Heath Ledger isnt made for all these cartoony unrealistic big budget super hero flicks...Nolan hired him because he was perfect and the joker he was playing was in a realistic universe where there were no super powers involved.
He was supposed to be in The Dark Knight Rises and possibly going against Bane. Since Bane wanted to take out Batman and Gotham but Joker doesn't want Bane to learn his identity and spoil the fun of killing him
Why does the Joker laugh when he's thrown off the building? Because he would have succeeded in making Batman a murderer. If he dies, he wins the ultimate battle to corrupt the incorruptible symbol of justice. That gives him more pleasure than anything.
Indeed. He realizes how that nothing we do will have a lasting effect on this world even what batman is doing. So he's just doing what he wants when he wants while saying fuck you to social norms.
I think he he cries when he laughs. Batman understands him completely. He just has more hate for himself then the joker does. The joker blames the world batman blames himself.
:Joker with braces & batman with a walker side by side: J: "Do you remember that one thing I told you?" B: "Huh? What thing?" J: "All it takes is a little... push." *shoves batman over with brace* B: "Whoa!" *thump* Joker continues laughing as Batman deploys wire grappling hook from one of the walker legs and yanks Joker over. *thump* J: "Ahhh...We're getting to old for this." B: "Yeah, I think I broke my hip."
The joker is all about it being a game because he knows Batmans moral code and how he sticks to it. Playing the game forever is just a nod to the characters on going fight and how the joker is doing it and why, he's having fun. Its literally fun for him. lol!
When I watch this scene, I like to imagine that the Joker wired the detonators the other way. So whoever tries to kill the other group will actually commit suicide.
+StoryBrain notice how he had only 1 detonator when he tried to "fix" this problem? theres a chance he may had both boats rigged to blow, so as to show that NO ONE was good.
+Red-black basketball with an addiction of throwing lamps, chairs through the window! If it comes to the Joker. It could've been suicide, killing the others, or blowing both up
yes, just like telling the opposite addresses for Harvey and Rachel; and whichever boat blew, everyone would assume the bombs were rigged the way he said, and there's be nothing left to prove otherwise.
If you think about it, Batman didn't even win the battle. He lost at pretty much every level. His love, his dignity, all the sacrifices he made pretty much went into dust bin when Harvey Dent eventually became exactly what Joker wanted him to be, and Joker pretty much killed The Batman (remember from Batman Begins, he is more of a symbol, an idea rather than a man in armour) by destroying his great public image. So, I don't know how exactly do you call it a victory for Batman?
P.S the Joker laughing as he is believes he is falling to his death cos he believed batman finally broke the golden rule of not killing anyone. These clever details is what Leto's candy pop Joker lacks along with his awful acting.
+Lawn Boy Correct, but notice how every person remade the batman instead of continuing other work, therefore the batman has broken his rule many times just in different timelines
+Carson Burk yea but not in this one. And that's why the immovable object vs. unstoppable force allegory works. That's why Joker's maniacal laughter as he fell was so great. It's not about what happen in other adaptations or depictions, it's about this trilogy being consistent at least on that one aspect. Batman vs Joker is boring in essence. Like, what can a crazy maniac do against an expert martial artist with combat gadgets? This movie takes into an ideological combat as well. An optimistic outlook on the inherent good of people, represented by Batman. Or their corruptible nature, represented by the Joker. And in the end, it's a tie. Joker wins in Harvey. Batman wins in the citizens of Gotham. That's what makes this movie so amazing. It has so many layers of complexity when I got out of the studio I couldn't believe I was watching a comic book adaptation.
+Carson Burk Same as BvS that's why more people don't really like it, most not because the movie itself, but how batman in this movie, they prefer to see batman struggle, fighting while holding his rule rather than Batfleck who simply just shooting criminal and want to kill Clark.
+Ress It's obvious that Batfleck didn't always kill criminals ya know considering the fact that The Joker, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc, Deadshot, and Deathstroke are still alive even after 20 years of fighting crime. He just killed criminals temporarily in BvS as stated by Alfred when he told him that he's changed a lot because "That's how it starts, the fever, the rage, the feeling of powerlessness that turns good men...cruel." When did he ever even shoot criminals in the movie? The only instance I recall him "shooting" at a criminal is with his grapple gun and of course the Knightmare nightmare.
"in their final moments people show you who they really are" Joker absolutely did not care that he was about to fall to his death. He didn't care about anything not even his own life. he killed people on a whim, he wouldn't even look them in the eye when he did it.
What is really amazing about this scene is that, when The Joker was in prison, he told the guard that on their last moments people show you who they really are and most of them were cowards. And after fucking Gotham up by twisting Harvey and make him become a serial killer, He's laughing like a maniac when Batman threw him off the building showing you who he really was! He didn't care about dying, he didn't care about anything!! Well deserved Oscar for Mr. Ledger!
It's more because if he died he'd have successfully corrupted Batman by making him break his no-killing rule. Backtrack a bit to the scene where batman was about to hit him with his batbike or whatever it was called. The Joker was taunting him fearlessly "hit me, hit meee" And after batman caught him from fall, he clarified this also by spouting those unstoppable force vs. immovable object alegory, and also his statement that "you truly are incorruptible aren't you, you just won't let me go" also points to that.
The best quality about The Joker is that he doesn't cast judgement on anyone. He doesn't even attempt to call himself a moral authority over anyone. He's not about good and evil. The real horror in Gotham is Gotham itself. The Joker does nothing but hold a mirror up to it all. That's the true genius behind his character.
+Eziokilla9595 I like to think of TDK Joker as the counterpart of batman. The opposite of protecting isn't to cause harm, but to not care about those in need. While batman tries to make Gotham a better place by rooting out all the criminals, the Joker tries to nullify batman's actions by either neutralizing or turning batman's allies against him (the mayor, two-face) and ultimately by pushing him into breaking his "no killing" rule and turning him into a fully fledged vigilante.
That's more the Comedian from Watchmen. I like to think that the Joker is a very simple character: the personification of chaos. He does evil things because he enjoys it, not for any gain. Sometimes he will try to make a point like he does here, but the end goal of making that point is to further cause chaos. If people realise they are capable of committing atrocities or see Harvey Dent - their champion for justice - made psychotic he hopes it will incite anarchy in Gotham.
This movie is perfect except one thing: in real life people would blow each others on that boats, because Joker was right about people, people (majority) are hypocritic monsters.
Of course we are. Every day we kill thousands of microbes. Every day we have to destroy to survive. In a world this terrible, we can only be monsters. But at least we regret it.
hairbandfan1967 I agree, if they did blew up each self on that boats, this movie would be a tribute to nature of human specie, this way... it remains ... great movie :)
***** The stronger focus here is on the civilian passengers. The scene shows that in moments of fear and desperation, one can go mad and do something "bad" or "evil" to save oneself. See the civilian people's reactions, judging the prisoners deserve to die more because they are "criminals" and they have done bad. But at the same time, they are becoming "evil" and killers for thinking that way. This scene is very deep as it's also pointing out that life is about choices and the choices we make determine our destiny.
+Canceriansoul You are naive about people, Im optimist but people in general are garbage as long as nothin happens to them, and then if it does, suddenly they become either saints or bigger garbages, and if somethin like this would happen to them, they would become like animals. I comletely agree with Joker view of Humanity, or if you want Human Specie, ofcourse there are exceptions to a rule, but they are minority. This boats didnt blow up only because this is a movie, that is the only non-real thing about this movie, that's the funny thing.
Arkham version Batman : do you wanna know something funny? Even after everything you've done. I have saved you Joker : That was pretty funny..... The Dark Knight version Joker : Oh, you. You just couldn't let me go, could you? This is what happen when Unstoppable force meet an Immovable object. You truly are incorruptible, arent you? Hah...? You wont kill me other some misplaced sense of self righteousness. And i wont kill you because you're just to much fun. I think you and i are destined to do this forever.
Both things prove that Batman is willing to save the Joker and that Joker doesn't want to kill Batman because of the yin-yang relationship they have with each other
0:41 The awkward moment when you realize this is the only scene in the entire movie where we see the Joker at a loss. The part where he throws the lead pipe out of frustration makes it even better.
***** Yeah and ironically, he lost himself for a brief moment because things didn't go according to his plan, like a chess player that got his grand plan foiled.
+GrowlingTummy it wasnt the jokers loss it was a win/win situation if he would have died he would have corrupted batman and let him to the point where he killed the joker but also when he didnt die he won because he corrupted Dent so win/win
LowiTeCH But judging by his reaction to the boat passengers not killing each other, its safe to say that he was rooting for the people on the boat to kill each other, only to get frustrated that they proved him wrong. With that said, he quickly goes to his backup plan of corrupting Dent like you said, so while the Joker did lose his first gambit, he's still two steps ahead of his opponents
in normal life the people wouldve blown up each other the joker was fully right about is description about human nature but nolan needed some morals in this scen because i also think this made it a better movie but the joker always won because he has no goals hes having fun and showing humanity that they dont have any control about what they believe is under their control
LowiTeCH True, but its still a movie so I think we can give humanity the benefit of the doubt for The Dark Knight. Yeah, he did succeed in corrupting Harvey Dent (contributing to the social unrest in TDKR) but its still satisfying to see the Joker getting proved wrong for once.
+Adam Sykes Dude, basically all the villains in the dark knight trilogy have a great point. The way they send their messages is just 'wrong'. Ra'as Al Ghul's message: "Create enough hunger, everyone becomes a criminal." (He tried to prove that by poisoning Gotham) Joker's message: "Even the best of the best are corruptible". (He tried to prove that by bringing the white knight along with the batman down to *their* level) Bane's message: "People that of corruption deserve true justice" (He tried to prove that by letting the oppressed prisoners take control of the city from the rich and powerful) I really like the dark knight trilogy because it can be enjoyed by people who just like watching movies for fun or for fanatics who like to analyze movies and look at deeper hidden meanings.
+Adam Sykes And that's why people take guns and with the tiniest reason kill others: a mass murderer lunatic is praised and hyped. I don't speak about praising THE performance - I'm talking about the crime of praising a character who murders for fun.
I really felt parts of the Killing Joke coming through in the Harvey Dent storyline. I could totally hear Heath Ledger's Joker saying that great line; "All it takes is one... bad... DAY."
The Joker actually did win. His goal was to corrupt Gotham's white knight (Harvey Dent) which he did. He even managed to corrupt Batman too. Yup, he (Batman) pushed Harvey Two-Face off the building and killed him, breaking his one rule. So overall, the Joker won.
True, but then Batman takes the blame for Harvey's death in order to protect the image of the "White Knight" so the people won't lose hope. This later proves to be false in TDR when Bane reveals the truth from Gordon's resignation speech.
Joker: "I think you and I are destine to do this forever" This line made me sad when I first saw the movie because we will never see Heath Ledger return as the Joker.
Super Rabbit I believe this line is metaphorical, actually. Well, since Heath died it has become metaphorical. Basically, good (law/order) and evil (anarchy/chaos) are destined to battle forever.
Super Rabbit i heard somewhere that Nolan originally was planning on having the joker in the third batman movie. So sad, we could have had 2 great movies with the joker in
Brilliantly directed, amazing cinematography, legendary acting and chilling dialogue. Hate all you want, The Dark Knight is the best superhero movie of all time.
Who would hate ? This movie no this trilogy is fantastic I agree this is the best super hero movie you know you did something right when people love the villain more or as much as the hero
People tend to miss out on one more thing that Joker did. By making all of the hostages disguised as civilians, The Joker made Batman fight the SWAT team, leading to some confusion to who Batman sided with. After breaking Harvey's spirit, he forced the Batman to kill Harvey Dent because if Batman did not kill him, the city would lose hope in two heroes. Joker had a win-win situation. Destroy Gotham's hope or make Batman a monster to the public.
Minh Quan I dunno. Ledger's a great Joker, but he's a bit too political to be adapted into a traditional Joker from the comics. I'd go with Tim Curry to play the Joker in a live-action version of The Dark Knight Returns. He's the right age, and he was turned down for the role on Batman The Animated Series because his take on the Joker was deemed "too scary". Also, about half the things the Joker pulled off in The Dark Knight are really implausible when you think about them.
Yeah, there should've been a timer right on the detonators. It would've put more pressure for both boats to blow each other up. On the other hand, Joker must've wanted to blow them up himself.
+Osef Enfait If there would had been a timer the people in the boats wouldn't feel as responsible for the other boat's death. No, Joker left it in their hands so it would put even more pressure on them after the timer ran out. And if they pressed the button, they would all have to live knowing that they killed each and every person in the other boat when Joker might not have pressed the button if they didn't. Joker gave them hope, and taught them that hope could kill them if they believed in it... it's that much more disturbing for those that gave in
More than Heath's performance, what people seem to miss appreciating are the awesome philosophical dialogues plus the chilling BGM! The dialogues and Nolan made this movie one of the most interesting super hero movies!
thiruvetti you are so right about that. I usually hate watching movies, but i love this one and The Matrix. Do you know of any movies similar to these, with philosophical dialogue /ideas?
Same with me. Jared Leto's version was terrible. I'm sad due the fact that this is "our" new Joker which will stay with us for a couple of years. Blah!
The God of Wikipedia No, considering what the Joker says has truth to it... And, in a real world scenario, the good vs bad thing will disappear before survival is introduced.
Danny Thomas Considering a dumbass could interpret what the joker says with ease because it's standard shit. The Joker did not invent this logic. It's not some ultra complex way of thinking. You're not a super intelligent being, in fact, it's basic school shit to view things from multiple viewpoints which is essentially all this is. So when naive little pricks come on supervillain videos, going on about how they're right and how they're so young and can understand the flaws of humanity, ill admit, it gets really fucking annoying.
This is why Nolan will have support. Always. I don't care that haters say he's overrated. No other filmmaker can do what he does. Story wise. Every time I watch his movies I see little clues that I didn't see before. And see that everything has its place. Nothing is wasted. He planned every step. The people that call him out are just clueless, and don't like to think during movies.
i also love how he references some of his movies by using similar lines or scenes or even the entire movie. For instance, take interstellar for one example 'all it takes is one little push...'
Yea one of the few things that bugs me about this movie. Like at least have him have that crappy voice, and then loose it for an important moment, like when he says "What did you do". But watching him keep up the act when he's suppose to be genuinely reacting, is painful to watch.
1:39 I love all the symbolisms behind this scene. The villain (or the bad/insane guy) is hanging upside down just like how him and his opinions are seen as the opposites of every other "good and sane" person. The camera then starts to slowly turn till we are at the same level as Joker just in time with his philosophical speech. We're no longer seeing the movie from Batman's (aka the good side) perspective. Everything feels weird and unconfortable in this awkward shot as we are now watching from Joker's point of view and god damn his perspective actually makes a lot of sense! We like him! Quite some genius work from Nolan to make us feel one with the villain.
no man, the joker is so amazing. bale was a good batman in begings, after that just fought with his elbows, thats no batman at all. ben afflecks batman is the real batman from the comics. then ok he kills people but of course in extended.movie clearly tells you how tired and angry he is and the old man says he became more evil.
That’s funny because unlike Jack Nicholson from Batman in ‘89, he just screamed as he fell. Batman basically got him killed when he shot his latch string to the granite gargoyle with the Joker’s ankle tied to it as he tried to climb up to the chopper to escape.
0:42 His true colors was this moment where people proved him wrong and he realized that he's crazy and delusional Joker was trying to play with people's emotions just like the devil luring them to kill eachother for the sake of fun. Because he knows that deep down people hate eachother but they don't show it but when the ships didn't explode it proved him wrong which made him mad
The story is off the charts. From beginning to end. So many great bone chilling ideas. What makes this movie is the story. And then Heath's Joker. Putting the two together makes a masterpiece. Treasure it folks. We will never again see a Nolan+Ledger film again.
The U.S has well and trully gone mad now. Indeed George Floyd was that little push but it happened on the background of the 100,000+ deaths and lockdown related to covid-19, the largest spike in unemployment in U.S history and no live sport to keep the masses distracted. The mob has well and trully lost its mind and Rome is burning.
“I think you and I are destined to do this forever.” If only Heath hadn’t died. We could of had at least another film directed by Nolan displaying the never ending philosophical, mental and physical battles between Batman & the Joker.
The followup to this would have been amazing. I liked The Dark Knight Rises, but I'd be lying my ass off if I said I didn't wonder what Ledger would have done in a sequel.
Christopher Nolan said it was "too painful" to talk about, or think about. I can't remember if it was talk or think, but he did say it was too painful. They had big plans for The Joker in the third film.
Seeing as they brought back The Scarecrow for the Court Room scene in The Dark Knight Rises i reckon they would of brought the Joker in there somewhere. Sort of all the Batmans enemies from the trilogy working together you know
Something Burton never got that Nolan did was that Joker didn't want to kill Batman. They are two characters with a very unique relationship. Joker, in the canon and BTAS, enjoys the game. "There's a certain rhythm to these things... I cause trouble, he shows up. We have a few laughs and the whole thing starts all over again!"
I mean Tim Burton's Batman blows up a few henchmen, and does strafing runs with his Batwing killing a good few. I love Burton's style, but that's a completely different Batman.
One of the best parts of Ledger's transcendent performance is his mastery of the American accent. Being an Australian you would NEVER guess that he was - he completely owns the American way of speech.
Maybe I'm reading into this too much (although I doubt it since any filmmaker knows that each scene is lit and shot meticulously; all the more so pertinent to a man like Christopher Nolan) If you notice from 3:00 onward, you see that the lighting exposes the Joker's left face and in turn, exposes Batman's right side. It shows the duality of the characters, that they're the two sides of the same coin. It's a subtle reiteration of what the Joker is saying: they're both so different that they're complimentary, they're the "unstoppable force and the immovable object."
I have to disagree. Watched all 3 Nolan films multiple times and BvS twice. Gotta say I still give the edge to Bale here. He showed serious character development, even in the first film alone, and made me feel like a real person going through real problems in comparison to Batfleck which was certainly a good superhero...but not a good character.
His facials at 0:40. I know that feeling. That feeling of things just starting to slip away or not go as you thought it should. (Not that I'm saying iv tried to get people to blow each other up; dont report my post to the FBI or Mi6)
Everyone is saying Joker was laughing when Batman threw him off the building because Batman broke his code....but i think the real reason he was laughing was because it was the first time he heard Batman tell a joke just before throwing him off and found it really funny. Joker: Wanna know how i got these scars? Batman: No! But i know how you got these.. *shoots batrangs and throws joker off* That's actually pretty funny. 1:15
Joker states he "brought him down to our level" when referencing Harvey Notice his use of the word our he's talking about him and Batman and then he goes on to talk about Madness Batman is insane and a joker knows it the dude dresses like a bat
I guess not....he's very charismatic. And he is portrayed by Heath Ledger who I think is very attractive so you are not the only one having a crush on his Joker ;D
In reality, the boats would've go boom. Srry folks, it is what it is. We, the people, are bad. The only good people in this world are those who do less bad.
+Brian MadGil yeah, but this is a movie that doesn't want to be R-rated lol. Furthermore, the 'why so serious' scene is also unrealistic. A cut to the cheek won't kill you. For the same reason however, they just ignored it. Epic movie though
I think there would've been a lot of people going to pull the trigger but not being able to do it, killing that many people with a turn of a key is an awful weight. But yeah in the end both boats would've blown up, it's natural selection we want to survive.
+charming mohammed Only weak people. Because there are people who their entire life is a row of bad days and still hold their ground. I think these people are who deserve to be praised.
Bale's Batman voice makes sense and works for his interpretation of the character. The thing I don't like is how little he says and how dumbed-down what he says is. The famous interrogation scene is barely a conversation at all, just the Joker speaking and Batman reacting physically. The core of the Batman-Joker stories are conversations and clashes of ideology. Batman should be a sympathetic character, not just Bruce Wayne. Take The Killing Joke for example. anyway.
lcyw20- agree there, I remember in the shark tank scene, joker cracks a joke, joker says you could never really take a JOKE, and kicks Batman in the pool. So Batman just allows joker to do all the talking, because Batman does not see the point even going to his level
Because Batman is dumb he just puts a band-aid on broken bones. When Batman stole for his first time he realised the petty criminals do what they do because they NEED to or have NO CHOICE. Then when the league if shadows pointed to the real criminals (people in the government) he wilfully refused to accept it, for him to accept the truth it would make him realise that he is the criminal.
ricksj16 Ra's Al Ghul put it on himself to destroy civilization, not just corrupt bureaucrats. That's what Batman defended against Ra's. The very fact Batman exists means that the law is corrupt in Gotham. But the conflict between Batman and the league of shadows was about killing millions of innocent people.
urbanvancity 1- Look up the definition of "civilization" Gotham is not civilised nor any other city were brutes use the monetary system to control and exploit the poor. 2- The "innocent" people were going to die anyway either through poverty or martial law. 3- People who WILFULLY ignore the collapsing environment around them and decide not to change it are NOT innocent.
Hence the reason for Batman's existence. Ra's Al Ghul wanted to destroy Gotham and ALL of it's inhabitants. Batman wanted to eliminate corruption in Gotham and to shake it's citizens out of apathy. If the lightbulb is fused, you don't tear down the house, you change the lightbulb. That is the difference between Ra's and Bruce.
This is such a brilliant film, showing that you don't need mindless CG action to complete a comic book movie (MOS, Green Lantern, Every Marvel Movie etc. you get the point). The best scenes in this movie are this, the interrogation, and the chase sequence, among an array of others, none of which use CG (small amount for the chase) but involve brilliant dialogue, and thrilling story telling. In fact, while the fighting is decent, it is the weakest point in an otherwise brilliant movie. There's just something brilliant about a man who can beat up anyone in a physical battle, but seem helpless in a psychological confrontation. And it's something TDKR couldn't replicate. It's such a shame the Ledger passed, I truly believe because of his passing, it's why we got a half hearted effort from Nolan who just wanted to disconnect with the series after that. If Ledger was alive, I truly believe we would have gotten atleast a couple more films, and the greatest onscreen conflict in film history between these two legendary characters, battling for the city of Gotham.
Did anybody catch when the joker was laughing at the end of this clip when the pitch of his laugh changed drastically? When I first heard that, it creeped me tf out... Which is why I love this adaptation of the Joker
That end laugh sounds like he was in celebration of what he's done in a dark twisted way. It was an evil laughter but he was feeling victorious and accomplished. A combination of triumph, anger, joy, bitter and sadness. An emotional climax for the Joker.
That last laugh almost sends shivers down your spine. So taunting, guttural, gravel while still genuine. The Joker is not just putting on an act - he truly found funny the things he had done. I dont know how Ledger came up with that particular laugh, but he nailed it. One more difference between him and Leto - Leto was not able to come up with a laugh that did not sound fake and that sounded genuine.
Yes. Part of the reason I love the scene. That was the Joker's ultimate troll move. Batman thought he won but Joker had an ace. It was kind of funny watching Batman storm off like a mad girlfriend haha.
Joker’s point wasn’t about causing chaos or death in Gotham. His overall goal is a simple but brilliant one. He wanted to show everyone that someone like Harvey Dent can be brought to Joker’s level. Batman crossed that line using Lucius Fox’s sonar technology to try to find the Joker. Something Fox didn’t approve of. Gordon was right. Joker did win.
The detonators on each ship were designed to blow up both ships simultaneously. Joker only had one detonator. It was a trap the whole time. "Everything burns."
Anyone else think that if one of the boats blew up the Joker would have laughed and said "I told you so." and then would have blown up the other boat anyway...
there's a theory that the detonator would actually have blown up the ship that it was on, another reversal by the joker. So the citizens would actually just have killed themselves
I just love the visual symbolism in this scene. As joker is hanging upside down with batman in front of him, they literally are the Ying and Yang. Two opposing forces that can't exist without each other. As far as heroes and villains go, Batman versus Joker will always be number one in my book.
I really liked what CinemaWins said “I think you and I are destined to do this forever.” “And we would have watched you do this forever, truly.” RIP Heath
That laugh when falling deserved 10 oscars.
Agreed!!
Well, he won one (even though he was dead). I guess that's fair...
MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY
Tony Stark Wrong universe, Tony. Get back to Marvel...
Fuck you cartman I'm gonna call Kyle to kick your ass or tell your mom not to give you an iPad
I hear people say Heath Ledger should have been in Suicide Squad if he was alive, but come on; he's too good for that movie

Since Bane wanted to take out Batman and Gotham but Joker doesn't want Bane to learn his identity and spoil the fun of killing him
Ledger would not have been in Suicide Squad since it was a rebooted version of Batman anyway.
Why does the Joker laugh when he's thrown off the building? Because he would have succeeded in making Batman a murderer. If he dies, he wins the ultimate battle to corrupt the incorruptible symbol of justice. That gives him more pleasure than anything.
Plus nothing really matters to him anyways.
+MyWorldOrder Yes, I thought the same too. I guess while falling to death his focus was on laughing it off with craziness!
Indeed. He realizes how that nothing we do will have a lasting effect on this world even what batman is doing. So he's just doing what he wants when he wants while saying fuck you to social norms.
+nfinitiduck It would have been awesome to see the joker again. We love you Heath!
I think he he cries when he laughs. Batman understands him completely. He just has more hate for himself then the joker does. The joker blames the world batman blames himself.
Joker: "I think you and I are destined to do this forever."
Batman: "Your peanut butter chill forever!"
Joker: "Maybe we could share one."
This made me laugh so fucking hard!!! 😂
Not as hard as I laughed every time bale uttered a line in these movies with his dumb growling
+drpapa26 maybe im not an idiot, but i understood every word. As easy as 2+2.

Brian Kent Pirrie Jared Leto dude.

he never mentioned death.
also can you imagine two grandpas still doing this ? :D

B: "Huh? What thing?"

+StoryBrain notice how he had only 1 detonator when he tried to "fix" this problem? theres a chance he may had both boats rigged to blow, so as to show that NO ONE was good.
the first thing that came to mind was suicide heh
+Red-black basketball with an addiction of throwing lamps, chairs through the window! If it comes to the Joker. It could've been suicide, killing the others, or blowing both up
yes, just like telling the opposite addresses for Harvey and Rachel; and whichever boat blew, everyone would assume the bombs were rigged the way he said, and there's be nothing left to prove otherwise.
Batman won the battle, but the Joker won the war.
+Jake Torrance Until the fire nation attacked.
Joker won the argument. But Batman ultimately won the war in the very end 8 years later.
liz c it’s not a game. It’s real. He was analyzing what makes us weak. Taking our worst fears and mocking them.
MDEV Joker would laugh that for sure. 😆
Batman has broken that rule so many times it's a joke. You just don't want to look for those moments, do you?
The joker laughing as he was falling was amazing
I like the last laugh a lot more for some reason.
I think the reason he was laughing was he won he made Batman kill
"In their last moments people show, who they really are."
because the last laugh was a mix of a sadness and joy smth only Heath Ledger could do (y)
"in their final moments people show you who they really are"
Joker absolutely did not care that he was about to fall to his death. He didn't care about anything not even his own life. he killed people on a whim, he wouldn't even look them in the eye when he did it.
"Madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes, is a little push." Best thing that any movie Joker could ever say.
You'll eat peanut butter jell forever-Batman
A nod to the Killing Joke where Batman pushed Joker into the acid tank
Imma get this tatted
@@mainsmain I think it's more of a nod to his "All it takes is 1 bad day to reduce the sanest man to lunacy" line from the Killing Joke
@KT Performance covid was far from the push ...
it was only the start.
soon, the real push will come.
The Joker was taunting him fearlessly "hit me, hit meee"
And after batman caught him from fall, he clarified this also by spouting those unstoppable force vs. immovable object alegory, and also his statement that "you truly are incorruptible aren't you, you just won't let me go" also points to that.
you spelled "Legend" wrong
TheFlash3237 his laugh genuinely makes me happy
That's me when I go in debt at the casino, just laugh it all off HAha hahhHahHaHhahaghahahah
Oh my god, your right.
That's true
+Eziokilla9595
I like to think of TDK Joker as the counterpart of batman.
Sooo you're saying Joker is a *parody* of society?
That's more the Comedian from Watchmen.
I like to think that the Joker is a very simple character: the personification of chaos. He does evil things because he enjoys it, not for any gain. Sometimes he will try to make a point like he does here, but the end goal of making that point is to further cause chaos. If people realise they are capable of committing atrocities or see Harvey Dent - their champion for justice - made psychotic he hopes it will incite anarchy in Gotham.
the joker hanging upside down slowly turns 180, as if nolan is trying to point out the hypocrisy of our "moral codes"
nice analysis
***** lol
Lividh3max are you serious
His far up your ass did you go to make such god awful analysis
+Mario Lancellotti idk what he means
This movie is perfect except one thing: in real life people would blow each others on that boats, because Joker was right about people, people (majority) are hypocritic monsters.
Of course we are. Every day we kill thousands of microbes. Every day we have to destroy to survive. In a world this terrible, we can only be monsters. But at least we regret it.
hairbandfan1967
I agree, if they did blew up each self on that boats, this movie would be a tribute to nature of human specie, this way... it remains ... great movie :)
***** Compassion is the basis of morality.
+Canceriansoul
You are naive about people, Im optimist but people in general are garbage as long as nothin happens to them, and then if it does, suddenly they become either saints or bigger garbages, and if somethin like this would happen to them, they would become like animals. I comletely agree with Joker view of Humanity, or if you want Human Specie, ofcourse there are exceptions to a rule, but they are minority. This boats didnt blow up only because this is a movie, that is the only non-real thing about this movie, that's the funny thing.
Mother of God. The laugh in the end is the essence of the Joker!

The more I watched this movie, the more I agree with the Joker and less with Batman...
Hassan Mohammed Cheers
+Adam Sykes *lol* I know... seriously! His words were so captivating
Indeed.
I could totally hear Heath Ledger's Joker saying that great line; "All it takes is one... bad... DAY."
But for Clayface it was one rotten day

The Joker actually did win. His goal was to corrupt Gotham's white knight (Harvey Dent) which he did. He even managed to corrupt Batman too. Yup, he (Batman) pushed Harvey Two-Face off the building and killed him, breaking his one rule. So overall, the Joker won.
True, but then Batman takes the blame for Harvey's death in order to protect the image of the "White Knight" so the people won't lose hope. This later proves to be false in TDR when Bane reveals the truth from Gordon's resignation speech.
So overall, The Joker won.
Raul Gofuckyourself Yep, probably laughing his ass off when Bane took over Gotham.
If only Heath was still alive :/
Raul Gofuckyourself Indeed. He will be missed.
Joker: I think you and I are destined to do this forever.
Me: YES!!! That's how it's supposed to be
Joker: "I think you and I are destine to do this forever"
This line made me sad when I first saw the movie because we will never see Heath Ledger return as the Joker.
So sad, we could have had 2 great movies with the joker in
Derrick Driscoll You are right, he did plan it that way he said in a interview about Heath. But with his death he had to obviously change things.

I totally agree, maybe the best movie ever
It's the best movie ever made.... not just superhero !
If you think about it, the Joker is the one villain that won. Yes he got locked up but he proved his point and that was all he wanted.
I wonder what The Dark Knight Rises would've been like if Ledger hadn't gone and killed himself with drugs...
1krani
Good question, alot better if you ask me
Minh Quan
I dunno.
You know I never thought about it that way until now
1:21 his laughter is indescribably manic
a man with absolutely nothing to lose will laugh in the face of death
What a shame that there is no timer on theses bombs, imagine the reaction of the Joker, i can see him jumping around while laughing haha
Yeah, there should've been a timer right on the detonators. It would've put more pressure for both boats to blow each other up. On the other hand, Joker must've wanted to blow them up himself.
Technically there was because he said if they dont blow one another up by 12 he will blow both boats up
+AOGxproductionz What he meant is that at 12 he would blow the boats himself. There wasn't any timer.
DanielCh9393 Pretty sure you didn't even read what i said...but ok
+Osef Enfait If there would had been a timer the people in the boats wouldn't feel as responsible for the other boat's death. No, Joker left it in their hands so it would put even more pressure on them after the timer ran out. And if they pressed the button, they would all have to live knowing that they killed each and every person in the other boat when Joker might not have pressed the button if they didn't. Joker gave them hope, and taught them that hope could kill them if they believed in it... it's that much more disturbing for those that gave in
2:39 :
Batman: "Getting really tired of your shit, Joker..."

Danny Thomas
You're just like the people he is describing.
The God of Wikipedia
No, considering what the Joker says has truth to it... And, in a real world scenario, the good vs bad thing will disappear before survival is introduced.
Danny Thomas
Considering a dumbass could interpret what the joker says with ease because it's standard shit.
The moment where Batman realized... Joker already won.
man i hate batmans voice
me too like heath's joker is so damn brilliant and amazing but compared to christian bale's batman voice... i can't take him serious lol
+Diana Marroquin it not the actor fault. It was director fault.
+Diana Marroquin Why so serios? Said joker to bale and he was not serios after
Yea one of the few things that bugs me about this movie. Like at least have him have that crappy voice, and then loose it for an important moment, like when he says "What did you do". But watching him keep up the act when he's suppose to be genuinely reacting, is painful to watch.
Actually I like it and it makes sense why he does it
3:22 notice that heath looks to the camera when he says "a little push!"
Chills...
Can't believe he was planned to be in Dark Knight Rises. 😭😭😭
This movie is so much better than that SHIT STAIN that is BvS. Batfleck would have branded, tortured and killed the Joker.
atleast batflek doesnt sound like he has throat cancer
+joshua powell still BvS is horrible

no man, the joker is so amazing. bale was a good batman in begings, after that just fought with his elbows, thats no batman at all. ben afflecks batman is the real batman from the comics. then ok he kills people but of course in extended.movie clearly tells you how tired and angry he is and the old man says he became more evil.
+joshua powell neither did i, I thought it was pretty good it just had to much to do in 2 hours.
"In their last moments, people show you who they really are"
The Joker laughs as he falls to his death
He was laughing because he thought he made batman break his rule on killing people
That’s funny because unlike Jack Nicholson from Batman in ‘89, he just screamed as he fell. Batman basically got him killed when he shot his latch string to the granite gargoyle with the Joker’s ankle tied to it as he tried to climb up to the chopper to escape.
0:42 His true colors was this moment where people proved him wrong and he realized that he's crazy and delusional
Joker was trying to play with people's emotions just like the devil luring them to kill eachother for the sake of fun. Because he knows that deep down people hate eachother but they don't show it but when the ships didn't explode it proved him wrong which made him mad

“I think you and I are destined to do this forever.”
If only Heath hadn’t died.
Was there any real talk of the final film featuring the Joker?
Nelson Smith no
Christopher Nolan said it was "too painful" to talk about, or think about. I can't remember if it was talk or think, but he did say it was too painful. They had big plans for The Joker in the third film.
Seeing as they brought back The Scarecrow for the Court Room scene in The Dark Knight Rises i reckon they would of brought the Joker in there somewhere. Sort of all the Batmans enemies from the trilogy working together you know
Check out the joker blogs. It tells the story of what happens to the joker after this.
"Without batman,crime has no punchline..."
***** Early on, yes. Later he realized he didn't want him dead. This is best displayed in the episode, "The Man Who Killed Batman."
I mean Tim Burton's Batman blows up a few henchmen, and does strafing runs with his Batwing killing a good few.
I love Burton's style, but that's a completely different Batman.
The Heath Ledger Joker should be a philosophy teacher
One of the best parts of Ledger's transcendent performance is his mastery of the American accent. Being an Australian you would NEVER guess that he was - he completely owns the American way of speech.
6 years late, but I can attest to this as an Aussie. He is absolutely phenomenal.
Maybe I'm reading into this too much (although I doubt it since any filmmaker knows that each scene is lit and shot meticulously; all the more so pertinent to a man like Christopher Nolan)
If you notice from 3:00 onward, you see that the lighting exposes the Joker's left face and in turn, exposes Batman's right side. It shows the duality of the characters, that they're the two sides of the same coin. It's a subtle reiteration of what the Joker is saying: they're both so different that they're complimentary, they're the "unstoppable force and the immovable object."
Eric Mata exactly, they are 2 sides of the same coin
Eric Mata Regarding the lighting I think you are reading too much into that TBH.

Bale's growling Batman voice is horrible.
Minh Quan
You're right. I just wish he'd gone with a deeper voice rather than the whole throat cancer thing.
Bale's Batman is aging worse and worse.
Did your balls drop off
+The Joker you have become my favorite person to reply to a comment thats was hilarious
imo its aging well. him and ledger left their portrayals as one of, if not, the most iconic versions of the characters in cinema.
B-Man Have you seen Batfleck.....Voices aside this version of Batman is truer to the Comics than from Batman v Superman.
*shoots batrangs and throws joker off*
That's actually pretty funny. 1:15
Honestly, I'd say it's a bit of both😂
Joker states he "brought him down to our level" when referencing Harvey
Notice his use of the word our he's talking about him and Batman and then he goes on to talk about Madness
Batman is insane and a joker knows it
the dude dresses like a bat
Love when the joker laughs while hes falling
“I won’t kill you, because you’re just too much fun!” The most accurate Joker line ever.
Is it weird to have a crush on the Joker?
I guess not....he's very charismatic. And he is portrayed by Heath Ledger who I think is very attractive so you are not the only one having a crush on his Joker ;D
Now you know how Harley feels
If your name is Harley Quinn, no.
+H. Ar. He probably just passed out from the pain.
+Brian MadGil Well I'm glad I wasn't on that boat with you because I wouldn't have let anyone twist the trigger.
+Brian MadGil Found the "edgy" kid.
I think there would've been a lot of people going to pull the trigger but not being able to do it, killing that many people with a turn of a key is an awful weight. But yeah in the end both boats would've blown up, it's natural selection we want to survive.
madness as you know is like gravity all it takes is a little push , Injustice Gods among us
+charming mohammed Only weak people. Because there are people who their entire life is a row of bad days and still hold their ground. I think these people are who deserve to be praised.
gordios79 Unfortunately those people are REALLY REALLY rare.
I like this movie. Anyone wanna rob a Mafia Bank?
So all banks then...
Jill Valentine OUCH...THAT GOTTA HURT! #GETREKT!
Jill Valentine Right in the Banks...
Jon Gabriel Too late I just did
The Joker All the banks are robbed and I put laughing gases in each of the manager's mouths
Now, this is more relevant than ever.
It's prophetic.

Ra's Al Ghul put it on himself to destroy civilization, not just corrupt bureaucrats.
"What did you do..."
For the first time in history, the symbol of hope and fearlessness in the night... is horrified.
Christian Fail almost ruined this movie with that dumb voice, I bet Nolan regretted casting him as Batman.
To me, the most bone-chilling thing about this scene is the fact that
he doesn't stop laughing while falling to his death.
Christian Bale and Heath Ledger I think, in my opinion, were the best Batman and Joker of all time. In live action.
Live action indeed but all time goes to Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill.
Rest in peace Heath Ledger.:)
I’m always intrigued as to what Jokers story to Batman would have been had he been able to tell him how he got his scars 🤔
Probably about not being yourself and covering loneliness, because this would hit Batman the most. Still, film ends, questions stay ;D Brilliant film!
Damn!
Ledgers last movie scene
Theonewhoshallnotbenamed save the best for last
ha no
imaginarium of doctor parnasus
Let's be honest one of those boats would've blown up.
He really fucking nailed that laugh.
Anyone else think that if one of the boats blew up the Joker would have laughed and said "I told you so." and then would have blown up the other boat anyway...
there's a theory that the detonator would actually have blown up the ship that it was on, another reversal by the joker. So the citizens would actually just have killed themselves
Anton Nzl I like to think the remotes blew up the boats they were on
"Madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little push."
😲😍✌️
I just love the visual symbolism in this scene. As joker is hanging upside down with batman in front of him, they literally are the Ying and Yang. Two opposing forces that can't exist without each other. As far as heroes and villains go, Batman versus Joker will always be number one in my book.
Even tho joker lost, he still won.
2:20 Always makes me crack up for some reason. The way he says it lmaoooo
+DIRTYHARRYBOX DIRTYHARRYBOX hahahahah
+DIRTYHARRYBOX DIRTYHARRYBOX Drpapa22 was the original comment who said that first
+DIRTYHARRYBOX DIRTYHARRYBOX put something where you heard it from... the original person who said it
YOUBEENACHAREFOREVER
I agree, it took me watching this movie like 8 times before finally figuring out what he said
“You’ll peanut butter chill forever!”
2:20
I really liked what CinemaWins said
“I think you and I are destined to do this forever.”
“And we would have watched you do this forever, truly.”
RIP Heath
2:14 Joker just basically summed up their entire relationship in a couple of sentences.
