And in case you were wondering, our channel title "89 Days Away" refers to the typical 90-day visitor limit for staying in a country or area (such as the EU Schengen Zone) before having to become an official resident.
We try to maintain a lean, scaled back lifestyle in the US, and spend around 1/2 of our year living overseas as "slow travelers", within those time limits, to get the overall expat experience without having to become a full time resident of the foreign country.
Our channel started out talking about that lifestyle, but has morphed into other topics related to this stage of life that we find interesting.
We hope that you find the topics interesting as well.

Love those high ceilings
Wife and I doing our slow travel going into our 2nd year. We are from the Southwest US, HOT, so I love cold, windy, rainy weather. Great video. Will be traveling Ireland, Scotland, England for June and July. Great info comparing Marriott hotel rate to home rental. Please continue providing comparison info to us. It helps a lot when comparing arrangements between hotels, and home rentals.
Sounds like you have a great summer planned. Enjoy.
BEAUTIFUL apartment!!
We really couldn’t believe how lucky we got!
Thanks for sharing your temporary life in Edinburgh and giving us so many great tips. Especially good for late fall, winter and early spring when days are shorter and less pleasant, and it's probably off-season so cheaper. Enjoy!
Edinburgh (like most destinations) is much cheaper in the off season. And August when the Fringe Festival is going on is really pricy.
I discovered your channel this morning and am working my way through your videos on a rainy day here, a little north of Atlanta. I have been fast traveling for about 7 years doing one, often 2 trips a year. I usually stay 10 days to 2 weeks, but have stayed 10 weeks. I am ready to slow travel, so am enjoying the information you provide. I understand this apartment was through a local agency. Do you usually stay in an Airbnb and if so, please do a video on tips for choosing one. Thank you.
Thank you for your thoughtful message! We have a "selecting an apartment" video on our to do list. We have had some interesting experiences with AirBnb and Booking in the past, and have some things that we do to help avoid places with issues. We have learned a ton! Hopefully we'll get something out in the next few weeks. This topic is really interesting to us and we have a lot to share that hopefully will be helpful to others. Thanks again for watching and writing.
Great. I will be on alert to it. I watch many travel channels and love your organized, thoughtful presentations. Thanks.
It's a lovely apartment
We loved it. It makes a big difference to spend a bit more to get a comfortable apartment when traveling.
April 2023 I stayed in the Yotel across the street. 😊
😊😆Looks like a nice hotel. We enjoyed watching guests coming and going while we had our breakfast.
On a previous trip we were in front of a high school in Marchmont. We really felt part of the community being in the middle of the kids coming and going throughout the day.
That is a great place and super rate for a long-term stay. Besides visiting with your daughter, have you done any day trips or excursions to nearby places? Also, how did you find this space and are you willing to share a link?
We have come to Edinburgh many times in the last few years, so we’ve been throughout Scotland previously. Though on this trip, we did go to Glasgow, went to see Stirling castle, and have a few more shorter local trips planned. And then we’re going to take a road trip south through England for a week or so.
We found this place through a local company called Dinkins. They have a discount rate starting at a one month or more stay.
But keep in mind that rate is off season. Summer, and Fringe Fest time is much higher…
Oooof. $3000 a month for rent really hurts.
It is a bit pricy, but not that extreme when compared to the costs in the US, for a really nice place, in the center of town, furnished. A basic 2 bedroom apartment outside of DC in a decent area costs around that amount unfurnished.
And when you compare it to a hotel, it around half the price per night, for a much larger space with a living room and kitchen. Much more comfortable than a hotel. Though booking a hotel is usually less risky - you usually find what you expect to when you arrive.
Is this an AirBnB? If it isn’t, how did you find it? Thanks!
It is not an Airbnb or Booking.com apartment. I found it by searching for a local real estate company. Try searching Edinburgh, short term apartments, and see what you get. I really don’t want to create the impression that I am endorsing a specific vendor in that city.
