RUclips algorithm just dropped me here and I have no idea who you are, but it's cool to see someone explaining their own Worldbuilding. I personally only do hard Sci-fi (and mainly focus on the worldbuilding itself and the science, lesser so any story) but hearing how people lay out the beginnings of a project is interesting.
Edit: I would recommend the channel 'Spacedock' if you're not already familiar, they do a lot of content about sci-fi world building and the logistics of space combat

I'm glad the algorithm dropped you in! Hard Sci-fi is so fascinating to me, the knowledge and dedication it takes to build a world with believable mechanics and physics is a feat in and of itself.

I don't think it's self-indulgent to build a world that you can return to later for another story. I think many..most?..sci fi and fantasy readers, deep down, want to get to know the environment of a story. Returning to a world provides a new look at a somewhat familiar environment.

That's so true. From a readers perspective I'm endlessly fascinated to learn more about different worlds and environments authors have created. And there's a reason Star Wars has as many movies and shows as it does.
