DIY graphite golf shaft extractor/puller for under £20

  • If you can find one golf shaft extractors, which you need to pull graphite shafts, are pretty pricey. I looked at what was needed and decided to make my own. A 2nd hand Stanley 702 woodworking bench vice, a pillar drill vice and a rubber shaft holder. The whole lot came in at around £19.
    To hold the hosel of the head I used an old connex connector tool. These were one of the first connectors to allow you to swap shafts. The tool is very sturdy and the right size but you could easily make your own. I even considered cutting a slot in the jaw of the vice but this worked well.
    My first couple of attempts were learning curves. The shaft was slipping in the pillar vice, probably because I bought a very cheap shaft holding rubber, and I was putting pressure on the shaft too early. In this one I heat the shaft first then it comes out nicely.
    I removed 5 shafts in this session and all were good.

    The Y thing that push the head (black colour), can it be made of aluminium?

      Hi, it's not Y shaped, it's a semi circle. What it needs to do is to take the force of pushing on the head. You could make it from aluminium but it would need to be as thick as the one in the video. I would suggest practicing on a club with a steel shaft to give you an idea of how much you have to heat it to soften the glue before moving to a graphite shaft. The key with graphite shafts is to use as little heat as possible because the shaft is made with glue.

      @@blonogasoven hi .thanks for the reply..i know its not y shape..i just dont know how to describe the shape..haha..im planning to use aluminium but worry it might not be hard enough..the thickness is around 10mm which i think its thick enough..

    I'm guessing if you pull hard and the epoxy is not quite hot and melted enough, the shaft can tear off?

      This is just a cheaper version of exactly what the expensive pullers do. The epoxy will always give before the shaft breaks if you pull it straight. You keep heating and keep enough tension that when the epoxy heats up enough the head just comes off. If you haven't done this before so suggest you watch some videos of professionals removing shafts.
      This is really aimed at those who have pulled shafts before but want a cheaper way to do it.

    I have tried this and absolutely destroyed the shaft before the pulling began.. Any suggestions on heating duration? I definitely over did it..

      I'm so sorry to hear that. This is just showing the puller. I'd strongly advise watching some videos of shafts being pulled. This is aimed at those who know how to do it and want a cheaper alternative.

      @@blonogasoven I should add that I have successfully done this many times with irons and wedges. With driver shafts it is a far more delicate operation..

    Hi Gary, That's clever and cool. I've been trying to build one myself, but it's been more error that success so far. I can't quite see the whole apparatus from the video. Do you use the pillar vise to hold the shaft clamp rubber?

    Can you detail the parts? Links to them? How did you make the part that goes on the hosel? Thank you!!

      The part that goes on the hosel is just a tightening tool for a connex connector that I had. I could also have just notched a piece of scrap metal to the right size.
      There is a corner bench vice and a pillar drill vice. The shaft is held with a rubber golf shaft holder.
      I can't link to the corner bench vice or the connex connector because one I already had and the other was 2nd hand but if you Google the descriptions you will see what they are.
      The pillar drill vice and golf shaft holder are very easily searchable and available on eBay or Amazon.

      @@blonogasoven so what did you do, drill a hole thru the end plate of the corner bench vise and mount the connex tool part to the top w/ a bolt and washer?
