My guy, Louis Vuitton and Gucci and Balenciaga and Off White also have factories in Portugal and pay the workers waaaaay less. They earn like 3€-5€/hour. Now I didn't say LV produces everything in portugal because they don't but they do have factories here and so does Gucci and a lot of their clothes, Tshirts, jackets etc are produces here for much cheaper than in france or italy. What people dont know is that you can make the actual product elsewhere usually china and then send it over to italy to have it stamped with made in italy to make it deemed as “made in italy”. In France, there was a documentary about the Dior or Chanel atelier in France (I don't remember what brand it was). They are better treated than in Italy, it's high quality (hand made by passionated people) but one of the woman said than after 20 years of career, she is still paid the minimum wage...

Back in 2005 I bought the original Dior saddle for 595 Euros. Now real wages haven’t changed that much in the UK. But to buy the same bag, new today is retailing over 3000 Euros. Salaries have not gone up 5 times, yet Lux goods have? So profiteering have been rapidly kicking in since Covid.
The whole thing is one big sweatshop from the factory to the store to corp hq. I used to work for one of the big "luxury" houses and it was the opposite of luxury behind closed doors. Everything they do they want cheaper - suppliers, partners, employees, heck even the office furniture and computers are crap. They are bullies because they can be, meet their pricing and terms or get blacklisted. And customers are getting hosed. I've worked for "discount" brands and usually found great people because the margins are slimmer, you actually need to be good at your job. When margins are so fat everyone can be aholes and keep their jobs as long as they keep cutting costs and customers keep buying. Don't buy from the luxury houses, not only are you are getting screwed but you're enriching the worst kind of people without business ethics.
I couldn't agree more! They constantly make excuses to cut costs and force people to work with impossible deadlines, whining that they aren't able to pay everyone while the company is actually making millions. They are disgusting and actively forcing everyone to lower safety and quality standards.

This is very disappointing. The expectation when buying these items is that we as consumers are supporting quality craftsmanship and an ethical supply chain. It certainly detracts from the allure of the luxury houses. I hope the media attention on these practices forces the brands to be more transparent and rethink their business models.

I watched a documentary about luxury leather goods and I have never looked at the high fashion industry the same. So many of the same points addressed here, outsourced 3rd party contractors (sketchy and easy to deny blame or cut ties) forgien workers from Africa, 16 hour work days, unsafe working conditions, no payment after all . . . I watched a video of expensive Trickers shows made in England, but the female staff wore Sketchers. If your staff can't afford the goods they make, you are treating your staff wrong. The real luxury brands you don't know about, as you are not in a position to buy any of them. Dior, Hugo Boss, etc. are all bought by the poor who want to give the look of being rich. However the true rich will wear a $8,000 sweater that has no logo on it and $600 baseball caps.
I grew up not having much. Our parents taught us the value of money, and told us most luxury things are not worth the money. Our parents told us to save and invest our money for the future. They told us to stay out debt and own our things. We always had used inexpensive paid off cars that we kept awhile. My dad was a mechanic and autobody worker.
These “luxury” brands are no better than these fast fashion brands. Certain groups and certain people spew the narrative of fast fashion brands being unethical only to protect themselves and portray themselves as better just to be doing the same things they are guilty of. He sells you a T-Shirt other brands sell für $ 30 and cover production, distribution, marketing and sales for $ 1.000. Luxury once meant special materials, high quality and craftmanship. Today it is just a marketing claim and luxury brands fear the day costumers recognize this and the bubble bursts.
I was shocked by these allegations. I once had the opportunity to tour the Ferrari factory in Modena. It was an impressive workers’ paradise with onsite healthcare, a lot of natugral light and trees growing inside the factory. The production lines were super clean and the area where interiors were sewn included exactly what you’d expect: talented Italian seamstresses working their craft. I stupidly extrapolated this environment to ALL Italian factories. Not joking when I say this: I will never purchase another luxury item. The excitement and joy are gone. I'm tired of this dumb discussion. Sewing in a factory is is done like a conveyer belt. one person sews cuffs all day. Another sews collars. Another sews pockets. one sews sleeves, etc, etc. then those pieces are app put together. few people sewing would even be aware of how to sew an entire garment, never mind Haute Couture. flat felled pockets are sewn by template now. this only means costs of wages is way too high in Europe. The EU with their open borders make economic migration totally possible. My Portuguese friends with qualifications as engineers come to work for low wages for our national telecom. My computer main frames at work are underheld by cheap British Hindu IT people. Other European citizens move to Ireland to get a normal pay and are forced to let their women and their babies for months at home. . The German car and bathroom you will buy is put together by Siks in German factories at minimum wage. Romanian unqualified workers can work all over europe in construction with a 3 month work permits at minimum wage. So you have to blame European polticians for that. If work is to be done by locals at normal wages then that is extreme costly.

You see my local bus builder Van Hool just went broke cuz they get no orders from the state. Instead our state buys buses iin China, those chinese don't earn a dime for it . I have a Kors, I really like, I don’t know that much about how it’s made my next two planned purses are Everlane and Nicole Kwon. The one plus side of Kors is that the line doesn’t start so expensively a worker can’t access it. It might still be sweaty from slave labor though.

A quilted leather Chanel bag costed 690 GBP in 1993 from a Chanel store, the exact same bag with inferior/thinner material costs today 10.000 GBP.

What shocks me is that more than 2k doesn't seem to be enough to not brake the law. It's obvious that there isn't much money for every step in the (general issue: very intransparent) supply chain if the end product costs 2,99. But more than 2k? Come on!
This is very disappointing. The expectation when buying these items is that we as consumers are supporting quality craftsmanship and an ethical supply chain. It certainly detracts from the allure of the luxury houses. I hope the media attention on these practices forces the brands to be more transparent and rethink their business models.

How is any of this a revelation? This has been going on for decades. You would have to be living under a rock not to know this well known industry fact. Why do you think that so many manufacturers of almost everything went to China or some of the poorest countries in the World in the first place? You also have to think about culture and economies of scale to get some sort of perspective. You have to know that many of these countries didn’t even have a middle class until some of these opportunities came to their coasts. That doesn’t excuse the abuse, but the disingenuous out-rage disguised as some sort of newly minted expose is kinda ridiculous, especially after the dust settles and everything goes back to the way it was before. I watched a documentary about luxury leather goods and I have never looked at the high fashion industry the same.
So many of the same points addressed here, outsourced 3rd party contractors (sketchy and easy to deny blame or cut ties) forgien workers from Africa, 16 hour work days, unsafe working conditions, no payment after all . . .

I watched a video of expensive Trickers shows made in England, but the female staff wore Sketchers. If your staff can't afford the goods they make, you are treating your staff wrong. The real luxury brands you don't know about, as you are not in a position to buy any of them. Dior, Hugo Boss, etc. are all bought by the poor who want to give the look of being rich. However the true rich will wear a $8,000 sweater that has no logo on it and $600 baseball caps.
I grew up not having much. Our parents taught us the value of money, and told us most luxury things are not worth the money.
Our parents told us to save and invest our money for the future. They told us to stay out debt and own our things.
We always had used inexpensive paid off cars that we kept awhile. My dad was a mechanic and autobody worker.

Any big brand is likely exploiting workers. It’s usually smaller brands that can’t afford to use deep pockets for mass production that are ethically producing items.

I was shocked by these allegations. I once had the opportunity to tour the Ferrari factory in Modena. It was an impressive workers’ paradise with onsite healthcare, a lot of natugral light and trees growing inside the factory. The production lines were super clean and the area where interiors were sewn included exactly what you’d expect: talented Italian seamstresses working their craft. I stupidly extrapolated this environment to ALL Italian factories. Not joking when I say this: I will never purchase another luxury item. The excitement and joy are gone. Plus, I own enough stuff already. Furthermore, I now view luxury as cruel on a number of levels.

I'm tired of this dumb discussion. Sewing in a factory is is done like a conveyer belt. one person sews cuffs all day. Another sews collars. Another sews pockets. one sews sleeves, etc, etc. then those pieces are app put together. few people sewing would even be aware of how to sew an entire garment, never mind Haute Couture. flat felled pockets are sewn by template now. Dior quilted leather bags are done by machine where other than laying the leather on the sewing bed, its done completely by machine in under one minute. the people of Peru who raise the goats for the cashmere are paid market rate for the wool. it goes to the processors who clean the wool, as its filthy when removed from the animals. there it will be carded and spun. it then goes off to the mills to be either woven into cloth to be turned into clothing or knitted into knitwear. the only difference between Dior and Primark are the fabric quality and the length of the stitches. designers use silks, wools, cashmere, merino, linen , Egyptian cotton , viscose (wood fibre) and sometimes high quality synthetics. designer stitch length is 2.2 on the sewing machine and cheap clothes are sewn at 3.5 with heavy top and under stitching in the same length. further, no factories have to provide their own fabrics. they are provided by the design house and will often already be cut and bundled ready to sew. even the thread is supplied as the thread must match the cloth. most factories work 24 hours with three shift. if anyone is working more than that, its overtime. the big companies produce millions of garments and accessories each, every year. that's mass production. if people want top luxury made by hand, go to an artisan and not a retail shop. they make between 12-70 thousand burkin bags each year. 80,000 pairs of gucci moccasins sold in the us alone in 2023.

My Portuguese friends with qualifications as engineers come to work for low wages for our national telecom. My computer main frames at work are underheld by cheap British Hindu IT people. Other European citizens move to Ireland to get a normal pay and are forced to let their women and their babies for months at home. . The German car and bathroom you will buy is put together by Siks in German factories at minimum wage. Romanian unqualified workers can work all over europe in construction with a 3 month work permits at minimum wage. So you have to blame European polticians for that. If work is to be done by locals at normal wages then that is extreme costly.

I have a Kors, I really like, I don’t know that much about how it’s made my next two planned purses are Everlane and Nicole Kwon. The one plus side of Kors is that the line doesn’t start so expensively a worker can’t access it. It might still be sweaty from slave labor though.
