- Following the recent scandal with Dior, I made a video talking about the allegations against the sub contracted companies to Dior, and the judicial action taken against them in Italy given the alleged breaches of workers rights, working conditions and safety requirements. In the comment box on that video, I was asked quite a few times if I would still shop in Dior, if I would keep my Dior bags or buy anymore Dior bags. In this video, I share with you if I will still shop in Dior.

Destroying or selling existing bags does not hurt Dior or the contractors. Personally I’d keep those beautiful bags but forgo future purchases.
But if someone is so outraged by this Dior scandal, then how could they support and promote Dior by wearing one of their bags? People don't wear Balenciaga after their scandal. Yet all of these RUclipsrs that made a video saying how awful Dior was to have hired this company to make their bags, have not gotten rid of their Dior bags. Now, that is hypocritical! Some of them have ridiculous excuses for keeping their Dior bags like it would be disrespectful to the workers who made the bag to throw it out. What? No, it's disrespectful to wear the bag and advertise it for Dior.

I was about to buy the limited saddle, but honestly after hearing about all of these I just couldn’t. I have a company, I employ several dozen people, I'm not Dior, I don't have such margins, and yet I care about my employees working conditions and I do my best to make them as good as possible. It’s just not right what Dior is doing. I just bought two pre-loved Chanel, and I think second hand route is way better for me at this time. Dior should do something about, It’s a shame they’re acting like nothing has happened. Dear Dior - something has happened!!

Good for u…as someone who also employs a some employees i really do care on their well being…but i guess not all people have that kind of mentality…someone cough cough (merideth) just brought a dior bag amidst this scandal and when ask about the issue she said that dior will pull through with this scandal …i dont care if she can afford the most expensive bag but she didnt adresss the mal treatment and expliotation that this employees experience and to think she is a busineswoman herself…shameful
@@Vasalyn Yes, I'm aware of that, but I think it's getting worse and worse nowadays + If I chose second hand I don't put my money directly to the company, the bag has already been bought. Hope it makes sense.

With compliance visits, it is entirely possible that Dior did do visits and checks. However as someone who works in this realm, I’m very aware that companies can ‘put on a show’ while these visits take place and the revert to questionable practices once the delegation leave. The Italian government needs to take more responsibility.

Why are we still buying luxury when they are being made the same way the counterfeit bags are being made?
Another thing I feel like everyone is missing is that it is a subcontract company not Dior itself under investigation.
That’s an infinite question though that is ultimately irrelevant. Why pay to see a movie when you can pirate it. Why pay for a song when you can pirate it. Why work for money when you can make counterfeit money or steal someone’s identity.

If I were applying for a credit card from a company that was actually just stealing someone else's credit card and marketing it as my own special credit card, that's different than stealing the credit card myself because the company spent thousands of dollars in marketing to make sure I didn't know they stole it. Obviously it's wrong how the card was "made" for a consumer, but the consumer was tricked into believing it was legitimate the whole time. I hope that made sense lol.
Dior Italy is subject to judicial administration for a year for its negligence (so there is a case to answer by them as they have a responsibility to prevent abuse in their supply chain) and they are also under investigation for the ethical and social responsibility statements made.

I think Dior probably isn’t the only designer company that subcontracts work to countries like China. Having said that, many people buy from Shein and Temu so nobody’s in a position to cast the first stone. I guess we should all be aware of what it takes to produce any goods we buy.
The very existence of this sweatshop was to have abusive work but still "Made in italy". The Idea behind the 'Made in' was that we, europeans, are in control of the labor laws of the products we buy. And when the enforcement of those laws fails, like here, we are in control of the punishment. When we buy on shein and others we forfeit any control on the labor and support KNOWINGLY slavery

People might as well be prepared to stop buying luxury because they will eventually find out that all the brands are doing something under the cover. It is easy for people to say online that they are through with these brands, but soon change their minds.
Yes!!! I totally agree. People seem to think these multi-million and billion dollar companies are saints, and Dior is the only alleged sinner.

Dior is now facing an antitrust investigation on their labour practices, with their headquarters searched by financial police & antitrust officials. They are alleging unfair commercial practices. This isn’t going away quietly.

Another aspect of this that I find bothersome is that Dior is using subcontractors anyway. The way luxury brands market their pieces is that they are handmade by artisans. Instead, they are subcontracting work to other companies. I would expect the makers to be actual employees/artisans of Dior. So not only is Dior not actually making the products, they are "allegedly" using sh*tty subcontractors that have no regard for their workers. I have decided I will only buy American made bags (I'm in the US). I spent some time looking up small companies that make quality bags. Luxury doesn't feel like luxury anymore. I would rather spend under $1000 on a quality bag and take a vacation.

That's a really good point. "Artisans crafting a bag in house" sounds waaayyy more luxurious than "subcontractor manufactured bag" 😅
Are you saying these subcontractors are not artisans? Chinese artisans are mostly more skilled than Europeans. Most things in China are traditionally made by hands. Their skills have been refined and passed down for thousands of years.
@@YingjunRuan-hd6em that is not what I am saying at all. I am saying they are not in-house artisans employed by Dior. They are employed by a third party. If Dior alleges not to have known the conditions under which these individuals work, I highly doubt Dior knows or cares about their actual skills. If a luxury house is asking $2800 for a bag and it only costs $53 to make, I have a hard time believing Dior is paying for a skilled leather artisan. Dior should be hiring "in house" the finest leather artisans and should be paying them accordingly.
Hermès still have their own artisans, it's all handmade in France.
Love your videos and insights Amelia :) My thoughts on this latest scandal are this - why buy from these large brands (most of which are owned by the LVMH Group) when there are smaller, better-quality brands that actually care about their employees and the actual art of design? This is the tip of the iceberg with this giant group and unless we push back by not giving them our business, they won't change. Profit is the currency in which these mammoths operate, not human kindness, not transparency, and certainly not quality. Pull your support and put it towards those businesses that CARE and share our values. That is the only way we will see true change in this space. We are the heroes here, not the police, not the consultants, and not the companies themselves. As soon as we realize that WE have the collective power to change this industry, we will see true change. Cheers!

I loved this Amelia. Isn't it sad we have to remind people to keep it respectful? I had to pause the comments on my video over that. I never was planning to sell my bags but I was told I should by many and one said I should donate that money to charity. How will that help the workers? I'm sure my husband would appreciate me selling my Christmas gift from him.🙄 I am not sure how I feel about buying luxury at all right now (I cannot believe this is limited to Dior) but I am keeping and using my Dior bags. I haven't done anything wrong Dior has and their subcontractors. To each their own but I can't do fakes either. We need to stop judging each other so harshly.

This practice has been common for ages and not just at Dior. I remember a similar scandal ages ago with Prada. There are plenty of documentaries on RUclips regarding this issue with other brands. Finally, people start to wake up.

Fab video love. It’s important that the audits get done to ensure all factories have correct and fair working conditions. I’m hoping that now this has been found this means the conditions will be sorted and regular audits should be introduced. Duty of care is paramount. I too will not sell or stop using my Dior bags. I bought them in good faith and my own experiences at Dior have only ever been good. Although I appreciate that I’m a customer etc. Like you I feel like I can only judge on what I know. I too would like to hear what Dior have to say but I assume their lawyers will have advised them to stay quiet. X

I did an online search and found a 2008 article in the LA Times that discussed exploitation of workers in the luxury field. It has left me with an uncomfortable feeling with the entire industry, and until I have much more information I will enjoy the items I presently own. I won’t be adding any more without enough concrete knowledge.

The pieces you have are iconic and represent a moment in fashion history, and what is the difference of YOU owning them or someone else owning them? They exist and if they trigger someone, that person is looking to be triggered. Your decision to hold off purchasing a new bag is honorable and feels integrous! If Luxury houses like Dior can’t ensure that their subcontractors are following basic safety laws to make luxury handbags then maybe they need to be making them in-house themselves. With direct employees they oversee.

I feel like a lot of people want to candy coat this by saying, "Oh, but Dior didn't know....the allegations are not at Dior themselves, etc..". They have to know. If they truly don't know, the someone isn't doing their job.
To me, the value of a product is also in the expert skill of the artisans who craft the item. Whether it's watches, bags, aetelier ladies...regular garment workers. It is not right to run slave labor, or not pay a living wage for these skills. Safety is important for everyone in a factory. Three shifts can be done if done RIGHT. But running a factory like a slum lord is something I thought had stopped over 100 years ago. We read about textile mills and garment factory accidents in history books when studying the Industrial Revolution. These sub contractors are running a workhouse for illegal aliens without regard to human rights. Those people take the jobs because they are desperate to work. But that doesn't give anyone the right to treat them like animals.

I always managed to justify luxury goods by thinking at least they were quality goods, made well, made to last and made ethically. I can no longer say this and I can no longer give my money to companies that don’t and won’t maintain these very basic standards. £10k for a classic flap that’s wonky, £5k for an LV bag that has shoddy stitching (I, myself, had to return an LV bag because it had dodgy stitching and a wonky label!), it’s just so hard to justify

I don’t believe much will change as long as the luxury houses continue to outsource manufacturing. The New York Times wrote an article in 2018 about workers for the luxury brands, working from home and earning 1euro an hour. LVMH brands were mentioned in this article too, so it’s an ongoing problem.

Judgment always bothers me when we don't have all the facts. I think everyone should stay true to their convictions and do as they choose without judging others. We make educated choices every day. We don't even know if Dior knew of the alleged poor working conditions in this company that it contracted. Even if Dior had said to the subcontractor, we want access to your factory to inspect the premises, they would have cleaned up the place. The subcontractor is the one who is at fault and that's why they got fined. Buy the box bag. It's gorgeous. I'm getting a Dior wicker bag as soon as I decide on the colour I want.

I’m angry when a luxury brand don’t do the right thing and treat their employees or their under companies employees the way they should. I bought my first Dior bag in the 1980:s and I have had a decent amount of diorbags during my life. I thought that “MADE IN ITALY” was a stamp that meant that all people in the chain was given a good income and were treated well. Now I don’t now what to think. Are the other brands better or is this the top of an iceberg. I am old and happy and will use all off my bags but will I shop new????
It's all the brands. Hermes pays their artisans 1,600 Euros a month. No French person would work for that wage, but migrants/immigrants from Eastern Europe and Asia will.

@@ameliarosescloset It's definitely wide spread. It's just simple econonics. Sell something for a lot more than it costs to make it. I can't believe even Birkin's and Kelly's cost more than a few hundred bucks to make. If that.
It is absolutely no surprise these practices are going on behind the scenes. How else does one become the richest (or second richest) man in the world without exploiting the people who work for them? Rich, powerful men will do whatever they can get away with to get to the top. Prices go up, quality goes down but the rich man continues to become richer in the process. If anyone thinks this is just Dior..I highly doubt that it is. It is likely every house under the LVMH umbrella (and other parent companies). They all work for the same man at the top. All brands will be cutting corners where they can. The only difference will be is that these practices are more covert and on a smaller scale than fast fashion brands. None of this is new either. These companies have been getting away with it for years. They have the money to hide. Of course everything I have said is alleged.

Thank you for having the integrity to stick to your values and at least, just WAITING to see until positive changes are absolutely being made with the company. I've seen others unboxing an item and explaining they bought it before the news came out and it was a bittersweet unboxing for them because they waited too long to return, etc. But then there's one person who will be unnamed who was GIDDY, GLEEFUL and completely ignored the news and even went as far as attacked most of her viewers in the comments continuously and viciously when she got criticism. (Very reasonable criticism by the way lol)
So thank you again for being honest and putting your wants aside for the (eventual) benefit to come for the workers at Dior through this investigation and labor practice changes.

And no you do not need to get rid of Dior bags, you speaking on this and making a stand for the workers in question is what is needed, (I have watched you other video). As mere mortals, us standing together is enough, and tbh, even if you got rid of them, Dior still has made the profit so it does not hurt them and makes zero difference. To stop buying Dior is a bit pointless unless people are going to stop buying all the other brands too. They all do these things, but Dior got caught. I love my Dior bags and will continue to enjoy wearing them. They were very expensive and I simply won’t stop using them because of the sub-contractors scandal. I’m not some millionaire. I worked hard for these items. On the subject, I kind of think Balenciaga got an unfair deal. Yes, their marketing scandal was bad. However, they made a mistake, they owned it and apologized for it. To banish the brand forever is a bit too harsh of a punishment. I’m not a big fan of their bags style wise, but if I was, I would give them another chance.

I’ve been collecting designer bags since 2005. However several incidents have given me a total paradigm shift. I will enjoy my collection but won’t buy anything new from LVMH, or Kering. I was prepared to pay a premium for something made ethically in an atelier - but it’s now obvious that these products are made in sweatshop type of conditions. Was gonna buy a new Neverfull in empriente leather - getting a Polene Cyme instead. Made by actual artisans in Spain. I may still buy Ferragamo or tods or even Hermes, but on the caveat that they continue to produce ethically. It’s totally illogical to pay a premium for something made in the exact same way as a fast fashion brand , but paying 100x the cost. No.

I am hoping Dior will do the right thing. There is an ethical obligation on their part to ensure subcontractors maintain standards. For now though, I too am pausing on buying anything further until then even if I love so many of their bags! I was in the New Bond Street store in London this week and the footfall there still seemed fairly steady.

This incident was an eye opener and it’s very good that Italian authorities are taking action. I will continue using my Dior items. I have spent a lot of money on them and stopping using them would hurt myself and not Dior. When it comes to buying more I’m a bit conflicted. But Dior has the same owners as LV, Fendi and many others so why only stop buying Dior and not the other brands?

What I find an atrocious attitude with people saying throw the Dior bags out. Someone litterally worked SO hard to make them, for tiny money and you will throw them out? It's like a final lash against the people making these goods. Awful awful in my opinion. At least appreciate someone's sweat and tears instead of throwing it out.

It’s such a tricky area when luxury and ethics collide. Most luxury buyers are ethical people and they have limits. I think the furore with Balenciaga is a prime example. That was perhaps went further than most people are willing to be pushed. I for one sold my only Balenciaga bag for an absolute pittance because I just wanted to be done with them. This Dior issue seems a bit more like a ‘wait and see’ moment. They can make a really powerful statement if they choose to or can just say nothing and hope it blows over. I think your decision to hold off on buying anything just reminds us that we all have that limit and that ethics actually matters.

I agree with you. I find it so funny though that people who cant say no to buying a Dior bag they will through in your face that zara and fast fashion does this so its ok that Doir is doing it as well so they can justify buying their little 4800% marked up bag bc its pretty.

Lots of smaller non luxury fashion houses have these issues, they just aren't talked about because its not as shocking, and it doesn't sell many stories! I don't think you need to justify it. The Lady Dior bag is still one of the most beautiful bags in my opinion so just enjoy it! I don't think you should be put off of the brand based on what you think other peoples perception would be.

Great points! I’ve been taking a break from RUclips but glad to have caught your video. I agree with everything you said but when it comes to subcontractors it can get tricky about who is a worker and who has control (subcontractor and/or Dior?). The contracts for example should have more information. I love Dior but with this disappointing news, like you my pieces are sitting on their shelves for now. I felt the same way with Chanel when their scandal came out. I think the upsetting part is the worker rights issue for me too and it will be interesting to see what comes out from the review. Honestly I don’t get the same joy from wearing my luxury bags with these scandals for now. I also find it hard to believe even keeping in mind mark ups that whoever negotiated the deal at Dior for the bag at 53 euros did not suspect something was off with that pricing. Didn’t they question in their minds maybe it was not adding up with the cost of labour and hours spent to make a bag in that style??
If they thought about it they must have had questions, i doubt they looked beyond the bottom line

i knew there was a mark up but I didn't think it was that crazy of a mark up. i too was going to buy a dior but decided not to. that gorgeous mint lady dior in a small was calling my name. however I will wait. if I am paying that much, I'll deal with a mark up but honestly expect workers to be treated better.

Just feel like luxury brands shouldn't outsource their production. Isn't this mass production and thus how can the quality be controlled? How is that luxury? It's just overpriced high street and that's my reason for not wanting to buy more from now. But I will love whatever I already have xxx

Companies have bylaws, code of ethics and other policies around forced labour and bad working conditions. There is no excuse for not doing their due dligence. They make billions of dollars.. no more excuses for inhumane treatment of workers. Buying Dior or any other brand when you know they are in the wrong is sad and shows the greed is enabled by people continuing to support the brand... so thank you Amelia for thinking about this and sharing your decision ❤️ 🙏 its the right thing to do!!!

Actually I bought 2 Dior bags this month, and very happy with them. every body will go back to buy Dior when this issue die down, and it will, I just didn’t see the need to wait. I believe Dior will pay more attention to subcontractors, that’s all they can do.

finally this year i got a beautiful pre loved light pink color lady Dior. I love it ! The only Dior bag i have in my life hehe😍💖😭it is expensive to me even preloved coz actually i cannot afford the new ones at all. Now i read all this allegations about Dior. How is it possible that a Luxury Co. Not know about the conditions in which their Luxury products are being made and manufactured? They specifically pick the cheapest route to get more money and they’re full of Bull 🐂

I will wear my bags and I will not full stop stop buying from Dior since they are one of my favorite houses of fashion. I think people would be surprised as just how un-luxury most luxury brands are. Chanel being one of them. They just haven’t been caught yet. But with that, there’s so many scandals. I have said this before but brands like Gucci and Prada have been blatantly racist and offended/mocked an entire group of people, including myself, and people have just let that go under the rug. So if people are getting rid of all their stuff etc, I just see it as a performance. That’s my take. I personally stopped buying Gucci all the way and have stayed true to it, not even JUST because of the racism but because of how cheap their things have been in my opinion. I have had more Gucci break than any brand ever 😂. I am not playing moral Olympics with people online. Buying on Amazon, most stores like Zara and even bigger names, all bring ethics into question. There is no such thing as ethical consumption is how I see it. I think Dior needs to do their due diligence as well but this is not something that will hurt them long term. This isn’t their first scandal and it probably won’t be their, or any other luxury house’s last scandal. Great video!!❤

We are all choosing to wear blinkers if we think that the same exploitation isn't taking place across the luxury market.
I'm so relieved I've grown out of all this. I now prefer experiences with my family and saving for the crash thats coming than buying yet another bag that realistically might get used 5 times a year- if that.

Does anyone actually believe Dior didn't know about their subcontractors? My current fear is that Dior is just the tip of the iceberg. It seems so unlikely Dior's production is so very different than any other luxury brand. I am particularly concerned about Italian based brands - what are Fendi, Prada/MM etc doing? eta: Amelia, this was a great, thoughtful video. Most appreciated. That last point you made about the 4 subcontractors being a very small % of Dior's total production is a good one I hadn't put much time into. I really do hope they are the few bad apples and not the whole basket.

The buying Public can be fickle regarding the provenance that follows some companies. I avoid some companies.I had a bad experience with Mothercare, so I avoid it. Look at how Daniela Westbook was accused of negatively influencing Burberry by being papped wearing All Burberry clothing,head to toe, pushing a pram bedecked in the Burberry print, as was her child. I avoid Balanciaga following the graphic ad campaign involving kids. The Tannerman who posts on social media takes luxury bags to pieces and tests the leather and tells you which are quality .

If an investigation is performed for other luxury brands, contemporary brands, fast fashion, etc, we would not have clothes, handbags, etc to wear. It's an unfortunate truth. We would have to sell every single item we own and there would not be any company to purchase from. Tougher regulations should be implemented across all channels to ensure fair labor practices.

Don't be fooled any further. Dior are responsible for doing their due diligence before and when they hire sub-contractors to make and 'represent' their brand and products. Dior are not divorced from the acts or omissions of their contractors. Even though they will try to use their might and money to try to distance themselves, as any crooked and corrupt company will.
The truth is, the law does not allow you to turn a blind eye to the acts of your sub-contractors. They are contracted to make items ie bags for Dior. Each person in the supply chain has a responsibility to others in that chain, just as we as responsible consumers can chose who 'we support' or 'don't support' determined by where we spend our money.

I have put all new LVMH purchases on hold until I see more information trickle down.
Will I destroy my LV? Absolutely not! They were purchased in good faith with an expectation that they were ethically manufactured. Destroying perfectly good, usable items already in circulation won’t cost Bernard one dollar. Preloved shopping or abstaining certainly will if enough consumers feel the same way.

To be fair, we do not know if Dior actually knew what was happening. If they didn't know, should they have known? Yes!! But they are also owned by LVHM. With that said, LVMH should ALSO know what is going on with the companies they own, and no one is talking about boycotting LVMH. Please know that I truly believe EVERYONE should be treated with love and respect. I believe EVERYONE should be able to work in safe conditions.

This is a great video. Here's the thing though - the way those subcontractor employees have been treated is deploarable, but are we going to look into all of this for everything we buy? Is that even possible? Exploitation is an unfortunate side effect of commercialism. In all commercialism a human or animal is exploited and suffers along the way. So where does one draw the line? If one is going to boycott Dior then one has a resonsibility to understand everything about everything they spend money on. Explotation and suffering is every where in commercialism. This is the tip of the iceberg. I am happy it comes out because it increases awareness, but again, if we boycott Dior then we need to understand everything about everything we spend money on.
Great point, i think about this a lot. I think we all have to set our own limits/lines. For example, I know there are horrible labor practices that go into making computer chips but there's literally no way to avoid them in my basic appliances. So here, the best I can do is to purchase things that will last a long as possible, avoid the temptation to upgrade just because a new model comes out etc. When I cannot avoid purchasing, I can reduce my consumption. Luxury bags are definitely easier to avoid/reduce and for now, I am resolved to buy preloved or where I know for sure it is made ethically. You make a great point, we need to understand what we spend our money on.

Tbh. It’s not feasible for Dior to be responsible for the third party. Even if Dior does check ins of some kind it would be too easy for the third party to make everything look just fine when they come by. This should fall on the individual third party like it already is. Sure we can wish people across the world were paid a proper wage but the fact is across the world most people are not. People work at Disney and have to live out of their car or with 5 other roommates to make it in California.
I think the SheIn influencers had the same conundrum. They toured the facilities and everything looked fine so they had no reason to assume malpractice and substandard labor environment against the workers, however they still got a ton of backlash.

I had just made my first Dior purchases a few weeks prior to this whiletraveling with my daughter in europe. I purchased a phone case pouch, a pair of sandals and most special of all my teen daughter who only makes a little bit on money from her after-school job bought me a Dior silk scarf (her first luxury purchase ever and possibly the most money she has ever spent on a single item) for my birthday. I haven't mentioned the scandal to her and I intend to use the scarf she got for me, I would hate to hurt her sweet little heart.
