      Thanks for the info on costs. I thought I may have been skewing lodging a bit too low overall, especially for places like Portugal or Spain. We usually go past the upper range ourselves because we want more space and a more comfortable apartment. We have been in a few flats that were like barren college dorm rooms in run down areas, so we usually opt to spend a bit more for lodging to get a nicer place, especially if we are staying for a while.

If it's not really of interest to you or you just haven't set aside any time for it, don't force it. Do things you want to do, not what others think you should do.

    Thank you for bringing this up! When you see those, you wonder if they’re having vacation and having fun or into some weird ritual getting in everyone’s face (quite literally) ruining others’ enjoyment too. Many quite literally push you out (locals or anyone) and go in front of you for a half hour hour (or more) staged shoot with some photographer/videographer for 100 fake shots and videos (some of them don’t even seem to be vloggers, just for some insta shots! It’s become an everyday occurrence everywhere!). Channels like these are at least sharing useful info with some tidbits of footage or snaps here and there… which is plenty (as things used to be). Wonder if it ever stops being a trend?

      The great thing about a lot of these photogenic destinations is that you can point the camera in pretty much any direction and get amazing footage. So it is unlikely to stop. But on the plus side, you get to see some cool footage of the destination.

      @niraakara Месяц назад

      @@89daysaway well, imo, a peaceful place might be better off than having access to more footage of the same… how many can one watch? as you said, RUclips is saturated with tons of footage of any place on earth one can think of! local or faraway, exotic… even a local park with redwoods or wildflowers in bloom, nothing is enjoyable without an elaborate photoshoot going on! Three years before we planned to retire, we downsized from 3400 sq ft to just under 2000 in a Del Webb 55+ community. The house had zero storage in the house or in the garage. The 3rd BR was 10x10 and not big enough for a dual purpose room. We hated the whole experience. We were just under 60 whereas >90% of our neighbors were our parent’s age. We have upsized again now. Probably have more space than we need, but happy to have it!

    Residents are angry and tell the politicians to ban tourism, and yet it's those same politicians who enabled the greed which allowed businesses to use AirBnb as rule-free hotels and jack up the prices. And oh sorry residents, if you need to rent out a room to pay for the mortgage that all those Business AirBnbs jacked up, you're out of luck. You mentioned Barcelona. The previous mayor started the crackdown to combat AirBnb, and at the same time expanded El Prat (the airport) and added another cruise ship terminal. Both of which increased the wrong kind of tourism. Forgive my rant but this is rather personal to me. I can't afford a month or three in a hotel. I want to immerse myself in a place and culture. That's slow travel. We are not the problem. If Barcelona and other cities want to curb the ever increasing housing costs and clamp down on "bad" tourism, then they need to shut down the cruise ship terminals. Make it illegal for a business to buy a building just to turn it into an unregulated hotel. Don't hurt the locals who have businesses that serve tourism. Don't hurt the residents who just need to make a few bucks off a spare room. And don't tell people interested in your wonderful city and culture that they aren't welcome.

    • @89daysaway
      @89daysaway Месяц назад

      I agree. In the case of Barcelona, having 10K short term rentals in a housing market with 827K residences (~1%) and a 1.6M population should not really make a dent in the ability of locals to find an apartment. The real problems are likely elsewhere - likely regulations on permits and building, etc. A number of other cities are using short term apartments as a scapegoat for failure of the government to create the conditions where housing supply could meet the demands of the population. Furnished short term rentals seem like the more stable tourist housing options, compared to a hotel that someone can check in for a night or two with no friction. The cities need to come up with a plan to address any real tourist-related issues that works for all sides. We are sad about the reduction in options for places we liked to visit. Many of our best memories are around living in a neighborhood in a manner as close to a local as possible, and experiencing the lifestyle in a foreign city. We hope that option will continue for a while.

    Some cities restrict the type of unit that can be rented short-term. In Penang, short-term rentals have to be licensed. If it is a condo, 75% of the owners must approve use of a unit for short-term rental. It is confusing because they haven't defined what constitutes "short-term" i.e. are monthly rentals allowed or not? This has caused many visitors, including me, to go elsewhere rather than risk non-compliance. Imagine showing up at your prepaid rental only to find out you can't stay there after all.

    I hear where you are coming from. My wife explains it this way, When you live in the US, you have pretty much everyting figured out, but when you move overseas, you have to figure out everything again! We first moved to Panama and where there for the first five years of our retirement. We have been expats in Portugal now for about six years. We got here when the NHR was still in affect. Everything you mentioned in the video is true. At the time, Portugal was the easiest country to get a residence visa in. Also, here, you just exhange your driver's license. No need to take the driver's test in a foreighn language. Any foreign country does have LOTS of bureaucracy, and the challenge is to figure it all out. And yes we are renters here, that makes things a lot easier! We also house sit from here and travel Europe that way. So, Not disareeing at all about your experience.

    This is the deal for me. I have lived in this Washington DC area for 20 years and have a nice house here: until a couple years ago. The water pipes on all floors burst while I was on a trip. I came home to garbage and mice everywhere so needed a room quickly while still working. Had to let the house go on sale. One of my coworkers, a lovely Filipina, (who makes wonderful pastries) said I should not think about retiring in the Philippines. She visits her hometown often and it is not good for expats now. She mentioned I should call a Maryland local hotel for a room. Stayed in the room for a couple months that became years after retiring, Still there now. I could have bought another house but would have sold the original had I seen this before. The monthly rate is covered by my pension payments and includes lots of benefits plus wireless connection. The only cost is the hotel bill and local taxes. I have my own small kitchen equipment and can prepare any meals I like. There are many restaurants in the area that deliver to the room. The view overlooks lots of woods and park lands. The staff have been absolutely great and this gives total freedom in making plans and following actions: like visiting the PI. If traveling to the PI the colleague could go too and translate for me. In my case I should have sold the house earlier and ‘retired’ then. It may depend on your area rates. If you are retired check the rates in other areas you can visit for short stays. Make contact with hotels you like: they may give you special rates If they know it will be recurring. If not retired, visit hotels in your preferred area and ask what deals they might give you for a longtime stay. Don’’t miss a chance to try other types of living (before you have to!). Regards

    Not everyone wants to have a Social Network. As a retired person, who was socially active for many years, I have discovered that eliminating connections rather than increasing them brings more peace and tranquility to my life. For a while I used to attend a Senior Center, not my cup of tea, for a variety of reasons. A Photography Club was particularly enjoyable, but ceased meeting in person with Covid. After cancer I decided to reinvent my life to make the most of the time remaining, I should add there is no fear of recurrence. That said, I am perfectly happy with occasional time spent with family, and a variety of life long interests. Friendships require considerable effort to maintain. Short interactions in every day life such as waiting rooms, often yield pleasant interludes, and insight into the lives of others. I consider them little nuggets of joy. As an Introvert, I do not feel the need to spend large amounts of time with others, in fact, almost all my interests do not require the participation of another. The older I become the more selective I have become, quality is better than quantity, one size does not fit all.

      This is a wonderful perspective and one we don't talk about often. Thank you for adding it to the conversation. It's interesting to consider how not only how your need for social connection, and your desire to put out the effort it involves, may change as you get older and as you experience life. For introverts especially, it can be draining. Quality versus quantity is a great phrase to remember here! Thank you for writing.

    We downsized from 4000 sq ft to 1200. Way to small, no privacy when you wanted alone time. Now in 2900 sq ft. Much better. I can not hear his tv unless I want to.

    Great video and some suggestions I haven't thought of. I retired some years ago as well as moved away from previous hometown and work area. Many suggestions really do work to meet new friends or keep up with old friends. Planning a move to overseas country and making new friends will be a real effort. Looking forward to it but know how challenging it can be in midlife.

    Wow. This idea wasn't even on my radar. Thank you! I'm looking at the spreadsheet lately as I consider early retirement. My calculations show I can live very well in, for example South East Asia. But what of the budget if I am keeping a home base? My parents are too old to use as a primary US residence as that would reduce costs to a car and insurance (but they are in their 80's so who knows how much longer they'll be alive) so that means a home base which is surely going to cost a significant amount and there goes any thoughts of living well while I part time travel. Hmmm let me brain storm some ideas. Thanks again for the topic. Very interesting.

      Sounds like your parents can give you an US address, and maybe some storage space for your belongings. Then you can just travel as long as you want, staying in Thailand for as long as they allow without becoming a resident, then heading over to the EU for 3 months and Great Britain for another 3 or so (you can stay 6 in GB). Coming back to the US when needed to take care of any responsibilities.

    I think the starting point has to be recognising that some of your stuff is about memories of who you were. I can remember buying certain things so giving them away seems to be like letting go of a part of my past. This didn't seem to be a problem when I was younger and at work. However now that i am retired, the past seems more significant.

      My wife says if you haven’t used it in a year, you probably don’t need it. We will be downsizing from our 3800 sq ft to probably between 2000-2400 sq ft. We currently only use our first floor and don’t need anything that is upstairs, so see yah. We have one piece of furniture that we will take with us if we can, but won’t keep us from getting rid of it. The one thing we might miss is our pool in the backyard. We spend ,ore than 10 months a year outside in the evening, but will rely on the community pool in future. That may or may not be a mistake.

    An interesting video. We have thought about emigration and would probably have done it if it was not for Brexit. That said we would have considered areas where we have been on holiday for a number of years so that we know people and the area. Being European we probably have more holidays at work than North Americans so we have had a lot of experience of certain countries. Perhaps choosing a country on the American continent might have been easier for you.

      Maybe. We have spent a lot of time in the EU, and have EU citizenship, so we are pretty comfortable there. Looking back, I think what dissuaded us was mainly missing friends and family, and the amount of work required to make the expat transition happen.

    We've downsized and used (2) key approaches to minimize lost items as well as reduce the keepsake storage. First, We inventory all our storage items and review this inventory every so often to continue to "let go" of items. This keep us from not remember where things are. We know exactly which bin and where the bin is, so finding things is a snap. For keep sakes, we started really evaluating why we wanted to keep them. Was it the physical item itself that gave us satisfaction? If so keep it. Was it the memories that the item reminded us of, then we took pictures and built picture books. We actual find that the picture books get looked at and discussed much more often and they will be very easy to pass along for generations as opposed to furniture that may not be in the style or taste of our future relatives.

    We also downsized once but recently moved again (to a right-size) place with better amenities. One thing to consider is when selling you could go overseas for a few months after moving out (to storage), once sold come back and buy. This worked well for us.

    • @89daysaway
      @89daysaway 3 месяца назад

      That's what we did. Closed down our US residence and had everything in storage, and went traveling to scout out potential expat destinations. Worked great for us, but it was a bit unsettling to not have a home to go back to. We were planning on getting an AirBnb once we returned, while we sorted out our future...

    I’m a lot younger than you with two teens still at home. Grew up in Suburban America with a dad who has way too much stuff that I’ll eventually need to deal with. I moved to an expensive city (Boston) in early adulthood before having kids where space was a premium. We made it work with 900 square feet for years. Then we moved abroad for an opportunity. Being a corporate move er had the freedom to choose what we brought but we still pared down and don’t regret it. We have made two big international moves since then and always have pared down and I’ve been picky about what I saved from the kids childhood. We have a big place relative to Europe but tiny compared to our American families and friends but we clear out junk and are choosy about we let in. Something I learned in our 900 sq foot condo in Boston! I’m so thankful that I learned to pare down when I was still young. Garages are for cars not random crap. We have never had the luxury of having a garage as adults so we learned to put things away properly or not get them in the first place.

      Sounds like your approach is working well for you. Downsizing too much did not really work totally for us, so we are adjusting up a bit in size. Everyone has different wants and needs.

      It’s just stuff. I don’t have much with an emotional family attachment though. We moved possessions from the from family box to box to box over three continents and never used them and that’s when I had enough. It’s just stuff but the stuff that I’m left with I really do love. And I’m not a minimalist.

    We downsized 3.5 years ago but we did it in stages. 1) First, about a year before selling our house, we went through room by room, identified what we wanted to keep, got rid of the rest, and determined whether we needed working or hobby spaces in the new place. 2) We sold the four-bedroom house, moved into a three-bedroom rental apartment to see how that would work for us. 3) Halfway through #2, we determined more things we could ditch and moved into a two-bedroom rental. After the two-bedroom for a year, we knew that two bedrooms was probably too small for us in the future (rent or buy). However, we also knew that we were comfortable eventually moving into a place with shared common areas (common room /activity center, gym, outdoor cooking gear, pool) so we did not have to buy / rent them ourselves. For the past 18 months, we have had everything we own in storage as we focus on our travel goals. Visiting with friends who have big houses during this time has reminded us that we never want to go back to our starting point. Putting everything into storage also forced us to review everything before it went into the unit, leading to a further 30% reduction in “stuff”. We don’t know our endpoint yet but we now have a much better idea.

      I agree that a 2 bedroom is a bit too small. We also need a bit of extra unfinished storage space that is usually not that available in condos. At least a garage worth of space.
