How to Avoid the Second Book Slump! ✨

Hello and welcome to today's video where I go over a few things to avoid and include in your sequel novel! I'm outlining my first-ever sequel right now and wanted to see what general audiences really liked and disliked to make sure I write something engaging and can *hopefully* compete in the market. Overall, you have to write the book that you want to write, but I hope you can find something h...
Reacting to 1 Star Reviews of My Favorite Books
Просмотров 1563 месяца назад
This is more like a listen-to-me read some one-star reviews and very rant and defend these books from any amount of criticism. I'm not sure how I feel about this video, other than the fact that this is very clearly why I need notes and scripts and shouldn't do things improv. I am much better suited to writing than speaking 😂 Anyway, despite the tangents and rants I had a lot of fun making this ...

Hello! I'm back after a very long hiatus and if you cannot tell this video is chaotic and all over the place and I feel it's very apparent that I haven't sat down in front of the camera and filmed, or edited long-form content, in months. So, I'm sorry for the mess, but I am doing better in life and look forward to reconnecting with my yt community and getting back into weekly videos! Links: ARC...

As much as I love social media, sometimes it gets discouraging when it feels like everyone is moving at a faster pace than you are capable of, or everyone else is moving forward and it feels like you're in the same place. So, this video is just a friendly reminder to myself, and you if you need it, that it's okay to go at your own pace, no matter how long that is. Let’s Be Friends: Website: www...

Hello! I wanted to try to diversify my content this year and thought I'd try some more writing-education-based content. I love exploring what makes writing 'good' and am always looking to improve my craft. Dialogue is my favorite part of writing because of how integral it is to characters interacting with each other. I also love script-writing, which is very dialogue-dependent. Let me know what...

Stories are absolutely vital to us!
It's so true!! 👏
Can't wait to see you at Reunion Book Fair!
Me too!! I'm so excited!!
Congrats and I love your channel! 😊
Thank you so much!! 😄
New subscriber here and I signed up for your newsletter. As a new writer myself hearing another's insights is so valuable. Congratulations on "This Cruel Fate". I'm still at the editing stage myself so it's encouraging to see someone who made it through that. I've bought it on kindle and will be sure to leave a review once I've read it.
Hi! Thank you so much!! :) I appreciate it! The editing stage was definitely one of those stages where the imposter syndrome kicked my butt, but the editing is what really makes your story shine! You and your story will make it through the editing stage and it'll be so worth it!
Congratulations! Gonna go get a copy right now!
Ahhh! Thank you! The book would not be what it is without your help!!
Looking beautiful!
🤩🤩🤩
Love the vibes!
Thank you!!
This sounds so cool!
I hate when this happens. But it’s also so exciting and I just want to pursue all of them.
Yes!! I have a document to hold all of my ideas or little snippets of prose!
Lol, yes people never agree on anything esp what they think of sequels
Yeah, at the end of the day you have to make the sequel you want lol
"how did you say so much without saying anything at all" 💀😂
How do you not like Harry Potter? But you like lord of the rings. They have so many similarities. I'm that same way tbh. Love harry potter but so far lord of the rings doesn't intrest me
Yes, even though they have similar over-arching themes and character archetypes, the stories and worlds and characters are all incredibly unique. I think the Eragon books have some similarities to these two franchises too, but it's how they are told! And I think that's the great thing about having so many stories because taste is so subjective that we can find things that fit our tastes but have similar meanings!
I love harry potter
Yay the rare fellow person who never liked the wizard boy books! Now I need to find others that think Brandon sanderson's books are boring elaborate spredsheets not stories.
I've only read one Brandon Sanderson book so I can't say one way or the other haha but I believe you'll find your people
Thank you for defending suzanne Collins
She truly can do no wrong
such a funny video maddi!! loved the vibes
omg thank you! 💜
You're VERY brave. I can't read 1-star reviews of my favourite books. I take it way too personally.
I am simply too nosy to not haha but that's definitely fair sometimes it does feel like a personal attack
Woohoo! It's easy to get caught up in revisions that are infinite. You have to reach a point where you just let it go as it is, warts and all. Glad to see you back and doing well!
Yes! That's so true! It's a hard lesson to learn!! And thank you! I'm so excited to be back!
Congratulations on the new job. Writing at home and getting paid for it is an amazing feeling! Your content is super inspiring, but continue to take your time to recover! I can't wait to see the new version of the book!
Thank you! It really is! And thank you! I'm excited to send it out again!
I relate to wanting to go back into the past. It’s so easy to be distracted now
Yes! There are so many distractions now it definitely takes a lot more effort to pull yourself away and focus on work. I keep finding myself picking up my phone when I'm trying to write, it's a work in progress, but we've got this!
I’m glad RUclips blessed me with your video 🤍 I love your vibe Also; a Dune/Star Wars like story sounds great. I definitely feel you with having deeper tones to your stories. Edit: we’re twinning with the exact same keyboard and colour! Wow lol
I'm so glad you clicked on my video!! Thank you!! Omg that's so funny I love that keyboard
thanks for sharing this, definitely helped me put my burnout in a different perspective ♡ can't wait to read more of your work
Of course!! Thank you!!
This was very insightful, I feel like I've been also going through some burnout and have been kinda mean to myself as well. Rest is super important but yeah it is so hard to find that balance. ❤
Self-compassion is the most important first step imo, otherwise everything else isn't sustainable long term ❤️❤️
Good job for taking care of yourself. The Internet is a lot less urgent than we think it is, so good job for taking time out. It's great to see you back, but it's even better that you're healthy.
Thank you so much! It's so true, it's easy to get caught up in the constant cycle of the internet and trying to stay on online, but it's never worth burning out!
Agree! I feel the pressure and see others doing so much better than me. I've had to put reading/writing aside when I started college, and my writing went downhill. I've also gone through career changes and motherhood, and I'm finally in a place where I can focus on the two again. Audiobooks have been a lifesaver for me, and I finally finished the second draft of my novel.... And I've also observed authors' writings go downhill from producing and producing just to meet the demands of fans/publishers. Definitely take things slow.
Yes! We aren't machines and definitely need time in between creating to recharge! I'm glad to hear that you're in a place to be creating again!
wonderful video :) thank you!
Thank you for watching!
Hey Maddi! I rarely comment on your videos but I've been enjoying your content since your world building vlog, I find it super inspiring and use it as a breather between whatever I'm working on. I often stress to finish projects and I can see the shift in quality of work when I do. This applies to more than writing, which you've nuanced by saying art, and I cannot agree more. Thanks for the video
Aww thank you so much!! I'm glad you related to the video! It's sometimes hard to find that balance between staying motivated and working at a good pace, and losing sight of the project in favor of the deadline.
hi maddi (: fellow slow writer here. i think quality wins over quantity every single time. we slow writer girlies are just as valid as those who write faster. we're all on our own writing journeys and that's okay!
Exactly!! Everybody's journey is different and that's what makes them beautiful!
The average American has a 7th grade reading level... that hurts me. Greatly. It makes me worried that writing with the fancy vocab I enjoy is going to shrink my readerbase.
I think you should write with whatever vocab you want to! I learn new words from books all the time, and reading is a skill so as people read more and more, their skill in reading will grow. I’ve seen some commenters on booktok saying how they started with CoHo and are now reading Dostoyevsky! Write for you and your readers will come ❤️
Keep going for quality. I think it's better to put something out something polished, in the long run.
I agree! Quality over quantity every time!
Great analysis. I love writing dialogue.x
dialogue is the best!!
Great stuff! I love this kind of detailed analysis on the craft. Thank you!
Yay! I'm glad it helped!!
Just binge watched alll your videos and I'm so happy I found you, I want to be friends and I would love to see a video on how you edit your novels. You're so right, RUclips can be pretty overwhelming, I started ny RUclips Channel this month and I'm curious to see where this goes. I might send you a message on Instagram! I love your videos so much, keep up the good work :)
'bubble of reflection' - I love this idea x
Great video! I appreciate the reflection on goal-setting and embracing change, both in storytelling and life and I myself have a very hard timmmee with this too ugh! It's such a struggle. I am like you, I work a LOT so it does make it harder to be super committed the way I want to be. It's evident that you're investing in yourself and your craft and thats admirable in an of itself. I'm excited to follow your journey as you continue to grow as a storyteller! 💫
Thank you! This is so sweet omg! I'm so glad it resonated with you because finding that balance can be such a struggle when you're trying to invest in yourself creatively, but also need to work, and are also trying to establish other healthy habits in your life. I'm so thankful that you're on this journey with me! ✨
isaiah 48:3 i foretold the former things long ago, my mouht annouced them and i made them known then suddenly i acted and they came to pass keep working on your writing craft but also repeat thoughts for hours i am one of the bestselling authors of all time with 1 billion books sold repeat thoughts for hours 12/9/2023
random note but the color of your sweater really suits you :)
Aw thank you so much 💖
Hi how are you? My name is Kostas and i am from Greece Which kind of books do you like to read?
Hi! I love a little bit of everything but mostly read fantasy and historical fiction! What about you?
I like to read historical and archaeological books, because i am a graduated student of hisotry and archaeology@@maddibluhme
I highly recommend "Street Candles" by David Collins-Rivera. Really unique sci fi, and a powerfully emotional story about political instability and war. Haunted me for weeks. (don't be fooled by the truly lackluster cover art)
ooooh David Collins-Rivera also was the inspiration for Payload, right? Which I swear I have not forgotten about and I'll get you all my final thought about the final part soon. That sounds like something that is right up my ally! Thanks for the recommendation! 😃
Literally took me watching your review to realize I had confused Fall of Ruin and Wrath with JLAs other book Rage and Ruin. I will never be on her side for her naming; characters, series, places, or books. It is the most confusing thing to introduce people to her.
oooh I haven't heard of Rage and Ruin I'll have to look that one up. I read the FBAA series and I think I read the first three books within two weeks they were so interesting to me. Also I agree her naming is something else sometimes 🤣
Extraordinary people do ordinary things for an extraordinary period of time I am watching Jessica Brody writing mastery academy everyday I watch a few courses If I keep watching for 15 years maybe I can be an extraordinary novelist with new York times bestsellers
I love, love, love that quote because it's so true. It reminds me of the quote, "the published author is the amatuer who didn't quit" or something along those lines. All you have to do is just keep working a little bit, every day. ❤️

sitting and staring is a VITAL part of writing lol!
It really is!!! 🤣
Loved hearing your process.x
Aw thank you!
@@maddibluhme lovely to see you in my authortubers FB group.x
I love hearing your thought process behind your work. Also, TIL that "line edit" is a writing term. It's great to hear the official terminology for these processes.
The amount of new terms and phrases I've learned over the past few years when it comes to writing is crazy haha it's always nice to have a name for what you're doing.
