  • Sleep apnea, a significant sleep disorder, is primarily characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. Most common treatment for Sleep Apnea is the use of CPAP machines.
The most prevalent form, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), occurs when the airway becomes blocked, often due to the collapse of soft tissue in the throat. This collapse happens as the muscles relax during sleep, leading to snoring and disrupted sleep patterns. This is often treated with CPAP.
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), on the other hand, is caused by the brain failing to send appropriate signals to the muscles that control breathing. This is less common but can be linked to underlying health conditions.
Additionally, factors like obesity, a narrow airway, a large tongue, or tonsils can increase the risk of sleep apnea. Lifestyle choices such as smoking and alcohol use, along with family history, age, and certain endocrine disorders, also play a significant role in its development.

I was in denial until I got the results of my sleep study because I would not feel sleepy during the day. But for instance, I was strugling to stay focused at work.

Crazy right! That's your body taking energy from one area (focus) and giving it to another. Some people don't feel tired but get moody, since the body is taking energy from the 'emotional regulation' side in order to remain functional in other areas. Wild how everyone can have a different symptoms. Thanks for commenting!
