that plugins are a missing (key) feature, but taking Astute's tools as an example, that's probably not the best illustration on why we need plugins.
The interesting thing with working with the Affinity suite is that you realize more and more what you're missing (from the Adobe suite) and the question becomes not IF you'll go back to Adobe, but when. Things like Background removal can be worked around (thanks to Kru Mark's videos!), but require additional steps, and more time. And time=money, not only for professionals, but also for hobbyists! An Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom subscription is only €145/year, an Affinity suite upgrade costs €135 (and it currently looks like we'll have 3 years between mayor releases). The Affinity suite is great for a one time purchase and you mostly do relatively basic stuff within a certain range of tooling, especially if you have a list of tools available that fills in a decent amount of 'missing' or lacking features in Affinity. But when you start doing a lot of stuff in a certain workflow, Affinity starts showing it's issues and going back and forth between different tools outside of Affinity is going to take more and more time and at a certain point your time is worth more then an Adobe subscription...
Note: I ended my business subscription to Adobe cloud last year, I was just not using it that often anymore. But I've been doing more graphics projects the last half year where I was hitting walls in Affinity, which require some time to find workarounds for, learning new tools, etc. At this point I suspect that the 'cheap' Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom subscription might have been cheaper compared to the time I spent just googling and watching RUclipss...

@@Cergorach You do make a good point. But I think Astute is actually a great example. I think an argument could be made that using subscription-based third-party tools with Affinity Suite makes even more sense. I think Serif should go all the way to remove any limitations that current users may be experiencing and break down the barriers that are preventing further adoption of their apps. Photoshop's plugin support is the one thing that has made it hard for me to leave Adobe altogether. I use Sapphire from Boris FX for both images and video. Sapphire is a very powerful subscription-based third-party product. Running it in the Affinity Suite means I would only have to pay for one high-priced monthly subscription instead of two high-priced subscriptions as I currently do running it in Adobe CC.

As a game developer, I'd love to see some kind of usable alpha channel workflow in Photo. Being able to casually add an extra channel and draw alpha (for packing into a TGA file) is why I can't drop my trusty Photoshop CS4.

Auto trace doesn’t work well in any app. Illustrator’s trace is horrible. I always end up having to just draw things myself. Same thing with cutting objects out of backgrounds. People think Photoshop’s AI background removal is great. It isn’t. I ALWAYS end up have to do either major cleanup. And I mean MAJOR. Or, more likely, just using the pen tool to clip and object out of the background. Then, if the object is a person with hair, I will take the brush tool with a very small size and use quick mask to trace over all the hair. It is time consuming, but the end result is perfect. I always see people doing videos on RUclips using the background removal tool on an image that has a person on a very clean background. That NEVER happens in real life. Backgrounds always have a bunch of leaves or crazy textures. Doing things manually is the only way to do them if you are any kind of respectable graphic designer.

I actually use ai select tools quite often. Of course it’s not perfect and needs tweaking , but it’s welcome feature. Regarding tracing, a lot of times I upscale image with model called RealESRGAN_x4Plus Anime 6B, then tracing. It makes much better results . You can do it in automatic1111

Most likely Serif has more priority tasks in the list than creating Auto-Trace. I was a software developer in the past. Tasks are added to the todo-list, firstly - in their priority within the product, and secondly - in the degree of development complexity. In addition, Auto-Trace already requires the work of Ai, and in this regard they have a higher priority in the development of AI masks, because this is the trend and it is here that they lag behind. Auto-Trace is rather a pleasant option. Imho. 🙂

    • @HiddenAsbestos
      @HiddenAsbestos Месяц назад

I agree that a project needs to be well organised, but if a large percentage of customers are asking for a feature, shouldn't that influence the priority of a task?
Also I don't think auto-trace needs "AI", maybe that would give better results but it's not a pre-requisite. Inkscape has had it for years, well before machine learning got involved.

I think Affinity Photo doesnt need heavy-weight AI replacement functions but some basic AI selection (locally w/o servers) would be adequate

The most critical features still missing in Designer are real vector brush engine, live transform filters/effects, vector pattern fills, blend tool. Image trace is overhyped and is also trash in Illustrator.

1 button BG Removal to be missing is unforgivable along with AI features such as generative fill, maybe now that Canva has bought Affinity these updates might appear in V2.6 but I've learnt to not hold my breath.

Thanks for this excellent review. I would LOVE to see right-to-left support but it’s a difficult feature to implement! On the other hand, it would open up a uge potential market (Arabic script & Hebrew scripts between them are used quite widely)

I opened a full (more than 100 Layers) AI file in Affinity 2.5.2! Lets see if I can finish this project in Affinity! It did affect the fonts,(easy to fix) but the gradients look amazing, keeping the effects I used in Adobe. The jpegs are good too

There is a growing backlash against how AI data is being scraped - especially Adobe's latest terms and conditions. So serif could almost make a feature of not having it.
Still there are things people will want such as upscaling, autotrace and so forth that shouldn't requireaggressive scraping or dodgy ethics to implement.

When it comes to AI, Affinity Photo is falling further and further behind. Even a second-tier program like
Corel Paint Shop Pro now has AI upscaling, AI replacement, and AI background removal.

Things may still be missing but come on, we are still in version 2.. It has come a long way since it first came out and it's getting better.. Adobe didn't have everything all at once either and they charged a fortune.. I am not sure I really care about AI coming into it. I'd rather have that as an option..

Trace tool is probably difficult to program, I'm sure they are trying their best to get it done and done right. Let's be a little patient, they are moving along faster than expected, this young company is going against Adobe products that took years to perfect their products, even so, there are a lot of bugs and slow functions that they can't get right. So give Affinity a break, they are trying.
