    "Gifts" of "Loyalty" Strategem
Blood Ravens are renowned for their collection of artifacts "gifted" to them from other organizations.
1 CP - A Blood Raven character may take a relic normally restricted to another Imperial faction.

Going by the theory that the Blood Ravens are descended from the Corvidae Cult, the Golden Armor of the Custodes could have been gifted to the Corvidae by order of the Emperor before his internment on the Golden Throne as a formal apology for his mistreatment of their Gene Sire. Also, assuming that the Blood Ravens are indeed descended from Magnus, they may have inherited their Primarch's love of knowledge and as such place an extremely high value on historical artifacts. As such, maybe the reason that they refuse to return recovered artifacts to their rightful owners is out of a belief that by losing the artifacts, the original owners have proven that they cannot be trusted with them.

while I wouldnt put it past the Ravens to poking around other factions for info outright stealing from brother marines for no reason other then its a cool item seems a bit much(taking from a corpse on a battlefield and taking a item from a Chapters Base from under there nose is to different things), going with the theory of the Blood Ravens being in truth Thousand Sons Marines it could be said the Custodian Armor was recovered after the battle of Terra by Sons who weren't warped with there Primarch, and hoped that returning such a armor would show there loyalty in a time when everything was in question. However the purging of there records occurred and in all the chaos with the aftermath left in storage until its reason for being there in the first place forgotten and it becoming another item of awe in there armory.
As for the other notable gear like the hammer it could be a number of reasons, my thought is that since its a hammer made by Dorn himself giving the Loyalist Sons the hammer as a means to show support from the Sons of Dorn which would be why over the long period of time the Sons of Dorn never went for the hammer, they knew Dorn gave it to them but much like the Ravens own history the reasons why were erased.
I love the idea Blood Ravens are Thousand Sons and hope one day to see how that actually plays out with them and Magnus.

Just a few days ago I finished Chaos Rising for the first time and... actually this seems very likely all things considered. It is the only game I can think of where their creed of "Knowledge is Power" and the gene-seed of Magnus were quite visible. Especially when the "Judgement of Carrion" Space Hulk entered the sector and despite being in the middle of a Chaos Uprising, the Blood Ravens dropped everything to retrieve as many artifacts as possible. In all the other games they are acting like the most generic Space Marine chapter ever, but Chaos Rising somehow manages to highlight their oddities.
Too bad DoWIII is such a failure... it would have been nice to see have the chapter's lore fleshed out some more. Heck, the adventures of the Force Commander and Thaddeus with their crusade of penitence could have been great. They have just the right kind of outside perspective to have a story created around them that confronts them with what they are.

    1. In the Werewolf RPG, there was a spirit gift called "Talons of the Magpie." If you had this power, and stole something, the owner would forget he owned it. Perhaps the high number of psykers in the Blood Ravens included a few with some similar ability, which explains why other factions have not gone on a roaring rampage. Hammer of Dorn?!? You bet the Fists would be knocking on their door if they knew... or remembered.
    2. They are forgeries. Perhaps they were acquired through a silver-tongued Rogue Trader who could spin a tall tale. Perhaps their logistics arm were prone to creative embellishment. Perhaps the chapter master, by receiving "gifts" from other organizations, had tangible "proof" of auspicious deeds and prodigious events, which could inspire pride in the ranks.

An irony given the track record in Blood Raven areas. Another possibilities is going off their brief appearance in the Space Marine game, where Blood Ravens aid Ultra Marines. Indicating they earn wargear acting as a Quick-reaction force among their chapter brethren. The games text of items also says it isn't restricted to Marine Chapters, for Sisters of Battle, Inquisition and even Imperial Guard regiments likely know of the Blood Ravens.

Even the Custodes armour could be found and salvaged on some forgotten battlefield, or in aging derelict attached to spacehulk (and its history could be determined from its memorybank). By my understanding, the blod ravens do have quite long history of raiding spacehulks and (if possible) obtaining special or more powerfull wargeer. What puzzles me more than "how they came to HAVE their stuff", is why are they not using xeno wargeer too - especially, when there is no imperial counterpart, or if the xeno wargeer is more powerfull than standard imperial version. The spacewolfs (as some of their members, not as an organization) do use xeno wargear. Lucases the Tricsters pistol sight, and so one, to a degree, that in book Prospero Burns, the Vlka Fenryka attacks some advanced xeno species wich used adaptible shields, by hand to hand and melee, than by attacking them with weapons obtained from their fallen comrades (therefore the enemies adapted their shields against energy and particle weapons) and than attacked them with bolters en-mase.
BTW, Blood ravens are almost certainly descendant chapter (or splinter of original chapter - its scout company actually) of thousand sons.

They do use xeno technology. They simply mask them as normal Imperium tech. For example Gabriel Angelos terminator armour and hammer contain powerful Eldar relics. That's how he is capable of doing backflips in it.

Well, yes an no. The Hammer was giwen by inquisitor and by my understanding it is enbeded with a shard from of defeated avatar of kaela mensha kaine. But you do not see their scouts sniping the other side of the map enemy tanks with rail rifles.@@thefirstprimariscatosicari6870

First things the players did was lock their gear down.
The Blood Ravens were grateful for the party's gifts later though.

"Damn we can't figure out who our primogenitor primarch is, what relics do we collect?"
"Let's just get relics from ALL of them, loyalist or otherwise, something we grab will have to be right!"
    "Good idea!"
The conversation I imagine took place before the official Blood Raven doctrine "Grab everything not bolted to the floor, then come back with a plasma cutter for the rest" was instated.

They're driven by an urge to acquire more than just knowledge. Terra still had oceans before they visited the place and look at it afterwards!! One of them was given an audience with the Emperor, before then he still had a face. There's no such thing as missing Primarchs, those guys are all just locked away in the Blood Raven's armory. The poor Squats had home worlds before these guys passed through that part of the galaxy.

The reason why the blood ravens foundling is unknown, is because they stole it right after their ascension to space marines were complete. Before stealing the report of them stealing the founding, and stealing the report of that report being stolen, cont et infinitum.

I deem it highly unlikely they are of Dorn's stock. Even amongst the chapters of Dorn that accept librarians into their ranks, there are only a few. Seeing as they have an unusual high amount of librarians I still suspect Magnus as their primarch. Sanguinius is out of the question as they do not suffer from the red thirst or black rage. And don't bring me that bullcrap that there are no successor loyalist chapters to traitor primarchs. Even half of the founding grey knights and inquisition were of traitor stock..
As for the custodes armor, they could have just found it you know. Back during the crusade these guys were everywhere.
But then again, half the blood ravens turned traitor at some point, so maybe they stole it.

Where do the Grey Knights get their gene seed from?
Grey Knights are all psycers, with no geneseed corruption ie the flesh change. The Grey Knights have founded other chapters such as the Exorcists. And lastly, who is Janus of the Grey Knights? I bet you can find a lot of connections there with the Blood Ravens and their close association to the Inquisition and the Grey Knights.

Gray Knights have Emperor geneseed. I doubt the Ravens are decendants of the emperor considering they fell into a civil war due to corruption
