In 2021, we sold or gave away most of our things and set off for the EU to explore a new life.
It didn't work out exactly as we thought it would. We share our story, what we learned, and our next chapter, here.
This channel is about designing a new life at midlife. Sometimes it's about traveling and finding our new place in the world at midlife. Sometimes it's about the midlife adventure more generally: the reinvention, the loss, the excitement, the confusion, the disorientation. Empty nests, retirement, and all the other triumphs and challenges of midlife: we're here for all of it. If you're interested in this content (mostly NOT travel-oriented, FYI) you can check out our newsletter at notes-from-the-road.beehiiv.com.

But we come home on a regular basis... Not sure how that would be classified.
I bought a usb-c waterpik and usb-c toothbrush
Great idea. USB does not care about voltage. You can plug it into a plug strip with USB outlets. Nice..
Try some hand lotion on your out of control hair. It works really well.
I've tried everything. I have given up.
@@89daysaway hand lotion! It works!
We started doing this in January at 62., kinda. We sold everything and house in the US rarely staying with my Aunt. While traveling, we mix in pet sitting in England and France which has been a great experience. We have fallen in love with Toulouse, France. It has a great airport for quick trips. We are heading to Milan, Lake Como and Venice next week. All of the points that are made in this video are really spot on.
Wow. Sounds like you are doing it right. We are stuck back in the US until the spring, but are making plans for the Spring/summer. Are you doing pet sitting through a sharing service like Trusted Housesitters? That always sounded like a great method of saving lodging costs.
@ yes, we use Trusted Housesitters. It’s a great platform and very popular in England.
51 days away
We often start getting tired of being on the road by around 60 days or so...
@@89daysaway 51 days as in T minus 51. Argentina new years eve
I see you were up in our area. We’re in Queensbury between Glens Falls and Lake George. It would have been nice to meet you both. We’re in Sydney at the moment having taken a cruise from Vancouver in early October. We’re here for the winter.
We like upstate NY. Sounds like you are on an epic cruise. 4 weeks?
I have traveled like this for many years, and for me it's the *only* way to travel. I like the idea of getting to know a country a bit better than you would in just a few days. The history, the customs, the dos and don'ts are all interesting. You get to know some of the neighbors and they start treating you as one of them, especially if you are able to communicate with them. This is one of the reasons why it's important to learn at least a few words of the local language and the longer you stay, the more you learn. I always end up buying a few things for the apartment, and for the most part I just leave them there. It's much easier than trying the sell them and less expensive than putting them into storage. Holding on to things also doesn't make sense because I don't usually visit the same country twice, and even if I did, I wouldn't go back to the same city. It's a great way to get to know the world.
We have some places that we visit on a regular basis, visiting friends and relatives. I agree that it makes more sense to go somewhere new, but there is some justification for keeping some belongings in a place that you like to visit. We usually have to buy a number of small things that we leave - it always includes a new non-stick pan and other kitchen items.
Great video. This type of travel is right up our alley. We aren't retired yet, but we've noticed we like to stay places longer than the usual one week that we normally do. When I retire, we'll be taking some extended road trips and live like the locals.
It has a really different character than a stay of a week or so. More relaxing once you settle in for the longer term.
Thank you for your content! Many things here are doable except making a forwarding address work while one’s traveling! Some banks are not accepting ipostal address and not everyone would have a home nor can afford to rent an apartment that will be empty for most of the year to have an address! I understand several are making this work but perhaps their banks didn’t have issues? has the ipostal worked for you folks as an only address, are there other options that work better? Perhaps there are banks that are more international? Would really appreciate it if you could please do a video on that aspect. Thank you!
You can have your mail sent to a street address postal forwarding service like www.sbimailservice.com/. We have used them. HSBC has international banking, or you can use Wise.com for currently transfer and payments, but you should be able to use credit cards and online banking for a lot of your needs. But a key issues is to have a working international phone number that you can do two factor authentication. We use Google FI, which works for around 3 months overseas, but you may be able to extend the service by only turning it on when you need to accept calls to your US number. I'll do a video and newsletter post on our new newsletter focusing on practical Expat and Slow Traveler issues - You can subscribe at expats-and-slow-travelers.beehiiv.com/subscribe
We are embarking on the part-time expat life. We still have a car in the US that we can decide if we want to keep or sell. What are you doing about a car and car insurance when you are home?
We leave our cars at a relatives house, and don’t change any insurance status or anything. If you were going away for a longer, Say a year or more, you may have options for ensuring a stored car that will not be used on the road. I’d say check with your agent to see what they can offer.
Thanks for including the medium-term rental service you used! Just that part helps in my research.
Furnished Finder is an online service that allows owners to post their rental properties. The website doesn’t take any commission or have any role managing the rental process, so you as the renter are on your own dealing with the short term landlord, so you need to do a bit more due diligence to protect your interests. But they seem to have decent properties posted, at prices much nicer than Airbnb or other options, so we like that site as a resource.

Just a couple comments here from a new subscriber and someone who has experienced both slow travelling and expat living. Having school-aged children is not disqualifier for slow travelling as the US is renowned for their home schooling network. Just find out what home schooling entails in your home state (or province or country) before you leave. Also, with slow travelling, you're keeping a home base which will not not make it possible for people who want to flee their high taxing countries like my country of Canada. This doesn't apply to US citizens as they are taxed (for now; might change under Trump, as he's alluded to changing this) based on citizenship; whereas all the other countries tax their citizens based on residency. Well, if you're keeping a residency in your home country, you lose the ability to say you are not resident in your home country. This is a major drawback of all of us non-US citizens. I like the idea of having 3-4 different countries you travel to every year (and have an apt you can spend time while visiting that country and other countries around it) but keeping a residency in Canada and still getting taxed at very high tax rates (53.53% in the top tax bracket which kicks in if you make more than C$220,000 per year) is not worth it. It's much better giving up that residency while still earning $220k+ income wherever you are in the world and be in the 0% tax bracket while doing so.
The tax issues can be complex, but there are a few days you can save US taxes. FEIE, getting residency in a US State with no income tax, etc. Giving up residency sounds a bit scary. Not sure how you can travel if you have no country residency and no passport. In those cases, someone can find a low tax jurisdiction and establish residency. A quick search found a link to low tax jurisdictions - immigrantinvest.com/blog/tax-free-countries-en/
The only flaw in your logic is that you can slow travel in the US for the same amount of money that you can do it in other countries.
I don't see that as a flaw. The cost is not always the primary factor. We had been slow traveling in the EU a lot over the last few years, and were getting frustrated by things like a lack of a vehicle, not being able to bring things with us, etc. Doing longer trips in the US can be a lot more comfortable. We just got back from 6 weeks in upstate NY (Saratoga Springs), where we took a SUV full of things with us (Computer monitors, ebikes, dog, etc.) It was super comfortable. Lodging was $100/night for a 3 bedroom large apartment, but no transport costs (auto rental, airfare, etc), so there was some general cost savings. It was great as a relaxing change of scene...
It's a lovely apartment
We loved it. It makes a big difference to spend a bit more to get a comfortable apartment when traveling.
Totally agree. It's what you want to prioritize. Great video.
Thank you for the video, very informative 😊
Glad you like it!
Please reupload without background sounds. Too unpleasant and anxiety provoking.
I can never find decent music that fits. Sorry about that…
Thanks for the video. We’re slow traveling but spend a bit more than the low ranges you noted. We like to have more space, wash machines, and central locations.
Thanks for the info on costs. I thought I may have been skewing lodging a bit too low overall, especially for places like Portugal or Spain. We usually go past the upper range ourselves because we want more space and a more comfortable apartment. We have been in a few flats that were like barren college dorm rooms in run down areas, so we usually opt to spend a bit more for lodging to get a nicer place, especially if we are staying for a while.
We do this domestic travel for a few years now using a 5th wheel. We are doing a 49 State Tour and we’re on our 34th State and 21 National Parks.
Spot on. Great list of tips. Agree with all of them. Another tip I've discovered is don't feel guilty about not seeing every "must see" thing in a location. If it's not really of interest to you or you just haven't set aside any time for it, don't force it. Do things you want to do, not what others think you should do.
Good point.
I am in my 30s and planning my slow travel right now - I like the 89 days away idea (not requiring and avoiding all those visa headaches!) and love the channel - thanks!
Great video. Shared with my family. 😂
Me and my wife were enjoying a sunset and watching a RUclips couple trying to get the perfect sunset in their camera, and they were fighting about the perfect shot but yet missing the sunset.
Many thanks!
I can live with the smaller space, but no grill would be very difficult. And you are describing exactly what we are looking at in a local 55+ community. 😀
We have a rule where we set aside filming time, then put the camera away and have fun. We may not have much of an audience, but it has got us out of the house. Plus, met more people who love travel too. No regrets ❤
That sounds like a good rule. For us, when we get out someplace that is really scenic and enjoyable, the last thing we wanna do is pull out a camera to capture any systematic video. General B roll type video is fine, but the more staged stuff Interferes with our enjoyment of the place
@@89daysaway luckily I don't have skills and am all about that B roll. 😅
Our channel is in the travel category and a lot of what you pointed out is true. Luckily we don’t travel full time and create videos to document our travels for our family and friends but it is a lot of work.
We’ve been doing some travel videos and the biggest problem that I see is I don’t want to sacrifice my experience of a great location for a video production task. Last thing I want to do is pull out the camera and start planning out shots for a RUclips video. Glad it’s working out for you.
Best video yet
😂
Loved it! A mix of truth and sarcasm. Thanks for starting my day off with some laughs!
Glad you liked it.
Don't forget about CARRYING all of that gear. Try schlepping cameras, lenses, and that 27 pound Macbook in a backpack while walking from one country to another. Don't ask me how I know. LOL! Thanks for the video, and yea, it's pretty a pretty complete list. Right up to the "you pronounced the name of my city wrong, it's Ćròǔfghëéistan ... you stupid entitled American. 🙂
This is very funny and well done!
Many thanks!
You are very good at this. And I enjoyed watching it. : )
Thank you very much!
Damn, you let a lot of air out of my bubble.
Sorry about that…
Thank you for bringing this up! When you see those, you wonder if they’re having vacation and having fun or into some weird ritual getting in everyone’s face (quite literally) ruining others’ enjoyment too. Many quite literally push you out (locals or anyone) and go in front of you for a half hour hour (or more) staged shoot with some photographer/videographer for 100 fake shots and videos (some of them don’t even seem to be vloggers, just for some insta shots! It’s become an everyday occurrence everywhere!). Channels like these are at least sharing useful info with some tidbits of footage or snaps here and there… which is plenty (as things used to be). Wonder if it ever stops being a trend?
The great thing about a lot of these photogenic destinations is that you can point the camera in pretty much any direction and get amazing footage. So it is unlikely to stop. But on the plus side, you get to see some cool footage of the destination.
@@89daysaway well, imo, a peaceful place might be better off than having access to more footage of the same… how many can one watch? as you said, RUclips is saturated with tons of footage of any place on earth one can think of! local or faraway, exotic… even a local park with redwoods or wildflowers in bloom, nothing is enjoyable without an elaborate photoshoot going on! Believe it or not! I come across these every day even if I try to time it at different times to just have a peaceful walk!
This is a great video, leaving Canada 100% scares the shit out of me. I want to slow travel 8 months a year and back in Canada. Keep my rental property which generates $4000 a month helps pay for my travels
Good plan! Having the rental really makes it viable. Congrats!
Thanks very much for the video. Can you share the name of the bike rack that you have with the ram? I like that one. Thanks again.
Thanks! The rack we bought was from a company called Hollywood Racks. It came with a ramp too. hollywoodracks.com/products/destination-e?gad_source=1
Great video..have you tried the Bluetooth helmets....They are fantastic...you can communicate to each rider up to a mile....or just listen to music or podcast...even learn a new language while you ride.....even call a friend while riding
That sounds like a good idea. We talk on some rides, and on others just use earbuds to listen to music or a podcast from our phones.
Enjoyed your video. NEW sub...my wife and I bought e-bikes 2 yrs ago...Everything you mentioned..is absolutely true....Best decision we have made...Out In Nature ..getting exercise and having a blast
We were really happy with how much we loved riding the bikes. We had rented some previously when traveling and were impressed, but getting bikes of our own, that were better than the rental bikes, was a big eye opener.
Three years before we planned to retire, we downsized from 3400 sq ft to just under 2000 in a Del Webb 55+ community. The house had zero storage in the house or in the garage. The 3rd BR was 10x10 and not big enough for a dual purpose room. We hated the whole experience. We were just under 60 whereas >90% of our neighbors were our parent’s age. We have upsized again now. Probably have more space than we need, but happy to have it!
10,000 apartments off the market for rentals but 10,000 more for locals so I can see why locals would be irritated by having Airbnb, etc.
There will be lots less jobs for locals, they won’t need the apartments.
Residents are angry and tell the politicians to ban tourism, and yet it's those same politicians who enabled the greed which allowed businesses to use AirBnb as rule-free hotels and jack up the prices. And oh sorry residents, if you need to rent out a room to pay for the mortgage that all those Business AirBnbs jacked up, you're out of luck. You mentioned Barcelona. The previous mayor started the crackdown to combat AirBnb, and at the same time expanded El Prat (the airport) and added another cruise ship terminal. Both of which increased the wrong kind of tourism. Forgive my rant but this is rather personal to me. I can't afford a month or three in a hotel. I want to immerse myself in a place and culture. That's slow travel. We are not the problem. If Barcelona and other cities want to curb the ever increasing housing costs and clamp down on "bad" tourism, then they need to shut down the cruise ship terminals. Make it illegal for a business to buy a building just to turn it into an unregulated hotel. Don't hurt the locals who have businesses that serve tourism. Don't hurt the residents who just need to make a few bucks off a spare room. And don't tell people interested in your wonderful city and culture that they aren't welcome.
I agree. In the case of Barcelona, having 10K short term rentals in a housing market with 827K residences (~1%) and a 1.6M population should not really make a dent in the ability of locals to find an apartment. The real problems are likely elsewhere - likely regulations on permits and building, etc. A number of other cities are using short term apartments as a scapegoat for failure of the government to create the conditions where housing supply could meet the demands of the population. Furnished short term rentals seem like the more stable tourist housing options, compared to a hotel that someone can check in for a night or two with no friction. The cities need to come up with a plan to address any real tourist-related issues that works for all sides. We are sad about the reduction in options for places we liked to visit. Many of our best memories are around living in a neighborhood in a manner as close to a local as possible, and experiencing the lifestyle in a foreign city. We hope that option will continue for a while.
89! Bravo. how great , take care,
Some cities restrict the type of unit that can be rented short-term. In Penang, short-term rentals have to be licensed. If it is a condo, 75% of the owners must approve use of a unit for short-term rental. It is confusing because they haven't defined what constitutes "short-term" i.e. are monthly rentals allowed or not? This has caused many visitors, including me, to go elsewhere rather than risk non-compliance. Imagine showing up at your prepaid rental only to find out you can't stay there after all.
Really appreciate the honest assessment and great tips! I would not have thought of all the quirks.
Glad it was helpful! We wanted to communicate that longer trips like this are not always 24/7 fun like a cruise ship commercial. But setting in and staying for a while is still worth it. You can really get a feel for the place via a longer stay.
I think it’s always good to have a home base. A condo is an excellent choice.
For us the condo is turning out a bit too small. Especially due to lack of storage. A townhouse wiht a basement and garage may be a better choice for some people.
I hear where you are coming from. My wife explains it this way, When you live in the US, you have pretty much everyting figured out, but when you move overseas, you have to figure out everything again! We first moved to Panama and where there for the first five years of our retirement. We have been expats in Portugal now for about six years. We got here when the NHR was still in affect. Everything you mentioned in the video is true. At the time, Portugal was the easiest country to get a residence visa in. Also, here, you just exhange your driver's license. No need to take the driver's test in a foreighn language. Any foreign country does have LOTS of bureaucracy, and the challenge is to figure it all out. And yes we are renters here, that makes things a lot easier! We also house sit from here and travel Europe that way. So, Not disareeing at all about your experience.
