    Based on the fact there was SO MUCH negative comments on the official announcement from Affinity. I hope they are smart and won't remove the one-time payment option. Otherwise I'm sure they will lose more than 60%-75% of their users who wanted to escape from Adobe's greed.
    But seeing Affinity removing their official announcement (with all those comments) and making a new one with comments being turned off, I have my doubts.

    Here's why they will likely never take away a perpetual license or at least not for a very long time. Photoshop and Lightroom is only $9.99 a month. Photoshop has far more features especially with lightroom. If people are having to pay monthly they'll just move back to photoshop. I just don't see how Affinity is anywhere near the level they need to be at to compete with Adobe. The perpetual license is their main selling point. Take that away and most would choose Photoshop.

    It is unfortunate that one of the last hold outs will likely become a subscription based model. I think the trade off would have to be a significant increase in value added, in order to maintain customer interest. If they just change the pricing, but don't provide anything, people will likely find other solutions. There are ways to do a subscription model correctly, but most companies don't pull that off.... only time will tell.

    Whenever a company buys another company.....they only do that with the expectation that they can make more from this purchase than the cost of the purchase.
    They have a plan to do that.
    Perhaps....they want this new suite of products and they intend to market it to their existing very large user base.....or perhaps they want to make more money from the existing suite user base via subscriptions in the future.
    We'll never know until they make a change....anything prior to that is nothing more than speculation.

    IMHO, YES, Affinity is finished as the product(s) we came to love. As a retired 45-year software developer, I have been here too many times. The suits/exec/investors will head off to the Caribean (and some senior softdevs will get rich), but the majority of the IP brain trust will leave, and what will be left is a mere shell of the former product(s) (i.e., I retired from HP after they bought multiple companies that went to sh*t after HP bought them). In the short term, the real risk is to see the price of the next major release (V3) and future updates raise drastically to make the subscription looks artificially more attractive...
    But there are still strong alternatives: Corel have been in the business for as long as Adobe (back in the '90) and never gave up their perpetual license for Paint shop Pro. And of course, the more safe alternative is The Gimp, with it's perpetual free license, including major updates 😊

    The fact that Canva wants to "acquire" companies signals Canva is about "control".
    These "consolidations" almost never work for the interests of consumers, but rather the greed of the "controllers", people who think they need to control everything, especially creatives and thinkers.
    The "merchant class" seems to be on its way to destroying yet another brand built by years of collaboration between users and companies that want to build the best product for the most people by a company that wants to make the most profit for a few people. Only time will tell. But history does not give us much hope.

    I see one scenario as continuation of a one off purchase base with maybe version upgrades at a fraction of new licence cost. I use topaz and it is awesome but each year the price is full cost for a year's worth of upgrade. Having left Adobe as soon as they went subscription, I embrace ai as another creative tool and would see this as a potential reason to justify incremental updates with a fractional pricing. Ultimately as a creative I think we need to see competition and not monopoly within the tool market place.

If a small subscription for bonus features allows them to continue development and keep the lights on so we can use the perpetual license of the whole core suite then I’m alright with that. Given that any application not free and open-source _by design_ (i.e., Blender) is all-but guaranteed to follow in Adobe's footsteps (cf., late-stage capitalism) and resetting my power-user workflow every few years to keep pace with that churn would be a sure-fire false-economy, I long ago adopted the mantra: "Better the devil you know."

    For a while I am looking for a replacement of Photoshop. I earlier had Affinity Photo on my Windows computer besides Lightroom CC+Photoshop. The most I love on Adobe is Lightroom Classic (I don't use the cloud version). The only thing I liked best of Photoshop was the AI-function of easily removing a certain object, but now Lightroom has also this function. No need of using PS anymore. If you are a designer or artist PS is then a different story. So I would like to cancel Photoshop out of my description and like to buy Affinity Photo again or I go for Pixelmator Pro. But in replacement of cancelling Photoshop I will get more cloud-space and that is something I don't need! This is of course meant to pay the same amount as in the combination Lightroom+Photoshop. Why not a customer giving the opportunity to choose for example only Lightroom Classic? It is very clearly that Adobe is not thinking of the benefits of his customers. In general I think that 'buying' apps on description basis is a very bad thing. Of course I can stop with also Lightroom, but at this moment there is no alternative app for me, which is winning from Lightroom.

I didn’t see it cuz I was focused on blender at the time and I kinda forgot about it till I saw your video on how you are looking for a good motion graphics program. Also Moho has been a stand alone price for years. But has two versions. Debut and pro. One time purchase.

    Now, as I am around people massively switching to open source software and OS, the people in charge need to understand, that if you take away good software from the people that need it, they will put their time and effort to learn something else. GIMP isnt the best software in the world, but I am just trying to imagine, what an angry "mob" of broken hearted software engineers can do and how these companies dont understand it. I am not thinking of buying affinity, but I will just wait up to see what will happen.

    Sketch was the grandaddy of interface design apps, until they joined the dark side and went subscription. They offer sort-of an optional permanent license now but the damage is done. They will never recover that market from Figma.
    I predict Affinity will go subscription and offer something similar to Sketch, but there will be a new contender by then and Affinity will lose a big chunk of their customers.

  • @jeffereyjimenez6439

    I think if Canva moves Affinity to a subscription model, it will have to be competitively priced with Adobe. Affinity does not have a Lightroom type of image editor. If you have ever used today's Lighroom, it has lots of editing power beyond even Affinity. I never liked that about Affinity. I will wait and see, but in the end, the gold standard is Adobe. I will probably end up back there. Time will tell.

      @christian-schubert Lightroom has AI and way better selection tools. In fact, most photographers like to stay in Lightroom for their editing, avoiding Photoshop if possible. Of course, high-level commercial photographers and editors use Capture One. I say use whatever works for your budget and workflow.

      I agree. The RAW editing with affinity photo just isn't at the level as Lightroom or Capture One. That's actually why I ended up buying Capture One. I love Affinity for retouching, but I do mostly everything else in C1

    • @bhovis
      @bhovis 7 месяцев назад +2

      @@MichaelSturgillone thing that discourages me about Affinity is their lack of interest in having a pro-level RAW developer. The Develop Persona seems like it’s there to do a minimal job in terms of features and image quality, and it is far from acceptable. I can spend a lot of time working on a RAW photo in Affinity and still not have a result that even approaches the quality of Capture One right out of the gate before any editing.

    I don't see this as a bad thing at all. I'm excited that Canva is going to bring their funding and their technology to Affinity. This is the step Affinity needs to compete in the new AI world. Canva does AI better than Adobe in some areas and better than Affinity in all areas. Affinity is going to become better now.

If I had a reliable professional suite of design tools for Linux I would quit. My DAW is here, I can use DAVINCI Resolve, Blender is here... I just need replacements for Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign that aren't ugly open-sauce programs as a UI designer, I don't like software that looks cringe. If I can get Unreal 4/5 and Twinmotion here and Revit... i'm def not gonna need another OS

    • @sebastianmichael5208
      @sebastianmichael5208 5 месяцев назад

      @@SKMRify Yes and no. You may have the highest skills, but if a tool lacks certain capabilities, those skills are useless. You can have the highest skills, but if the tool limits your work in terms of time, you can't work professionally. Take Affinity Photo as an example. Try to correct the white balance at once using a grey card for an entire session of 300 photos. Here, skills won't help. Affinity Photo not only doesn't work with grey cards (or colour charts in general) but also lacks batch processing. Affinity Photo is a programme for amateurs, not professionals, and a user's skills cannot compensate for what's impossible to do in AP. The printing engine in Affinity is an engine for just a few home printers, it doesn't meet industry standards. For over 20 years, Serif has been unable to fix the rendering/printing engine so that it correctly calculates vectors to pixels at a given DPI. Change the document size while maintaining proportions, and you'll notice throughout Affinity how you'll get, for example, a size of 128.6px. What is 0.6px? Now try to print a pattern on a 7-metre wide fabric on a 200-metre roll, with a pattern repeating edge-to-edge, when the programme has calculated 0.6px for you. Good luck. Every fourth industrial machine will draw a line in a transparent colour (usually black or white). And now, how are skills supposed to help? That you'll be sitting with a calculator and pencil in hand, recalculating on thousands of analogue paper sheets the positions of each of the thousands of vectors you used in your graphic design from DPI to coordinates in WHOLE pixels, because after all, 0.6px doesn't exist. Professionally means quickly, confidently, without problems, with investor trust and without wasting their money and time (a badly printed bolt of fabric is a small cost, but 200 such bolts is already time and big money). Affinity is for amateurs, not for professionals. I've known Serif since... since I used Page Plus on Windows 3.11. I'm almost a pathological fanboy of this company. I have purchased licences for all their products, even multiple licences for many. Affinity is currently my primary suite. Perhaps that's why I know who the target audience of Serif is (or was, because Serif no longer exists). I've talked with engineers for hours, discussing functionalities, bugs, ideas for future versions. In several manuals for their programmes, you'll find my name (somewhere at the very end, but still). Serif never had the financial backing or even the desire to target the professional sector. They always aimed at education, offices, amateurs, advanced amateurs, undemanding low-professional applications. Serif was a group of enthusiastic software engineers. Serif never had sufficient funds for licences to catch up with the world of professional applications. That's why they invented everything anew, they had their own unique ideas not found anywhere else. Nothing that came out of Serif was ever a PROFESSIONAL tool.
