I am soon-to-be-married to a Unites States Marine and am a "veteran" of 2 deployments...this song moves me to tears every time I hear it. We are very fortunate he has not made the "ultimate sacrifice," but we have experienced firsthand those who have...and thank them sincerely, regardless of our personal beliefs on the war in the Middle East...God bless and Semper Fi!
I'm a member of the Canadian Army, I can't explain the emotion this song gives me. I think of the men and women in the past who have served and the men and women that serve today. Especially makes me think of the men and women who have past trying to make the world a better place.
As a firefighter, courage, honor and sacrifice are at the core of our character. These traits are exemplified at the highest standards by our men and women of the armed forces. I can sit and write these comments in the warmth and safety of my home only because somewhere a Soldier, or Marine, or SEAL or Airman is cold and hungry making it possible. I have the HIGHEST respect and honor for those past and present who gave and are giving their lives for my freedoms. I salute you all.
everytime i think of how many of our american soldiers have died for this country , it makes me cry...im very grateful to those who lost thier life so that i may live free,..
My father served during WWII, 2 brothers served in the Navy, 1 in the Air Force and I in the Army. I am proud to have served this country that tries to do the right thing. May God bless America.
My deepest respect for all those who've fallen in battle to defend and preserve our country from 1775 to 2010, God bless you all. And may God bless all those who have fallen in battle to guarantee the freedoms of their country men. Sgt. Mackenzie was a Scotsman, but he writes for all soldiers, he writes of their biggest fear, which is running from battle when their mates hold the line. God bless all those that fight for their country, for without them, their country would not exist.
i am proud of you loose his life for his country his familly for his brothers is the less thing wecan do. the only easy day was yesterday. we few,we happy few,we band of brother for he who sheds his blood with me today shall be my brother. hooyah
Jayhawkmano2-Thanks so much for posting this song. My husband served two tours in VN as a door gunner on a Huey with the 1st Cav Div and then proudly served for 24 years. This haunting song will not leave my mind and should he die before me, I hope to have this played at his funeral. I know that war is sometimes looked upon as futile and foolish, but even the Bible says that there shall always be wars and rumors of wars. I just thank all of the men/women who've accepted America's call to arms.
Awesome video. Hawk. We should all be proud. I had many family members defend our way of life and country. Some gave all, some have lived on. I honor all of them. And not just my family, but friends and those I did not have the HONOR to meet. Thank you all.
Watching this makes me so proud to be an American !!! Also my favorite part of this video is the picture when they say swet and blood. God bless all in the armed forces !!!!
My father served in the military, and he never lost a limb or got horribly injured, but he told me "When ever a soldier survives his first battle, something always is left behind." i never understood what he meant by that until i started hearing his war stories.
i agree my dad was a DI for the us army for many years and my brother is a us marine and i have always wanted to be like them but im a diabetic so it stoped me a littlbe ut i kept fighting and i got in vdf witch is the guard almost but im thankful and proud of all the men and woman who has died or fought for this country
my brother-in-law just got deployed last Wednesday, he said it was tough for him, the day after he went, he was in a convoy, and he was in the truck at the front... he got hit by an IED (improvised explosive devise). he didn't get hurt, but a buddy of his lost 2 of his fingers. i pray to God nothing like that or worse happens to my brother. i ope he gets back safe. God bless the men and women who have died for their countries, and their people. may we see our family members home again. ooorah!
I am proud to be an american of scottish decent, and even prouder of the men and women who serve in all the armed forces of the world. And this song is a wonderful tribute to them.
Thank you for adding this video my Unlce Norman Ritchey severd his country in the Vietnam conflict fron 1967 too 1974 thanks again jhawkman02 again for this tribute to our fighting men and women who ensure our fredom everyday.
This song is a great example of how meaningful and haunting a piece can be, without the frills and production tweaks that so many of today's works embody. I heard this first on We Were Soldiers, and upon investigating was thrilled to find such an interesting back story, which would make a terrific story on its own account. Good stuff!
This is just epicness pure... it's... EPIC! I honor the brave men and women who died for an idea, for Democracy, for the West World, for us, for me, for every single person here. I draw my cap.
wonderful video good choice of songs very very good we scot's were born and bred fighing our whole lifes so when we sing about fighting we know whats up and how sad but gloryis it is to fight and die for our country as lots of other countrys have picked up its very touching and i have great respect for all our fighting boys and gurls
You're right it's about Sgt. McK, but it could just as well be about ANY soldier from ANY country. The sentiments would be excatly the same. The words and the singer here make this unforgettable, no matter. This Memorial Day in America I hope we will all remember our own brave men as well as those of other countries.
to the men, women, children, elderly, boys and girls alike, jews, christians, catholics, protistants, and athiests.. god bless those that have payed the price for the freedom of the rest. the ones that truly walked the walk. you are not forgotten.
Amen to your blessing. If only we could all be aware of what a horrible price is exacted from those men who gave their all...and the families that mourn. We should never take this sacrifice lightly. Nothing ever costs more than freedom. This is a terribly sad, gut wrenching song, spelling out the sacrifice made by Sgt. Mac. Lest we forget..
awesome video, makes me think of my friend i lost in beruit many years. never are they forgotten. semper fi to all marines past , present and future. sgt. b
To all those whom have served in the Armed Forces before myself, I salute you for allowing me to serve after you and before those whom now serve the United States of America.
Never forget the sacrifice of the warriors we send into peril. To the families who must cope with the empty seat at their holiday dinner table. Give their survivors the comfort of their honor and service to all who enjoy the warmpth of freedom on their face.
this really means a lot to me being that im in the service, and a lost a battle buddy in Iraq. This song and vid really pays tribute and on behalf of the us armed forces id like to say thank you.
To all the men and women of the United States Military, thank you for serving. Thank you for serving your country. I'll be going into the Army so maybe I'll see some of you while I'm there. To all others, remember those who won't be coming home.
I just came back from the army. And its a really distrubing sight. Walking around. Eyes of hate. Sad children. Dead people. Dead of both. Friends and enemies. Memories haunt me. But someday i will see them again.
Just have to listen carefully to the words and the inflections...a beautiful sung by someone with a Scot accent, but the words can be understood by anyone listening, for it's the way...not the words, that tell the story. Moving, sad and proud. Thanks for this video jayhawkman.
You want to know when I first really felt being a "soldier" ...when my brigade commander got us all together, (air force/navy included) and after a 5 mile triservice run, explained to us what it means to be a soldier...and the response "yes sir" from several thousand organized troops as the morning revielle sounded, we turned as one and saluted the flag.
I lost my best mate when I was18,we were in the BRITISH ARMY AIR CORPS,had to pick the bits up from the "CHOPPER" he crashed in!! RIP JOHNNY CARR!! All the best mate, meet you in VALHALLA!!
love the song my dads dad died in nam he was a m60 gunner on a huey when going in on a run to support his chopper was shot and he was shot 9 times in the chest may he and the rest of the men who died in nam
@JacobRarick1337 Thankyou for your service to our amazing country. My husband deployed to Iraq with the 1434th EN CO and I am very proud of what he and his unit accomplished there. I know first hand what this song represents. I am proud to be an Army wife! HOOAH!
Yes -Iam German! But a very Good Men and Friend of me is An American Marine! The Brother opf my Ex Ex Girlfriend and He do his Job-with Love -in Iraq! I have a Many respect of ALL of them! (i wish i can do also this job) Semper Fi my Friend! I love this Song!
Apparently you miss the bigger picture and the larger point. It doesn't matter who the song was originally written for, but the hope, and inspiration it creates in later generations. Hearing this song again, brings back memories of the day my unit lost our first soldier in combat, happened the day after my 27th birthday. Putting that in perspective, with the help of this song, helps me realize I am not as big as I once, thought, not at the center of everything, like so many want to say we are.
The Title 1979 - Who was Sgt MacKenzie He was a solider, a Sgt in the Seaforth Highlanders. He went to fight in France during WW I and die after being bayoneted in extreme hand to hand combat that took place in the trenches. He died while protecting his fellow soldiers. He was just 35 years old.
It's only an accent if you're not a Scots! Ha I guess everyone's voice is an accent to someone speaking another language. God Bless soldiers everywhere...they give that we might live...FREE. Thanks from a Yank...gratitude forever to all who love freedom and will fight for it.
It's so sad when I see the beginning of this video, because my great-grandfather was on Iwo-jima during D-Day and used a flamethrower. He died before I could ever meet him, but I know I would be even more proud than I am now if I did.
YOU cant beat the music of SCOTLAND to bring out the best in SOLDIERS , there is no music can beat the GREAT HIGHLAND BAGPIPE anywhere in the world GOD BLESS ALL SOLDIERS WHO LOVE THE MUSIC OF SCOTLAND ,ESPECIALLY ON OUR SIDE ,AYE I MEAN THE WEST ERN COUNTRIES , TAKE CARE LADDIES duncan a SCOT.

As for that last thing you said, about only getting bragging rights? That's preposterous. In both World Wars, we were ASKED to be there, and although our entry was late each time, our impact was great. I remember the Germans at Belleau Wood, they likened the United States Marines, to "Dogs from Hell", thus the nickname "Devil Dog", out of a grudging respect. And the intense fighting in the Far East, to help liberate the many countries, such as the Phillipines, or China. We fight for a cause.
It was written by Joe Kilna MacKenzie in memory of his great grandfather who died in the first world war. I have it on 2 Clann an Drumma albums but it isn't dated as to when he wrote it. Joe himself has since passed on.

It's sung in Scottish but if you listen carefully it's quite easy to understand. It's like English but sung with his Scottish accent. Beautiful song and a tribute to armed forces in all countries.
Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone Lay me down in the cold cold ground Where before many more have gone When they come I will stand my ground Stand my ground Ill not be afraid Thoughts of home take away my fear Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears Once a year say a prayer for me Close your eyes and remember me Never more shall I see the sun For I fell to a Germans gun

Just an old vet here whose eyes can't stay dry watching and listening to this marvelous 4 minutes of tribute. Thank you.

Itunes, it is a very popular song for many reasons. You can find it on almost any mass music vendor's site.
It was written by Joe Kilna MacKenzie in memory of his great grandfather who died in the first world war. I have it on 2 Clann an Drumma albums but it isn't dated as to when he wrote it. Joe himself has since passed on.
He's an Austrian Communist. Don't expect him to have a very balanced view of the U.S. Military from his readings of "The Daily Worker" and notifications from KPÖ headquarters...
Good video, I love this song and respect soldiers that fight for their homelands, regardless of where they are.
It's sung in Scottish but if you listen carefully it's quite easy to understand. It's like English but sung with his Scottish accent. Beautiful song and a tribute to armed forces in all countries.
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
When they come I will stand my ground
Stand my ground Ill not be afraid
Thoughts of home take away my fear
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears
Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me
Never more shall I see the sun
For I fell to a Germans gun
@blackhoodmankiller - Actually it is is Great-grandson that is singing that wrote and sung this song to pay tribute to his Great-Grandfather. He wrote the song just after his wife, Christine, passed away.
"Courage"
"Duty"
"Brave"
"Honor"
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
Where before many more have gone
When they come I will stand my ground
Stand my ground I'll not be afraid
Thoughts of home take away my fear
Sweat and blood hide my veil of tears Once a year say a prayer for me
Close your eyes and remember me
Never more shall I see the sun
For I fell to a Germans gun
Lay me down in the cold cold ground
Where before many more have gone
In memory of all brave soldiers, including the germans soldiers who die fighting bravely.
Scottish songs are always so depressing but are amazing
When i see all american films about war, i wish i could be american, just to serve the country, im from Norway.
@mcgoome that is SPECTACULAR advice...If I had a hat on I'd take it off just to salute you !
He was a scotish soldier.. who died fighting hand to hand in the trenches protecting a wounded comrade..He died from bayonet wounds..
Anyone who dislikes this does not deserve to live in this great country. This song is a tribute not only to the scots who fell in the great war but to all who have died in war, and if you don't like it then go listen to the beaver kid or whatever floats your fucking boat.
