The performance difference between X and H pipe is negligible at best, not enough to notice. The sound difference is really what you want to look at between the two. You'll never notice that 5hp or 5lbft difference driving the car, but the sound you will definitely notice.
Yeah, from the videos I heard, X sounds wilder, higher pitched, and raspier. While H sounds throatier, deeper, smoother, and more muscular. I currently have a Y-pipe and plan on sticking with it out of simplicity, though I will upgrade pipe diameters and material when I do my full exhaust. Just today I had my "rear" muffler taken off after having had my mid one removed several months ago. MUCH better volume, now. And still little to no drone on cruise control. Loving it. The full setup will be long tube headers> intermediate pipes> y-pipe> bolt on/bolt off cutout> single catalytic converter> electric cutout> quiet ass muffler> exhaust downturn. I'm running an 05 dodge ram with the 5.7 Hemi. Took it to the track saturday and pulled a 15.549 stock, no tune, with only the first muffler delete and the radio and speakers removed. Next time I go, I'm leaving my spare tire, rear and passenger seats, and all the shit inside at home! I bet that will save me 300 pounds of weight!
Can you make more videos like this talking about everything a car has? I wanna get into cars but there's LITERALLY no guides or videos on it. Learning about mods like this is really nice.
I prefer an axle back exhaust because I think that would be loud enough to say "OHHHOHOHOHOOOO" yet quite enough that the neighboors will not complain about "LAAA OOOD NOISES"
About the X vs H-pipes, engine masters did a comparison, and Xpipes gave a torque boost throughout the whole rpm, where H-pipes had similar gains but only at the low end

Part of what makes exhaust modding confusing, is that so many people and companies get the terms “resonator” and “muffler” backwards. To clear it up: -Muffler: uses either sound absorption packing or baffle plates to reduce overall sound energy over a wide frequency range. Similar to a firearm suppressor. -Resonator: uses mathematically tuned sound chambers to create resonant frequencies that counteract the natural resonance of the exhaust (a.k.a. “drone”). Hence the name “resonator”. Similar to how noise canceling headphones work. Getting these terms backwards leads to a lot of bad exhaust modifications. For example, a super common mod is to delete the “muffler” (which is actually the drone controlling resonator), and keep the “resonator” (which is actually the overall volume controlling muffler). This mod aims to add a little volume without introducing drone, but ends up having the exact opposite effect. You just get tons of drone, without much more volume, because the incorrect use of terms leads people to modify the wrong components.
When shopping for an exhaust I look at budget, tone, and performance. There are great exhaust that are loud but are very expensive then I decide if I want a deep rumble or a raspy race car tone. Finally I decide if I want to keep performance in mind and get the full benefit of a free flowing exhaust or sacrifice it a bit for a more games exhaust note.

Of course, it will vary for each car, but the steps and what to look for are similar.
I work at an exhaust shop, and I don’t have a bunch of money to spent on an exhaust, so on my f150 is took off the y pipe and muffler, and now it has true duals that kick out before the rear tires. It was still super quiet, so I also have like 2.5 feet of 3” pipe then about a foot of 3.5 inch pipe as the tips, but I think I’m gonna get rid of the rear cats, and put in nicer mufflers and tips so it stays at an okay volume, but sounds better.
